Krupa was so important, to the evolution of the modern day rock drummer, this guy should be placed in the RRHOF, because he was truly the first rock n roll drummer, before rock was ever invented.
That`s right; you nailed it; it`s that 'inexplicable extra something' that sets GK above the rest---from ANY generation. The man 'had sooo much SOUL he could barely control' !
I'm not sure I see pleasure there, seems to me a man tortured to express himself as much as he could. No disrespect, but Krupa, like Moon, has a bit too much wild flailing monkey style for me. Nonetheless, both huge influences.
Moon was a drunken clown who wasn't considered much of a drummer till he died and rock and rollers, who knew nothing of great drumming canonized him. Krupa was a genius who literally invented modern drumming. No comparison @@jscan
Sal Mineo played Gene in the movie about Gene's life and he had when he was young banging around the house. Sal did a great job. I took lessons but stopped around 18 but lucky to keep the beat I still tap my fingers like I did at 13 14 years old I'm 75 now.
Whether modern drummers know it, or not, Gene Krupa is who they're trying to be like. He started what many see as the quintessential drummer. Ragged hair, crazy face, hands flying, drum solos!
Before there was Keith Moon there was Gene Krupa !!!Keith definitely got his style from Gene.Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. You couldn't get greater than Gene Krupa !!
Buddy, I was commenting on someone's comment of how Moon was inspired or copied Kruppa's style. I didn't say he was the same or better than Kruppa. Moon copied even the facial expressions. In fact, he even looks like him here 1:30 - 2:15
Gene Krupa, had a tremendous impact on every drummer that followed him, not just in the playing of the drum set, but in musical performance, he was also an entertainer.. there really is a difference between a musician and an entertainer... combine the two, and you get players who become stars, like Gene. I don't think there has ever been a more exuberant drummer, until say, Keith Moon, at least that I'm aware of. On these now 80 year old clips- his FEEL comes out of my computer monitor... like makes me want to go play my bass.. an amazing thing. I URGE any of you watching this, to find "Ball Of Fire" The movie is really great. The scene that follows the "Drum Boogie" production number, with Krupa in a booth with some of the cast, singing the words, and him playing "Drum Boogie" on a matchbox, is just wonderful.
Gene Krupa made every member of the band sound 1000% better when he played. He played for the song and the band, and he elevated it all to a whole new level.
Gives me warm feeling to know he was an American with clean Polish blood. Unusual Polish temperament. Actually Poland does not advertise it self but people even do not know where the graduation hats come from. Gene Krupa the original first best drummer in spotlight.
You can see the guys in the first clip have their eyes glued to Gene, even while they're playing themselves! Massive smiles on every one of them as well. I couldn't imagine what it was like to see this man in his element.
I absolutely love the style and panache of Gene’s drumming& the sound of his kit also has an excitement all of its own. He swings & man does he do so. He is also a very musical player not just power-housing as of here. To round it all off he was a fine showman too. Yes he was also a fore runner of rock & roll & I dig all that too but dunno what Gene himself thought. I think he would have been kind. In the meantime GK was integral to the great swing era. The great Buddy Rich, another phenomenal drummer once said “Could you imagine jazz without Gene Krupa”? He was spot on, for it really would be unimaginable. Yours in drums Chris 🥁
I have always been deeply inspired by Krupa's burning sense of swing. We tend to see him as a soloist, blurring chops, lots of notes but how many cats used space so, wonderfully almost painfully hip as he? Listen to those explosive tacits
I'm a Buddy Rich fan. Nobody had the speed, power, or technical ability he possessed, and he, for that reason, will always be the best ever. But Gene was also a one off. He especially for the era in which he came to prominence was untouchable. His solos were musical as well as technical plus they had a pulse, which unless you are dead had you tapping your feet. Add to that he was a splendid showman...so even if you didn't know what he was playing and how good he was you could still enjoy his performance. A brilliant drummer.....
Of all drummers I've heard Gene Krupa reverbrerate with me the most. Must be his style which I can understand and feel in my bones. It is a visceral style in that the beat goes down the hip area and impels one off the rocker chair.
Gene himself always said that Buddy Rich was the best there ever was, and Buddy always said that "none of us would even be doing it if it weren't for Gene. he's our leader". fair enough-- but Gene Krupa had more style and showmanship than any drummer ever, before or since
Buddy RICH giving credit to someone else!? ''STOP THE WORLD AND LET ME OFF!!''] joking aside and also granted that response was likely from 50 yrs ago BR will always be considered the Master and KRUPA will be the real granpappy of the drum solo!! I always respect my influences and they are definitely up there !!
B.Rich for me was a little bit of a circus act....great showmanship to please the crowd with flamboyant virtuoso speed, but not to much of an artistic input....while Krupa mixed it all, great touch, felling, groove and showmanship.....ofr me the real pioneer of modern drumming. Buddy Rich was great, but you can't really comare his artistic legacy with the ones of Krupa, Joe Morello, Elvin Jones or Art Blakey
@Randian Winn I don't agree the BR was a better drummer than GK. BR was definitely faster than him. But that doesn't make him better. But, that's just my opinion, obviously. Both were legends, no doubt.
I don't concern myself with whether Buddy or Gene was "better." I've always loved them both, I'll continue to listen to the music of each of them. And I suspect that the rest of civilization will too, for as long as there still is civilization.
One of the best . Such complicated rhythms. They take much thinking about . I am a drummer , I love drumming . I am not as good as this . But I am good. My friends do a dance to sing, sing, sing, and I play the drums
That was exactly who Krupa made me remember right now! Have always loved Krupa´s playing since I was a kid. I would love to have the 100th part of the "swing" this cat had...
Wonderful, incredible, stuff from my all time favourite drummer. The1st Drum star:- Gene swung like the clappers. Yet none of what he does is over complicated. Purely accessible brilliance which can clearly be understood by ANYONE with drums in their soul. Notice how drummers back then, angled the snare away from themselves to fire off those snappy rimshots. Buddy Rich (another genius ) said it all when he commented "Can You Imagine Jazz Without Gene Krupa ?" Yours In Drums:- Chris Newman.
GENE SET THE PACE FOR ALL OF US WHO WERE , ARE , AND FOREVER WILL BE DRUMMERS !! THE CLASS AND VERSATILITY HE SHOWED WAS SIMPLY AMAZING !! SHEER CLASS AND MY FAVORITE ALL TIME DRUMMER !!!!
Mesmerizing to watch. Quite the showman and a guy who loved to swing. I can see why Buddy Rich thought the world of Gene. Great posting. Krupa and Rich have influenced many of us drummers. Thanks for introducing some younger drummers to the magic of those who brought the drummer out of the shadows and into the limelight.
GENE KRUPA WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER WHO EVER LIVED! HE WAS IN A CLASS BY HIMSELF. EVERY GREAT DRUMMER ATTRIBUTES THEIR ABILITIES TO LISTENING AND WATCHING GENE!
Gene had far more charisma than Buddy. He was my favorite and the father of the drum solo. Also a great gentleman with class. Gene was much better in his younger days, not saying better than Buddy, just better himself, before life and illness began to slow him down.. It's a shame the whole Buddy Gene drum battles came out later in Genes life when he had lost a step. I would like to have seen such a battle in Gene's hey day.
💯 Buddy might have been a better technical drummer but he was an ahole and he couldn't touch krupa's charisma and the fact that Krupa was an Buddy loved Krupa and looked up to him He had that natural thing going on. And a great personality which Buddy did not have.
I was just a tyke when I first heard Gene Krupa, but I'll never forget the impression he made. It was the first time I heard someone make drums sound like music.

Agree!

is @Hotters 7060
Krupa was amazing but if anything Buddy Rich was the first rock drummer
I have never seen any other drummer that gets as much pleasure playing the drums. Watch his facial expressions.
Jeff porcaro...as happy as Krupa?, yes, as good as Krupa? better shut myself the fuck up. cheers

Those guys can't be on Gene Krupa's taxi squad
@Hotters 7060 laughable, a "drum battle".
@Hotters 7060 he's in the top 10 drummers of all time

Gene Krupas Drum Roll Was Epic 3:11
Gene had such incredible stage presence and of my all time favorites.
Gene is so musical with his drumming. Its like the drums are singing the song.
You can see the guys in the first clip have their eyes glued to Gene, even while they're playing themselves! Massive smiles on every one of them as well. I couldn't imagine what it was like to see this man in his element.
I'm at stop sign in yonkers NY I see GENE Kruper way ...with a picture of a drum. Wow I never knew he was this awesome
Gene with the sublime Anita O'Day in "Drum Boogie". Great stuff, all this plus Roy Eldridge on trumpet !
Try Barbara Stanwyck, not Anita O'Day.
1963dodgeboy I have the cd with the
track "Drum Boogie" and it is Anita O'Day on vocals,Roy Eldridge on trumpet, and Gene on drums.
Maybe O'day recorded the tune but this video shows Barbara Stanwick & Krupa
Gene Krupa with Barbara Stanwyck, in Ball of Fire. Fantastic drumming & a Great movie,
complete joy on his face...brings joy to mine! That's Entertainment folks!
That "not" fill at 9 seconds was brilliant!!! Who ever thought a stick twirl was a fill before and it was perfect.

Gene Krupa, an absolute ball buster, an American original.
I am old school. Krupa was my favorite and his drum solo's you could always the rhythm.
inspiration to both Keith Moon and Cosmo Kramer... just brushes the surface! Thanks

If you check out some Keith Moon drum solos, you can see much of the Gene Krupa inluence. I think that Keith Moon was driven by the same engine that powered Gene Krupa. Gene was truly a man in "tune" with his drums.
Same engine = drugs
At one point in the video he almost looked like Moon, very uncanny
WHAT A VERY, VERY TALENTED GUY, OUTSTANDING !!
Love all these swing big band drummers I did a few jass clinics with louie bellson in the late 80s along with Greg bissanet
Just saw a movie about him on TCM so I had to look him up! WOWWW! What a drummer!!!
Gene, Buddy Rich, Louie Belson. All were masters but I think Gene and Buddy are the inspiration for modern rock drummers.
He's better than rock and roll.
In his younger, healthy days, Gene could match Buddy’s speed, but he slowed down over time, especially with failing health.
However, he will always be the king of “ Feel and dynamics “..
