  • John D. Murray is a physicist who develops mathematical models of the brain, which will provide new insight into psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. He is a researcher at New York University.
Trained in physics, John D. Murray is currently a postdoctoral researcher at New York University in the field of computational neuroscience. Dr. Murray develops mathematical models that simulate networks of neurons to understand how psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia arise from brain circuit dysfunction. At TEDxAmherst, he will describe challenges in the search to understand mechanisms underlying mental illnesses, and the potential for “Computational Psychiatry” in this endeavor.

it sort of annoys when they say our brains allows this and that, using the same kind of description, when we really arent sure if the brain is the one involved or not, but good talk nonetheless.

Are you referring to something he said in this video or in general?
What brain function are you referring to?

I think I agree with you. Why do we want to identify diseases before behavioral indications? Why do we fetishize the brain's role in mental illness so much? It's one lower level of analysis and sure it's important, but I hope that we see the benefit of adjusting environmental and social stressors before jumping to medications and neurophysiological modifications.
