Sam actually got drunk multiple times, once during tag accross Europe as part of a challenge("commit an american crime"), once in Singapore as part of a challenge in season 2 ("get drunk on a local liquor") .
I'd love to see a version of this with 3 person teams, 2 on the ground and 1 "operator". The ones on the ground are disallowed access to the tracking software and internet (still would have a phone for other functionality), requiring they go through the operator for such information. Each team can pay to curse the other team's operator making them have to do things like go radio silent for X minutes, give incorrect information for X minutes, singing instead of talking for X minutes, etc. with the other ground team not being allowed to know about the curse til it ends (obviously they can guess it in some cases).

Yea they mention in the nebula podcast that the others realise somewhat early on that it’s rude to talk on the trains so they try to stop doing it. But Scotty has been to Japan before and knows the customs so that’s why he does it from the start

@@jimmy50908There are posters and stickers, signage on the stations and inside the train itself at eye-level saying no talking on phones inside trains. It uses a symbol of a phone with a slash mark.

It also wouldn’t even have been useful for Ben either since it veers off to the east instead of going south.
the fact that Japanese rail ways are owned by different companies and yet they run as expected, the transition is easy and they dont literally crash into each other in an hourly basis is such a miracle. that will never happen in the US i think
@@AllTheArtsyThe two companies run on completely different tracks. They don't share the same rail system. At stations where you can transfer from TM to JR are like two stations attached together, but with a different set of tracks leading into them
It's hilarious that Sam and Scotty are just doing their thing pretty calmly but Ben and Adam are always so serious and act like they're in Mission Impossible or Oceans 11.
At the end they weren't so calm as at the start
I don't know if it's just this season, but for me it seems like in past seasons Sam has been more serious but Ben and Adam have more fun even if it is a detriment

I’m not sure how to feel about Scotty. No spoilers, but he learns a big lesson next episode so I’m hoping that changes the way he plays

Seems like this ruleset allows for a lot of back and forth play, so it's going to be very interesting when the play area expands
scotty, or strange parts, has done lots of videos in other countries before. he has definitely traveled to japan, especially china and several other countries to do tech reviews.
I love the fundamental idea of the vending machines; it's both mundanely convenient and endearingly Japanese. Also, I love the way they coordinated as Team Colorado and Team Mario Brothers. Also, I love the new music this season. Also, I love that there's another bird-themed challenge, as usual. Also, I love how nobody can read Japanese. Also, I love the sentence "Scotty's on the monorail." Apparently I love a lot of things about this.
Ben and Adam as Mario and Luigi is such a nice touch, this season is gonna be great!

Sam's shitty luck when it comes to challenges? Check.
I tried translating the card using Google Translate's drawing feature. It took me, someone with absolutely no experience with or knowledge of Japanese, about 15 minutes to translate it. At one point, I mis-drew one character and it kept telling me something about a hornworm, so I honestly might've been able to do it even faster if I weren't a terrible artist.
Yeah I tried Google translate draw feature too and pretty sure it says something like touch the nearest tree and say “I am the best translator.” But I know how to write Chinese characters, so knowing some of the correct stroke order probably helped me find the correct characters more easily.

trying to draw-input CJK characters without any prior experience with them is very difficult. you’re definitely not uniquely bad at it haha

By the way, since Hon-Chiba Station and Chiba-Chuo Station are stations of different companies service, so the only way to move between the two stations is to return to Chiba Station once. I think Japanese trains are difficult for even me....

Scotty was on a JR Sotobō Line train, which in fact, was not a limited.
The station Sam mentioned, Chiba-Chuo, is on another line called Keisei line, which happened to be a different railway line just so happens to be running on parallel to the train Scotty had taken.
No matter which train Scotty took, the next stop will always be Chiba.

I'll be honest I wasn't too hot about the idea of Adam and Ben splitting up for the majority of this episode. But having Ben be like a field agent infiltrating enemy territory and Adam being his quy in the chair, is awesome.

I’m going to need a time lapse of the map showing the path of each player after the game is done. All the back and forth would be fun to watch.
That translation challenge was actually pretty easy. Japanese language pack of Google keyboard supports writing input. All ben had to do was write it to the google translate.
I was literally thinking that you should make a game where splitting up the team is a viable strategy, can't wait to see how this will affect the season
as someone who knows japanese + has kinda navigated their way around Tokyo a few times, the fact that Scotty does seem to know their way around is a *huge* advantage. And can Adam technically take the Shinkansen to yokohama? lol
edit: eh taking the limited instead of the local train happens to everyone in a rush. still think Scotty knows his way around better than Ben/Adam though. and judging by the ruleset, actually EVERYONE can take the shinkansen a stop or two lol when it makes sense no?

@@PersonYayyy they probably will in stages 2 and 3 out of necessity. In Tokyo, google maps doesn't default to it for cost + efficiency reasons, but there could be a couple niche scenarios where it would work, mostly to throw the other team off though rather than any real time benefit i'd think.
I don't think this will come into play given where the flags are this round, but the Chuo line rapid/local train, and taking alternate routes w/ the metro/other train providers (which is easy in Tokyo) could provide more fuckery too. tokyo's train system is just so complicated for a lot of fun. though im not familiar enough with it to fully know how many possibilities there may be.
Won't the distance between stops be so long, that they need to save up lots of coins for it? Seems like a risk reward thing, having to stay in place long doing challenges, and also risking the coins being stolen while saving them up.

As somebody who lives in Chiba, very close to the railway line Ben and subsequently Sam+Scotty took towards Chiba station from Tokyo, it bewilders me that there must have been some point of time in the past where I was less than a kilometer away from them and never even knew. Exciting stuff, can't wait to watch the rest!
I'm even more bewildered. My wife and I were in Tokyo for about a week mid-April and my wife saw a poster in the video about a drama "to be released" around when we were in Tokyo. So we were taking some of these same trains not long after them without knowing it.
It sucks because Ben picked a website for translating kanji that cares about stroke order. Google translate has a tool that lets you draw kanji (and doesn't care about stroke order) and he could have done this in like 5 minutes if he had gone that route.
Ben and Adam starting off going "It's all in Japanese!!!" gives me a very good sense of the way this is gonna go 😅
If anyone else is cringing about them calling people on the trains (considered very rude in Japan), good news: they said on reddit that they realized later in the season and stopped.
I was wondering why Scotty kept hanging up on Sam, but he seemed to know Tokyo better than the others so I assumed there must be a cultural thing there 😂

Travel tip:
Adam said he needed to wait 9 minutes to head back south, but that's not entirely correct.
You see, the Ueno-Tokyo line train are less frequent because of its nature being long-distance trains running to Tokyo's neighboring suburb cities.
What he can do, is to immediately head to the Yamanote/Keihin-Tohoku Line southbound platform and take whatever the first train arrives. The frequency is much higher!
Adam needed to go south for some distance. Ueno-Tokyo line is faster than Yamanote/Keihin because there are fewer stops in between.
This is why Ben and Adam should never ever be separated! They are like two adorable sides of the same coin.

30:47 Somewhat important correction: no matter which train Scotty gets on in Hon Chiba (even if it’s a local, not a limited), he would never be able to stop at Chiba Chuo because they are on two completely different lines, under completely different railway companies!
Hon Chiba is a JR station. Chiba Chuo is a Keisei station. The reason it’s confusing on a map is because the JR line and Keisei line are physically parallel to each other on the map, so they almost look like the same line, but actually have completely different stops. Yay Japan!

I was strangely a bit anxious with all these challenges and running around, because it doesn't really fit well in Japan to be all that excited and showing off when you're a foreigner.
And you should care about that because?
As someone who lived in the Tokyo area for almost two years, I will say that knowing which stops are express stops will change your life when you are trying to make it around places.
Though I can say that a ten second check on google maps would have told Scott that the trains from Hon-Chiba don't stop at Chiba Chuo.
And the trains at Chiba Chuo wouldn't get Ben out of enemy territory unless he went back towards Tokyo.
So pumped about being in Japan. Absolutely love visiting the country and the transit system is just awesome.
Not too confusing if you didn't have to rush.
Jet Lag is just one of those things you watch for like 5 hours to finish a series non stop becasue how good it is

I know the new season literally just started (and it’s great by the way) but I just got an idea that could be fun. What if in a future season you race to see who can visit the most tourist attractions in the world in a set period of time? Once someone visits something though it’s off limits. Also, I’m talking specifically about the major attractions, things like the Eiffel Tower and Colosseum of Rome. I realize international travel is expensive so I don’t know if it’s in the budget to do or not. If not though you could totally do a scaled down version or even give each person a budget and if they spend that to go to one place or five, that’s all they get.

There could also be a few tiers, where you have to claim 3 of the previous tier in a country (worth less) to get higher tiers. Claiming the highest one of a continent would lock the rest of it from both teams.

I’ve been to Japan, and seeing them being in places I’ve been is pretty cool, but Ben butchering the Yamanote line was hilarious for me. Tamachi is the station I stayed near.
This season is breaking. New. Ground. Sam drunk instead of Ben? Amazing. The quality content we've all been asking for
Sam has had liquor before, in Tag Across Europe when the challenge was to break an American law (having alcohol in public). So perhaps the rule is that Ben gets hammered, but Sam has a reasonable amount to drink sometimes.

New series idea: NYC version since NYC now has water ferries and convoluted subways. There are also so many hidey spots since tracking signals disappear. So you have to look extra hard for people underground.
I think the HAI staff all live in NYC, so it wouldn't have the same element of having to figure out the system. Not necessarily a bad thing.
Man its such a great feeling to wake up on a Wednesday morning and see a new jet lag season. Yall are so entertaining and I'm really glad yall keep this series up.
Man this season is INTENSE! I think the dynamic in this game is really well done, especially the game of chicken with ben! Man i could feel the tension throughout the whole thing, it was exciting.

As a seasoned tourist in Japan, it's really funny to see you guys get confused by the Tokyo train system. You really need a few days to acclimatise over there 😅.

Why: Ben lost his phone, resulting in inability to tag and inability to communicate with Adam

ok i have a question,
if the rule is that they need to pay to travel while inside the enemy territory, and they used most of Sams budget to reach the point where they failed the challenge, shouldnt they had to expend Scotty's budget on the way back to their zone? meaning they should not have any money to go pass the neutral zone?
also what is Adam's current budget? i asume he wasted some of it on that early detour.

I would be happy to see something about navigating through mountains without an electronic map (Switzerland with only printed maps or example).
And definitely a zombie tag. Zombies can use transport but cannot run on feet, humans can run but can't use transport. Human tagged becomes a zombie. Zombies try to surround/exhaust humans and convert them all. There is no winner in this game, but it's the process which is fun.

First episode and I can already tell this is going to be a great season. Between the language barrier causing mistakes and chases being much more tense because of the camera-tag/safe zone rules, it’s going to be a tense game.
This show is giving me flashbacks to the first time I accidentally got on an “Express” Tokyo metro train rather than a “local” and ended up lost in Yokohama when my hotel was in Ikebukuro. Nothing like being lost on the subway for 2 hours after a 15 hour flight….
I'm so excited that yall are in my home country. I can't wait to see how far into tohoku ( northern part of honshu) region yall are able to explore as it's such a beautiful region that doesn't get a lot of tourism compared to Tokyo/western Japan

as a person sturying japanese, there's a function in google translator that allows you to draw in Japanese in full sentences so you don't lose the meaning by translating each and every symbol separately
