Jimmy Hill *was* English football between the 60s to at the least the mid 90s. Not withstanding what a great player he was, he was *ahead* of his time in terms of keeping the ball, revolutionary, and *really* should have been given a role within the FA. He was *so much* more than the controversial commentator a lot of people knew him by. English football is a lot poorer without his influence. RIP Jimmy. *An absolute legend.* We won't forget you.
@@kaihiggins725 He and Bobby Robson played together at Fulham during the early/mid 1950s if that's what you mean. And both they were great teammates/colleagues. I don't know much about their relationship off the pitch however. Passing views as a manager of the international side compared to a judging pundit is another.
The one of only a few England managers to do alright in the job. Not forgetting how much abuse he actually did suffer during his reign. Did great for so many clubs as well (e.g. Ipswich, PSV, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle also). *Sorely missed* , along with Jimmy Hill and now Jack Charlton.
This was England mid term learning between ‘66 and 2021 ... and apparently we’ve taken a lot from the final with Italy and are going to learn from it ... Learning for 55 years ... How about some jam today .
In the event, England were unlucky not to beat Holland. One of the best goalless draws I’ve ever seen and the first match where Paul Gascoigne showed what he could do on an international stage.
its fucks me off that they did not win the game..it would have evened the score for the Euro 88 defeat and looked good on the CV to have beaten the European champions, England had a batch of chances that Lineker wasted..and the goal at the end that was ruled out, for god sake Steve Bull just lay it off a bit..!..Though Holland were 10/15 % off that tournament..
@@kailashpatel1706 Basically sums it up! We have to remember that England *only* played really well in that tournament for the West Germany semi-final only. Holland had peaked and we were *dead* lucky to get passed both Belgium and Cameroon, which a lot of these pundits would later admit.
Lineker missed two chances or rather handballed one of them and screwed another after Barnes put him through..if only Bobby knew how to play Waddle and Barnes together..
Personally, I prefer to play against different teams in each competition. I know Charlton preferred to play against teams he knew (and Holland weren't as strong as in 1988), but it just gets pointless playing against the same teams so often.
England only had *one* very-good performance in Italia '90 in that semi-final against West Germany in which most who remember and then admit. We didn't outplay anyone before that game in Turin instead of a fairly good performance against a peaked and probably in-fighting Holland.
@@SuperTed19021 they were excellent against Holland. Gascoignes best ever England performance. But you're right Belgium were the better side in the last 16 and Cameroon were so unlucky in the quarters.
I was there at the world cup with ireland, and in the third game v holland. The word came through that engkNd had gone one up. Captains Mc carthy and Gulliet on the centre circle had a few words, and gulkiet turned to his team mate andpointed to pass the ball back fix up a draw and both would go through
@@terryosullivan2620 Which is kind of strange if Gullit did do that because Holland went on to play West Germany in the 2nd round, while Ireland had the arguably easier task of playing Romania. The Dutch should have gone for the win.
Interesting analysis of the draw here. I still wonder how the draw, as unlikely as it was, came up like that. Sadly, the Dutch were a shambles at this World Cup. Gullit - was he fit? Because he was well below par. They had also sacked their manager who is speaking here before the tournament. And playing West Germany in the 2nd round after finishing 3rd in that group?? It wasn't a good time for them (or the much fancied USSR). Almost a role reversal of Euro 88.
The draw was fixed to get England into the Caligari/Sardinia Group if France had qualified England would not have been seeded and had FIFA counted the recent 3 World Cups to December 1989 1978, 1982, 1986 Holland and Spain who both actually qualified for the 1978 World Cup would have got the seeded places not England and Belgium who both did not qualify for the 1978 World Cup which was where England and Belgium were lucky to be seeded in 1990 thanks to the FIFA decision to count the recent 2 (1982 and 1986) as the failure to qualify for 1978 could have cost England and Belgium had FIFA decided to count 1978 in the seedings
jaysus look at Lineker here. he's just a shy wallflower. a baby. and now he presents the show. just shows what fame brings when ya present yourself in the right fashion. your looked after for the rest of your life. then theres the likes of alex Higgins, Paul Gasgoigne and people like that who could have had it all after their respective careers but were uncontrollable and look at them now .
Sir Bobby was robbed the footballing gods got it wrong he should of been given a world Cup as a manager, he gambled with Gazza when other managers wouldn't of and boy did he play his ace, RIP Sir Bobby an absolute gent 👍😉
England still to make a World cup final since 66. The Dutch 3 finals in that time. Looks like your players from successful underage teams may help to bridge that gap. About time they won it.
Could have if Southgate didn't implode with his technical naivety against Croatia in Moscow three years back. Following England are all the same "what if, so near, maybe, buts, if only....".
Italia 90 was a typical Scottish performance. We lost to the “unknowns” in Costa Rica (probably minimal scouting or research), great win against Sweden and then unlucky to lose against Brazil when a draw would have been enough to qualify. That wasn’t a poor Brazil team and had many players who would feature in ‘94 but despite winning the group they were beaten by Argentina who had made a meal of their group. The Argies (Maradona excepted) were as poor a team as has ever reached the final.
I fancy England to do well. Yes, Russia a different environment but like Gary said, Brazil will be strong. I back Gary to score lots. Come on England!! England World Champions 2018!!
ireland in 1990 was full of allstars .. some team pity not anymore, saying that look at england, wat can they do with a pick of at least 50 players noting, there useless lol

Football coverage as was his sidekick Jimmy Hill
Bobby Robson
His thick skin was one of his masterstrokes!
Gary Lineker: "It gives us a chance to put the record straight" He later went on to shit himself on the pitch against Ireland
And ever since whenever Gary needed to go do a poo poo he would say " I'm just off to set the record straight" 😁
It’s about time he changed the record 😉
2 draws .. way to put the record straight Gary 😂😂
I'd be on that pitch, for sure..
God Bless Bobby Robson. A true Gent.

Jimmy Hill urging (in 1989) England fans/media not to get ahead of themselves.

8:08 if only Jimmy Hill could tell FIFA what a ridiculous idea having a 48-team World Cup would be, the competition would have far greater value.
*Plus any thought of a World Cup once every 2 years!* Gone are the days of any sort of real football visionaries aside from money value.
