At 16:18 "and then we had a little... suspension of the tournament for unfortunate reasons" - a classic British understatement in the finest sense. And that year off changed everything, and was undoubtedly a key factor in Nepo's ultimate tournament victory. Thank you, GM King, for this comprehensive summary of Nepo's journey through the Candidates. I for one have a much better sense of the player who is going to face Magnus later this year.
Great review of Nepo's games. I don't know if I read correctly but It seams that Wang Hao retired from chess after the candidates. This tournment was really hard on him. It would be nice to see a couple of his best games so we all can appreciate how good he could be when inspired. Thanks Daniel for the hard work.
Wang Hao mentioned health issues. It matters more that his health improves than that he plays professional chess. If his health really improves, he might handle stress better and want to play top chess again, but that would be a bonus.
@@irradiatedbadger People everywhere (Reddit, TH-cam etc.) were complaining that he resigned prematurely against Nepomniachtchi in round 12, and many went as far as accusing him that he threw the game. Mostly Anish fans, I guess. GM King analysed the final position thoroughly, showing why that's *not* the case. Check out his video, and the comments underneath - they're shameful, sometimes downright racist, complaining about "those Chinese players" that spoil the sport. People who never write comments were spewing hate without even having watched the video (which disproved their point). I was disgusted. If such shit happened in Daniel King's peaceful channel that's dedicated to high-quality reporting and analysis, I can only imagine what the comments looked like elsewhere...

I think Nepo should start pumping iron hard. Imagine him not showing around, and then instantly dude of 105kg muscles comes in for the first game. This will scare and puzzle the Norwegian.
Gary Kasparov said that the presence of the bottom two place-getters undermined the whole candidates tournament. This review reinforced for me that the tournament found the best man to play Magnus, which is what this tournament is for.

It went well for Nepo (or should he rename to Kepo? - Russians with K have a fine history as chess world champions, however its not a guarantee as Karjakin showed ;) ) After the Russian Minister of Defense and an incredibly strong Fabiano Caruana where both players essentially showed too much respect of each other (and everybody knew, that if it comes to tiebreak, Fabi will loose) it can get quite interesting. I do not think that yet someone can beet Magnus (except possibly Aronian and Grischuk in single games but not a tournament 1:1), but Kepo is possibly one of the closest currently.

I was watching the witcher with my boyfriend last night. He remarked: 'Geralt looks a bit like that chess-youtuber you always watch, doesn't he?' Can't say he's wrong.
They really outta have the road to the Championship like they did in the past. Play Interzonals leading to Candidate Matches as there are so many GM's in the Chess World now. Seems to be quite unfair to limit it to just a few guys and even more unfair to have a 'pick' placement when others are clearly so much stronger. There is little hope for many strong players under the current system. They must be wondering why they should strive to play well with such little chance of reward.
There are pros and cons to the different systems. At the moment there are several different routes into the 8-player candidates tournament, so it is hard to complain if you didn’t make it through.
@@PowerPlayChess Go to the You Tube channel-VaVa Chess to see Kasparov say why Wang and Alekseenko did not belong in that tournament. Interzonals were best by test except for when they limited the number of Soviet players which was unfair bur perfectly normal to do back in them Cold War days.
@@northshores7319 Wang Hao belonged in the Candidates because he qualified fair and square by winning the FIDE Grand Swiss! You could compare that to the old Interzonal, except the Grand Swiss gave even more opportunity for others to shine. Alekseenko qualified through that route, and was then selected as the FIDE wild card - but that is certainly more contentious.
May be i shouldn't say this, but it feels like FIDE's decision to whom would play as the wild card was very political. It makes me sick. There were other players more eligible for the wild card. For How long must Fide appease Russia?

I've never fully understood this sentiment by Kasparov. Everyone has to/gets to play everyone the same number of times

It is best to set an attainable goal. Chess is difficult. Improvement comes steadily and with regular practice and play.
You don't need a World Championship match to know who is the best player in the world, just look at the ratings.
