Say what you will about Steelheart, judging from the location artwork, you really have to admire the guy's attention to detail. In the midst of subjugating the city, fighting off rival epics, hunting reckoners, and heaven knows what else, he still found time to carve his name on the front of the Field Museum and to have a new sign made for the (renamed) Newcago Theatre. Having the new sign done in the iconic style of the original was a nice touch, and it really is nice to know that the city's new overlord is a patron of the arts. A lot of superpowered, homicidal maniacs would have let those little things slide, but not Steelheart, and that's what makes the difference between a High Epic and the regular kind!
Great video, as always! I finally have a copy of this game; and now that I'm almost done with the novels, I'm even more excited to try it out-- thanks to you!
I have been tearing through your videos and discovered this. As a huge Sanderson fan I didn't know this game existed, thanks for the exposure, it looks great! Have you had a chance to try out Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archives or Mistborn: House War? Both are from different series in Sanderson's universe.
Did you end up getting it? And yes, this answer is 2 years late - turns out I've found that the TH-cam comment reporting skipped several. Been making a little journey back through and catching comments that were missed.
@@WatchItPlayed Yes, yes i did and I reviewed it and gave it the 3MBG gold medal award. Mostly because i love that the co-op happens all at once, and you can stagger each players actions and make combos, as opposed to the pandemic norm of "one player acts, then AI reacts"
Watch It Played Thank you! I’m super excited after watching this!! I’m trying to work through it so that I can teach my 75 yr old mother to play. Yes. She likes playing board games, and I just taught her how to play Lords of Waterdeep.
I acquired the game through a BGG trade and felt obligated to read the book. So I purchased it on Audible. I'm on Chapter 7 and now I can't wait to play the game! :)
So to clarify for the dice rolling and placing in rows - the only real reason for that is that it provides 2 Errol’s of dice you don’t want to keep and after the 3rd roll you are forced to keep what is left? The actual row mechanic doesn’t have any other bearing on the game? Did I interpret that right?
You are corrent that the column doesn't matter, but it is very helpful when playing with others. Because you don't have to keep pace, you can easily see what roll the other players are on, by the number of rows with dice in them.
It's important to remember that once you've chosen to keep a die and placed it into a row, you can't go back and roll it again. So the rows are a reminder of that as well.
Looks awesome. I wish i could buy this, i love when games come with more than just the necesary to play. But i guess if i can fin a TTS version to play it would also be great!
What we're showing in the video are actually the plastic planning tokens that come with the base game. You're right that the kickstarter version came with metal tokens though.
Alternative video when talking about where to find what all the abilities meant you said "on these two pages" which pages were those exactly. You might have shown them on screen and I just miss them but I didn't see what pages.
I shot this long enough ago, I don't know which section of the video you are referring to (if you want to share a time stamp I can check). That said, this might be a case where it could be just as fast for you to to flip through the rule book to look for those two pages?
I played this for the first time yesterday and there’s just one rule text I don’t understand. On page 21 there are examples of Ability/Equipment cards. One involves cards such as Bank Vault, Bribe, Checkmate…. It’s where you can use a certain die symbol to activate the card and get 3 symbols in return. The part I’m confused about is that it can “alternatively be used to Move or Remove a Barricade.” I’m not sure I’m understanding it right because this doesn’t make sense to me. Why would I spend a die that could be used to Move or Remove a Barricade to activate a card that just gives me the same option? Am I missing something?
I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
Each spot is a little lower than the other (each spot is raised a little more than the other). It's easier to tell in person, if you aren't looking directly down on it, and are more looking form the side. Do you have a copy of the game? I so, you'll see what I mean. Hope that helps!
That's exactly how I feel. My wife and I are huuuuge Brandon Sanderson nerds and love board games and this game does look fun, but $100? It's Co-op King of Tokyo. $100????
That's not really a fair comparison. King of Tokyo is a very light gateway game that has much less going on than this game does. Also components aren't free, either. With the miniatures, a lot more dice, and especially all the GameTrayz (which a lot of gamers buy to upgrade their games and keep them organized a lot better) it's not really that unreasonable to expect a higher cost.
I agree that it's not a fair comparison. I also agree that components cost money. However, I think it was a mistake to make THIS particular game have an entry point of 100 dollars. I don't think the gameplay warrants it. It feels like something that should have settled between 30 and 40 dollars. CMON just produce Cthulu Death May Die with wayyyy more value than this game supplies at 100 dollars on kickstarter. The IP here isn't as well known either. GameTrayz may be great, but now you've decided up front that everyone needs them. I personally want to get this game as a fan of the source material and feel bad that it's going to cut out some of the core audience who won't be able to come off 100 dollars for this.
I wanted to add some positive comment here to feel better about some of the negativity. I do think the game looks good and it's nice that the production quality appears to be strong. Also, this is another great, clear, concise video from Rodney. I consider him the best source for learning to play games and I've supported this channel since I discovered it.
Not gonna lie, this is a little stiff of a price point for a dice game. Looks fantastic, just not sure at 100 dollars. Maybe a budget version without the game trays would be perfect.
I can't say for sure as I don't like to pre-announce my videos too far ahead of time, mostly to avoid disappointment if my schedule needs to shift around. It's something I've thought about though!
Watch It Played lol it’s ok. Just learned about the game today. You mentioned that on the Epix power track that if it tries to go farther to the right then it’s possible it just activates the symbol to the right the number of times it would have moved. What I want to know is does anything happen when you try to move it farther left, in the weakening direction, than is possible. There appears to be a blue star to the left of it, but that may be just for decoration or something
Watch It Played sounds good. I’ve checked the rules and found nothing, and since they all have the same blue star I realized, it presumably was to indicate where the “containment” ability is used I’m guessing.
Hey Frank - The difference in the editions is noted on our Kickstarter page. www.kickstarter.com/projects/nauvoogames/the-reckoners In brief, Steelheart/Deluxe edition includes 23 metal components, metal coins, a metal Steelheart miniature, a printed Reckoners booklet with exclusive new content, and card sleeves for the game. The retail version is the normal game as shown here, but it also includes the Kickstarter promos (as do the Epic and Deluxe versions).

If you've read the first book, David starting out with a motorcycle is kind of hilarious.
