Oi. Superb demonstration. About the name. Turnip Greens is a direct reference to the sounds of down home southern fried music. A little country, a little blues, a little rockabilly, a little jazz, a little metal, and a whole lotta Soul! The pedal does a great job. Play some Dickie Betts through it, you'll see. Or maybe Dimebag, or SRV. Y'all stay real and stay real high! Paz y luz.
It's great, watching a player who plays simply for the joy of it... Mary, it's a pleasure watching someone who enjoys what they do, especially, when they do it well. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Cheers, from across the waters....
Love the riff at 6.14: I always enjoy the way that trying a new pedal or setting will suggest a way of playing that can sometimes be quite different to the way one usually plays.
I have the same thought process. I’m a simpleton. My friend gave me a Blessed Mother pedal for my bday. I’m thinking, “what am I gonna do with that?” I just play a tele through a peavy delta blues combo. That’s it. I’m happy with that. When I’m singing, and then go to a solo, I always hit the pedal too late at the beginning, and too late at the end.
"Turnip Greens" - a Southern States food specialty."Turnip greens are extremely easy to grow, especially in fall. As nights get longer and cooler, turnip greens become crisper and sweeter." ..... So the pedal is appropriately named. Awesome.
With your playing style, I can see why you played clean for so long. My overdrive right now is a Soul Food...........and now you've dragged me into this pedal! Thank you!!
I find it quite refreshing to see someone getting into pedals for the first time! Your playing is really good as well! Pedals should be used to color your sound, not bury it in a wash of noise! keep doing what you are, you are just beginning to discover the value of guitar landscaping!!!
My first 4 years playing(12-16) I only used my amp for drive/reverb and then a wah for quite awhile before pedal experimenting. Really dig your video. You play so smoothly.
Mary Spender I could recommend pedals all day but you play a really good variety of different genres on your channel. Then there's live vs studio. This article opened my eyes to how a great live musician doesn't need expensive boutique pedals.proguitarshop.com/andyscorner/prince-the-unsung-guitar-hero If you've never checked out proguitarshopdemos TH-cam channel you should. Wide spectrum of different styles. Keep kickin ass
That was lovely - but I mostly wanted to see what books you've been reading! (Also, turnip greens are a staple of African-American "soul food," so that is presumably the connection...)
Hi Mary and world! I was so excited and I don’t think very many people within earshot of my shouts of joy would understand! I was the winning bidder on D’Addario giving Tuesday of the ElectroHarmoniX Turnip Greens. I’ve been wanting a superior overdrive and I remembered your video when I saw this specific Turnip Greens signed by Mike Matthews! Not only do I get the fantastic OD, but also going to a good cause? I wish more of life’s decisions were so simple! Thanks for shining a light on this little Overdrive of mine… let it shine!!!!
Thank you Mary, I know what you mean about the stigma and reluctancey about pedals. Started playing when I was 12 years old, I'm 68 now, I do remember getting a wah-wah pedal at a very young age and didn't think much about it at the time, it simply served a purpose in a couple songs, Probably some Hendrix. But now I understand the purpose they serve in developing your depth of tone and the coloring, honestly I've been looking at electro-harmonix line of pedals and have been completely blown away. Now I'm working on my own pedal board which has been developing over the years, a looper machine, drum machine, equalizer, delay, reverb, of course a good tuner, I think you get the picture now, the electro- harmonix organ pedals and string pedals Are so much fun . Anyways I hope you're having a wonderful and safe holiday, thank you for your hard work and all that you bring to us as subscribers. Stay blessed and keep safe, much love from Texas. Danny
Quite refreshing hearing someone just talk about how much they love a pedal and how it helps them personally as a musician, rather than reviewing the pedal in terms of trying to tell people exactly what the pedal is and what it does! Great video :)
This pedal along with a modulation pedal (a fat chorus or a tremolo) can be an excellent emergency spare pedalboard for travelling. It's simple and versatile at the same time. ... The only thing it lacks (in my opinion) are 1) stereo ins and outs (for this size of pedal they could have implemented) 2) tone control for the reverb tails (but I believe it can be done by changing the pedal order swich and placing an EQ pedal on the [send, return] loop, using the embedded soul food just for vintage reverb tail saturation - post saturation, if you will)
Luke. You are so right. It's a lovely pedal, but maybe a little too simple. Works better for me that though. I can get a little lazy, sometimes restrictions are good for me!
That simplicity is good and handy. Imagine that an entire pedalboard fails during a show and there is no time to test to find where's the glitch. Then you plug this pedal alone and everything is working. When I mentioned a modulation pedal, it's just because there's an fx_loop(send,return) on the turnip greens, but it's just because the common minimalist trio is {overdrive, modulation, echo}. Simple modulations would be the Dunlop Rotovibe or the EHX Stereo Electric Mistress (they both allow you to control effect mix and speed rate, as well as use them still, without the need to "pilot" them while playing), but you don't need those if you only use overdrive and reverb.
Exquisite playing! I'm a recent convert to EHX, I mostly use a BOSS ME 50 for the guitar but have started adding 9 series pedals for added keyboard sounds, starting with a B9. Actual living breathing keyboard players are somewhat thin on the ground so I have to do it myself! EHX do give their pedals some strange names though, but they're not alone. I'm old enough to remember when a flanger was just called a flanger (showing my age)...
If you're ever in the Southampton area let me know, I'll set up a demo! I can't guarantee my music is good, but it is loud! I got the B9 after many fruitless years trying to find a keyboard player (they just want to do solo stuff for the most part) and I just wanted that 'Jon Lord Hammond' sound to fill out our live performances. It works great, after the first gig where I used it people came up afterwards asking where the keyboard player was! I can also do Toccata and Fugue in D Minor with a cathedral organ sound on occasion and I'm looking to expand with the C9, Mel9 and the Synth9 too! Keyboard players watch out, your dominance over so many different sound is coming to an end!
You may want to try an electro harmonix 44 magnum on your pedalboard. A tiny, spare amp in case of emergency. Not quite the warmth of a tube amp, but you could definitely play a gig with it in a pinch.
That ability to switch the order of FX is cool. Most people would say you should place overdrive first. Generally that's true, but in the 70's Santana got some epic sounds overdriving his reverb. I've been playing for three decades :) . You have a nice calm friendly way of presenting your videos, and as for your playing, I like the way you refrain from trying to impress, and that's great because, for one thing, it doesn't distract from sounds coming from what you are showing us. I can tell you've been playing for a long time because you have that economy of movement in your left hand. You know how to keep it supple and fluid by relaxing the hand between shifts. You are a natural. Don't stop playing :) Good luck with your channel!
I've been playing 15 years without a pedal, I was also very proud of it, because the tone came from my playing and I was sure I could make any amp and any guitar sound great just with my playing skills... recently I bought the Friedman BE-OD and I love it, now I want to buy all the pedals in the world!!!
I know nothing about pedals as I play acoustic so this is great for me. I'm making a strat from scratch and will need some tech when it's done. Thanks.
You have just entered a new world of a tremendous vice where you will be utterly at the mercy of what we call effects pedals...say good-bye to your freedom. LOL....:)
I just brought home the B9 Organ Machine - also an EHx pedal - the older of the 2 with the C9 more "current" I guess but I found the old organ sounds and their ability to reach the Hammond B3 sound quite appealing - plus old orthodox type organ selections including cathedral, gospel, - quite amazing. Love your jazz chord solo sound!
I just bought this pedal from the PMT in Cambridge! Demo it in the store made me realize it's the perfect pedal for me, especially with the crazy sound scapes you can do.
Oh, i had that clean channel pride for a long time too. It was a bit justified though, you could sound good with just your amp and your guitar and kept you heard in the mix with everyone using effects until the sun came down. I had a proco Rat that was stolen and after that I stayed pedalless for years.
You'd sound great with a subtle compressor pedal like the Xotic.. like your guitar style, reminded me that I need to be more gentle w my touch at times, I tend to hit the dirt and caveman the thing too often! well done, GL!
keeping a pedal board minimalist and effective.. my small plywood and metal case fits in a 30 litre backpack along with overnight travel essentials... all you really need now is a quality subtle tremelo to enhance rhythm and ambience... then perhaps a seriously uncouth vintage buzzsaw fuzzbox for strategic dramatic single note riffs.... that should wake up an audience of bristol wine bar sophisticates.....
Hey Mary, ThankYou! for introducing me to a pedal I hadn't seen/heard before and the excellent review! So much better when the person who demo's is really into the pedal themselves. I could watch you play all day! Such lovely dimples!! Very lovely Lady!
My favorite as well. I did an a/b test with my friend's Soul Food and we both swore the Turnip Greens sounded better for some reason. Great verb too. When I go to jams with my buddies I just bring this pedal and use the volume on the guitar.
Yeah it's a nice pedal but apart from the reverse effect, you can get pretty much all those sounds from a nice fender twin or vibrolux. I don't mean to sound dismissive.
If you are from the American south (Dixie) you why they called it turnip greens. holy Grail + soul food pedals Holly Grail would point to southern Baptist Churches and Soul Food is another therm for Southern African American food which Turnip greens is a major dish in, and one of my favorite dishes, soul food cooking.
Delightful to hear a pedal being used in a sonic palette for something other than metal tones these days. Thoroughly entertaining video and your accent is divine into the bargain - subscribed.
So nice to hear someone play WITHOUT a ton of distortion to cover up their mistakes:-) Well done Mary, I had begun to give up hope on any new, talented guitarists coming out of the new millenium !!!
The loop on the pedal is really fun to mess with but that switch is really magical. I accidentally find amazing tones all the time with that switch to the left.
At first I was like, ah, I can get that sound from the other 30 pedals I have (he says unapologetically ). But then you played the reverse...and I'm off to buy it!
Great work Mary, I have fancied this pedal for a while, but you and your playing have sold me! EHX should hire you! Both your tone and playing are fantastic, keep up the good work.
I found your channel by accident and I thank fate for that. You're so refreshing , honest and candid as well as informative. What an idea for a channel, huh? Seriously great improvs and tasty playing.. Yu go gurl. A
Wow, what a demo! I have reverbs... I have overdrives, but that's something special! Will definitely keep in mind for a smaller travel board, what a great sound you have.
you got me interested in this pedal again lol i forgot how cool it was....im sure someone has told you now but just incase not....when you use the over drive di like that it would probably sound a lot better with some sort of speaker simulation in side of logic....
You need to checkout "That Pedal Show" and that will help you out with any of your technical sonic questions. Some of the best clean sounds are from OD pedals and the guitar volume rolled back. Jimi Hendrix achieved his clean sound from a fuzz pedal and backed off guitar volume. The soul food is a Klon clone, which is a treble booster. Just watch "That Pedal Show" and you'll get some great info. I'd also suggest you check out 50s style wiring on your guitars if you use the volume knob frequently to avoid muddy tone when volume is rolled back. Great videos by the way.

You're very welcome....
It was my pleasure.
I use a soul food and love it. The overdrive is clear but still gives that vintage mid-range grit of overdrive.

Absolutely love EHX. I have an older Small Clone, it broke down a few months ago and EHX fixed it for $25 flat fee.
Well take note of how great her clean sound is. A splash of verb and super transparent drive is most suitable. Such solid playing.
That was lovely - but I mostly wanted to see what books you've been reading!

The reverb goes well with the percussive style of your right hand. Very nice.

Thanks Mickey!

What a marvellous sound, great playing and your video really makes me want this awesome pedal!
Bought it recently. Very high quality reverb and overdrive. My only critism is that i'd prefer a Tremelo-function over the Reverb-Inverse.
I have mine coming in the mail !!!! I got one straight after seeing this video, love the content thanks for your videos
YAY!
I gotta try this one out with my electric kazoo 🎤
You might be interested in an Exciter effect also. It twinkles the high and rounds out the bass.
Love the Ocean blue? Les Paul, what make is she? Thanks.✌️✨

Hey Mary, ThankYou! for introducing me to a pedal I hadn't seen/heard before and the excellent review! So much better when the person who demo's is really into the pedal themselves. I could watch you play all day! Such lovely dimples!! Very lovely Lady!
Thanks so much Steven!
Fab playing and a snazzy take on a very versatile pedal. Oh, that is a sweet reverse verb. Many thanks for sharing your perspective!
Thanks so much for watching :)

hell yeah!
Look the the right power supply for the SF. This helps...
thumbs up for the great licks and the surf green guitar. nice fingerpicking technique .
Thank you :) isn't it a beaut
Great playing and great sounding pedal. I like these subtle but cool effects. Thanks for the demo.
I love the way you play; sounds amazing with reverb. I'll search your music on Spotify.
Thank you!
excellent demonstration and beautiful playing Mary.
Thank you!
i am very tempted to buy one, really nice pedal and the send/return feature looks amazing. cheers from brazil
Felipe Abreu go for it! such a useful tool!
I think the Turnip Greens name is with reference to the song "Green Onions" by Booker T and the MGs. The guitar tone on that track is similar to this.
Amazing! Thanks for letting me know
Your responses to me and the rest of the people in this thread have earned you a sub :)
Ameer Saban why thank you :)
nice to hear musicians from Bristol. I live as well in Bristol
Yay Bristol!
This is the best video showing a pedal Straightforward. With a great performance. 👍
Yeah it's a nice pedal but apart from the reverse effect, you can get pretty much all those sounds from a nice fender twin or vibrolux. Granted you have a plate reverb on the Holy Grail, but the variety of reverb sounds is not that great. I'd rather use a natural amp reverb with a Strauss amp 20 watt blues pushing the drive channel.

Thoroughly entertaining video and your accent is divine into the bargain - subscribed.
:) Thanks so much!
Lysdexia and.
Great pedal!!! Use it all the time with the "treble" side of my Chapman Stick...
Thank you! That sounds like a great idea
Jesus!!! I love that single cut you are playing...BAM! LOVE IT!
Cheers Mezza. Enjoyed hearing you put this pedal through its paces.
I like your monitor stands.
me too!
Awesome pedal! I think I'll pick one up myself! I can't stop buying pedals! I bought 2 delay pedals this week already!
Hi marry. That pedal is brilliant and you play really well. Can’t wait for more videos by you and thanks for sharing. Xx gareth from wales. Xx
great presentation. Clear and easy to watch. Nice size on the Picture in Picture.
Good Stuff !
So nice to hear someone play WITHOUT a ton of distortion to cover up their mistakes:-) Well done Mary, I had begun to give up hope on any new, talented guitarists coming out of the new millenium !!!
I'm honestly sorely l slowly drifting away from distortion and overdrive. Being clean has a lot more tone options.
it's fascinating that with your extensive use of a clean sound you use humbuckers.
Haha fascinating indeed :D
Nice playing and lovely tone
Thanks for watching!
The loop on the pedal is really fun to mess with but that switch is really magical. I accidentally find amazing tones all the time with that switch to the left.
Great review and great playing! Thanks for sharing - will go try one of these out soon!
Thank you so much Tim for watching. Yes go and have a go - really lovely pedal.
you kick ass sing like nobody else and your playing is splendid you should a really big name
I'm working on it!
At first I was like, ah, I can get that sound from the other 30 pedals I have (he says unapologetically ). But then you played the reverse...and I'm off to buy it!
YAY! It's incredible isn't it. Have you got one yet? Let me know how you get on!
Yu go gurl. A
Albert Arguelles thanks so much Albert! really kind of you
Bought one of these a few years back...its just a beautiful sounding thing...
omg what a great job, you just sold me, the electro-harmonix thanks Mary !!
haha thanks Jonas!
You've got great taste in gear and you play beautifully.
thank you very much!
this is a happy video with mustard , nice playing very enjoyable to listen too !
Love your guitar playing and EHX pedals........
Btw I love that you use books to get your monitors to the right height (I do the same)
haha cheapest stands ever!
Wow, what a demo! I have reverbs... I have overdrives, but that's something special! Will definitely keep in mind for a smaller travel board, what a great sound you have.
:D
you got me interested in this pedal again lol i forgot how cool it was....im sure someone has told you now but just incase not....when you use the over drive di like that it would probably sound a lot better with some sort of speaker simulation in side of logic....
Thanks! yeah I just kept it simple and didn't change anything in the project so people could hear the real pedal.
You've got me sold lass... This, a delay and a looper and I'm good.
That reverse reverb sounded mint!
David Holmes yes that's seriously all you need! it's the best!
Might want to check out the Electro-harmonix B9 Pedal. With your picking style , it could be another "love" moment. :)
your playing is lovely
also an mxr dyna- comp compression pedal would sound great with ur style, cheers!
I have an MXR Custom comp that I rarely use nowadays. Maybe I should try the dyna!
Thanks so much for the advice. I really appreciate it.
I would def put reverb last in the chain of effects.
Cool! Well this pedal gives you options.
