- Star Trek Online is an old and complicated game based on an IP even older and more complicated, so how you make your first character can feel like a big task, so let's walk you through that process.

In terms of storylines: TOS is best as it gets to play every fed mission including the DSC arc but no other Fed faction gets the TOS missions.
If I ran DECA I would be sending you and Spencer and other content creators a 👍free promo box to say thanks for what you all do for the game
If they were smart, they would be helping these youtube creators a lot more with free promo ships on the Tribble server atleast so they can review them more easily. I come to these guys for honest reviews of all things sto related.
Just a headsup for anyone using this as a guide: Romulan Republic has 2.5 free races. Romulan, Alien, and you can buy Remans. Alternatively, if you get later into the game with another character and reach Tier 5 of the Romulan Republic Repuation, that will unlock the Remans for free.
Romulans are the best. In addition to other positive traits, they get twice as many duty officers as any other faction
Wow I didn't know that.
@@play030 Oh? Well, all toons get 8 doffs for free at their Academy, but Romulans get 8 more for free at the Romulan Command at New Romulus. Making 16 doffs every 4 days.
Stu I been playing Sto on and off for years. I know my way around but when I'm in a battle field and I see other players I'm blown away by how deadly most everyone else is compared to me. I try to get better by watching your videos but I don't understand half of what you're talking about. I guess the greatness of this game is that there's always something to learn. I like your content.
I want you to know that I took your advice. And it's been helpful. My character is a couple of months along and doing well. I see what you're saying about being overpowered. Honestly there's not a lot a side from elite tfos that can stop me... And that's mostly because the team fails an objective, not cause I got shot down. My takiness is way overpowered, but my DPS still needs work.
It's not all about armor. If you use all human bridge officers and pair that with a trait or two that buffs hull Regen, you'll find that your damage control is more than adequate to quickly repair any damage... And that includes while in combat if you use science consoles that buff the same.
My ship has all the characteristics of a tank; I have devices and traits that suck enemies towards me, and damage them, while also making them an easier target for the heavy hitters. Even when fleets are detonating inches from my hull I weather the storm well. This works well with swarms, and or large fleets consisting of destroyers and frigets, but when the team is counting on me to contribute to the destruction of 1 large target, and we're on a time table like in elite... I can't help but feel like I'm letting everyone down. So I've been sticking to Advanced and random tfos.
I like Discovery era warp jumping effect but disappointed that there is no equivalent effect with the KDF side.
Beside the storyarc,Romulan character and crew have some field advantages for DPS captains
My advice to new players would be a Romulan Tactical aligned with Starfleet. Then you make a new toon for each Recruitment Event.
You'll end up having:
1 Romulan Tactical (Starfleet),
3 Delta Recruitment toons: Starfleet, Klingon, and Romulan (Klingon),
1 Temporal Recruitment TOS Starfleet,
1 Klingon Recruitment Klingon, and
1 Gamma Recruitment Jem'Hadar (Klingon).
To round it out, you add a DSC Starfleet toon. You'll have 4 of each Starfleet and Klingon
I've been playing since 5th Anniversary. I still have no idea what I am doing in STO. However I love watching your vids Stu.
Star Trek Online story can be summed up with the phrase "It's all Sela's Fault"
It surely is. At least until after the Iconian arc.
A month old, but I'm a long term player since beta, since thick and thin. While not as good at min-maxing as some people I'd give the following advice:
1. Despite a lot of people talking about how you should star tactical, I actually recommend engineering as the first profession. The reason is simply that you quickly get an ability called "Miraculous Repairs" that will pretty much fully heal your ship, and there is a trait just in the default trait pool that will instantly reset this if you take too much damage, too quick.
STO is a DPS focused game, so many people talk about how Tactical and Science are the best as they both have different approaches to DPS, with Science going for exotic particle builds mostly which are harder to do early on, and even then to really maximize usually take a lot of investment in the game, including in many cases real money. Tactical on the other hand is straight forward "pew, pew, pew" kill everything.
The thing is when your new, and starting out, I just think engineering will save you more often, and the basic fighting style with turrets and drones is easy to set up and intuitive for a new player. Not to mention you can do high DPS with any character, so while tanking focused by design, you can still wind up doing just as much with engineering. Not to mention I find some of their holiday kits like that "Anchor Of Grethor thing" from Christmas that pulls everyone into a fire with hellraiser chains to be amazingly powerful and underrated and that's pretty much free and something you'll get by just sticking around until Christmas and working on the event.
That said I do find basic engineering bridge officer skills to be the most boring, that said things like emergency power to weapons are great for enhancing your general "pew, pew" in space, and some of the rarer skills you can get from the exchange from lockboxes like the recent "Malicious AI" can be a lot of fun.
2. One thing Stu didn't mention is that if your doing Federation or Klingon, one early power boost, if minor, is to go to the bridge officer vendor on the base and buy Cardassian Bridge officers, and use them in lieu of the ones you get from missions, and then just use the bridge officer training guy to customize their skills. They do have some minor space enhancement due to their photographic memory. So use them for your ship slots as much as possible to begin with, and later when you get better bridge officers with better space traits you can retire them. The highest quality bridge officers you get otherwise are best for your ground team as they generally have traits useful for ground combat.
This is something I think 99% of players don't consider, especially when people talk about how KDF has Nausican Boffs with space advantages early on/for free players, and the Romulan ones (which to be fair the best) almost all have space traits, including the one Stu mentioned.
As far as I can tell you do not need the Cardiassian species as a player race, to recruit them as bridge officers. So this can bring any of the Federation factions (once you reach the star base) up to snuff there.
3. Most paid items can be obtained from other players for in-game currency, albeit due to the age of the game the market is inflated. As a general rule though, unless you are going to be buying an account unlock or something like slots, it's typically best to buy lockbox keys and the sell them on the exchange and then buy what you want for energy credits using the money. This is more reliable than lockbox gambling if you are going to put money into the game to begin with (I am aware many players will not). Just a point I am making because it does not occur to many people who are new, and simply look at the shop, or the items coming from lockboxes and gambling mechanics. Selling the keys and buying what you want actually winds up being more cost effective.
Not a character tip, but something to consider.
4. Of the starting factions I think the two best are "Original Series Star Fleet" especially if the "Temporal Agent" special recruiting event is running, or Romulan Republic (best to do when Delta Recruit is going on, which I believe it is now). That said the basic "current timeline Star Fleet" does give the widest option of races.
As a general rule TOS Star Fleet has access to some starting missions no other faction does, where say Discovery Era Star Fleet has most of it's missions accessible to the other Star Fleet factions. Also the TOS intro missions are done in the spirit of the old TV show (which might turn off some players) including homages to some of the terrible special FX, and well... the way they depict Gorn speaks for itself.
The Romulan Republic has some of the best writing of any of the factions despite some janky bits here and there in the mission structures. As a long time player they are my second favorite.
Just to point out, buying the 4 bridge officer tokens will net you 192 million while the 10 keys will net 120 million at the same-ish zen price, so get the 4 elite bridge officer tokens instead it is the most cost effective.
Hot take but I view STO as the preferred alternate timeline than Picard. It's pretty much accepted that STO is in it's own universe so contradictions don't matter post-Nemesis, but because I actually prefer the game's story over Picard overall, it suits me fine to accept BOTH universes as seperate and my head canon leans on STO more, at least up until the Iconian War where the arcs got very lackluster after that.
I would like to see some more aspects of STO possibly canonized
Like the enterprise F, a perfectly functioning ship getting pulled out of the mothballed and captained by a canonized shon
Granted, it would need a rename since the enterprise G just appeared
Also more terrans
I really loved terran gambit
Wow, learned something new as a Veteran. I had no idea the Star Trek Online wiki had migrated off of the Fandom platform.
Yeah, they couldn't exactly advertise the move on the Fandom run wiki because Fandom would've just taken the announcement down.
My first Delta recruit (2012?) was an alien gen half Cardassian, half Lethean who was a product of the Dominion War. He didn't feel at home on Cardassia or Qo'nos and found where he belonged in Starfleet! 😊
Thank you.
Tired of watching STO content creators who just complain and use their platforms to show people their stuff and call it a build.
New players don't care or even have access to these builds.
This is what we are missing, reasons to start playing STO 2024. But, we mostly get videos of unattainable builds for new players and how awful the state of the game is in.
It's very refreshing to see content a new player may find useful.
Old message, but I have similar thoughts. I have been playing on and off from the beginning, and to be fair I would like to see new management for the game that might clean it up a bit, and perhaps consider a new ad campaign.
I will also say I'm not sure how "unobtainable" the builds are. I mean as someone who has been a lifetime subscriber since day #1, I clearly have tons of resources and have paid into it beyond that as I like it even if i don't play non-stop anymore. To be brutally honest given that almost anything can be bought with obscene amounts of EC, all it takes is work to get anything right now, and as long as your not planning on having tons of gimmicky characters (which to be fair I do as I have been doing this since beta) it should be fine. Most MMO players only have one or two characters.
Also they do at least 3 major event give/aways a year (Anniversary, Summer and Winter), and during some of those things major fleets give away tons of stuff on their own. Not to mention the events and the items they give out. It shouldn't be difficult for anyone who puts the time in to become perfectly viable even in elite TFOs if they want to be.
I mean sure, your not going to become a god in a couple weeks without paying, or be able to do things like kit out the La Sirena from Picard so it can single handedly destroy a Borg Armada head on for your sick amusement (and possibly anyone in a STF with you who notices ), but to be fair that's the kind of stuff people who have played over a decade do to amuse themselves, and the fact that it's possible is what keeps people coming back and tinkering with this. :)
For me, the part of the Romulan start that I have trouble ignoring is the fact that Tovan's voice actor quite clearly recorded some of the newer bits on markedly better recording equipment, and also did a better job of emoting the second time around.
One of the best character creation engines ever.
Just wish we could merge that part of the code base with the chargen from Champions Online. I want Beast Legs for my captain. (I also want a Riker-style trimmed beard for my superhero.)
The character creator was the only reason I gave STO another chance. I was done with the game but then one day I was drawing a Star Trek OC when I thought, man wouldn’t it be nice if I could make this in STO. I took a chance and I mean it’s not perfect obviously but still close enough and I haven’t stopped playing since.
Can you remember when you used to have to pay EC to change the ship name
Yeah. I also remember when character/uniform editing cost ec. LOL at charging ec to change your rank on your uniforms.
0:45 the storyline actually revolves around the Romulan faction because 2409 Starfleet doesnt really have a story. The Nimbus, Dyson, Iconian, and J'ula arcs are all have direct immediate connections and context to the Romualn faction exclusive missions
and Cryptic said TOS Starfleet doesnt have aliens because they want it to be a 1960s exerpience and would have to make all kinds of custom 60s style alien gen parts and they dont have time for that
The TOS restrictions for the sake of authenticity just makes the race options of the Discovery Starfleet look half-arsed by comparison.
Another great video, Stu, and your comments are spot on. Funny(?) story: I've only been playing this game for the last couple of years, but even with all of the info out there, I didn't really look things up before I started because I wanted to just start playing. I made my first character (which was and is still my main) a Disco Fed because it was chronologically earliest and that made sense in my head. Didn't realize all characters eventually merge into the same timeline and now I'm a tiny bit sad because I definitely prefer the 2409 transporter and warp out animation. Honestly though, this is my biggest regret and it's just a cosmetic thing, so I think I'm doing pretty good overall.
Excellent vid Stu! Pick Nausicaan because we need more Nausicaan pirates in game...j/k. Like you said pick what you like and go have fun with it!
I didn't realise that TOS Klingon was hidden away in the character creator until a few weeks ago.
Are federation characters still limited to two superior Romanian operatives slotted? That used to be the limitation. You could get plenty but only equip 2 on your ship stations
Non-Romulan characters used to be limited to only Tactical boffs with Superior Romulan Operative. That is no longer the case, however. Federation, KDF, and Jem'Hadar characters can now purchase Superior Romulan Operatives of any class from the Fleet Embassy, so they can can now outfit a ship with all SROs. That said, SROs are still much easier to obtain on a Romulan faction character.
Really appreciate you shouting out the fan-run wiki instead of Fandom.
I used to know what I was doing. Decent in PVP back in the first few years. But since PVP died i left for a while and after a few years off came back and that LTS zen was awesome. I dont know what I am doing anymore lol.
I concur with the Rom's having the bast story. Due to "Him", in docking two points. So the Romulan starting arc is 8/10.
Is this going to be the start of a new upgraded guide series?
Can you play Romulan Republic without the expansion or do you need to buy it? The Legacy of Romulus starter pack.
You do not need to buy the Legacy of Romulus expansion to play a Romulan Republic character. The expansion pack just contains a bunch of ships. In fact, I would actually recommend against buying the Legacy of Romulus expansion pack because it contains no tier 6 ships, so everything in there is very out of date.
@@Stu1701 I'm so sad that liberated Borg is only on lifetime sub though, that's exactly what I wanted to play.
Hey stu, your guide videos still help me even now, and i was wondering
do you have a video guide on different types of ship classes? E.g, cruiser, escort, science vessel, and their sub-types like sci destroyer and battle cruisers, or if not would you be willing to do one???.
There is a TH-camr channel name called JUSTICE GAMING (it was Brent justice)
He has a Playlist that has all the factions /ships etc.
Hope this helps you!
(oh BTW he talks..... ALOT.... Like..... ALOT very long winded, lol we've been trying to get him to shut up or not talk SOOOO much but at the end of the day it's his channel so, something you might have to deal with, lol)

@@PhillipLemmon thank you this helps alot
@@LoneWolf0397 no problem!
happy to help!
I was able to recreate a Nightelf from the WarCraft universe. I love all the available Tailor options:-)
a good video for anyone new to the game, great work. could you do one about the dil exhcange next? that thing still confuses the heck out of me lol
For my romulan I picked klingons Cuz I liked the way the alliance uniform looks, lol
Klingon faction is better for DPS if u can have an all Nausican bridge crew. And Federation is better for tank with an all human bridge crew. What do u think?
I suppose you're not wrong, technically. Nausicaans' Pirate trait will give a small damage buff, and the Human trait Leadership will increase Hull Regen. Though Romulan Operative is definitely better than Pirate, so really Romulans are better at DPS, but could still get Human officers if they ally with the Federation.
I kinda wish we had a Kelvin timeline Klingon option since the Klingons from into darkness had a pretty unique appearance that I thought look pretty intimidating, I always preferred science for the AOE skills that always seem to help when you have to fight multiple enemies in the ground based fighting.
Pretty sure the Kelvin Klingon forehead is also available on the TNG Klingons.
@@Stu1701 I'll have to look again haven't played a kdf char in a looooong time.
Made a character that looks like Frasier Crane. 10/10 best character I've ever made in any game.
You made your own Morgan Bateson? Excellent.
Not sure if there is a current version of a bridge officer skills guide, if not that may be one of the most confusing parts of the game these days. With there being skills for ground, skills for space, and add on the ships have abilities if you level them etc.
Hi I hope I get a detail step on how can I play missions that are not part of the main ones now I am on the psn
Thanks
Oh cool Space Barbie Ira .
Don't care, I proudly have Engineer characters, their abilities make me feel, even while putting out decent Deeps, as freaking invincible even in a glass cannon style escort ship!
He made an engineer from alien! As an Alien character! 😂
TOS has quite a few races missing that were in the original series
TOS SF does not have access to Caitians either.
That's because the devs have claimed that the TOS Starfleet is exactly what the name implies; the Starfleet from the TOS series. The Caitians weren't made canon until the movies and did not exist in TOS, so they're not available for the TOS faction. Just like the "Alien" race, they were left out to keep the faction authentic TOS.
I can see where they're coming from but to be frank, it just makes the Discovery Starfleet faction look half-arsed by comparison.
Great video captain!
#LLAP 🖖
I totally dont need this and am enjoying it anyway
Context is important? Context is for Kings.
Solid advice
I don't want you to influence me, I want to be taught how to play the game. I don't know what to do with the options I'm given.
💯👍🖖
