Fully Functional 3D Printed Engines?!? | Electronics Maker

  • We spoke with Eric Harrell, a mechanical engineer with an obsession for internal combustion engines! Using a combination of CAD design, low-cost 3D printing, and a love for internal combustion engines, he has created working models of several engines, transmissions, and differentials. All with cutouts so you can see what’s going on. And, when we say they’re fully functional, you can change gears and switch from two to four wheel drive! Even if combustion engines are on their way out, this is a great teaching tool and fascinating to see.

    Such an awesome guy to create that, not only for others to learn from but, to do it on a "low-end" printer to boot!
    A gentleman and a scholar.
    Kudos, sir.

      Yeah, he's really hard to find online, I don't know if he's continued doing it or not. It would be sad if he's had to stop.

    I had the clear engine model kit (had the anatomy ones too) when I was a young boy and I loved them. I always wished they had more complex versions so thanks for sharing.

    Imagine when we get the technology for these to withstand combustion

      With the sintering printing tech, can't they do aluminum and other metals? It seems like that would actually be functional, though it is *way* more expensive. I know they have quasi-metal filament for FDM 3D printing like this but, while I've never used it, I doubt it could handle the heat and pressure of a real engine.
      With the push for electric cars, I wonder if the internal combustion engine is going to disappear before extruded 3D printed stuff is good enough to actually use with combustion.

      @@CircuitBread these are really cool models. Thanks for the outstanding interview! As for the emerging electric vehicles, I don't see internal combustion engines disappearing anytime soon because of that. If anything, advancement in technologies like 3D printing will only enable internal combustion engines to stay around for longer IMHO, hopefully pushing the limits on efficiency and emmissions.

    Yo ERic, you are probably within 10 years into the future. Can 3D metal printers (which are being used now) create your engine to compete with engines today>

      We can't find his web page anymore, but a lot of his designs are available on Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/ericthepoolboy/designs if you have a spare couple hundred hours!

      Hi Scott, agreed! Unfortunately, the link on the card he gave us when we met him didn't work and we can't find him anywhere. I think his old designs are still available on Thingiverse and other 3D repositories and hopefully he pops back up there at some point.

    How difficult to offer this as a kit. Can you try a kickstarter/indiegogo campaign? I would buy one.

      Hey RJW, I highly doubt Eric ever checks these comments - go check out his website or see if there's a way to communicate with him on Thingiverse. And good luck, I hope he's inspired to continue making cool things.

    • @CircuitBread
      @CircuitBread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're open source so he wasn't asking any money for them. But I think he either folded or gave up, because I haven't seen much from him since we interviewed him. However, you can check out his profile on Thingiverse that has quite a few cool designs you can download and use: www.thingiverse.com/ericthepoolboy/designs

      @@CircuitBread is it the guy that made the Toyota 22RE engine with transmission and 4wd modules?

    • @CircuitBread
      @CircuitBread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think so. He's made quite a few things. His name is Eric Harrell, I believe. But the main internet presence I can find of him on the internet is there on Thingiverse. His official website, which was on the card he gave me when we met, is no longer up.

      @@CircuitBread yep that would be him. He hasn’t really put anything else out after that Mazda engine about a year ago I think. I would bet it’s like most of the small youtubers I’ve talked to and watched for a while.. school and/or work ends up needing more time than it used to. I love that he wanted people to make and build these engines and stuff because it’s an amazing learning experience. I hope he can give some more to the community overtime as the amazing creator he is!

      The card he gave us had a link and that link didn't work - it seems he doesn't maintain the site anymore, which is unfortunate.
