DIY Soil Test vs Lab Test - How Reliable Is It?

  • Howdy folks! Welcome to 8th Day Chronicles! Thank you for stopping by our channel today. Today I will show the results from a state certified soil-testing lab against results we got from the DIY soil test kit we purchased for $18 at TS farm supply store.
The pH tests from the DIY were MUCH more user-friendly than the other nutrient tests, which I believe leads to a more accurate test result (eliminating steps in the process also eliminates the possibility of inaccurate results). pH test numbers is what we are the most interested in and this test kit gave pretty accurate results, good enough that I would use them again.
Thanks a bundle for watching! We pray God blesses you and your family!

Our soil test for this year is back. A simple one sheet test result, with recommendations for amendments at the bottom. Seemed sufficient. Everything in the acceptable range, need to.add nitrogen every year, but all other items were good.
Thanks for the product review, tell Susan we said hi.

Thats fantastic! Youre set for spring!
Our pH levels seem to drop every couple years, apparently as the lime absorbs further into the soil, we have to add more.
      Appreciate it much!

I can’t agree more on the PH level. Ours is 6.7 and we haven’t fertilized in three years. When the legumes thrive they pull nitrogen out of the air and everything seems to balance out. I’m no soil biologist either but the proof is in the quality of hay we get. Thanks for the video and God bless.

6.7 is very good! Our soil here is usually very sufficient in everything but pH and nitrogen. When we get our pH up to an appropriate level (with lime amendments), everything seems to fall in line, and then add plenty of clover and wala...we're good and our cool season hay grasses show it.
Thanks a bundle for watching and we sure do appreciate you.

This was very informative. I am going to buy the test kit. By the way; do you suppose there could be something to, "Frost Liming"?

Thank you very kindly! The DIY kit did well for me with pH. So-so with the other nutrient tests. I'll buy again if for nothing else but the pH part of the tests.
I'll look into the "frost liming". Ive never heard of that before but you've peaked my interest!

Great video. I started wondering while listening to you, what kind of tests do the labs use to get their results? We tend to imagine they use all kinds of scientific tests, and they might. But I wonder if they use tablet tests from a kit as well. May be kits we aren’t able to buy, but kits nonetheless. Just a thought.🤷‍♀️

Thats a good thought! Never considered how they actually test. I always imagined a bunch of scientist nerds with white coats, pocket protectors and round wire-rim glasses using all sorts of smoking, steaming chemicals to test with, in a haz-mat sealed room somewhere , LoL.
