I think Ben and Adam completely underestimated the no "e" curse, but I also think that Sam and Toby should have bought another roadblock right before the end of this video. I feel like both teams either underestimate or overestimate things often

That would have been hilarious, but the odds of them being able to do that in less than half an hour is small. I don’t think most people would stop in the first place, and not too many of those that do would go along with it.
There are no “happier to stop over” and kinder people in the world then Kiwi’s in my opinion. (I’m no Kiwi btw) I think it would be way easier then you think. One example: I tried to hitchhike away from the airport, which is way harder then from most places (if you are on a lonely road, people will feel like they got to take you, among masses, they feel like ‘somebody else will’.) Within 10 minutes a car stopped. The couple inside told us they worked at the airport and their shift had ended. They asked us where we were going, we told them our end destination for the day, some three hours down the road, and they said they’d happily take us there. They just needed a quick stop at their house to change. We told them they were crazy, that’s a six hour drive for them, back and forth. But they told us it was fine, “this is what we do in our free time, make road trips”. And so they took us there. Crazy. And it is just one of many examples. So, I really think this would have worked and be really easy too.

I thought of you all when I got to that part lol
I think a cool idea for a future season would be to fly to Reykjavik, Iceland, and then race to drive around the island…but in different directions, and you would leave challenges along the way for the other team (from a deck of cards or something so it’s fair)…so the first few episodes would be leaving traps for the other team and then the second half would be solving the challenges while getting closer to the destination, i think that would be fun
I was actually thinking about something based in Iceland as the entire motorway system is basically a giant roundabout along the coast.

The problem with iceland is that yes the southern part is quite wsell maintained, but some roads on the northern part can be quite dangerous. And you're almost always restricted to the roads, except for the main tourist areas; nature protection is no joke there.

Sam trying to do athletic stuff is always hilarious. Him having to watch a TH-cam on how to kick a ball in a previous episodes sums him up perfectly!
Sam's clearly got an athletic build and does outdoorsy stuff, so it's surprising how consistently he fails at those kinds of physical challenges. Maybe he's just a stamina build instead of a strength/dex build
He finds the hiking very easy, but can barely kick a rugby ball (fine, acceptable) and can't throw a shoe???

@@josephc.9520 Well, a rugby "ball" isn't a ball, despite it's name. Balls are round, not whatever this shape is! I've played football (the real one, not the American one) for all of my childhood, but I wouldn't know how to kick a rugby "ball"/egg/whatever either.
And I believe that throwing a gumboot is harder than it looks as well, due to their unusual and floppy shape. Sam needed a few attempts to learn their physical properties as a projectile, but then he landed a quite respectable throw.

They can be found in lakes and rivers all over the world. To infect someone tho they need to go deep up your nose. Since most people don't feel like snorting lake water up their nose infections are pretty rare (water usually doesn't get in that deep when swimming or even diving normally). When they do infect someone tho, a very unpleasant death is pretty much guaranteed.

The thing is called Naegleria Fowleri, and it is nasty. If you get contaminated water high up your nasal channel, your brain gets infected and neural tissue eaten. There is no cure and it almost never survivable.

To everyone asking why Sam and Toby didn't just skip the Wellington challenge, let me clarify this. The reward for that challenge IS specifically the 1pm ferry, which they don't get if they skip it. What that means is that Ben and Adam will actually get a chance to complete the challenge (because they still have to complete it), and potentially successfully completing it and making the 1pm ferry. This will now have the reverse effect and put Sam and Toby almost 3 hours behind because they will be forced on the later ferry. Really not a good idea to skip it.
I was so confused at first, thought they threw away a huge advantage thanks for the clarification
Couldn't the team that got there second and is behind on the challenge choose to veto it meaning nobody gets the reward?

Sam could have easily said a gramatically correct sentence when telling Tobi not to talk, such as "Don't talk" or "No talking" but he was so scared of there being an E in one of those, that he instead opted for "No talk".
It just takes longer to mentally spell check every word.
Toby's speciality is math. I guess she is used to saying numbers that she couldn't hold it in in such a critical moment.
On the podcast she says that she thought of it as literally the digit 1 - it didn’t occur to her that it can be spelled “one”

you guys have got to release the map of the game to the public, there are so many challenges that are going to go undone that I'd love to see other people do.
I assume the reason that they don’t is because they want to be able to reuse the unused challenges in future seasons.
@@GoldenSandslash15 most of these challenges are incredibly specific to New Zealand though so it'd be hard to replicate in other places
The thing is, some of the challenges that we see in the season are actually backup challenges. Some of the challenge locations have two (or more) challenges where one is the main challenge but there is also a backup challenge when the main challenge is impossible (like rental place is closed etc)
@@gfrewqpoiu In previous episodes they've shown us a challenge where the place closed (the clock museum) or entire stretches of roads in the board game closed due to irl road works, so your theory doesn't hold much water.
@@mfaizsyahmi In the podcast, they mention that some items had backups and some didn't. The clock museum did not have a backup, but Kerosene Creek in Episode 4 was a backup for something that ended up being closed.

The team in the lead seems to have a huge advantage... you can just get all the coins, throw curses and roadblocks, and be uncontested. There isn't much that the trailing team can even do.
Yeah and the curses seem to be really shit too. Like sam and toby could just drive through the Mcdonalds and not actually eat at them?
Yea it's the biggest flaw at the moment, that and roadblocks being too cheap.
I also don't like holding roadblocks back to a more advantageous location. Wherever you pull the roadblock card is where the roadblock should be.
Also, the team that is trailing behind should be allowed to repeat a task so they can at least earn some coins.
imo main issue to me is just roadblocks on common paths.
otherwise i think its ok since on diverging routes you still can avoid them. ben and adam had lesser coins because they chose to follow the other team's route.

@@eaglecentury3409 this is true but its more of a high risk high reward, where I do think it would be useful to go for the risk since Sam admitted that Ben and Adam are usually the ones with a deeper understanding of the game, so if they know all the cards that involve buying something they can prepare for it, and since their first thought was the grape one it must mean that's one of the most prominent and likely one that would be pulled since they already narrowed down the choices. So if they were to just take those 5-10 mins its still a 20 min time save or maybe 10 with the drive which is ample time for them to catch up more and give them a chance of shooting them with the nerf bullet. Although, one thing I must admit due to them having a deeper understanding it does make it unfair to just prepare for the cards the first chance they get so I won't be surprise if they make it a rule where you can't get the item until you know what the challenge is.

First off, Toby's braid blew me away, I didn't notice before how amazingly long it is.

When Sam and Toby did the grape roadblock I was expecting Ben and Adam to say, well it could be the Grape thing, and we will just do The Snack Zone with a grape flavored snack we have with us.
If I’m not mistaken the road block said you had to buy something grape flavored and eat it
in the podcast they mentioned that they aren't allowed to buy something in advance of a challenge generally speaking; most of the challenges say to buy/find the thing :)

The only downside to the New Zealand game is the roadblocks cost less and effect the game so much more, and only benefit 1st place.... meanwhile the more expensive curses have not provided much catch-up benefits
I think they Ben & Adam got really unlucky with the roadblocks (and Sam & Toby used them well). The first few curses were way more devastating.
But you are right, Ben & Adam have basically lost this already, because Sam & Toby have so many more coins that they can just curse them and throw roadblocks for days.
It might have been better if roadblocks gave at least some coins (like 5 for example) to give the following team some options.
I was kinda confused when Ben and Adam said the "No E" Curse was bad, because so many words include an "E".
Because they want a curse that can immobilize them. You can see how Sam and Toby is not talking most of time because they worked around the curse. So this curse is bad, Adam and Ben want the curse to either slow their pace or stop in their place
@@pharedbrayson4737 that's true for but for 3 hours it's not the worse curse card just keep in mind how long the challenges will take, cause they said wellington takes a lot of talking, but due to the long time it's best to just do it a bit before hand cause while it may be easy to avoid talking if they accidentally mess up those 5 mins will add up more and more so again while it's not the best just the chance of them saying it within 3 hours cause they forgot about the curse for a brief moment makes it somewhat viable.
@@oscarmata1853 My other thought would be if they could use both curses at the same time, and hope Sam and Toby get the song stuck in their head and accidently start singing briefly. A decent amount of elements have an E in them.
Roadblocks are nice and all but being able to place them wherever and whenever you want is pretty cheap. This episode alone has shown that getting hit with a certain roadblock and being unable to complete that roadblock hurts.
If they are coming for the next game, they should be limited to the locations that are on the map, not the roads in between. And so to make playing roadblocks more risky, challenge coins should be awarded from them but they are half it costs to play a roadblock. this way, roadblock spam is countered by being able to get enough power up coins to eventually roadblock the other team back

Its good to see Sam really enjoy the trip, the other seasons he seems to be only stressed out, but now he seems to really enjoy, and I think that is partly because he is with toby.

This season is easily the best yet. The road block system, curses, multiple choices to challenge paths. Brilliant.
That ice cold look from Toby, in silence, as she dons the tie, was killer.

So far the Roadblocks feel way more powerful than the curses. Makes the game a bit unbalanced when the catch up mechanic is worse than the win more mechanic. Still a fun series tho and I am excited to see how it continues!
I recently had an idea for a season of jet lag that you might enjoy using at some point.
Basically:
The board is Canada. The teams start somewhere in the Maritimes - perhaps PEI.
Each city among the top 50 largest Canadian cities can be claimed by traveling there, and doing a challenge. Once you’ve claimed every city in a province, you get the province. Two teams can claim the same city, but not the same province. Once you claim a province, you get point equal to the number of claimable cities in that province, plus two. So, since Alberta has five cities that are among the 50 largest Canadian cities, once you claim all five you get seven points. Ottawa and Gatineau together count as one separate province, worth ten points. However, you cannot claim it until you have at least three other provinces. The team with the most points after 96 hours (4 days) wins.
that's a cool idea but I think you're underestimating how big canada actually is lol.
@@jaiden2458 Agreed, Canada is pretty big but they've made a series where they played bingo across the U.S. and I think instead of 4 days they do 5 it'll give them enough time to get everywhere in canada. But there still is the issue that unlike the U.S. where there's a lot of airports that can take you to a lot of places, there might not be airplanes taking you to cities in Canada in the less populated provinces making it inaccessible.
As a Canadian, I approve of this!

@@jaiden2458 As I was typing out a response to this, I realized you’re kinda right. A better system might be to select particular cities, and a smaller number, rather than doing the top fifty. Another way to improve it could be to add certain actions teams could take while on the road. I’m sure there are more issues with this - it’s just a basic concept.

Every other game I've rooted for Ben and Adam-- but something about the way Sam and Toby are as a team makes me really on their side here!! This is the first time Sam has had a fully cooperative partner with no snark and the difference is really staggering because he comes off much better. Go Sam and Toby!

man i think this has been my favourite series of jet lag so far, having set locations allows for a very surprising amount of diversity in challenges and outcomes. i never would have thought that there was this much random stuff going on in rural new zealand. i think the game itself is probably less engaging but i think that will change as we get closer to the end.
These upload times are tremendous! After a long day at my internship I can finally relax watching these episodes.

Lol the roadblock was placed just down the road from where I grew up. That other road has a place to buy a hat like 5 min up the road. It was actually a pretty good spot

Roadblocks are OP. What's to stop a team of just using all their points to lay down like 10 roadblocks in a row for the other team? Perhaps it can be fine tuned by saying that only 1 can be out at any one time or that it has to be used immediately when drawn.
They probably are the strongest powerup. That being said, there is generally no way to get a significant amount of coins *and* be in the lead(you can only put roadblocks while ahead). Getting coins tends to put you behind. Also, if you can't put too much of a stack in places where opp can take an alternative route.

@@cooledcannon Sam has like 100+ coins and that was without much rationing too though. You can't take an alternative route if the opposing team using the roadblocks wait for you to be on the same route behind them before tossing them out - no escape for the victims.

I cannot keep commenting to say that this level of meticulous and calculated game design in a gameshow is SO rare and its truly what makes everything genuinely tense and close, as opposed to when some TV shows edit stuff with dramatic music to seem like the teams are close but are actually hours apart. Well done! Every season is better than the last!!
