*NOTE:* Here's a question which might be helpful to address: _"What happens if the Fellowship player advances on the Quest Of The Ring track, causing the Sauron player's black ring to also pass over a bonus? Does the Sauron player get the related bonus?"_ It's a very understandable question, because the answer may not be obvious at first. This isn't addressed in the video, because it can't happen. Due to the construction of the plastic tray, when the Fellowship advances, only the Fellowship ring will advance over a new symbol. The Sauron player's piece, although it's dragged along with the tray, will _never_ cross over a new symbol itself. Only when the Sauron player advances their own piece, will they advance over new symbols. It's a clever piece of design!
I think it's easier to visualize Sauron and the fellowship each having their own identical tracks. A friend was trying to tell me that the point tracker was a push and pull mechanic. It's really not. Just a cool visual.

Gosh, what a gorgeous game. Including landscape cards in a setting so steeped in adventure and beautiful locales is a brilliant idea, and I'm always interested in seeing different takes on the iconic LOTR characters. I see why this is getting so much good press, I should find a copy myself!
Rodney, just watched a piece you did with The Dice Tower from 4 years ago about the enemies of board games. And may I say my respect for you has grown exponentially. Awesome job sir, and Merry Christmas.
Hello Rodney! Good to see you again! I am an early viewer from the Mansion of Madness days but had retired from board games for a while. This game caught my eye in the news and thought to check your channel in case you covered it. Lo and behold you have! So helpful as always! Thank you and take care!
You are such an excellent teacher! I recently received the game and have done a learning playthrough solo as both players. I’ll have my opponent watch your video before we play. It’s an excellent game especially for LOTR fans!

Well thanks so much for being with us all this time. Yep, the young'uns are grown up and out of the house. Hard to believe. That said, they still come home and play games with dad :)
Since we are big Seven Wonders Duel players, and LOTR fans, this game has a lot of appeal. I think it will be going on the Christmas list. As usual, fantastic job on the video!
Love this video! I paused it and purchased it immediately halfway through your explanation. I absolutely love the couple videos I have seen from you and your reiterations really help the gameplay stick in my memory! The only peice of feedback I have is that it would be wonderful at the beginning of the video if you can tell us the number of players for the game and game length. Thank you again for your excellent video!
So glad you're enjoying! And you'll be happy to hear I always mention the number of players at the very start of the video :) Hit play on this one again and within the first 20 seconds you should hear the player count. I don't comment on game length as this varies WILDLY between groups of players. If you have a group that plays fast, the game will go fast, if you have a group that plays slow, the game will go slower.
Thank you! I just received this as a gift for Christmas and watching how to play it. I have War of the Ring but this looks interesting when we want to play a shorter LOTR game. Pretty neat how you can win 3 ways! I like how the quest track shows the journey closer to Mt Doom while the Nazgul's are closing in.
I like the way your tutorials have evolved over time. They're a little longer than they used to be (for games of similar weight), but they're a bit more thorough and it's harder to get lost in the details. In particular I noticed you started to more regularly give mid-tutorial recaps ("as a reminder, your turn will either be taking a card and playing for its benefits, or refilling up to your hand limit"), and then you bridge that to something else ("but there's one more thing you can do on your turn, which is X"). These recaps take extra time and don't give any new information but I find it really helps improve understanding.
This was a very nice bit of feedback to receive. I don't expect viewers to pick up on these choices I make in how to present the information, but I certainly hope on a subconscious level they are having the intended effect. To have someone notice the evolution and the intention behind it, and feel that it is beneficial is _very meaningful_ . At least in part, because when I make these kinds of adjustments, I don't know if they WILL be beneficial (I just hope they will be). These extra steps make the tutorial longer (hopefully not by much), however, my hope is that they make the time a viewer spends with them _more effective_ . Thanks for taking the time to share your positive experience with the approach. It's encouraging!
@@WatchItPlayed I do a lot of teaching myself and started to think about how your style had changed over time. There's the obvious stuff like the presentation (basement decor, wearing the plaid shirts instead of the WIP shirt, that piano medley that starts when you walk to the table which gives it a very friendly feel), but also the way you explain things has improved and I was trying to pinpoint exactly why. The length of the videos increasing is definitely noticeable (compare 13 minutes for 7 Wonders Duel to 23 minutes for LotR Duel, videos that explain roughly the same information) but IMO it's worth the cost because there is less rewinding and I know I can just watch from start to finish and you will pause to give me the needed context way more often than past videos. Often times while watching I think "a recap would be good right about here" and very often you end up doing one within the next 30 seconds. In my experience, the fastest way people get confused in explanations for anything (whether that's board games or tutoring a math class) is that they get bogged down in the details and forget the big picture. Board game rules are kind of unique in the sense that there's always some "broad objective" you're trying to do but you have to learn 50 really annoying rules to achieve your objective. So stepping back constantly and saying "by the way, I know I just told you about 6 different card types, but remember on your turn all you do is take a card and play a card" helps players keep track of what they need to know at any given time. And it means if they forget what a card type does, they can ask you about that while playing but it's unlikely they will have *also* forgotten the overall objective. They'll know they need to play cards to get points but they know they just forgot what one of the icon types means rather than all the rules of the game. Anyway, this is a long comment but I'm glad you find it encouraging. From experience, I know it can be hard to get feedback on stuff like this, since very few people notice it. They just know that your work is good, but can't explain why (which is good feedback in itself of course).
I have a question about conflicts. Say someone has three units in a region and then someone else gets a red card that lets them add three units to that same region (so equal number of units) My question is who starts to remove their pieces first? Because the person who goes second will win the conflict. Does the resolution on conflict end with no one having units left or will one person have a unit left? I hope that makes sense.
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Excellent video as always!!! I just got the game yesterday so very timely as well. Just looking through the cards and tokens, I can see so many tactical choices.

Fantastic!!!! ...This is a great one for you to do because it's so popular and I think it will be so for a long while since both 7 Wonders and this new theme are SO appealing!!!
Hey Rodney, haven't seen all the comments so maybe someone mentioned it but you forgot to mention that one of the token has a feather that can count as a faction for thee alliance, you would only need 5 green alliance card s to complete your alliance for the win.
Hey hey. When teaching games that have various tokens, each with their own unique effects, I don’t cover them individually (unless, say, there’s only 2-4). In the video I share a couple, and then direct the viewer to the player aid sheet for the other tokens they may encounter (like the feather), to see how they work. And for the very curious, I leave the sheet on screen so you can pause if you’d like to see the variety.
This looks like an interesting game! Would there ever be a scenario where a fortress token would want to occupy or take over an area already controlled by an opponent’s fortress token? If so, how is that resolved?
my favorite board game allways changes. Ithis game is my favorite since I bought it at essen. I love 7 wonders duel, I love lotr, so this already is an awesome combo for me BUT I also loved the game mechanically, therefore it became my new favorite immedietly.
Hi Rodney, I have a question probably you did address it but I did not see it. If a player can't pay for a card, no even with coins, what happen? I mean is it posible?

Hi guys, did Rodney mention what the tower figures do on the regions? I got the benefits on their wonder card but I did not get their use on the board. Cheers

What if there's already an enemy fortress in a region where you are about to add one? Or is there only one "place fortress" effect for each region? Thanks for the video - excellent as always!
Now I own this game, which means it’s time to make my family members learn from Rodney 🤣 they are well aware of “Rodney that will teach you the board game while I set it up” 😁
Thanks for the tutorial video! There's one tidbit I'm irked on in terms of the Quest of the Ring track that also doesn't seem to be covered in the rulebook. When the Fellowship player advances on the QotR track on their turn, they move the Frodo & Sam plastic piece to the right, which also moves the Nazgul piece as well. The Fellowship player would gain from bonus spaces they land or pass over. *Would the Sauron player also gain from any bonus spaces they land/pass on the same Fellowship player turn?*
@@aba_dab_o It isn't mentioned in the rulebook (or the video), because it will never happen. It’s just not possible, but that might not be obvious at first. The construction of the tray means that when the fellowship advances on the track, it is dragging their opponent’s piece as well, but that piece isn't "advancing along the track", so it's not covering a new symbol (and never will when “pulled along”). Only when you advance the Nazgul rider piece itself on the tray, will it ever advance over a new symbol. Hope that helps!
Hi Rodney. Thanks for the amazing tutorial! I have one question that wasn’t covered. You mentioned we can take cards for free but hold onto them without using their effects immediately. Does that mean I can accumulate multiple cards and then play/sell them all in a single turn? For example, if I held onto 4 blue cards, could I use them all at once to move the ring? Thanks 😊
Hi Tinka, can you provide a time stamp for where I indicated you could take a card and hold onto it for use later? I don't believe that is said in the video, but it would help me to understand what gave that impression.
Hi Rodney, it was the part between 6:07 and 6:27 minutes. You mentioned that the card is free to take, but to play it and gain its benefit, we need to pay. This made me think that I could take cards for free and hold onto them without using their benefits immediately, saving them for a later turn (for when I might have skills/coins needed to use their benefits). But perhaps I just misunderstood :).
I’m still unclear on what the actual benefit of having a fortress in a region? Is it just working towards the win condition of having a unit in each region or is there an additional benefit?
Two main benefits: one, it can't be affected by combat (so it's more effective for maintaining your presence in a space than a unit) and two, it's presence in a space, so it helps you work towards that win condition.
Quick question: when receiving the benefit of arrows do I have to move my units? For example, if I receive the benefit of 2 arrows and have 2 units on the board, could I move just one unit?
Is any kind and any number of benefits on any type of card optional? Like let's say a landmark telling the player to move a unit to an adjacent landmark as a logical option to skip in some cases
Am I to assume that only one fortress can be on each location at one time? The instructions say nothing about the fortresses, so I wasn't sure if each opponent can have a fortress at one location. Akso, am I to assume that the green cards sauron should also try to collect? Even though technically they don't have their own fellowship.
Correct, fortresses only come from Landmark tiles, and there is only one tile for each space. And yes to your second question as well, the benefits of the green cards and token you can gain from them you’ll find detailed in the video. Thanks for checking it out!
Apologies if you mentioned it in the video and I missed it: if the fellowship player advances the tray and it causes the Nazgul piece to land on or pass a benefit icon, does the Sauron player gain that benefit? I assume not, since it isn't the Sauron player's turn, but wanted to confirm. Thanks!
It isn't mentioned in the video, because it isn't possible, but that might not be obvious at first. The construction of the tray means that when the fellowship advances on the track, it is dragging their opponents piece as well, but that piece isn't "advancing along the track", so it's not covering a new symbol. Only when you advance the Nazgul rider piece on the tray, will it ever advance over a new symbol. Hope that helps!
What if a fellowship player moved the ring board and the Sauron player's black ring passes over some bonus? Is it triggered for Sauron player? Or is it only triggered when Sauron player passes it over on their turn when playing blue cards?
One question remains for which I could not find an answer easily: If the fellowship moves due to a ring card and the nazgul as a result lands on a ring bonus, does the sauron player get the benefit? I would guess no, but I am not sure.
@@TheLordFisch It isn't mentioned in the video, because it isn't possible, but that might not be obvious at first. The construction of the tray means that when the fellowship advances on the track, it is dragging their opponents piece as well, but that piece isn't "advancing along the track", so it's not covering a new symbol. Only when you specifically advance the Nazgul rider piece on the tray, will it ever advance over a new symbol. Hope that helps!
*NOTE:* Here's a question which might be helpful to address: _"What happens if the Fellowship player advances on the Quest Of The Ring track, causing the Sauron player's black ring to also pass over a bonus? Made by a local carpenter.
That shirt is awesome Rodney, where'd you get it??
I truly don't recall!
Thanks for a great tutorial!
Thank you for the kind words!
What if there's already an enemy fortress in a region where you are about to add one? Or is there only one "place fortress" effect for each region? Thanks for the video - excellent as always!
@@darrenbelcher6121 There won’t be, because they come from Landmark tiles, and there is only 1 for each different location. Hope that helps!
Now I own this game, which means it’s time to make my family members learn from Rodney 🤣 they are well aware of “Rodney that will teach you the board game while I set it up” 😁
Very happy to be a part of your game set up process. We’re a good team :)
Yes! Been waiting for this one!
Ta-dah!
Thank u rodney
You’re very welcome!
Wow, what a great-looking game!
Thanks for checking it out!
@@tinka7777777 keep watching past that part (up to 7:02) and let me know if that clears everything up.
You can do a partial resolution - completing one move, but ignoring the other.
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you for the answer!
@@BrenoSalomonReis My pleasure!
hey could you please make a video about azul? i'm thinking about getting that game but i don't really get how it works, thank you :)
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: th-cam.com/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/w-d-xo.html&t=342
Is any kind and any number of benefits on any type of card optional? Like let's say a landmark telling the player to move a unit to an adjacent landmark as a logical option to skip in some cases
Correct
Do you have to play or discard the card as soon as youve taken it? You cant keep it for the future?
They must be played or discarded right away.
Question, what about the Land Mark Tile called "The shire"? How can I get it?
It's only shown in the web site download part
Sorry, I think you're asking about a promo, but I don't have anything to do with how those are distributed.
6:17 are you saying you can take a card, no discard it for a coin and then on a future turn then go back and pay the coin to use that gollum card?
If you take a card, you must either play it right away by paying any cost it has, or "instead" discard it. You must pick one or the other immediately.
If you were to remove a stronghold from your enemy, does the related landmark tile also go back so you can play it yourself later?
Nope, you just remove the tower, but you keep the Landmark.
@WatchItPlayed Oh, got it! Appreciate the clarification! Now I'm off to buy this game.
@@bryanstarke1313 It's a clever mechanism - have fun playing :)
I have a question that isn't very obvious here: Can you keep cards in your hand to play later?
@@partypao Chedk 5:30 and let me know if that addresses your questions. Cheers!
What if a fellowship player moved the ring board and the Sauron player's black ring passes over some bonus? Is it triggered for Sauron player? Or is it only triggered when Sauron player passes it over on their turn when playing blue cards?
Hi Boris, I've just created a pinned comment to address this question (you're not the first person to ask it). Hope that helps!
Can both players have a fortress in the same spot?
It won't happen, as there's only one Landmark tile per location (and Landmarks determine where fortresses go).
Hope that helps!
what is the function of the towers?
They give you presence in a location towards one of the victory conditions, and can't be removed by combat.
nice
thanks< 3
You're very welcome!
Did I miss a detail? What happens if you try to place a fortress where the opponent already has one?
That can’t happen. There is only one landmark tile per region.
There are 7 Landmark tiles, 1 for each area where a fortress can be placed, so you'll never have an overlap that way. Hope that helps!
Sauron collecting coins seems to imply that his savage horde of orcs seems to have a sophisticated economy, lol!
Everyone likes shiny things!
Well, they are familiar with the concept of menus which implies that cafes and restaurants exist in Mordor
If my soldiers finish and i put all 15 in the map already by using bounce effect. after that i take red card and no soldier left. What should i do ?
The number of units is limited, so in the case you describe you wouldn't be able to resolve the effect to place a new unit, and would just ignore it.
@WatchItPlayed thank you
