I'm proud to say I achieved 200% completion in the original DKCR for Wii. I actually felt that the motion roll worked quite well, but I agree that button mapping is preferred.
I did a DKCR livestream when HD came out and I was using motion controls. If you wanna see someone rage about motion controls you both should check it out 🤣🤣
Haven't played Returns since the launch day, but remember being dissapointed with the motion controls as well. I wasn't going to pick this game up again at launch, but since I'll be replaying the SNES Trilogy when I finish my game room as a treat to myself I decided I should include this as part of the experience.
I will point out that DKC Returns HD's co-op is not ideal as it doesn't have the feature of allowing both Kongs to be able to jump on enemies. In the Wii version, let's say DK jumps on an enemy, Diddy will also be able to jump on the same exact enemy thanks to extra frames that allow both Kongs to do it. In the Switch version, levels like 1-K: Platform Panic are an absolute nightmare in co-op because if either Kong kills an enemy by jumping on it, the other Kong will simply fall to their death. This feature was also not in the 3DS port, but at least in that version of the game it was understandable due to limitations, I feel like it's inexcusable to not have this feature in the Switch port which leads me to believe that DKC Returns HD is a glorified version of the 3DS port of the game. Like come on Nintendo, how hard could it be to implement that?
Im very happy you acknowledged understanding people who hold DKCR as their favourite DKC game. I grew up with this one, and love the tribal, otherworldly aspects of the Tiki Tak Tribe. I dont think they're supposed to be as personable as the Kremlin's. This game has at least 20 more levels than TF, and the enemy variety is incredible. Its such a special game to me, so Im glad you made this video! Cant wait to get the HD version sometime
Otherwordly? You're in their world. They've been there since a long time. Might as well be old gods/demons. Especially with the possession and mind control. Something I noticed though is the Tiki Tong Tower reminds me of Exor from Mario RPG.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD was amazing on the Nintendo Wii. Motion controls never bother me but I can understand the critique. However, even though I am bit concern why the original Retro studios were not in the credits of this port. I still think this was a good port of the original Wii video game! At least Donkey Kong Country fans unlike Wario Land fans and Star Fox fans got a new video game! Amazing video Justintendo! Keep it up man! What is your favorite Wario Land game and Star Fox game?
I liked your analogy to a restaurant with good food and no atmosphere. Presentation is important and if the presentation doesn't appeal to you, you won't enjoy it as much. This doesn't mean it's bad. So you really hit the proverbial nail on the head. I think also our tastes change as we get older, I'm currently replaying DKC2 and I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm a much different person at 37 than I was at 17. I look forward to the new tier list and DKC3 being your favorite S Tier game ::cough, cough::
When we finally get a refined version of Donkey Kong Country Returns, it's sad that nobody is satisfied with what we get because of one or more small problems in the game that they have the audacity to make it a huge problem to gain a following. I'm truly happy that we have Donkey Kong Country Returns HD running with proper controls that can now join alongside with DKC Tropical Freeze.
Game is very good. Definitely not as good as tropical freeze but I didn’t expect it to be. For me, the music was a big let down. No memorable tracks for me. I was off Nintendo during the wii days so I was excited to pick it up. Not disappointed at all.
I am sure you heard rants against World 4 and the Rocket and Minecart levels afterward but I feel it important rlto explain my opinion. Although I felt great pain trying to beat them with the puzzle pieces and KONG letters collected, that doesn't change the fact I love Returns HD. See, those level HURT but I refused to give up, even dreading getting a Game Over several times... beating them felt SO GOOD! Basically Returns HD wad made for someone like me who missed out on past ports but refused to rely on emulators or searching for old consoles. Having beat the main story recently I can confidently say I love this game. The Tiki Tak Tribe, like the Snowmads, are pretty cool villains in hindsight and almost every level was exciting in aome way...even the aforementioned pain inducing stages. Sorry for the long tangent. I just wanted to find a fellow DK fan to finally share this with.
Love this video it’s exactly what I have been feeling playing through this game again. I haven’t played it since it was released on the Wii and it feels like a completely new game since I don’t remember much of it and I can play it on the go on my Switch lite. It’s well worth the price in my opinion and I’m just happy to see DK getting so much love finally.
Apeology. I see what you did there. I can't unsee it now lol 2:12. Let's be real though, great game, okay port. Price is too much for the normal brokie. You should do a tier list with the GBA games too.
3:19 Yes! The console itself is part of the fun for me, the menus and booting up the console make the experience feel more magical and special than just running on a window on a computer (similarly to your restaurant analogy!) (and also not everyone can afford PCs that can run Wii games 😅).
I understand why there is stigma around these HD ports but they exist for a reason. I’ve personally never played DKCR so now I get to experience it for the first time. Games don’t always have to target everyone, and in this case people like me will find more value in a game like this than someone that already played in either on Wii or 3DS. And that’s ok! (Side note, I’m really enjoying the game so far! Even if I suck at it haha)
Mentioned this on another one of your videos but I’m so thankful all the Wii games are coming out remastered. I skipped several generations just on motion controls. A game can be engaging without it having to be motion based
IDK man, I never really minded the motion controls on the original. I agree it shouldn't have been forced, but they always felt consistent and when I messed up it was because I, the player, messed up. Maybe your wii remote was just getting old?
Justintentendo thanks for the great Donkey Kong videos that you have been doing! I really enjoy your style of talking/narrating through your videos and i find the content very interesting! Also i have just found another channel that you might like called Kong Kompendium. He brings up a very interesting point for the Wii version of Donkey Kong country returns that it exclusively allows during multiplayer that both characters can jump on the same enemy to avoid death during multiplayer platforming and it was removed for some unfortunate reason on both the 3DS and HD versions but for single player i agree the Donkey Kong country Returns HD is the definitive version to play this game!
Having not bought the HD remake yet, I currently rank it as #4 for myself. However, my friend and I hysterically learning about the tar mechanic was one of the funniest and most enjoyable memories of any video game I have.
I'm with you, I thought the original game was "Fine" but not a game I really wanted to replay, precisely because of the motion controls. I still think the SNES games are my favorites, but I could now see DKCR HD being a game I can play yearly, or more. It's a shame it's getting so much negative press because of the price point and a few little nitpicky things. I admit the co-op thing needs fixing, but I really think this is the best version of the game you could play and new players should not be dissuaded from playing it.
Overall, I think this port is not as bad as they want to make it out to be honestly, I mean yes, the port has its flaws but they are such minor and stupid flaws that you won't even notice them, I understand the loading times being soo much longer than the wii version and the fact that the sync between Donkey Kong and Diddy is broken in multiplayer like the 3DS version, but they are such minor and stupid details that you won't even notice them like the graphics section, many people complain about the graphics but I really don't, in fact I like the graphics of this version more than the original, the original didn't look bad don't get me wrong but it was limited by the technology of its time And it's not like Sonic Colors Ultimate or Lollipop Chainsaw Re-Pop where they ruined the art style of the original game, no, i think they improved it to make it look like the boxart, also the graphic details are something imperceptible that if you played the original game before you won't i been notice it or at least not much besides idk, donkey's fur?, and this is the saddest part, people give so much importance to these tiny details that they detract from everything else that the port has done, cuz let me tell ya, i really like to play dk country without the stupid an annoying motion controls anymore in a official way without playing on an emulator or the 3ds, now you can choose how to play the game, I also understand the price for a Wii game that came out 15 years ago, i mean why 60$?, but I really don't understand why the people complain about the quality of the port, it isn't that bad i seen worse ports than this, i understand the loading times in the time trials, but sometimes I think that people are blinded by nostalgia and believe that the original was better because of pure NOSTALGIA when they don't even realize that the OG game has flaws that emulators like dolphin had to solve, and not the official company that made these games Cuz something that i always hated about that wii is that you can't play with normal controls with some platform game that demands accuracy like sonic and the secret rings for example, just because they wanted to use the new gimmick of time instead of making a good and responding game, and that's because i hate the wii, it has soo many flaws, and soo many bullshit as a console and that's my unpopular opinion about this console, for me it sucks and will always suck in soo many aspects, but if you like it more power to you, i just don't like the wii that much and i think it's not that great as many people they want to make it out to be
Game doesn't need an apology lol Original developers of DKCR who didn't get credits need an apology Co-op mode players getting a broken experience need an apology
@@maverickhuntermeta4954 Two players can no longer bounce off the same enemy, which is crucial for co-op in many levels. The original developers names are nowhere mentioned in the credits.
The game has a massive issue and that’s because of the multiplayer and the fact that your interactive platforms disappear after one character uses them so the second player does no matter what. So it gets a 5 out of 10 until they fix this. They ported the 3ds version.
This was one of my favorite games on 3DS back in college, I used to play it all the time between classes. Now I'm enjoying it even more in HD. I felt the same way you did about the Wii version, it was unplayable lol
Well thing is, the og red-ish look that the Wii had hasn’t really aged well. Now the current fur that tropical freeze has is probably the definitive fur. It has great detail and has great lighting as well. Now if you watch GameXplain’s video regarding the fur, you can see that the fur in an earlier build was supposed to be more accurate towards DKC tropical freeze. Then it got changed for some reason and now it looks too dark. I love the game but I’m just not a fan of the new dark fur. It’s just my opinion though.
Hopefully, with Nintendo and Microsoft partnering for the NS2, Rare can come back and give us a proper DKC game. Proper platforming with minimal gimicks.
@10:00 well the price shouldn't be a issue for some. Thats why there's GameStops. They can trade in old games and hardware they don't want to bring the prices down a bit. And another reason why, despite what some say, physical media needs to stay around. Other then collection value it Also has trade value. You can lower your own price in some situations
here's my issue with the price point discussion. I feel like Nintendo or someone needs to release like a short video showing the work and effort that goes into upgrading the graphics on a game like this. i don't know the details, but i know it's a little more complicated that just clicking a button. the original game was built with the limitations of the Wii. i feel like if people could see the work and time put into upgrading it for a modern console, they'd be able to drop the whole argument. you could still say 'i'm not paying $60 for a game i paid for already at full price?', and to which i'd say 'ok, that's perfectly fine, you literally don't have to. but this is an option for people who didn't grow up with a Wii and might enjoy this game too.' it takes time to do this upgraded versions of games the right way, and unfortunately that costs money, and it doesn't always mean the game has new content you didn't have before, it's just the visuals, but that's ok if that's what you want
problem is it wasnt done the right way, when there are missing textures that were present in both the wii and 3ds, how is it an upgrade. The wii had realistic shadows during cutscenes while the switch does not. And recently people found an issue in coop, there was this feature which allowed both players to bounce of the same enemy if they did it close enough to each other. But now if the 1st player bounces of an enemy, it instantly dissapears and 2nd player falls through, making certain levels where you have to pass gaps by bouncing on an enemies unplayable in coop. There would be a lot less people bringing up the price, if it was actually a good port.
I was pricing Wii copies for awhile so I could play it on original hardware. But halfway through the adventure on Switch (most KONGs and “Jiggies” included), I cannot possibly imagine having to fling my hands about while playing. Nope, nope. No thank you, Nintendo. 😂 Another reason I’m grateful for DKCR HD. Glad I made the purchase.
This is how I felt about Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. Got gaslit over the years thinking it was a bad game and when I originally played it on the 3DS I wasn't enjoying my time with the controls. I always liked DKCR but Tropical Freeze finally clicked for me and I also got the "I get it" thing which is good because I felt like I was missing out with how much praise it used to get. I think I just had some kinda biased against DKC. Not the first game, I like the first game fine, I guess I think DKC 2 is a bit overated. Maybe one day it will click for me as well.
I am at fault for skipping out on motion controls based games on the WII myself because I never was a fan of it. I never had any fun with a game while being forced to play it a certain way. Now with that rant out of the way, I do want to add that DKC Returns was great.
I also agree that in the Wii version of Donkey Kong country Returns that the mandatory motion controls were awful! It definitely should have been optional!
Hearing you complaining about motion controls make me think "Thanks to my poverty I didn't played this game on Wii" 😂 on the 3DS the experience was really nice! Thats why I'll keep this game on the radar and I'll get it sooner or later !
More Returns content AND MORE TIKI TAK APPRECIATION!!! As I said last time, I've been playing Returns HD nonstop. You've inspired me to maybe make a video essay of my own on Returns from the perspective of someone who has never played the originals to maybe throw out some opinions with a fresh set of eyes. I'm a person who prefers motion controls because the Wii was my first console and I played it obsessively and for me, motion controls were just how things were. Also, there's something super satisfying about pounding the ground in game while shaking the controller. I've only played Returns and Tropical Freeze, and while Tropical Freeze is definitely a much better gaming experience, I will always have nostalgia bias towards Returns (and I just love the tikis so much) Really glad to see you've given it some thought and really glad to see some positivity for a game that I've seen so much negativity towards!
I'd start with Returns. Tropical Freeze really feels like the next step in terms of evolved levels and gameplay, and you'll appreciate it much more if you play through them in order.
I have a critique of the 3ds port. Not enough control styles. You get two options, one with the control stick and one with the d-pad. My issue with this is that the control pad on the 3ds isnt great and i prefer playing 2d platformers with a d-pad anyway so obviously i wanted to use d-pad controls. Heres my issue though, they swapped roll from Y to L/R which was an AWFUL decision. I dont know why changing what you use to move had to change the fucking button controls too. Its still my preferred way to play the game (still dont own the switch port) but holy crap i would LOVE to play it with d-pad and standard button controls.
I only had the 3DS version prior to last week, I didn't LOVE this game's diffculty, it felt unpleasant and to demandind in a lot of ways, so much that I called in Super Kong so much - especially in Minecart and Rocket Barell levels - to beat those levels for me, and I never went for the Orbs for World 9, but now that I got DKCRHD, I actually started to appreciate this game more, never used Super Kong Guide, and i 100%ed it since 2 days ago. this game was much better then i remembered
you can argue the pricetag is too high, but to me the game itself is fantastic, pure fun and creative gameplay… having a lot more fun playing DKCR the 3rd time (after Wii and 3Ds) than i had with Epic Micky, Astrobot etc (those looked nice, but gameplay / gamedesign was so boring and simple)
I own the WIi and 3ds Donkey Kong Country Returns games. I still play and enjoy the 3ds version. I have pro controller for the Wii and it should play without motion control. But it was Nintendo being Nintendo. Gimmick sellers since the beginning. I will get a switch when it's last generation and is 100 dollars after the switch 2 arrives . I'm positive a new lite version is going to be 100 dollars with game built in digitally.
I understand, remastering games is not a easy thing for developers to do, I have a question about Mario Kart 9 on Switch 2, what's your opinion on Donkey Kong's design being shown in the Switch 2's first look trailer?
People say the bosses are bad and the bonus rooms are terrible, but that it's a great game, which I find strange. It's like when people say Breath of the WIld is amazing, but the dungeons are poor; for me if one key part is bad, you can't say they're great games.
My first experience with this game was with emulation. I never had to deal with the waggle controls, so I never had to deal with that issue. I really want to get this one for the Switch, but I almost exclusively play co-op. I need Nintendo to fix the co-op mechanics (specifically jumping on enemies not instantly removing them) before I'll even consider getting it.
@@TheJustintendo I'm just tired of people's constant moaning during and long after motion controls. Weak sauce wrists. I could do motion controls just fine and had at blast at age 8 playing Wii sports, Rayman rabbid rabbits and skyward sword, it was immersive/fun ASF but here y'all whining 24/7 over it it's honestly hilarious
@@Giggles_iJest Actually a lot of people have not only wrist problems but arthritis that can make the bones in your hands hurt when you swing them even gently. It's also not as precise as a button press, but as someone who was never bothered by the motion controls (but is beginning to have hand problems) I understand where they're coming from, as they can't enjoy one of the best games ever made because of just this.
1:39 I only beat it because all of you degenerate Donkey Kong fans siguen jodiendo that I play it again just because Something “big” that you all seem to think is coming.
Its about time you apologized...you previous comments on DKC Returns are deplorable. Idk how you pretend to be a Nintendo channel and disparage their IP. But at least it looks like you're learning.

And it's not like Sonic Colors Ultimate or Lollipop Chainsaw Re-Pop where they ruined the art style of the original game, no, i think they improved it to make it look like the boxart, also the graphic details are something imperceptible that if you played the original game before you won't i been notice it or at least not much besides idk, donkey's fur?, and this is the saddest part, people give so much importance to these tiny details that they detract from everything else that the port has done, cuz let me tell ya, i really like to play dk country without the stupid an annoying motion controls anymore in a official way without playing on an emulator or the 3ds, now you can choose how to play the game, I also understand the price for a Wii game that came out 15 years ago, i mean why 60$?, but I really don't understand why the people complain about the quality of the port, it isn't that bad i seen worse ports than this, i understand the loading times in the time trials, but sometimes I think that people are blinded by nostalgia and believe that the original was better because of pure NOSTALGIA when they don't even realize that the OG game has flaws that emulators like dolphin had to solve, and not the official company that made these games
Cuz something that i always hated about that wii is that you can't play with normal controls with some platform game that demands accuracy like sonic and the secret rings for example, just because they wanted to use the new gimmick of time instead of making a good and responding game, and that's because i hate the wii, it has soo many flaws, and soo many bullshit as a console and that's my unpopular opinion about this console, for me it sucks and will always suck in soo many aspects, but if you like it more power to you, i just don't like the wii that much and i think it's not that great as many people they want to make it out to be
Game doesn't need an apology lol
Original developers of DKCR who didn't get credits need an apology
Co-op mode players getting a broken experience need an apology
Real
Elaborate.
@@maverickhuntermeta4954 Two players can no longer bounce off the same enemy, which is crucial for co-op in many levels. The original developers names are nowhere mentioned in the credits.
“Apeology”…I see what you did there
😂😭
The game has a massive issue and that’s because of the multiplayer and the fact that your interactive platforms disappear after one character uses them so the second player does no matter what. So it gets a 5 out of 10 until they fix this. They ported the 3ds version.
This was one of my favorite games on 3DS back in college, I used to play it all the time between classes. Now I'm enjoying it even more in HD. I felt the same way you did about the Wii version, it was unplayable lol
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I still think his fur looks bad. It’s too dark. I don’t understand why the fur can’t look like every other DK Country game.
I love how dark it looks. I hated the red-ish tint he had in the OG DKCR
Agreed🙏🏻🙌🏻
Not happening. Most of the original staff at Rareware left the company when Microsoft bought them out.
Totally agree. I am absolutely LOVING this game.
YESSS 🙌🏻
@10:00 well the price shouldn't be a issue for some. Thats why there's GameStops. They can trade in old games and hardware they don't want to bring the prices down a bit.
And another reason why, despite what some say, physical media needs to stay around. Other then collection value it Also has trade value. You can lower your own price in some situations
Justintendo returns
😈😈
DKCR is still ahead of its time.
Agreed🙌🏻
I’ve just bought it
Thinking of marathoning the series 🤟🏻
HECK YES!! Do it!!
Just played through Tropical Freeze and Returns and 100% both (not 200% yet). Thought I was going to get burned out but I didn't.
here's my issue with the price point discussion. I feel like Nintendo or someone needs to release like a short video showing the work and effort that goes into upgrading the graphics on a game like this. i don't know the details, but i know it's a little more complicated that just clicking a button. the original game was built with the limitations of the Wii. i feel like if people could see the work and time put into upgrading it for a modern console, they'd be able to drop the whole argument. you could still say 'i'm not paying $60 for a game i paid for already at full price?', and to which i'd say 'ok, that's perfectly fine, you literally don't have to. but this is an option for people who didn't grow up with a Wii and might enjoy this game too.'
it takes time to do this upgraded versions of games the right way, and unfortunately that costs money, and it doesn't always mean the game has new content you didn't have before, it's just the visuals, but that's ok if that's what you want
problem is it wasnt done the right way, when there are missing textures that were present in both the wii and 3ds, how is it an upgrade.
YES! I am grateful every day for DKCRHD! Be gone with those disgusting motion controls!
Completely fair!! I hope more people give both Luigi's Mansion 2 HD AND Returns HD a fair shot
YES! THANK YOU! I have nothing wrong with having motion controls, but come on, making them mandatory is such a stupid decision.
Hearing you complaining about motion controls make me think "Thanks to my poverty I didn't played this game on Wii" 😂 on the 3DS the experience was really nice! Thats why I'll keep this game on the radar and I'll get it sooner or later !
The 3DS version is definitely better than the Wii version imo
I first I thought it was a typo then I realized the pun it was meant to be. 😅
HAHA!
I've only played Returns and Tropical Freeze, and while Tropical Freeze is definitely a much better gaming experience, I will always have nostalgia bias towards Returns (and I just love the tikis so much)
Really glad to see you've given it some thought and really glad to see some positivity for a game that I've seen so much negativity towards!
Thank you so much for this comment, and I am so happy too! I love the game, AND the Tiki's!
my fav DK games are DKCTF, DKC1, DKC2, and Returns. The swordshark was my fav animal buddy so its a shame they didnt bring him back for Returns and TF
I wanted to get into the DKC series. Should I start with Returns HD or should i skip to Tropical Freeze?
Completely fair. More options are ALWAYS a good thing
🙌🏻🙌🏻
you can argue the pricetag is too high, but to me the game itself is fantastic, pure fun and creative gameplay… having a lot more fun playing DKCR the 3rd time (after Wii and 3Ds) than i had with Epic Micky, Astrobot etc (those looked nice, but gameplay / gamedesign was so boring and simple)
Completely agree!
OHHHHH I GET IT
I was gonna say you spelt it wrong but it was purposeful lol
😭💀
I understand, remastering games is not a easy thing for developers to do, I have a question about Mario Kart 9 on Switch 2, what's your opinion on Donkey Kong's design being shown in the Switch 2's first look trailer?
I agree, and I have an entire video talking about DK's new design! :) In short: I really like it
@@TheJustintendo I just realized about that, sorry for the late reply.
People say the bosses are bad and the bonus rooms are terrible, but that it's a great game, which I find strange.
It's like when people say Breath of the WIld is amazing, but the dungeons are poor;
for me if one key part is bad, you can't say they're great games.
Fair enough!
I kinda know what you mean. Didn't care to much for DK jungle beat on GameCube. Played it again on wii and thought it was brilliant.
I hate the wii for the motion controls. Every game they port is better just by default.
Donkey kong country returns, nah
This world rn feel like
Donald Trumps country returns
This is a really stupid joke but it made me laugh really hard
OMG 😂😂😂
Agreed. Finished this at 100% and then jumped to Tropical Freeze and was truly surprised how much more I enjoyed Returns.
🙌🏻🙌🏻
The Game's great without the motion Controls
Agreed!
I never had an issue with the original motion controls. Its nice that it's no longer needed, but it didn't bother me that much.
Fair!
Motion controls were fine never bothered me in skyward sword too I like them.
That's great! To each their own
Shouldn't the title say "Apology"??
It's a play on words😂
Ape, like a Monkey.
*we get it* you have weak wrists and can't handle motion controls, can't handle a simple swing
You're fun!
Well at the very least make them optional, control schemes like that should not be forced!
Goooood😈😈
Siguen Jodiendo?
Excellent game on dolphin. No fur on donkey Kong but you get a more consistent frame rate
Its about time you apologized...you previous comments on DKC Returns are deplorable. Idk how you pretend to be a Nintendo channel and disparage their IP. But at least it looks like you're learning.
