I am early gen Z (2003). My brother was born in 2019 and I am extremely dissatisfied and annoyed with my parents for the way they are “raising” him. When I was young there were rules, when they said something it meant something and I HAD to do what they said otherwise I would get punished, not by my phone being taken or computer taken… i was not allowed outside to play with my friends! Now, with my brother they have no authority over him, he literally says NO when told something and then throws a tantrum and gets off the hook. Of course he also has a tablet to which he is glued the whole day. I am sad for him that he won’t experience playing outside in a group of 20/30 kinds from dusk till dawn. Sad that if he doesn’t have his tablet he doesn’t know how to play, with or without toys. And whenever I call them out on their shitty parenting they get angry and tell me I can raise my own kids however I want when I have them. I try to be a good brother and get him off the tablet and invite him to go play outside or play a board game together but he would rather what skibidi toilet on TH-cam shorts… I am worried about what will become of him.

Same here, 2005 with an actual medical disability, little sister is 2012, she has no concept of actual reality. Our parents "didn't discipline me" according to her... no child, before you existed I got the belt when I misbehaved. That being said, her perception of discipline is getting her technology taken away. There's no actual punishment for her, the reason I'm the "good child" is because I saw actual consequences and got the message THE FIRST TIME.

Maybe, Susie dear, YOU AND BRADLEY SHOULDA KEPT YOUR CLOTHES ON IF YOU WEREN’T GONNA EXPEND THE TIME NEEDED TO RAISE YOUR CHILD! I’ve developed a depressive disorder because of all the negativity I was given on the internet when I was younger that I have to be medicated for. @@Dr.fayg0 the most common thing I hear from parents is that they’re too busy for their kids. And it breaks my heart, because if you’re too busy for your kids, you shouldn’t have had them to begin with. It goes against my religious beliefs, but I think there should be licensing for whether or not people can reproduce. If your go-to method of “parenting” is a screen, no baby for you. And I get it, parenting can be exhausting. I’m pregnant now and all I wanna do is sleep. But if you’re just giving your kid a screen, just so you can be on yours in peace, that’s not responsible, that’s not “too busy,” that’s negligent.

It's a systemic failure. People love to complain (Rightfully) that there isn't enough time in a day to live life with how unbalanced work/life has become, but then shame parents that are going through the exact same struggle. Too nuanced to get into in a YT comment, but I think it's just as lazy to blame the parents as it is to let your kid be on a screen 24/7. It's akin to the millennial kid obesity epidemic (Which was also related to work life balance), I don't blame Gen X parents for that, more so a system that made it possible/encouraged that behavior.

I don't blame younger people, and I don't think they are "worse" or "doomed" but I will blame the parents. They should know. Especially if they are millennials, and know how it can mess up someone to be online all day long. Both my kids are millennials, and I remember that they were limited to 1 hour per day on internet, and they were not allowed to speak to strangers. They had messenger, and MySpace, but they were allowed to speak to family members, and other kids they knew at school.

@@shirashiraonthewall It's a reflection that got me thinking about the kind of productions I've been personally working on. I work as a cleanup artist for 2d animation, which means I take care of rough animation, clean every line up, and once the scene is all tidy, I'll send it over to color department. In the most recent production I was in, we were constantly given one or two seconds long scenes (along to longer ones of course), and to me it not only it felt like something ordinary, but it was even a bit of a relieve - shorter scenes means less drawings to cleanup, and I can send them back in faster and move on with my day.
But then when we got a mid-production montage and now that the scenes were actually flowing one after the other, the frequent changes, and the bright colors, and the more active parts created this weird effect of overstimulation, in a sense. And what I know is a 22 minutes long episode began to feel like an eternity.
And one day we had someone else in the studio talking about another show that she wasn't personally involved in, but she said that when she saw the montage it felt the exact same. Too fast-paced and too colorful for her to really enjoy.
You can also see it from older anime, just how much things jave changed in terms of pacing and scenes timing; maybe there were less frames, or less movement of the chatacters, but the whole thing could feel more readable and relaxing.

Kids aren't mature enough to understand that there are really, really fucking awful people on the internet. Hell not even I can fully understand this shit.
Parents need to control what their kids are watching if they are to let them use electronics.

Neither I nor them knew what it actually was and looking back at it I'm disgusted. I fucked around and found out.
I abandoned or maybe even terminated both of my accounts and never came back to them. This was before I found out what the situation meant, but I don't regret this decission at all.

    1. Extremely limited attention span - usually 2-3 mins at best. Easily bored and distracted.
    2. Poor memory - unable to retain something that was covered moments before.
    3. Zero imagination - unable to think up an original idea.
    4. Stunted communication / interaction skills - no understanding of group work, turn-based activities, etc.

Same here dude, I was born in 1996 and graduated high school in December of 2014. Some students in my high school couldn't do basic maths, logic reasoning or writing. Parents started using screens, whether iPads, Nintendo 3Ds, Video Games, or laptops, as a way to babysit their kids so they can be lazy and negligent in 2006 to 2011, before that it was tv, but at least the parents generally held control and access to the tv remote. It has also just gotten much more worse and much more widespread now, which is sad. I myself also find myself being too addicted to screens some days, and the internet culture is not as positive and fun as it was when I was a child or even a teenager using it, it is mostly negative and/or neutral nowadays. I feel like the more negative side/aspects and less positive/fun sides of the internet began taking over around 2016 to 2017. Brainrot internet culture also existed when I was a kid and a teenager however, and it led to some kids ignoring their school education in replacement of internet entertainment. I really wish there was a mandatory "parenting children" year long class that adults have to take once they become parents or will become parents in the future.

Those commercial breaks allowed for boredom and going and doing things like going outside during a show you don’t like or going and getting a toy or snack, having that lapse in attention and boredom is really important for kids
Shows like coco melon don’t have that break, it’s just content, content and more content with bright colours and no space for the brain to breathe or process it

  • @lexxosaurus

I'm a high school teacher in an affluent district and yes, can confirm most of the students here read/write at a fourth grade level. It's to the point where most students-even the "honors" students-have no idea when they're supposed to capitalize a letter in a sentence, let alone use punctuation like commas. Most of them use extensions like Grammarly on their laptops/Chromebooks, and will type in all lowercase and will mindlessly use Grammarly to automatically correct their grammar. Take away the tool, and they have no idea what to do. The thing is, that BECAUSE they have these tools, it does not matter how many refresh grammar lessons we try to give, or how many times I tell them to "always capitalize the first letter of the sentence, and any forms of I including contractions," it goes in one ear and out the other. There's no need to listen to me or any other adult when they can just keep using Grammarly and co. Ask any high school teacher right now, and they'll say that they're all dying to just take a few weeks and rebuild foundational reading/grammar skills from the ground up, but there's just no time.
So onto the curriculum. If they're all reading at a 4th grade level, what do we do about their English and Literature classes? Well, while we ease them into the year with a lower reading level graphic novel (which, surprise surprise, they all find very boring and aren't quiet about voicing these opinions), after that, they're expected to read all the same books previous generations read in school. But because books aren't as stimulating as what things like Tiktok have accustomed their brains to expect, they just won't read the books. But it doesn't matter if they do read it or not, because all the kids can't fail in a class-admin would never allow it. So if grades are down, another assignment is created as an easy A grade booster. Yes, grade inflation is out of control, and no, the teacher's can't do anything about it. The decisions come from way above us. So, whether or not they read any of the assigned books on their own, not only will students pass the class, but they will pass it with stereotypically good grades. The only way we as teachers can ensure they've read the book is if we literally read it TO them in class, so that's what we do. But even then, their reading comprehension skills are just not there to understand the text. In Special Ed classrooms like Resource Rooms, we can get away with reading 4th grade level books (which, by the way, has REALLY helped the kids rekindle their love of books and reading), but in General Ed? No, the parents/district leaders/admin/the state would throw a fit. We'd be a national new's story. And so, struggling through the high school curriculum it is.
This turned into quite a long explanation. I do really enjoy my job-to be clear-but just like all jobs, there are some rough aspects to it.

I had to prove myself to my parents to get A PHONE at my 14th birthday. When I was like 9, I was allowed to use laptop only on the weekends. Now, I don't have facebook, tiktok, insta, and even wattpad. I can focus on my studies more and know about the value of an electronic device. I used to hate my parents for being so strict but I feel grateful that I am not having brain rot rn.

I agree a lot of millennials don’t have a village but not for the reason that you said. 24:01 I think they don’t have a village cuz the village is tired. Families are tired of having to deal with their kids awful behavior or deal with kids unable to interact with the adults in their lives. There’s a lot of entitlement around parents “needing a break” but not raising their kids to exist in an environment outside of their care. These kids aren’t taught how to exist in an unfamiliar or possibly uncomfortable environment, I saw when I taught preschool. You could see children who had unlimited screen time and those who got it as a treat or when they met behavior expectations. I just think the village is tired.

Now, I do have to say that some of them are completely fine and normal. ultimately I blame the parents, but even then they can't always do something about it. for example my little brother went playing at a friends house and he and his friend ended up watching a movie that wasn't exactly meanr for their age, he came out absolutely traumatized and scared of the dark all over again. When i was raised in easter Europe by my parents we had very strict rules for using electronics. I got a tablet when i was 8 and could only use it on weekends for 4h a day and got my first phone only after passing a grade with high enough annual grade point average. That applied to both my older sister and younger brother since we were simmiliar ages, but now when i have even younger sister and literal toddler brother the rules lossened up for them i guess beacuse they don't really have anyone to play with beacuse of the age gap that's between us. Scoldings and punishments were also used for which im thankfull for beacuse it helped me to learn discipline and like made me think before i do something.

When I was in 4th grade I was reading at a 2nd grade level, and my teacher worked HARD to get me to like reading. But she could only do that because I was one of the very few in the class that wasn’t reading at level, and I had fantastic parental involvement. These poor fucking kids. Absolutely heart breaking. How are we continuing to let this happen?

My brother and I had several stuffed animals, and I remember one of our favorite pastimes was making parades with them, haha. We’d line them up and march them in columns all around the house, hahaha. Looking back, it seems kind of silly, but I also remember how much fun we had coming up with their dialogues and making them move in formation. We could spend hours doing that. The bike, roller skates, skateboards, scooters, our dog and adventure buddy, pogs, balls... childhood memories are my greatest treasure. Videogames and cartoons were fine, but who can refuse an real life adventure over them!
