I want this, but for Wooly world. Seeing mu custom Yoshi’s in HD would be great. It could have more amiibo support, meaning Joker, and Banjo Yoshi could be real.
dkc returns was one of the wii titles that got ported to the nvidia shield in china, which uses the same tegra x1 chip as the switch, so this seems like a fairly easy port, just add the new levels from the 3ds version and you finally have a version of dkc returns with button controls and it runs at 60fps
yeah as a big fan of retro's dk games (better than their Metroid games don't @ me) I really would have loved if they added Dixie, cranky, and funky to this game at least. it really feels like nothing has been done to this game
No, the Shield uses Android. The chip isn't the only thing that needs to be considered when doing a port. And it still got a ton of graphical effects missing or wrongly rendered, which need to be fixed.
Well, since it isn't finished and has tons of graphical bugs, I prefer them completing the port first, before releasing it and putting it onto cartridges, so it can be complete on the physical. =)
Never had the chance to play it on the Wii, but I remember seeing the advertisements for it on tv and was so excited. Looking forward to finally having my chance on switch.
Funny thing is, this isn't the first time. DK has a long history of getting a few games, then being ignored for a long time, then suddenly getting a few new games. The original arcade games came out, then we just got ports of those arcade games to NES as the "Classics", and only midway through the SNES life cycle did we get the Country games out of nowhere! Three of them, plus the Donkey Kong Land games, and then the N64 got DK64... and then nothing. We got "enhanced" ports of the DKC games on GBA, and that was it outside of emulated ROMs for a good long while, and then Returns, and Tropical Freeze the generation after! So, yeah this fits the pattern. But, I really hope they don't charge full price for this or Luigi's Mansion HD. At the very least, it'll have all the enhancements of the 3DS games, but without the slight downgrade in graphics.
In my mind the main reason they’re doing the rerelease is to due to the upcoming Super Nintendo world expansions in Japan and Florida, as they’re heavily based on the DKCR aesthetic and it would be strange if the game wasn’t available (for cross-promotional purposes)
Donkey Kong is my favorite fictional character, and I can confidently say that I am very excited for this! I’ve always wanted to play that game again with the 3DS controls and on an HD console so I will indeed be picking this up!
DKC Returns is the absolute goat. i grew up with this game along with Galaxy 2, Mario Bros. Wii, and Mario Kart Wii. I also had a ds and other cool ds games. But DKC Returns is the one i was the best at and played the most.
Even though it’s disappointing Nintendo is releasing this game for the THIRD time instead of giving us a new DKC, I’m more inclined to get it for the fact that we get the game with no motion controls, full hd 60 fps, and includes all 3ds levels. Plus it can be played in handheld too.
they should’ve made _”Donkey Kong Country Returns 3: K.Rool’s Kremling Kingdom”_ or something like that… somewhere like 2017-19-ish… and then an HD trilogy collection with all three _Returns_ games a few years later… and then by now we’d be getting a new Donkey Kong sub-franchise, something like a semi-open world 3D platformer, kinda like _Sonic Frontiers,_ but with Donkey Kong… …and then have the Switch 2 launch with a trio of Nintendo’s second and third tier franchises, rather then _Zelda_ and _Mario…_ like _Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong…_ and maybe _F-Zero_ ? or throw in _Star-Fox_ and _Kirby_ ?
I’ll just stick with dolphin for this one personally since the graphics seem to have lost some of the sauce from the Wii version for some apparent reason. Might buy it on sale for convenience though.
I like how this is THE definitive version of the game (3DS levels, button controls, nice graphics and playable on the TV and on the go). I always like the motion controls, but it's nice to have the option. HOWEVER, it IS time for a new game. Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo's best and most important series. He deserves to be in their best selling console. But I get that he's without a developer right now with Retro being busy with Metroid... This is the problem with DK, he is always lacking a developer. In a perfect world, Rare would still be taking care of him to this day.
Man, watching all of this gameplay makes me want to play the game! So instead of waiting until January, I will just play the exact same game right now. lol!
Hyrule Warriors. Though it was a while ago, this isn't the first game from the Wii U, then ported to 3DS and then ported again to the Switch with all previous content.
the best thing about this for me is that it makes it more likely we might get kirbys epic yarn HD and yoshi's woolly world HD also its just good to have an actual definitive version of this game without needing to choose between waggle rolling and the screen being a little too small for how the game was originally visually designed
I also think it’s a nice shot in the arm for DK, considering he’s about to get his own theme park land (AND mine cart ride) at Universal Orlando next year!
@@orangeslash1667 For ten years!? Tropical Freeze was released in 2014. Ten years is MORE than enough time for both Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong. I have heard that Retro Studios is lacking in direction and proper leadership.

It really is crazy that ports with little to no new content are full price. I get the feeling that Nintendo tentatively dipped their toes into the idea, and then when it worked they were like “ok cool, we’re never going below $60US again
I actually, honestly, asked for this because lately I have gotten the urge to want to play this game again, but I don’t feel like bringing out the old new 3DS, and I just want to play it on Switch because I use the Switch all the time and want to just be able to just play it on my convenient system. So yeah, I actually genuinely really wanted this to happen. And the best part, it comes out one day before my birthday! That’s just the icing on the cake for me! 😁
While I do wanna play this game… it is hard to justify $60 for it. Especially after they showed us how much work they were willing to put into Metroid Prime and release it for $40
I'm probably one of the few that doesn't mind re-buying this a 3rd time 😊 . There is something about it that makes me wanna keep revisiting again, it is one of my favorite games and it has an interesting history with me playing it on my Wii (it broke the disc reader while almost reaching the final boss 😅)
The one thing I hope they do and think could truly make this the definitive version of the game (even if still not 60 bones worthy) is allowing us to play as Diddy Kong in mirror/hard mode like in Tropical Freeze with him, Dixie and Cranky. This version of the game is already likely the best way to play it by virtue of 60fps and no forced motion controls (though apparently there's a bunch of minor visual flourishes missing or broken, but we've still got 7 months so I'm sure those'll be fixed), but playable Diddy would make it even better.
Glad for you. I'm a starved fan of many series, video game and otherwise and ports of old games for full price I can already play on stuff I own never does it for me. It's more insulting than anything.
I'm honestly really happy to see Returns on Switch, I think it's the perfect stop gap game before bigger things to come on the Switch 2 (plus I've never played it before, so I can finally play it). It's looks like it's going to be the definitive version of the game too, as both the Wii and 3DS versions have positives and drawbacks to them It's the Return of Return of Returns!
I’m very happy about ports like this, even if the pricing is very silly, because, and say it with me: We don’t just want games on the switch We don’t just want lots of games on the switch We want *allll* the games on the switch
I’m just happy I can play this game whenever I want now. I’ve only ever beaten it once, and I can’t wait to play it again. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I choose to believe Nintendo has a new DK game in the works and Returns HD is to hold us over until it’s ready. If I’m right, I pray it’s a Switch 2 launch title, though that’s probably asking too much. I just want more Donkey Kong; he’s my favourite Nintendo IP!
I will say flat out this is leagues above Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD in terms of HD remasters, because it’s essentially a definitive edition of the game, taking the new levels and quality of life improvements from Returns 3D and putting it on a home console like the original. Beyond that, Luigi’s Mansion is not a series that has been dormant for so long- 3 released in 2019 and after both how well it did and how Next Level Games were bought by Nintendo, you know that means a sequel will hit the Switch successor. DK, meanwhile, hasn’t had a new game since 2018 and even that was a port of Tropical Freeze, so since 2014. So for me, as a big Donkey Kong fan, this is a huge relief to have SOMETHING to hold me over until the next new game. And, having heard through the grapevine this wasn’t supposed to be such a long wait for a new game, that a cancelled Vicarious Visions developed game was in the works, it all gives me hope for a new game pretty early in the lifespan of Switch 2. Like, Nintendo are using DK a lot recently, and I think it’s all to raise brand awareness and really build up a new game. DK in the Mario movie, Mario vs Donkey Kong, the Nintendo World expansion for Donkey Kong, and now this? DK is showing up more and more lately, and I do think it’s to a purpose. And beyond all that, this is exactly what I wanted. Yes, a new game would be cooler, more hype, whatever… but I wanted the series complete on Switch and now I can play DKC 1, 2, 3, Returns, and Tropical Freeze. Plus, it has the 3DS exclusive levels finally on a home console which I was hopeful for. And in general, again, after having nothing for SIX YEARS, this is a relief to have SOMETHING to enjoy. It genuinely feels like a weight has been lifted since the wait is over for ANY news. Like, Zelda fans knew Tears of the Kingdom was a thing at least; every Direct I would get no Donkey Kong news and feel a bit more defeated. Also, one last thing, I think it’s not fair to say “oh, this game is probably done and could have been shadow dropped.” Like, some people have nitpicked this trailer into oblivion because of the tiniest details for missing effects, and I think it’s still a ways off as a result. Like, this was probably a more recently started project to tie in to the Nintendo World expansion since they made it very Returns themed. And while I don’t mind the tiny little details, the fact they exist makes me think that they are still working on porting everything and making everything look just right. Still very happy this exists and have zero issues in this specific case of a full price release because I want this game and it makes me happy and I’m not gonna grumble about anything. Just gonna have this fuel my hope that a new game will be early on for Switch 2 and be happy with this as a stop gap in the meantime.
There was a report about Nintendo working with Vicarious Visions, the developers for the Crash N Sane Trilogy, to make a 3D Donkey Kong platformer a while back. But Activision got in the way of those plans and made them a support studio for Blizzard instead.
The price has already been revealed!! in the Japanese direct that is, the price was in Yen but the conversion said 40 dollars, I know it might not be one to one, but you guys shouldn't asume the worst!!!
Nintendo does re-realise ports/remasters/remakes games, but only if that remaster is old enough, so don't expect LM1 remaster until at least another 5 years
Man, I'd love to see a 3D Donkey Kong action game on the scale of Breath of the Wild. Imagine swing through the jungle with DK like Spider-Man swinging through New York
Yeah. We had a super short resurgence with Odyssey, Hat in Time and the first Yooka but that era did not last anywhere near long enough. Yet there are new 2d platformers every few weeks.
It really is the one flaw of the perfect console cycle basically. Sure people could want /nitpick other franchises but this is the only big franchise where they did the bare minimum which was basically hope people haven’t played these before so they seem kinda new. The optimistic way to look at it is they needed a new gameplay idea and they thought it fit better on switch 2.
I think the reason they're not doing DKC 6 yet is because Metroid Prime 4 originally was going to be Bandai Namco, freeing up Retro to do DKC games, but MP4 had to be started over from the start with Retro Studios, so it was all hands on deck at Retro and they couldn't afford the time and staff to split their resources between DKCR3 and MP4.
I don't know man. DKC outsells Metroid games hugely. I can't imagine business sluts like Nintendo putting aside a lucrative game to focus on another that is not only more expensive to produce, but doesn't buy them golden toilets.
Honestly Donkey Kong Country Returns is the perfect game for a HD remaster. Besides removing the motion controls. It doesn't really need any major quality of life improvements. Although I wish Retro Studios could of done the port, to give it that Metroid Prime Remaster visual overhaul. I think it would of been cool if we could get Dixie, Cranky, and Funky as extra playable characters. But their abilities probably wouldn't fit into the preexisting levels, so I get why they wouldn't do that.
Now that we know 3DS Remakes getting a remaster on switch is a thing that can happen, there's finally hope that we'll get a switch version of oot and majora's mask
I love getting the hits from GameCube / Wii upgraded for HD. $60 is definitely a valid complaint, but I’m still getting it. Hopefully they have big plans for DK on switch 2 when the hardware isn’t as much of a hindrance
I would have sooooo much preferred a Donkey Kong Country Original Trilogy HD Remaster Collection. This would have been some actually great news and a good surprise. The third rendition of the same game doesn’t even get a huge DK fan like me too excited.
thats exactly why its not, people who have played tf know its amazing and a lot of them likely havent played returns. They know its the same format and would want to give it a try
They're both about the same in terms of quality honestly. I think the bias leans towards TF because 1. David Wise, 2. no shitty motion controls, 3. it's the only one on Switch.
@@agreedboarart3188 It's more because Returns just feels generic compared to Tropical Freeze. For instance, the worlds in Returns are just Jungle, Beach, Cliffs, Factory etc and latch far more on the original games Whereas Tropical Freeze has more original themed worlds with cool names like Autumn Heights, Bright Savanah and Juicy Jungle. The enemies are more simple looking Tiki masks and regular animals while The Snowmads are lead by a more menacing Viking fleet of cold climate animals befitting the game's theme. TF also has more playable characters and more natural looking level design that looks like it's all part of the world and not some arbitrary path with themes built around it. This is better shown during opening level camera shots and mine cart levels and barrel canon sections that go off the 2D plane. And sorry but the controls and David Wise are still valid points because the motion controls are gimmicky and inferior and David Wise has composed some of his best works for this game.
I actually like returns better, I think it felt more…. “Jungly” to me. Really lame how the only animal buddy in returns is rambi though since I also played the original trilogy.
I think a big new 3D DK game could be a good launch/first year game for Switch 2, maybe even in the place of a new 3D Mario initially and that would come later in the generation.
I’m pretty sure they’re doing it now for Super Nintendo World cross promotion since the dkc area is based on this game mostly. Japan’s version is scheduled for late this year and Orlando’s is next year.
I would have been much more excited by this remaster had I not just bought a factory-sealed copy of the original for Wii for $30 literally two days before the announcement
Something that is somewhat worrying is that the lighting, shading and visual effects actually look noticibly worse in the new version especially if you compare them side by side, hopefully those get fixed until release but it might not be a good sign...
I'll say this, I'm glad people who never had a Wii/3DS have a chance to play this, but even I was disappointed. I was really hoping for a new reveal. Though if we do get a new one, I'm hoping for a 3D title, but if we got another 2D one, making DKCR a trilogy like the SNES trilogy, that would be cool too.
If the release of this port is an indication of their commitment to a third game, then I’ll be happy with them future proofing the trilogy to be playable on the same console (as long as the switch 2 is backwards compatible)
After the new Zelda game, I was most hyped seeing this one in the Direct. DKC on the SNES was the game that got me into Nintendo. I got back into gaming in 2020, so I was hoping this game would eventually come to the Switch. So I’m glad it will be! And I hope we’ll get a new 2D DKC game on the Switch successor. Or a 3D DK game, I wouldn’t mind that either.

Motion controls are fire
It is kind of wild that what once took an $20,000 Silicon Graphics workstation to pretender is now being done in real time with lots of visual enhancements on a 9-year old mobile chip
And it still got a ton of graphical effects missing or wrongly rendered, which need to be fixed.
this should've just straight up been available on the eshop after the direct
Right?! I got so mad when it said freaking January
They should have made this thing ages ago, really.
@@neonwolf7315 Donkey Kong needs his Christmas cookies before he can Return again
Well, since it isn't finished and has tons of graphical bugs, I prefer them completing the port first, before releasing it and putting it onto cartridges, so it can be complete on the physical. =)
for free
Never had the chance to play it on the Wii, but I remember seeing the advertisements for it on tv and was so excited. Looking forward to finally having my chance on switch.
Probably for the best. The Wii version had mandatory motion controls.
Can't wait for Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze: Re-Slushed for Switch 2.😍
Lol
In my mind the main reason they’re doing the rerelease is to due to the upcoming Super Nintendo world expansions in Japan and Florida, as they’re heavily based on the DKCR aesthetic and it would be strange if the game wasn’t available (for cross-promotional purposes)
Donkey Kong Country Returns Returns

Donkey Kong Country Re-re-returns
Donkey Kong Country Re-Re-Returns.
they should’ve made _”Donkey Kong Country Returns 3: K.Rool’s Kremling Kingdom”_ or something like that… somewhere like 2017-19-ish… and then an HD trilogy collection with all three _Returns_ games a few years later…
and then by now we’d be getting a new Donkey Kong sub-franchise, something like a semi-open world 3D platformer, kinda like _Sonic Frontiers,_ but with Donkey Kong…
…and then have the Switch 2 launch with a trio of Nintendo’s second and third tier franchises, rather then _Zelda_ and _Mario…_ like _Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong…_ and maybe _F-Zero_ ? or throw in _Star-Fox_ and _Kirby_ ?
You did not just say the subtitle for the next game should be KKK. Call me crazy, but I don't think that's the best idea lol
@@BoopsAndBeeps - 😂
2017, 2022, and 2025 are all looking like the best years of the Switch.
Donkey kong Country is one my favorite series. I hope we get a new game on the switch 2
Yeah I hope so also
I’ll just stick with dolphin for this one personally since the graphics seem to have lost some of the sauce from the Wii version for some apparent reason. Might buy it on sale for convenience though.
tbh i’m just happy that there is finally a definitive edition of the game
This game is what we call a "light to no remaster"
still pumped that DKC is getting some attention though
So instead of waiting until January, I will just play the exact same game right now. lol!
Enjoy playing this amazing radical platformer which version are you playing?
Also I hope you have a awesome day today daily reminder that you are amazing and you deserve so much kindness and happiness
It truly is a super good game. Donkey Kong Country doesn’t get enough love
Hyrule Warriors. Though it was a while ago, this isn't the first game from the Wii U, then ported to 3DS and then ported again to the Switch with all previous content.
the best thing about this for me is that it makes it more likely we might get kirbys epic yarn HD and yoshi's woolly world HD
also its just good to have an actual definitive version of this game without needing to choose between waggle rolling and the screen being a little too small for how the game was originally visually designed
I also think it’s a nice shot in the arm for DK, considering he’s about to get his own theme park land (AND mine cart ride) at Universal Orlando next year!
And we're yet to see any of those 6 new videos. I hope everything is alright with you and Kane, little buddy!
I really wish this was a NEW Donkey Kong game myself. I already have this one and while it is fun, it is not enough for me to pay twice for.
Retro Studio's is too busy with Metroid right now.
@@orangeslash1667 For ten years!? Tropical Freeze was released in 2014. Ten years is MORE than enough time for both Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong. I have heard that Retro Studios is lacking in direction and proper leadership.
@@orangeslash1667that’s bullshit man. A DK game should have been in development YEARS ago whether by Retro or not
@@ihatestairs9034 It did take a LONG time for Retro to make Metroid Prime 4.
Without Rare, only Retro can make a DKC game, with Nintendo making Mario vs Donkey Kong.
@@orangeslash1667 That’s not true, Nintendo has plenty of studios in the palm of their hands, some of which who have made 2D platformers before who would be perfect for the job. Nintendo have the keys to DK’s success, they just choose not to use them
They finally made the game look like how it does in my memories of when I played it last month
I actually wanted them to port this game but never thought they would 😯
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D HD with Funky Mode
I almost broke my desk out of excitement when I saw DK's house but hey, to each their own I guess
It really is crazy that ports with little to no new content are full price. I get the feeling that Nintendo tentatively dipped their toes into the idea, and then when it worked they were like “ok cool, we’re never going below $60US again
That's exactly what they did and yes it really sucks as the value is crap ...such as the Dark Moon remaster being 60 frickin dollars!
We have to not buy into their bullshit but Nintendo fans can't help themselves and ruined it for everyone else.
Especially after they showed us how much work they were willing to put into Metroid Prime and release it for $40
He just keep on returnin'
To be honest this game is masterpiece!
Donkey Kong Country Returns Again AGAIN
I'm probably one of the few that doesn't mind re-buying this a 3rd time 😊 . There is something about it that makes me wanna keep revisiting again, it is one of my favorite games and it has an interesting history with me playing it on my Wii (it broke the disc reader while almost reaching the final boss 😅)
I’d loooove to have a mainline 3D Donkey Kong! With all the funk and style we love from the old games
As a starved DK fan, this was my favorite announcement in the Direct.
You shouldn't be..
Glad for you. I'm a starved fan of many series, video game and otherwise and ports of old games for full price I can already play on stuff I own never does it for me. It's more insulting than anything.
When I saw this I thought this was going to be our shadow drop for the direct. The biggest disappointment is that we gotta wait until 2025 for a port.
Im just so happy that there’s a new demographic being able to enjoy this amazing game
I liked this one more than Tropical Freeze, it had more atmosphere
I disagree. I like Tropical Freeze better. Returns has too much jungle alike areas in each area.
God forbid the DK game have fun jungle areas!
I'm honestly really happy to see Returns on Switch, I think it's the perfect stop gap game before bigger things to come on the Switch 2 (plus I've never played it before, so I can finally play it). It's looks like it's going to be the definitive version of the game too, as both the Wii and 3DS versions have positives and drawbacks to them
It's the Return of Return of Returns!
Tropical Freeze is better.
I’m very happy about ports like this, even if the pricing is very silly, because, and say it with me:
We don’t just want games on the switch
We don’t just want lots of games on the switch
We want *allll* the games on the switch
I'm glad it's here, but GIVE ME ANOTHER 3D DK!!
The game is missing a number of lighting and graphic effects, like come on, what are they even doing here.
Nintendo testing to see how many times they can sell the same game at full price and still have people buy it
Bethesda style
Yeah, some people don't have a Wii or WiiU
I’m just happy I can play this game whenever I want now. I’ve only ever beaten it once, and I can’t wait to play it again. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I choose to believe Nintendo has a new DK game in the works and Returns HD is to hold us over until it’s ready. If I’m right, I pray it’s a Switch 2 launch title, though that’s probably asking too much. I just want more Donkey Kong; he’s my favourite Nintendo IP!
My most wanted switch port
God damn this is going to be **profitable** as fuck for Nintendo.
I wish it looked a bit better but it's still cool to finally have it
I feel like a new Donkey Kong game is around the corner!
Just over here patiently waiting on a PUNCH OUT!! game.
The price has already been revealed!! in the Japanese direct that is, the price was in Yen but the conversion said 40 dollars, I know it might not be one to one, but you guys shouldn't asume the worst!!!
It's 60
It's Nintendo, always assume the worst unless you have a sexual kink for disappointment.
Nintendo does re-realise ports/remasters/remakes games, but only if that remaster is old enough, so don't expect LM1 remaster until at least another 5 years
Fully agree: yes a pleasant surprise but c’mon we are long overdue for something new for this important, legacy IP. As you say, the potential is huge.
Man, I'd love to see a 3D Donkey Kong action game on the scale of Breath of the Wild. Imagine swing through the jungle with DK like Spider-Man swinging through New York
I would still like to see another 3d Donkey Kong game. I miss 3d platforms, and I could see Retro Studios doing a good job.
Yeah. We had a super short resurgence with Odyssey, Hat in Time and the first Yooka but that era did not last anywhere near long enough. Yet there are new 2d platformers every few weeks.
Kid Icarus uprising fans watching other 3DS games get re-releases: ☠️
the fact that the switch doesn't have its own DK game is a disgrace
Somehow, Donkey Kong Country returned.
They're cooking something. I would love a Donkey Kong 2,5D on the switch 2.
I never got to play DCKR, so I’m actually pretty happy with this port (though if it’s $60 I’m waiting for it to go on sale)
Honestly I think I like this game better than Tropical Freeze
@@jaretco6423cuz Returns is a better game
Honestly, we should've seen this coming since the DK area in Nintendo World is based on this game.
It's a hard sell when Tropical Freeze has been on the Switch for six years and is the superior game.
thats exactly why its not, people who have played tf know its amazing and a lot of them likely havent played returns. They know its the same format and would want to give it a try
They're both about the same in terms of quality honestly. I think the bias leans towards TF because 1. David Wise, 2. no shitty motion controls, 3. it's the only one on Switch.
This is for people that never played the original, mostly. Agreed, though.
Funnily enough, with this remake all DKC games are on switch. Now for DK64 on NSO
I always forget that Xenoblade 1 is part of the Wii -> 3DS -> Switch pipeline.
Donkey kong country returns: the returnening: returngence
Subtle Naddpod reference at the beginning I see
Nintendo's locked in rn fr. Best end-console slate I've seen ever.
I think a big new 3D DK game could be a good launch/first year game for Switch 2, maybe even in the place of a new 3D Mario initially and that would come later in the generation.
7:37 Playable Dixie Kong in this Game. We never really found out what the other Kongs were doing during Returns did we?
