    I've had this gun for 5 months. I upgraded the scope to a Hammers - Air Gun Rifle Scope 3-9x40AO Magnum. Since then my shots have been at a consistent dead center at 25 yards. My backyard is only so big, so that's where I have it sighted. That's using Crosman Premier .22 cal Domed Ultra Magnum 14.3 gr. pellets. I also have heavier grained Gamo pellets that perform just as well at the same distance. Note: I took a robin on the very top branch of a tree at 98.7 yds. (I used my range finder). Thought I missed it until it dropped.
    I qualified Expert in the army with an M16-A1 with open sights, but that was 33 years ago. My eyesight isn't nearly as good as it once was (I wear glasses now). This gun is just that good. It has a LOT of power for a break barrel, and doesn't break the bank. It does take about 200 shots for the 60 lb pull to settle down. At first I didn't think I'd be able to cock it. Once it breaks in, it's awesome.

    Nice review as always. Over a thousand feet per second in a 22 caliber break barrel is impressive.
    I still haven't seen one of these guns up close yet so I don't know what to think about some of the comments that I've been reading across the board in the forums and other channels.... That this gun does not hold up well with heavy use over time. The biggest complaint being the accuracy starts to go away. That can be due to a poor lock up joint. Or even the seals going bad.
    I bought the Gamo big cat 1400 when it first came out. That was my first true air rifle. I didn't know anything about air rifles at the time.... I was just impressed by the Box stats the Gamo posts... Which we all know are highly inflated..... Anyway...... It did last me 5 years before the polymer lock up joint failed. I did have Gamo replace the barrel and I still use the gun on occasion. It's not a bad rifle it is accurate but very hold sensitive due to the lightweight.
    I replaced its active duty with a HATSAN 125 sniper. I am absolutely amazed with that rifles capabilities. It is the first 17 caliber break barrel rifle that I have ever owned that can drive tacks at 50 yards... And get a 5 to 8 inch group at a hundred yards.
    I'm not down on Gamo at all. My Gamo Hunter Extreme SE in 22 caliber is also a tack driver at 50 yards. At 100 yards the group is not even worth mentioning. But I love that rifle. I can't believe they discontinued making it. I'm only getting about 780 feet per second with the jsb jumbo heavies. But that's more than enough to do the job within 50 yards. I don't hunt or pest anything beyond 50 yards with a break barrel.
    That being said I've rambled enough.
    I would like to see a close-up of the lock up on that swarm. The Gamo swarm is a cool invention and advancement in air gun technology..... But I still don't see it being more than something that's marketed to kids.
    It sure does still beat the heck out of the daisy 880 that I grew up on.

    I use mine for plinking and funnin. I'm not a serious hunter anyway to be honest, but I just find the accuracy inconsistencies too much for me to choose this gamo over other options. The olde offerings from Walther and Weirauch and even Hatsan consistently put pellet shots on top of pellet shots if you do your part.
    I wont rag on the Gamo. I've long known what Gamo has been and why I havent owned one for years until the Maxxim Swarm came out. It is offered for a great price point. The loading mechanism has been stone reliable, I enjoy the easy and fast loading mechanism, and it has generally been a fun piece to enjoy general plinking with. Not the choice for precision target shooting tho.
    For those of you out there that might happen to have a consistently accurate Gamo, hold onto it and never let 'er go. It's a rare bird.

    I have this gun. Power power power!!! I use the crosman 14.3 gr pellets and they are deadly accurate!! The Ruger spiked head pellets also shoot very well out of this gun. Swap it out for a better scope, break it in, and you cant go wrong with this rifle.

    i own a gen 1 magnum in .22 cal. i love it. accuracy, power, and multi-shot. i'd have to spend $1000 to get this in any other air rifle. i shoot mine out to 100 yards at targets. wouldn't go more than 70 yards hunting with it though. within that range, it hits HARD.

    I've got this Gamo in my sights. My Silent Cat .177 is my favorite backyard plinker, from a big collection! For the money, vs features & performance, these Gamo's are hard to beat. They are very pellet sensitive though. Not too silent either! But hey, what do people want? Target's pre-punched all over the bulls-eye? That's what makes shooters sharp! IF THIS IS THE SAME AS GAMO MAGNUM REGULAR ( DID THEY FIX THE BREACH SEAL PROBLEM?????) They put the seal on the barrel block side and it keeps chewing up the seal when closing. BIG PROBLEM! also Gamo doesn't sell parts! They want you to send them the gun to fix!

  • @JeffreyADodge
    @JeffreyADodge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Tyler, thanks for the review. Honestly, it's terribly disappointing to see the gun not shoot better. I have a Magnum and a Swarm and planned on getting this gun as well, now I'm wondering if I should. I know you can shoot so don't take this the wrong way but I'm wondering if the gun could shoot better with a little more attention. It took me a while to get my Magnum shooting well but it will group H&N terminators & Sniper Magnums, Gamo red fires at a 1/2" from 40yds. I did clean the cylinder, take off the front site and recrown the barrel as well as a good cleaning of the barrel (but it likes to shoot a dirty "equilibrium" ) but the most important change I think I saw was putting a Diana Bullseye ZR-1 mount and UTG SWAT 30mm 10x50 scope on there. Hold sensitivity... I don't know, I don't think you have to be "sensitive" just consistent. My gun groups in different spots but still at 1/2" if I hold the gun or rest on bags but I think it's just the harmonics, you can hold the gun firm and group well, just has to be the same every time.
    Shouldn't have to do this much for an off the shelf gun review. You are reviewing it's "off the shelf value" not it's "modified value". Just dying to know if this gun will perform better with a better scope/mounts. It's a huge THUMP for a gun that light... I wan't to know if it shot poorly because of optics or that suppressor.

      I tried other scopes on the gun just to make sure it wasn't the factory scope causing an issue and it wasn't. I didn't see any signs of clipping on the suppressor either. It seems that I got a pellet picky one, which happens sometimes. At least it shoots a pellet pretty good out to 45 yards, I've had guns that will not even come close to the 1" mark at that distance, and that is very frustrating.

    • @JeffreyADodge
      @JeffreyADodge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh OK, well thanks for putting in the time and effort. I'm wondering if using the suppressor as leverage for the 40-50lb cocking effort puts the liner that the pellet passes through at a slightly different position each shot and changes the turbulence effect around the skirt enough to skew it's accuracy, even if it doesn't clip the liner.
      The fastest lightest pellet grouped the best, hmmm. Also, all my gamo barrels like a small diameter pellet skirt like the H&N's and crossman 5.50 and 5.51's.
      Did you try the Sniper Magnum/Light pellets? they might be less influenced by turbulence affect of the suppressor changing position (total "shot" in the dark here, probably over thinking it, could just be the not too consistent Gamo quality control).

    Not sure if you just didn't shoot it enough or if you are covering for gamo but it's not the hold sensitivity.... It too me like 300 shots to figure it out but its actually the reloading mechanism. You even see in this video that you shoot the same hole twice, and maybe you purposely only shot 5 to not show how bad it is....
    It 100% comes down how much room the pellet has in the magazine, based on far you press the pellet down determines how far in the breach it sits. Shorter pellets are basically unusable. Even the longest pellets that I carefully press into the mag has too much room for error. Millimeters of difference in the magazine equals inches down range. I noticed after shooting 20 shot groups because I would get like multiple groupings 1-2 inches apart outside of where I was shooting. And even the best pellet I found hits off about 1/4 shots 2-3 inches off of where I'm aiming at 20 yards.
    And its mainly vertical deviation, like 2" horizontal and like 8" vertical with a short pellet.....

    Use a bench rest when zeroing your rifle. The groups he showed here were all over the place. That won't happen with most pellets when using a supported position. I zeroed mine in the first five rounds with a half inch group dead center of the target. You may have to buy and shoot many pellets to see which one fires best in your gun. I like the H&N Terminators.

    So, hold sensitive or not? Rick Eutsler claims that his test gun was not hold sensitive. Also, and a point not brought up, is that the Magnum (and its Swarm variant) has issues with breech block (?) tolerance issues, and that shooting this gun with heavier pellets will amplify felt recoil. Not sure if I am sold on the concept of this gun, only time will tell.

    Hold sensitive? Maybe the break action is loose. I used to think my hold was bad, but it was the gun, especially as it got older. I found out after shooting consistently well with CO2. What does it matter if it makes 1 million fpe if you can't hit the target consistently? No more break barrel for me.

    • @tylerpatner6591
      @tylerpatner6591 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The locking mechanism and hinge bolts were not loose on this gun. Most of your magnum guns will be more hold sensitive and when it's a gun that only weighs 7.5 lbs, that is amplified.

    • @mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489
      @mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you have enormous piston moving before the projectile leaving the barrel, any hinged part will move, especially true with magnums. It's too bad they don't also make this as under/side lever so you can compare hold sensitivity; I suspect fixed barrel will not be as sensitive to hold.

    • @tylerpatner6591
      @tylerpatner6591 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The other benefit to making it an under or side lever would be the additional weight to help stabilize and take some of the recoil. But that's not what Gamo is going for, they never have. It's all about velocity. And that makes for guns that are very hard to shoot well.

    • @mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489
      @mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you put pressure on Gamo and others to make under/side lever gun with fixed barrel with just as much power? You can threaten them that they may lose one guy (me) as a customer by not offering as such. :-) Next I'll be asking for opposed piston underlever. :-) :-) :-)

    A magnum springer is an oxymoron in my opinion. Springers are about finesse and accuracy, not power.
    If you want that level of power and accuracy, get a PCP. I would only use this gun for medium game out to 20 yards, i.e. raccoons from a blind at night or something similar.

      I share your opinion. To me, the "sweet spot" of spring-piston power and precision is around 12 ft/lbs. I have such a rifle; an old Webley Omega that shoots .177, 8.44 JSB Exacts at 785 fps for 11.5 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. It will still shoot those pellets completely through a cottontail rabbit's noggin at 50 yards. That's about as powerful as I either need or want a "springer" to be. I've had Beeman R-1, Theoben Eliminator and Crusader..... Note the past tense. Still have the "wimpy" Omega and I still have it precisely because power is meaningless without the ability to place it. My .177 R9 has been "de-tuned" to run at a tick under 12 ft/lb for max muzzle energy; I bought a Walther Terrus to try out because they're in the 12 to 13 ft/lb range from stock. The hottest I would ever want a "springer" to be is my .20 R9 running at 15 ft/lbs. Beyond that, they're exponentially harder for me to hit anything with, and I know from shooting small game instantly and totally dead with my old Omega that even at its wimpy 11.5 ft/lb muzzle energy, it has plenty of power for rabbit, squirrel, quail, and chukar partridge (note: i'm hunitng in California, where air rifles are lawful method of take for these species), as far off as I care to shoot those things.

      You'll get no argument from me on that one. I'd rather take a PCP all day.

      its a gas ram not a springer. And yeah agreed, a PCP is the way to go for power

      It has a gas strut for a spring instead of a metallic coil. It's still a form of spring, driving a piston.

      No doubt it would, although I don't know why you would go with such a light pellet for that task. Increased weight at the same velocity equals higher fpe. I have taken raccoons regularly at 25 yards (because that is where my blind is set to the bait station) with my Daystate Regal using 18.13 JSB's. I will occasionally use H&N Barracuda Match for a little extra oomph if I feel like it. The 18.13's are carrying approximately 22 fpe at 25 yards, tons of energy to put a bandit down with proper shot placement, as you indicated.
      I'm just not a fan of magnum springers. Too finicky. Too hold sensitive. If you want that extra power with accuracy, I think the best way to go is a PCP. JMHO

    Just over 1000fps is far from the 1600-1300fps claimed 😕

      1600 is in .177 with the regular magnum. 1300 is with a pba platinum pellet. Mine gets to 1260. Close enough.

I am looking for a reliable air rifle (SHTF), this Swarm is screwed if the auto feeder wears out or breaks, then what. I do realize that I would be smart to have a extra couple of piston gaskets for when they wear out. How are these in cold weather? Making a video in perfect conditions is not a good review, show this gun in sandy, wet, cold conditions. thanks. I bet a grain of sand in the counter would stop this gun from firing. Just saying. Not a survival weapon.

    If this is anything like my Gamo Maxim Elite .22 you'll have screws coming loose, and falling out, all over the place (even after applying Loctite). Worst ones being the magnification ring screw and the 2 cheek piece adjuster screws.
    Gamo (BSA) Customer Service = 0 out of 10.
