  • To show you how to make the most of your Shinkansen tickets, I will be traveling between Tokyo and Hiroshima. I will also stop in Kyoto and Osaka. After watching this video, you will be more familiar with Shinkansen tickets.
    There is an important rule that I didn't explain in the video.
    *No stopovers are allowed on a basic fare ticket up to 100 km

    6:36 The rules are changing! Starting December 28, during peak travel periods you can no longer ride Nozomi with a non-reserved ticket. You _must_ have a reserved seat ticket. The peak travel periods are:
    - around New Year’s
    - Golden Week
    - around Obon

    • @Silvrstarr
      @Silvrstarr 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      With the 12-day return ticket that was used in this video, you can(as per STJ's suggestion), stay in Kyoto for a few days, then move off to Hiroshima and maybe stay a day or three there, then start making your way back to Tokyo, maybe also staying a day or three in in Osaka on the way. You can enjoy the famous places without giving in to the 50,000yen JR Pass. Taking the Nozomi as he did in this video also cuts down a fair bit of travel time compared to Hikari/Kodama trains.
      Only downside I see here is the possible need to plan ahead for those non-reserved cars, especially during peak travel periods.

    • @munbok
      @munbok 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Silvrstarr Yup, that's what I have been doing. I would recommend the regional passes as well eg. the JR East pass. STJ's day trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima and back within the same day is an amazing (and exhausting) feat.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Silvrstarr Up till now, I have been able to make the JR Pass work for me. On my last trip, due to an emerging health issue, I had no "power" left in my body, had issues walking decent distances or standing up for long periods. But I had a JR pass and had spread out where I was staying in the country. In those 3 weeks, I did more than 5000km by Shinkansen. But that was a one-time thing. I'm really considering going without next year and will have to do some math to see what will be more expensive.
      The fact that you can use it on more local JR lines is a nice bonus. However, things like the Yamanote line or the Osaka Loop line are nice to have, but often also a detour.

    It's been a little while since I've watched videos from this channel. I watched very many earlier this year to prepare for a trip I made to Japan in May, but even now I'm feeling kind of depressed watching videos like these since I'm not sure when I'll be able to make it back there. While I was there, I didn't make it as far as Hiroshima, but I made it as far west as Harima and as far north as Sendai for my own food adventure. It's strange to think that the new JR Pass is going to be more expensive than what I paid for the Green Pass...luckily it seems like there are a lot of work-arounds that can help people get around affordably and effectively.

    First of all, thank you for this amazing and such useful content! I have a question: Because in this case the base-fare ticket covers a very long distance, it has a validity of 11 days (if I'm not mistaken). So, does this mean that if I buy a base-fare ticket to Hiroshima, follow all the rules such as not taking the train backwards, I could for example, buy the limited express ticket to Kyoto , get off and stay there for, let's say, 3 days, visit around, and then buy another limited express ticket to Hiroshima and continue with the trip while using the same base-fare ticket?

  • @KuroRyuu86

    My first trip to japan, i did not buy the JR pass. At the time it was expensive. I actually did it your way which made it cheaper. The JR pass does have its metrits though. 7 days for almost the same price as one. Only difference is your only allowed on certain trains that stop more than the super express. If i go the second time, im still going to skip the JR pass do what you did again.

    😅 other than the Tokyo Ward Area and Hiroshima City Zone, I don't see any other cities mentioned. So, does it just mean that I can't use this ticket for normal JR train travel within the Tokyo Ward Area and within the Hiroshima City Zone only, but I can use it for normal JR train travel in other prefectures enroute from Tokyo to Hiroshima as long as I don't go backwards?

    • @motojojo_

      I believe you have it right. No stops in Tokyo or Hiroshima, and no reverse travel.

    • @parent5446
      @parent5446 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah it means, for example, if you were to get off at Shinagawa rather than Tokyo station, it's going to eat your ticket right then and there (since you've reached your destination of the "Tokyo City Zone"). So you won't be able to further use the ticket to travel within Tokyo.

    • @wanderer649
      @wanderer649 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I don't think you can use the BASE FARE ticket for "normal" travel in other prefectures either. He used his PASMO card to pay in Osaka. It just means you can interrupt your long-distance journey as often as you want. But this video also implies that the BASE FARE doesn't have any specific routing -- as long as you pay the Limited or Super Express surcharges, etc for the individual trains. Hmmm...

    • @nicolette6460
      @nicolette6460 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @motojojo_ @parent5446 @wanderer649 thank you for your replies
      @wanderer649 I watched that part again, he was coming back from Hiroshima to Tokyo, so from Shin Osaka to Osaka was considered reverse (backward) travelling
      Anyway, after thinking about it, I think it may be best not to use this base fare ticket for normal JR train travel because most (if not all) of us will not know if it's forward or backward travel 😅😅😅 I wouldn't want my expensive base fare ticket to reach its end before its time

    Thank you so much, I was considering doing it ticket by ticket, but with my autism, i know now that I'd probably end up having a massive meltdown right there in the train station 😂. Also, it was fun seeing everything from the other side of the train, and that okinomiyaki looked too good, holy nuggets, Batman! Safe travels and lots of love! ❤️🙏🕊

      I believe his first ticket terminated in Kyoto. Then his next one departed from Kyoto. So he could have stayed for a few days before using his next ticket.

    You can get a reserved seat ticket and then sit in the non-reserved seat. I did that switch once when I had a middle seat and the non-reserved car was almost empty.

    I think you need to clarify the benefits and drawbacks of each option versus just giving the prices. thanks for the video.

    Merci encore pour tout et bon trip ;-)

    The question is whether the tickets were cheaper because you bought them separately (Basic Fare and Shinkansen). Or because you split the Shinkansen ticket, Toyko->Kyoto & Kyoto->Hiroshima, Hiroshima->Shin-Osaka, Shin-Osaka->Tokyo? JR-Central & JR-West & JR-East areas.
    I'll hopefully be back in Japan next spring and I'm wondering if it makes a difference on the Tokyo->Kyoto->Tokyo route too.

    Do you actually feed two different tickets into the ticket readers in the station? I've never seen a feed through reader that could handle two at once.

    I’ve tried searching but can’t find definite answer, what is the age range for needing to buy a child ticket?
    Thank you for this video and showing how to actually buy the ticket, even my husband couldn’t explain it to me. I was confused about the base fare+express. 🙏
