Anish is playing beautiful chess.. he still has that practicality about his play, but he is also jabbing at his opponents and taking risks too. Thank you for the coverage, as always!
Gm Hikaru ("Naka" to you) is closing in on 1 million subscribers, yet your analysis is easier to digest, and of course your diction is far superior, so anyway, here's to the 100k when it arrives ;-)
Nepo is ahead by 0.5 with 2 rounds to go, and he wins on a tie, which means Giri has to score a full point ahead of him in the remaining 2 games in order to win. If Nepo draws both his remaining games, Giri has to win both of his. There's a road to victory for him, but it's looking highly improbable.
@@oaklandsfarmschool8791 Giri needs to score a full point more than Nepo in the remaining games, in order to be half a point ahead of Nepo (victorious) in the final standings.
That makes sense, in which case he wins by 0.5 - basically to have any chance at all Nepo has to drop a full point. If Nepo draws twice Giri has to win both, if Nepo loses both remaining games then Giri can get through with two draws.
He could have played solid but he needed to win, he properly would have been more upset if he went for a quick draw. He needed to take chances even if he loses
I miss the annotations in your menu, Mr. King. Anyway, your analysis is as good as always (if not better). Gracias por el esfuerzo. Un saludo desde Colombia.
My girlfriend just asked if you had a beauty cam while filming, well I don't know and I'm definitely here for the great chess content but I guess I'll hand that one over as a compliment to you, Mr King.
Lots of analysis of this game on YT - but this is by far the best. Well analyzed, following the big line that Fabi had to win to stay in the tournament - explanations of the possible motivators.
I'm starting to like Giri's play now more and more. It is as if he got rid of any doubt he had throughtout all these years and started to actually play for a win rather than just looking for a draw. This is how Ding was playing 2 years ago and this is the form you need to have if you want to dethrone Magnus.
Daniel, you are still the best chess commentator out there! Thanks for your work and dedication! By the way, wouldn't the game Nepo-Wang deserve a little comment about the strange way it ended? It seems to me that even though Nepo had a better position, Wang wasn't lost yet and could have put up some resistance. Did I miss something there or is my suspicion justified?
Yeah as a spectator with an engine we could see that it was *only* like 1.5 down (which is pretty dire anyway). I watched the conference with Nepo and Wang Hao and they were both pretty convinced that it was completely lost. Wang Hao said that he felt very tired and it seemed like he didn't feel like expending energy and time on what he thought was a completely lost game!
@@Blayd9 I had put their position on my computer. After a while it reached to 2,8. Wang lost by playing Kg3 instead of Kd6, but after Kd6 also he should work hard to hold the draw successfully.
Is there much more to say? Wang was demoralised after being outplayed little by little and decided he had had enough. It was a bit premature, but understandable.
A Maxim win tomorrow would make things interesting for the final round. Logically though, should Nepo avoid defeat in his final two matches, he should win the candidates. I don't see Giri winning twice more on demand. His win today was heroic enough. Tough one for Fabi to swallow this, wouldn't surprise me to see him struggle in the final two rounds.
The final position was similar to giri’s final position against ding Loren, with the queen and king on same file with the knight in the way and the rook cutting off on the other file!
Question about draws, prompted by there being four decisive games: is this less of a problem than it was? There have been tourneys where there have been almost no decisive games.
I think the players have started playing for a win more instead of going for drawish openings such as the Ruy Lopez so they have a chance to win the tournament. It doesn’t matter if you come second or eighth in this tournament, only first place can play Magnus Carlsen for his title
Most of the players have no chance to qualify and being stuck in Siberia anyway they seem to play for fun the last few rounds. Maybe a reaction to the tension of having to avoid losses earlier in the tournament, or waiting for a year to finish a tm that had already gone wrong for some of them...
As much as I love Fabi, I have to say that that was a master performance by Anish and he deserved the victory. I’d like to see him face Magnus. I think he has a better shot at beating him in a match than Nepo does.
If Giri wins the next game, and Nepo draws; then the last round will be super exciting. Nepo won't know if a draw is going to be enough to go through. And Giri has nothing to lose. That said, both Nepo v Carlsen or Giri v Carlsen will be interesting for different reasons.
I like optimists! But already talking about 100k subscribers - with more than 20k to go! Well, to me it seems a little premature. Best wishes of course, but as I can only subscribe once, I can’t really do very much.
Top as always by King Daniel :-) But would like to hear an explanation of Wang Hao`s resignation. Seemed premature for many of us. People on Chess24 were upset. Especially since a draw could give Giri a much better chance to win the toureney and face Magnus.
Wang Hao seemed to have had enough of that miserable position. He's a pawn down with the constant risk of losing another one. While premature indeed, the result was pretty much on the wall.
Check the pressconference with Nepo and Wang on Fide's youtube channel. Nepo shows a couple of lines towards the end when asked about it by the interviewer.
But what if Nepo AND Giri lose both their games and Caruana wins both? MVL must have a chance even if it is extremely slim, again if he beats Nepo who then loses the last round and Giri also loses his games.
@@stevengordon3271 Caruana can't win though. I checked it up and Nepo has a better tiebreak. I give MVL 1% chance, Giri 9% chance and Nepo a 90% chance of winning the event.
It deserves some mentioning that the engine, during the live commentary, indeed prefers Rh1-f1(!) over white castles. It not only prevents tactics connected with ...Qb6+, but also intends to bring the king to the safer side of the board. - Fabiano likely felt the pressure of a dire must-win situation with white, and, as so often happens, lost the objectivity in the process. Allowing Anish to win in extremely classical Sicilian fashion.

Fabiano has to be devastated by this game. Hard to imagine.
