@@martinvr12 true, but i have to admit that when GTA6 kicks in people may be disappointed because rendering a whole city with tens of thousands of people probably will not be that vital and distinct than the realtivley small settlements and NPC amounts of RDR2 - and probably GTA6 will not have that much nature and wildlife wich made a huge amount of the experience in my opinion. AND GTA is more of a sartire so the story will be propably not that deep again. I hope i am wrong, Rockstar suprises me since nearly 20y and i hope they do it again.

What I really love about Red Dead 2 is that it isn't just beautiful because they carefully placed every light source and shadow and light ray like they were making a painting. They just put together a bunch of very realistic systems simulating things like clouds, sunlight, shadows, and global illumination, and the beauty just... happens on its own.
When you wake up early on a foggy morning at Horseshoe Overlook, those beautiful rays of light poking through the leaves don't happen just because an artist at Rockstar made it so. They happen because the game is simulating what things would naturally look like in those conditions. It's a result of the low rising sun interacting with cool morning fog passing through the leaves of the forest around you. And just like here, with the rainbows. Why are there rainbows in the clouds where no player would see it? Because those are conditions where you'd see a rainbow. Like you said: consistency.

First off, the reason RDR is gorgeous can be summed up in a single word: America. The most art can do is imitate, but never replace what God's hand rests over.
But beyond that my experience is similar to yours, for years I've been trying to find what differentiates RDR2 visually, beyond that of other AAA games, that makes it so closely match early American landscape paintings, and I believe it mainly boils down to shadowing. Landscape artists will selectively lighten and darken parts of the image based on cloud cover to create a moody effect, which RDR2 can replicate due to the fact their clouds are volumetric; the process of projecting a shadow from a cloud map is the same as other games, but they soften the map based off the cloud's distance to the ground, and factor the cloud's density to calculate what percentage of sunlight the cloud obscures - both very fast operations that reuse byproducts of their cloud rendering pipeline, yet entirely define the game's aesthetic.
Also, the rainbows are not physically based but rather an illusion, neat right?

@@locinolacolino1302 It's all about the Hudson River School of Art movement and the Luminism style. Those 2 artistic movements are all about the american landscape, and it is what gives RDR2 that same powerful feeling. It is all a system in the game, yes, but with that creative direction in mind.

What elevates the map of RDR2 compared to the map of say Cyberpunk or Watch Dogs 3 is that every tree, every boulder, every path, every house, they were all placed there with a purpose. Big advantage of making actual 3d clouds in a game: It helps with lighting, mood and atmosphere, also it looks and feels damn realistic.

  • @KingBurgers
    @KingBurgers ปีที่แล้ว +7

The main issue, and I know we all know this, is that other companies have learned that they do not need to do what R* does in order to make money. If the core market for games decided as a group that anything less than RDR2-level clouds would result in an unprofitable release, then developers would essentially evolve to include those kinds of clouds or they'd stop making games all together.
The reason why we continue to increase the amount of bullshit in games is because that bullshit directly increases profits. Wasn't it like 50% of all of EA's revenue last year was just MTX? Other companies hear this and think, "Oh, so I guess the primary market doesn't actually care about MTX and will happily engage with it."
That's basically what the "death of the AA game" means. You have the data driven slogs that are created from the C-suite down on one side, and small team indie darlings on the other. There are exceptions obviously, but what we call "exceptions" today was just what all games were a couple of decades ago. Also I guess Nintendo doesn't count for the sake of this argument lol.
But like, anytime you find yourself asking "Wait, this is worse than before, this is a bad product, why aren't they making things in the way I like?" it's sadly because you are no longer part of the relevant market base they are targeting. I'm 35 now, been gaming since the SNES era. It's been great until that damned horse armor in Oblivion. Can you imagine? The entire "gamer-sphere" collectively REEEEEEEing about a single piece of optional cosmetic DLC? That was the beginning of the end. Also shit like WoW too, since it basically was the original template for the Games As A Service model showing that regular incremental income over time was a much better business model than one-time purchases. I dunno.
Anyway I love your videos Karl! The reloads, the ragdolls, the technical demonstrations and explanations (I hope I'm not the only one). It's all neat :) As I get older I find myself more interested by the industry news and the technical side of things. If more people were interested in how games are made, we might see a shift in actually caring about the wellbeing of developers who are often forced to make fast, dirty, and exploitative mechanics because it's "do it or you're fired" from on high. /rant

So Rockstar are the only devs that (still) have a valid license and everyone else would have to do all the hard coding work themselves if they wanted to catch up. I think holding this one system against other studios is unfair due to the license no longer being available. All other systems are fair game.

I doubt we'll ever get something quite like RDR2 again, this game is a labour of all of their studios efforts combined across the globe for 5 years (2000 people if you factor outsourcing) and yet they still resorted to debilitating crunch? Clearly they're drawing themselves too thin.
I'm calling it, gaming has officially peaked, and we've knew it during the PS3 era with the Batman Arkham series.

I LOVE absolutely LOVE rdr2 but I believe these volumetric clouds were just testing for GTA 6, I mean like seriously, you never actually get to appreciate them up close because there is only one mission in the game were you fly which is the hot air balloon mission (please don't get on my ass if there's more hot air balloon missions) but in GTA 5 you are in the sky a lot with trevor and messing around with planes a lot which there will definitely be more airborne missions like the GTA 5 ones in GTA 6

While the attention to detail is incredible in many aspects, there are a lot of things Rockstar does very poorly, for example shooting on consoles is just bad. I'm actually glad other studios don't follow the same design philosophy. People who want incredible detail in their games can play Rockstar games, people who want basic gameplay mechanics to be good (such as shooting) can play other titles, so everyone can enjoy what they prefer.

I think its not about other dev doesn't want to replicate the amount of details that R* games has, but they simply can't, restricted with budget and time. You included mafia definitive edition and CP2077 there, but Hangar 13 or CDPR is nowhere near has the same infrastructure as R* have, the industry giant. The only difference between Hangar 13 and CDPR is that one knows their limitation so they scale their game scope to what they can afford and the other one often aims too high from what they are capable of, so the final result is much much more messier than they hoped for. For Watch Dogs, Ubisoft might be big, but they're still far below R* number. Plus they also managed the money themselves, so putting out products as fast as possible to keep the revenue going kinda makes sense strategy for them to survive, eventhough their product sometimes suffers because of it.

While it is impressive from a technical and graphical standpoint, I don’t really see what it has to do with making the game good. I mean, RDR2’s gameplay and story would still be the same if they didn’t have volumetric clouds, snow deformation, and so on. Honestly, I’m glad most other developers don’t go for this level of detail, since that would make most games difficult to run on low end PCs and inflate development budgets, just for some cosmetic improvements.

RS games are good and all but, damn, do they have you meet with so much troubles, incredibly long long loading times that end up in the game freezing, game not loading, kicking you out of the game mid session or mission to name a few but, what i consider the most annoying problem to date is that RSG launcher starting in offline and not letting you play or redeem a single game, until you use a vpn, what's that all about? so far, RSG is the ONLY company to do such a scumbag move so far and boy, do i hate that crap, especially when you pay good money to these people.
