    Just to clear things up, I added a TLDR in the description. Apologies if the audio is a little scuffed on this one as I missed a weird glitch in the first part and well.. the second part had the torrential downpour. Still, please let me know of your experiences with this in the comments, and I will be continuing to look into this issue and sending BSG information as I collect it. As always, thank you for watching!

    memory goes from 12 to the full 32gb during raid, clear memory by opening/closing the menu. once this memory builds up a second time it will crash the game(bonus points if it happens 5 minutes left in the raid timer cause the game wont let you back in within that time frame)

      It does that gradual buildup over the course of the raid and clears *mostly* after you leave a raid. I've had situations due to the stellar server setup where I've had to fully relog, and the buildup did actually transfer as far as I saw (but I scrapped any data that had that happen to keep it as consistent as possible).

    One problem for me is also that Tarkov seems to load just much more data than it needs. It fills up my 12GB of VRAM immediately, no matter what I load into, although I have almost zero spillover into system memory. Changing settings and the like doesn't even change anything about the VRAM usage, even though you would expect it to go down significantly when you go from max settings to minimum.

I had 100fps at all times on Streets last week, then Tuesday, Im sitting at around 50-60fps. I've been doing research on why since then and todays journey brought me to ram. I notice that Streets uses damn near all of my ram which is 32GB. I ended up downloading a ram cleaner program that clears that standby ram you were talking about every 5 minutes. Didn't help my frames but maybe it'll be useful overall.

      The biggest hog on steets FPS is all the AI/players…
      At the start of the raid - FPS is 100+, and end of raid (like last 10 mins) it’s good.. as this is when all AI/ players are loading in at the start and then dead at the end and extracted at the end of the raid..

    If you want to know what the 'auto ram cleaner' does deep down inside, you can read the Unity (Tarkov is on Unity, right?) documentation about the Garbage Collector. Specifically I suspect this setting simply enables 'Incremental GC'.
    These two modes basically offer a tradeoff between doing smaller garbage collection tasks more frequently (which may slow things down) or waiting and do them all at once (which will cause stutters). The GC works (kinda) by looking at each reference to every object the game stores in memory and trying to determine which objects don't need to be around any more. That can be a computationally expensive task when the Streets lobby has six chads simultaneously mag dumping thousands of bullets into RAM.
    It's also worth noting that the Unity docs state that the incremental GC takes advantage of any idle time created by vsync. So there's probably a complex relationship between memory, overall framerate, and on/off combos of vsync + Auto RAM Cleaner.
    I suppose there can also be a performance increase of having incremental GC if that helps keep the game's memory more traversable - you imagine each time the game has to 'find' some object (like did this bullet his this player or whatever) there's some tree structure of memory that it has to go through each item until it finds what it needs. When a game gets progressively slower over time, to me that's a byproduct of that tree getting too big or too deep. The GC might help trim it down and boost framerates back up.

    Man this is trippy because for the first like 2-3 years I played tarkov I had a shitty computer, and I when I would feel laggier than usual I used to hit esc, it would stutter, then back out. I would repeat this until I could hit esc twice and it opened and closed quickly with no stutter.(I would have to do it about 3 times) After my game always felt better. Now I have a good pc and the menu still stutters, but it makes me think that it has always done this, and you are the first to notice.

    I saw an old guide years ago saying to use john koshy's ram cleaner and it clears the working set and cache, not sure if thats the in use ram like you were saying but it does clear out a few gigs of ram when it gets to super high use but i get a massive stutter and frame drop then the ram use slowly creeps up again. If the ram cleaner ingame is also the same way then i can see why they wouldnt want it to randomly kick on in raid but at the same time if its only working in the menu it should communicate that.

Playing streets worked fine with my first game, when I played streets for a second time without a reboot, using GPU-z to monitor my system memory. I found that I was going over my 32gb of system memory and the game would crash every second game on streets. I bought a cheap 128gb SSD and use it only for virtual memory. I set the memory at 35gb (I just wanted more VM than my system memory). My game no longer has crashes and even looking around in game is smoother.

  • @killswitch_disengage

    Very nice and thorough test. Although I wish you would have logged the FPS as well, as in my opinion that is what is actually noticeable without the OSD. If the game uses all the memory, that's not really a problem as long as the system remains responsive, but this is obviously not the case clearly 😂
    In my own experience, the FPS decreases significantly after a number of raids, typically becoming unplayable after about 10 raids without restarting the game. Let's stay the first raid on woods I have 150 FPS average. Regardless of the map, after a few raids, the FPS and frametime will be so inconsistent that it is disturbing to play. I've had times where the FPS comes down to under 45! From 150 to 45 in let's say 10 raids. Restarting the game fixes this, but that is hilariously stupid.
    I understand that this may be a very intricate and complex issue, and this so-called memory leak may only be a part of the problem.
    Thanks for taking the time to diagnose and hypothesize though, not many bother. ❤

    I am going to add this since I've been playing since Ram Cleaner was implemented. I would be cautious of using it because Deadly Slob back in the day had his ram fail which he believes was linked to activating this setting. I've also had a set of my ram fail shortly after enabling this setting back when it was first implemented. This was many moons ago and they may have fixed whatever was causing this, but considering the results in this video, clearly it's not working correctly so I personally would rather just restart my game every couple of raids rather than potentially having it break something (atleast until BSG have made it work correctly).
    Again, it may not be an issue now but I'd rather warn people so they can make a decision. Also if anyone has used it for multiple RECENT wipes could they say since I am personally curious if they have fixed this issue (not curious enough to risk another set of ram though).

    About the drop when you opened the menu, maybe they programmed to be like this. Did you feel the game froze for a second or two when you opened the menu?
    For example, dumping memory is one of the most common reason for stutters. You do not want stutter while you are moving and shooting.
    This stutter is caused by something we call Garbage Collector (GC) in a very important moment. The GC has to "freeze" the process so it can access the memory and clean whatever it's not being used anymore.
    Remember a few wipes ago where the game just went crazy with the stutters whenever you shoot? That's why.
    It is just the way C# and Unity works (got o unity docs, Manual/performance-garbage-collector.html)
    Unity has some tools and techniques so you can have more control over GC, so maybe, just maybe, they decided to trigger GC when you open a menu (?), since if you are in a menu, nothing critical will happen if you have stutters.

    • @klemintime1452

      Thats a smart design choice- but I still have to do some more testing to see if this actually activates correctly. Secondarily, I found another really weird behavior regarding memory that I will hopefully have a video up on in the next couple days so keep an eye out for that too.

    Ive been trying to set up an overlay myself and if im reading it correct im finding a massive difference between allocated vs actual usage.
    For instance on my setup loading into woods im allocating 14gb vram and using around 10gb for about the first minute in raid and then quickly dropping to 5gb for the remainder.
    System ram also allocating around 14gb however never going above 5gb on usage.
    Every chance im reading it wrong however.

  • @Rappoltt
    @Rappoltt ปีที่แล้ว

    Sadly, this doesn't conclusively dispel a memory leak, because you didn't load back through the maps to see if the RAM usage was significantly higher. This DOES show that it isn't so bad that 2-3 raids total would merit a restart from a memory leak.
    It's still true that the game needs to be restarted after a bit, but it might not be a memory leak causing it. I'd say it's unlikely that it's a memory leak, because I still have available RAM by the time the game is stuttering, has laggy menus, and is losing FPS.
    If you run more tests, please also include a frametime chart or 1% and 0.1% low FPS. Not just average FPS, because the RAM cleaner may cause or fix 1% low FPS sags that wouldn't be reflected in the average FPS.

    • @klemintime1452
      @klemintime1452  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry about that, I should have shown that data. There was a couple of runs where I did actually do it a fourth time by loading back onto streets (including after this most recent patch). There was a ~500 MB difference in RAM usage both times I tried it. This was in *offline* though, so the number may be better or worse for online testing (but likely not by much).
      For FPS in the future, the main reason I hesitate to include such data (1% and 0.1% lows) is because it gets completely nullified by some actions when I'm in online raids. If I play the raid at all and interact with any lootable object or player, there's a stutter, so it completely kills that data. If you'd like, though, I could add those in the future, but only when they actually provide some context.
      Thanks for the constructive advice and for watching, and do keep in mind I did two other videos in a series on this, which is pinned in a playlist on my channel :)

    • @Rappoltt
      @Rappoltt ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd assume worse for online, because of all the extra data from players, but maybe not too much more now, after the small packet update. @@klemintime1452
      That's a great reason for leaving out FPS, I didn't consider that. Plus the HUGE, inconsistent drop at the beginning of every raid, and always being at the mercy of the servers dropping packets or a player picking up a laggy item. If enough people comment about it, it might be worth putting an annotation in related videos.
      This is actually my first video of yours, so congrats on catching the algorithm's recommendations, haha! I'll go check those out, thanks!

    0:56 You aren't close to VRAM spillover, you are already past it. As the GPU gets close to it's VRAM capacity it will start culling memory, getting rid of what it doesn't need right now and send stuff to the RAM, you won't really see the full 8gb used since the GPU drivers will do everything they can to avoid it.

    • @klemintime1452
      @klemintime1452  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, you're right. Its a mix of VRAM spillover when I am in raid and the memory leak, since the behavior I discuss in the video occurs even when that VRAM limit is not close to being hit (but obviously getting close will drastically affect consumption, as seen in my data).

    • @shepardpolska

    Makes perfect sense to me that autoram cleaner would only work in the menus. Simple yet elegant solution to solving how to reduce calls during gameplay. If you're cleaning out ram during gameplay, you're losing cycles to clear it, then losing cycles while calling it back into ram. Personally, I'd only want it to clear at the menus while out of raid. I would guess this is working as intended, if nothing else I bet that's what BSG would say. . . and I can see the logic behind it.

    again NO.
    it doesn't just suddenly work when you go into the settings.
    but if you are in your settings then all of the stuff around you doesn't need to be loaded in ram. because it's not being rendered anyway. SO YOU DROP IN RAM USED!!!
    you wanna know what a memory leak really is?
    that's when you just finish you customs raid. and instead of unloading the customs assets. it misses that command and keeps them loaded. and now you go to interchange, and load all of those in aswel. and oops. 30gb in use by tarkov.
    if you only have 16gb of ram then most of this will be on your harddisk. in the pagefile.
    and that last bit of unused ram that you see. is reserved by the operating system.
    how ever. those of us who actually have an amount of ram. notice that there is an increase in ram usage. litterally using twice as much ram as the game normally does. even when in the main menu screen.
    and you didn't experiance this in this video. so this isn't a video about memory leaks. and this also isn't a video showing WHY ram cleaner is bad. because it's most deffinatly bad.
