One important thing to remember is to NOT BUMP the MAF Sensor. Do not touch the probes with a brush or fingers or anything else. The tiny needle-like probes are extremely delicate.
I had a Ford F-150 that started jumping and stalling intermittently and after having several mechanics troubleshoot with no success, I found that a mouse had gotten into the air filter and chewed little bits off. The impact of these paper bits bounced off the MAF sensor, damaging it. There was no visible damage to the sensor. After replacing the sensor all was well again. I also inserted a wire screen inside the air intake tube to keep little varmints out.

When I’m going to clean the MAF sensor on my 2003 Escape I just unscrew the two little screws on top of the sensor. It’s easier and take less time than doing all those steps.

Yes, I have another video on quick cleaning the MAF sensor: th-cam.com/video/sE2hSUQf4tU/w-d-xo.html
This video is a more complete one, that includes changing the air filter. The air filter really needs to be checked when cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor. It does no good to have a clean or new MAF sensor if the air filter is dirty. Thanks for watching!

Guess I know where I will be spending a hour or so on a Saturday doing. One quick question - why not clean the inside of the air tube? appears that there is carbon build up?

It's an air intake tube. No carbon involved because it is before combustion. However, dust can be a problem.

Why didn’t we just unscrew the sensor from the top? Why did we have to take apart the whole thing
