    Finally a video on how to adjust side valves without removing the cylinder head.
    Interestingly, not all cars are supposed to have valves set hot (normal operating temperature). Them manual for the AMC 195.6cu flathead engine says to set the valves cold, but hot for the OHV (overhead valve ) engine.
    For setting the valves cold, or without engine running, a similar method can be used by turning the engine by hand or starter instead of actully having it running and finding the maximum and minimum clearences.

    I'm heavy equipment mechanic never seen valves get adjusted running. But I'll try it I guess but my engine is 54 DeSoto I believe Canadian 251 will it be the same process?

      Part of the process is removing the inner fender or "splash shield".....this helps with the line of sight. The 54 should be the same but I am thinking from the top of my head.....Let me know how it goes!

      The job only seems to turn out right with it running.

      I have a 1947 Desoto. It's very easy to do this on it because the inner fender comes out easily, giving you complete access to the engine...I've literally sat next to it.
      Just a classic car has this kind of design....nowadays, you have to dissasemble the entire car just to change a head gasket or something.

    I need to do this on a 1952 m37 army truck with a 230

    Very helpful.
    Your efforts are much appreciated. ...
    So, do the tappet adj. have to be done with the engine running?
    Note to self, ..... have to go find some of those old thin adj. nut wrenches. Used to see 'em 20 yrs. ago at flea markets. ... none lately.

    How do you determine which are intake or exhaust?

    • @194853DodgeTrucks
      @194853DodgeTrucks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spark plugs are positioned over the intake valves.

    My Question, how do you get in there to do it? Do you have to remove the inner fender?

    • @194853DodgeTrucks
      @194853DodgeTrucks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the 48-53's there is a "Splash shield" (inner fender) that is removed. You get to the bolts from the engine bay. If you watch my video on the front clip removal, you'll get a better look at the splash shield. Here's a link to the first video.... th-cam.com/video/FiPeICxjSww/w-d-xo.html ......there's 4 all together.

    • @194853DodgeTrucks
      @194853DodgeTrucks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lil late with the reply, sorry. There is a "hidden" bolt, centerline, underneath the manifold. Its hard to see and can fool ya a bit.

      @@194853DodgeTrucks I saw this again on P15-D24. I had my engine rebuilt two years ago and Ed's dad dad thinks my valves my not have enough clearance. I still not ready to try this.

    1950 dodgefan: ALL the bolts? There's one nut in the middle that's easy to overlook.
