  • I'm going to take a one-day cruise on a local ferry from Shimoda to the islands of Tokyo. It's a small ferry but it has First Class Suite onboard (only one).
    I went to Oshima before

    I am amazed that there's a monument to Matthew Perry (and a street named for him!) in Shimota. Japan's opening wasn't exactly voluntary, and Perry is considered as something of a villain in the modern-day U.S. His older brother Oliver (also a Commodore) is still considered a hero for his bravery and tactical prowess in the battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812, in contrast to his brother, though Matthew was celebrated in his day. I'd be interested to know what is written on the monument, and to know the current take in Japan is concerning what happened then.
    The trip was very enjoyable, and it was a beautiful day, despite the rough seas. I wonder if the Azalea makes (or made) longer trips since they have cabins with beds and showers - not likely needed on a day trip.

      Shimoda has the Black Ship festival each year. They actually present him as interesting and historic. This may partially be due to the tourist factor or the military defeat/occupation of ww2, but they actually have been educated to be positive about the rapid modernization. If you go down to Kagoshima, you'll see a monument to the stowaways on western ships(leaving Japan was prohibited) who left to get an education(several future members of the Heisei government were among them) Very similar, they regard their transition from a typical Asian "backwater" to a 1st rate industrial nation with pride.

    It looks like a peaceful and relaxing trip, despite the rough seas. I am fascinated by the variety of ekiben available- it must be hard to choose at times. I hope the bandage isn't covering a bad injury- it's always a pain to injure a finger or your thumb. 🙄 Thanks for taking us along.

    STJ, your homeland is very beautiful. Thank you for showing us the "real" Japan. The suite is surprising... the main suite, bathroom, and of course the extra room ( 🙃 ). I really liked the private deck. The box lunches looked interesting and tasty. Do you eat them cold or at room temperature? I'd have to heat up that pork. You were gifted with great weather (except the windy part). These islands and the sea are so enchanting. I especially liked the accessible seating. It's nice to see the extra effort for various abled people. Thank you again for the wonderful day with you... I hope your finger heals well 😁

      Usually eaten cold, but according to my google search. Some prefectures have been selling ekibens, on which you pull a string. Which starts a chemical reaction under to heat it up. 😺

    God, this countryside is so PRETTY!! I love islands, especially the tall rocky ones. And I love ports. There's something incredibly charming about the small ones, and really impressive and humbling about the scale of the bigger ones.
    Also, the showers are good for freshening up between islands or if you bring a family and the kids get sick/spill stuff on themselves. Maybe this ship used to do a different, longer route? And the double-layer bento looked taasty.

    7:19 So, I'm trying to (slowly) learn Japanese. As you were listing islands, I kept seeing "-ima" and wondered if that meant "island." When I looked it up, I saw that "ima" means "now." I didn't realize I was not noticing the entire wording (shima and jima). So, I was kind of right, and now I don't feel so bad. 😁
    One of the reasons I watch these channels is to learn the language, so it's always educational and fun.

      9:34 I did think ‘he’s going to be hungry’ with just one be to box. I’m guessing it won’t have a buffet, maybe a cafe and vending machines. Here in the uk our vending machines aren’t great. The most interesting one is in the local hospital because it has microwave meals for when the restaurants and cafe are closed. Nothing interesting, often it’s not working either. The microwave works though for staff or anyone else to use. Tho’ in uk hospitals staff will usually rustle up tea & toast for patients and decent visitors. If someone is going to be rude to them, then they can go buy some crisps from a machine! Be nice….hey presto drink & food! To really impress staff and give them a break offer to go get drink & toast for patients, visitors or staff themselves.
      As a patient once I couldn’t weight bare, but what I could do was sit in the mini ward kitchen making toast and drinks when they were particularly short staffed. Go around the wards if roughly 6 people, mostly elderly and do the day menu choices for them. For selfish reasons mostly, I was so bored! Go from a busy classroom, trade Union work etc to sitting in bed. Though I did provide entertainment too, in the form or everyone’s physio exercises, bingo (hate that) singing nursery rhymes with a particularly regressed lady with dementia 😢 reading, menus, photocopying for staff …anything to be doing something 😂

    • @lilacscentedfushias1852
      @lilacscentedfushias1852 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ps, the bread the hospital uses isn’t great, it’s not horrible but nothing great. But the smell of it toasting…it always smells delicious! However, I can’t have gluten or yeast. I’m in bed at home and my nostrils are filled with the aroma! 🍞so, if you ever happen to be in a NHS uk hospital look hungry and ask for tea/coffee & toast.
      In case you don’t know, even without travel insurance here they aren’t expensive. Unlike the us we have wards, not fancy hotel style single rooms, it saves money. A little known detail…if you’re going for something minimal, you have a fever, sprains…they won’t bother billing you, it’s not worth the admin that costs more than the treatment. But 🤫 shhh
      If it’s something serious, needing treatment and a stay it’s still reasonable, but hop on a plane home and they aren’t going to send some security people to make someone pay.
      We do have some single patient rooms, usually for patients who are very sick, end of life care or they are going to disturb other patients
