Tim Foust & Geoff Castellucci Vocal Range Comparison

  • Tim Foust and Geoff Castellucci are amazing bass singers who can sing not only rumbling low notes but beautiful high notes. Their vocal range almost reach to 5 octave and every notes they sing are surprisingly clean.
Tim Foust can sing high note up to all 4th octave in chest voice and can sing down below 1st octave using growl notes which is very strong and resonant. In my opinion, nobody can sing growl note as good as Tim. He often sing 5th octave in falsetto and it is very gorgeous to listen to.
Geoff Castellucci's low chest voice notes especially around mid-high 1st octave are really clear and stable. Geoff recently started to sing unbelievably low notes using technique called "subharmonics" and that is strong and can produce solid sound as chest voice.
I wanted to make this video because they are 2 of the most favorite bass singers in the world. and they have similar range. They are really great and talented singers, so I didn't intend to make this as "battle video" , just comparison of 2 singers.
This video is quite long and I wanted to make more shorter, but after putting videos I really wanted to include, I couldn't cut out any video… so if you don't have time, only watch the part you want to see!

I’d like to think Tim is the master of growl in acapella, and Jeff is the master of subharmonics in acapella. Both are phenomenal basses.

I heard Ptx, Voiceplay & Home Free in concert & VIP up close & as a musician: many of Tim's "growl" notes are low chest notes that sound growly cuz a little sharper/country-ish (my bass gospel uncle sounds like that), but has a beautiful 'pop' singing voice: "Tim Foust- 'Can't Help Falling In Love' ", Avi's def. operatic/pop/rounder w/a "sweeter' breathier singing voice, Geoff's also rounder/pop & lovely fuller pop voice than Avi..All pretty amazing & consistent..😊

Its great to see an up-to-date vocal range video for Geoff and Tim. However, Geoff's C#5 at 4:20 sounds very chesty in comparison to the D5 afterwards; it sounds much more similar to the chest G#4 than any of Geoff's falsetto. These men are both talented and you really can't compare them. The ring of fire was lower for Tim in the video as compared to competion..
When he was young he started as a tenor but with puberty, change of voice. He kept a voice coach to keep His upp range. Thus the the 5 natural octaves.
And would sould someone explain the word chest as compared to natural voice? I'm not joking, I don't know.

Hey this was really well made but there are a lot of mistakes. Tim's lowest chest note is in fact an F1. If you listen to the Sing-Off version on Spotify, it basically takes out the sound of the audience so they're easier to hear. When Tim hits that F1 it's a lot more clear to hear when he hits it (headphones are required tho 😂 😂). Another thing, Tim's lowest growl note is an A0. I saw some of the comments about the Sold cover and that made me think again. I heard the octave up version and that made me think again, but the overtone got to me too, so I'm still a bit stuck on that, but he hits an A0 in Think A Little Less (he hits it either once or twice😂). And one of Tim's F#1 chest notes was actually an F1. You were off by a semitone. For Geoff, his highest recorded chest (or belted) note is an Eb5. It was a several-day-ago thing so I'll give you a pass on that one. Also, Geoff's C#5 was belted not falsetto. If you want another C#5 belt there's one on the Moana Medley when he says "you little semi-demi-mini god OUCHHH!!!!" (sorry for being cringy 😂). One of his G#1 "chest" notes were growled. His B1 in the Moana Medley was chest but the G1 after that was subharmonic. His lowest countable chest note should be an E1. That E2-E1 slide was intentional and it matched perfectly.
Non-mistakes (just stuff I was thinking about lol 😂)
I was also thinking about this as I was watching this. Some time ago Voiceplay did a cover of Phantom of the Opera. In the beginning Geoff hits a D1 but one thing that got to me was whether it was growl or subharmonic because although that definitely wasn't chest, it could be subharmonic, his growls are super airy and they get airier when he goes lower and it wasn't airy at all. And in the Moana Medley at the end, do you think he growls a B0 at the end (Geoff lol)? And for Geoff again 😂😂 instead should it be lowest RECORDED subharmonic? After all, he IS hiding a LOT of his talent from us. He just showed us his new highest belt 😂😂😂😂
Anyways, nice video. And it's fine to make mistakes. That's why were here to help 😊😊

Its Ethannn Thanks for commenting and giving me a lot of advice!!
I've heard Sing Off version of I Want Crazy on Spotify, and I thought it was too airy to be chest voice, because I heard some kind of air rumble, but I have to recheck it!
As for his lowest note, there might be A0s in Sold, but all I heard was A1 with subtle E2 layered, and I couldn't prove the A0, so I didn't include it… And I'm sure that it's a growled A1 in the end of Think A Little Less.
Geoff's C♯5 in Elvira is very strong (reinforced) falsetto, in my opinion. He did the same thing in Queen in 5 min.(You can hear him switch between chest to falsetto at B♭4)
I've never succeeded to hear D1 in Phantom of Opera (I always hear D2), so I can't judge it whether it's a growl of subharmonic :c
And I think Geoff's growl slide in Moana Medley is G1-somewhere around D1 as far as I checked with piano!
Again, thanks for commenting!! I enjoyed reading your comment and had a great debate!!!

@@hayatropical2659 haha no problem! For Tim I can understand what you're saying, but for Geoff and his high notes, I still don't see from your point of view. His high belts are in mixed voice lol. It does sound like falsetto because of the fact that it's fifth octave from a bass (WHICH IS FRICKIN' LEGENDARY), but it's really mixed voice. If it was falsetto then he probably would have stayed in falsetto throughout the entire phrase. I see the register you're talking about, it's called masked head voice (you probably know it but lol). Geoff doesn't use masked head voice, he does mix them, and mixed voice counts as belts. He probably has a heady mixed (head-dominant). But it's not falsetto. And if you can find comparisons (like his D5 falsetto and the Eb5)(ik they're two different notes but that's the best I can think of since he still owes us a lot of talent) you can hear the difference. But anyways, thanks for the reply! And ik I said no Tim but the rumble was probably either Tim busting the speakers or the timbre of his voice. And if you listen to Timeless, he sings an F1 in chest. He does C2 C1(growled)(pause) C2 C1(growled) F1 F1(both chest) C2 C2 etc. and he does the same but chests a G1 the second time. But yeah... thanks again for the reply!!!

    • @matthewdockray9745

Its Ethannn the D1 in phantom of the opera is an added bass effect. Not countable

    • @hayatropical2659
      @hayatropical2659  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Its Ethannn To be honest, I'm not completely sure about mixed note, but I wanted to say he switches mix or falsetto to chest in the high part of Queen in 5 min. If you listen to very carefully, you'll find that he first quickly changes from chest to mix or falsetto E♭5 and tops that, then descends from E♭5-C♯5 and switches to chest and keeps descending from B♭4-G♯4-F♯4. So there's a high possibility that the note is mixed and what I'm pointing as “reinforced falsetto” actually might be mixed note… I have to study these music theory harder as a people who makes vocal range video…
Anyways, thanks for giving me advice!!

His A0s in Sold! are actually A1s. You can tell it by raising an octave up. Those notes definetely doesn't sound A1s when you raise an octave up.
And I made this video based on The Range Place (A site that debates about singer's vocal range) , so I stated Geoff's voice type as bass.
I think both singers have fantastic ability, so I can't decide who's better, in my opinion!

It's indeed one of his lowest notes, but I didn't include it since it's a random fry note.
