I thought you would find it amusing, since you were talking about how the Mirabel actress nasalizes her character, this interview about Galaxy Quest (around 0:40s) talks about how the actor used "the seven resonators" to inform his alien species voice th-cam.com/video/Y2d04uKZiQ8/w-d-xo.html
I really appreciate that this song doesn’t go extremely high. It’s alto friendly. Personally, the ending “miracle” high note was enough climax for me. Like that one note makes me wanna cry lol. The context also helps, because she’s the only one without a power, making her a more “normal” or “relatable” character. So her voice being imperfect and not an open belt makes her different from the typical powerhouses we see in musicals. I felt like I could be her. That’s what I appreciate about this song 💕
I don't know if the songs originally written that way or if they just really loved Stephanie Beatriz as Maribel and then brought the songs into her range ( I think it's probably hard for her to sing those higher notes so they wanted the songs to be comfortable for her), but I really like the way they did it too.
@@crownmagus8291 I've seen somewhere on the internet that it was pretty intentional to make the songs more 'singable' to add to the relatablenss of the movie. I can't really remember the source so I might be making this up.
I’m an alto and can’t sing her super high note at the end. Luckily, my son is seven years old and always happy to step in for that part 😆 Honestly, every song in this movie is so lovingly crafted and my family can’t get enough of any of them. Each song lends itself beautifully to real emotions that everyone can relate to, and that’s why it’s my favorite Disney movie.
I agree. Everything is sooooo soprano based and everyone can't sing that high. I find myself being able to sing all these songs to perfection because they are more alto based songs which is extremely rare.
This is NOT the "Let it Go" of Encanto. Let it go was a song about freedom, this is a song about being trapped. Elsa sang more open and upbeat at the end because she was finally free. Everything about Mirabel is tight. She hides her feelings, she puts on a brave face, she tries so hard to just be part of her family. This song is her want song. Her voice is tight because of the pain behind the words. I honestly hear her on the verge of tears through the beginning of the song. It is an amazing portrayal of how emotion changes everything, ESPECIALLY your voice.
@@videomissionary I think this song is very different from other Disney 'I want' songs, so it is hard to compare. It has a raw feel to it, which is a change from most Disney songs.
@@sarahkwast1250 you're right, they can't be compared. But the likes of Ariel, Mulan, Belle, and Simba are just in another league compared to sweet Mirabel [strictly speaking about their I Want songs]
With Lin-Manuel Miranda coaching her, I can almost promise you there's a reason she sings at the same note for each repetition of "Open your eyes." The whole song is her singing about waiting and being stuck in one place and never being able to move forward from the moment that has so far defined her life. That's probably something to do with it.
Yeah, as well as in “Burn” there were more dynamic and growing version first, but Lin Manuel Miranda had to remake it cause it didn’t fit to Eliza’s character and to the fact that she forgave Alexander later.
Yeah agreed, people have to remember also that Mirabel's character is a child. She's only 15 years old and honestly despite the fact she's not belting it out it's still one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard from a Disney movie. I get very teary half way through this song every time. Sometimes belting out a song is not right for a character for several reasons and I just feel they got it right with this song
Yes it’s similar to “what’s beyond that line, will I cross that line” and “this island” getting rhymed many times to itself in Moana. It’s indicating a feeling of being stuck
@@Wigfield84 I think in the case of moana it was more her anticipation building since during the song she starts getting on the boat. But I absolutely agree for this song it’s to indicate she feels stuck in her position
The imperfections of this song in my opinion are what make it so relatable. I cried during this song in the film because for me the way she was singing it was so down to earth. I felt like I could sing it too. That said I understand your criticisms of the song. I just think that, at least in this particular instance, the way the song was made for the movie and what they were trying to say perfectly.
I think the repeated 'open your eyes, open your eyes' part is sung the same pitch each time and doesn't build because that's the point; she's constantly trying to get people to notice what she's trying to do and help and she's constantly overlooked, especially by her grandmother (who she's singing to in that moment); she's banging her head against a brick wall and not getting through to them, so I think it's a conscious decision to have the melody hang like that. The whole thing is an 'I want' song, for absolute sure, but there's a further layer of absolute frustration and hurt given to her by her family as well compared to something like Go The Distance or Part Of Your World
Abuela is always telling them open their eyes to share the miracle with them. But come the end I think she realized the miracle wasn’t hers and she had to open HER eyes to see it’s for the family entire. Open your eyes is a recurring theme in the movie. I think everyone in a family wants to feel seen and to be loved for who they are. So I totally agree with you on this!
I feel like it’s more obvious (that it’s not just “Let it go”, and more “I want” + extra frustration and emotion) at the end, where is she ends with a whisper. THAT. You just know it’s not “Let it go”, but instead a depressed teen who’s admitting to the fact that, yes. They may be a little depressed.
So, this is my take. Lin is good at interpreting the character. The constant battle of pulling and pushing. This is in Burn, Waiting on a Miracle and Wait for it. Specially Wait for it, you can hear it here too. Like you said, you want them to let it GO! but they can't, without risking family or tradition, or society. The song and the melody gives you that frustration of wanting to do something and cant do it.
I also feel like Burn shouldn’t be like super she used to be mine belt-y like she described, I feel like the way Burn is written fits Elizas character.
Note him being good at interpreting the character becomes super prominent when you know that Lin actually asked to be a part of the making of the movie as early as possible to the point he actually had a big hand in shaping the story (The two co-directors and Lin shared how being a part of a big family shaped them, thus making the family the core part of the narrative, and Lin inspired the setting because of his general background culturally. That last bit is not 100% accurate hence general.)
Yes! The reason Lin is a songwriter that even some people who normally don’t like musicals tend to latch onto, is because he writes songs to fit the characters… the character always comes first. He sits in the character and writes until it sounds true. It isn’t always gonna make the most technically perfect song then, but it will be extremely relatable and honest.
I think this song perfectly fits Mirabels character. Compared to Elsa and let it go, Mirabel is still a child and this song is about her trying to be honest with herself about how she truly feels. And how she feels is kinda sad and lonely in a way. I really don’t think this was meant to or needed to be a big belting moment.
To those, who might have not catch that. She was in active labour while recording the song. Which makes it even more powerful if you think that she was really literally waiting for one of the greatest miracles to happen. Words "I am ready! Come on I'm ready!" and later "Bless me now" have a completely new power once you realise that!
@@ister2507she was not in active labor, she was just at the beginning of contractions and didn’t want to freak anyone out. Just saying that there is a difference
Gonna have to STRONGLY disagree with you on that last opinion. Not every song like this needs to have a big progression and massive belt to be amazing and beautiful. This song feels much more real and personal than Let it Go. Don’t get me wrong I love Let it Go but there’s a lot about her coming out of her shell finally in a space where she can be free after so long while Waiting On a Miracle is Mirabel still stuck… wanting to let it out but being forced to keep it all in to please the family like Elsa did before her big song. There’s sentimental value to it being more “flat” supposedly and down to earth while Let It Go is the thing we all wish we could do but it’s super showy and over the top
Spot on! I could ot agree more. Contextualizing the piece makes a hug difference. I find this song is underrated. I think Beatriz's performance works because it fits Mirabel exactly.
Not to mention that wasn’t another factor to not belting because of the character voice? Like how most of the singing was kind (i forgot the word) of, “in character” throughout the movie. Whether that’s Mirabel or anyone else. I’m no expert, but I assume you can only go so high and away from that chosen voice (the “up in the nose” voice) when singing without kind of “losing” it🤷♀️
I agree. The song fit the situation. I feel like she took this out of context, comparing it to other movies when they were not in the same metaphorical boat. Bringing up lin manuel miranda was just a low blow too. Burn from hamilton was just as pulling as She used to be mine. Thats just her opinion.
I adore this song, annd I love Stephanie´s performance. Her voice isn´t flawless and perfect in it, but it´s also not supposed to. It´s an emotionally charged moment for Mirabel, so from a character standpoint it makes sense that she isn´t singing perfectly. I think specifically in the very beginning you can hear that very well with "I´m not fine. I´m not fine."
I personally feel this song is so much better than let it go because it feels more real and emotional. That closed off sound I felt it was because she’s choking down her pain which of course made me personally emote and connect way more to the song than let it go
I feel when most people say this is the "Let it Go!" of Encanto they mean it's the standard "finding yourself" that Disney is known for. Where they have a principal character belt out their intentions or shed what's holding them back. It's a trope for musicals, but in terms of voice Idina Menzel is pretty nasal in Let it Go (she gets so much better in Into the Unknown and Show Yourself), but then again Elsa's a grown woman while Mirabel is a 15 year old who has a high nasal based voice. I think the parts where you hear the open vocals here are Stephanie Beatriz's real vocals.
well, Elsa was 18 in the first movie, younger than Luiza (19), Delores(20), and Isabella(21), but older than Mirabelle(15), Camillo(15-16), and Antonio(5)
i personally didn’t mind that the song lacked a huge modulation or development with this song, the song and how she sings makes it feel like she’s trapped in the shadow she’s in, uncertain of when or even if she will get the chance to go beyond her limits and expand
I have to disagree, frozen and encanto are two different feelings and scenarios story. I feel that for the feelings and cultural background, this song hits the spot very well
“im wanting more from it” lmao thats the whole point 😂 Mirabel wants more, but she doesnt know how to do it. Let It Go ‘grew’ because she was running away and trying to find her place. Mirabel literally COULDNT ‘grow’ because she was stuck, both metaphorically with her singing and physically, in her family dynamic. Mirabel is WAITING for something to come to her at this point in the movie, Elsa was proactive in her actions and her voice.
Exactly what I was going to say. There is a narrative reason to the choice. We need to feel where Mirabel is coming from. Day after day she's frustrated and searching for a change.
it's because she's really trying to transfer the emotion of mirabel being really upset and almost in tears which we do get more nasally when that happens, it's not as open or pretty, but fits the moment way more, she's very capable of sounding pretty and open, but it was an acting choice not to to keep it more emotionally impactful bc you won't sound pretty when you're so hurt
I think she sounded really nice. The voice fit the tone of the song. I think that she doesn't build during the segment about "Open your eyes" because nobody IS opening their eyes to her. It's also a mirror between nobody seeing her and her not seeing herself. Also this song was recorded while her voice actress was in labor so honestly, this is just amazing how it is.
I love that Encanto is the first Disney movie (I think) to give Altos the Melody! And the reason why I think it lacks open chest is because Stephanie, who’s a grown woman, has to try to sing like a 15 year old, which *is Mirabel’s age* . Lin has written an “I want” song that is slightly better…. “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. So he can do it.
I actually wasn't sure how I felt about Waiting On a Miracle at first, but I came to love it after listening to it a few times. You're right that it isn't really as "belty" as some other major Disney ballads, but I guess that didn't bother me too much. There's a lot of emotion in Stephanie Beatriz's voice, I think. She has a more nasally tone here for sure, but she's warm and real and raw. And that moment when she gets on the roof and sings, "I am ready! Come on, I'm ready!" I get chills.
It's more nasally and less belly because she's a child, Elsa is an adult so I don't think they really are comparable. Mirabel's vocals I feel were more believable and relatable for her character
@@jackwhitbread4583 To be fair though, I wonder if that's just how Stephanie Beatriz sounds. Mirabel's voice actress is an adult, and from what I've heard of her singing and speaking outside the film, she does use more of a nasally tone. So while I will agree that the tone lends itself well to the character, I think the real reason might just have more to do with the actors' voices.
I think judging these songs/singers outside the context of the film’s narrative misses the mark. A good song in a film reveals something about the character and advances the narrative. I don’t know much about Stephanie Beatriz’ singing background but I think this song appropriately conveys Mirabel’s pent up pain and childhood trauma. A triumphant vocal as in Let it Go or plaintive yearning like Part or Your World would not work here.
She appeared in the heights so she has worked with Lin before plus he had a cameo on Brooklyn 99 so they are good friends. She is an accomplished singer, actor as well as a trained dancer. Having heard how good her voice is on in the heights it's clear to me this performance was character driven and not a testament to just how well she can belt out a song. Mirabel is only 15 years old and honestly I feel this is much more emotional than it would have been had she been really stretching her vocal chords. Also wanted to add that she suffers with very severe astigmatism and is actually legally blind, she has achieved extraordinary things regardless of this. Watch brooklyn 99, she is an absolute badass
I believe in an interview Lin said that he set this song specifically in 3/4th time rather than 4/4th time like the rest of the songs to show Mirabel’s disconnect from the rest of her family
In my opinion this isn’t the Let it Go for Encanto, it’s What Else Can I Do. Those songs are very thematically similar, all about the character letting go and embracing who they really are.
What amuses me about this analysis is it’s picking apart how Mirabel’s performance isn’t where it could be. And I can only conclude that that’s on purpose because that perfectly describes her character at this point in the story. Not good enough, feeling unheard and undervalued. But her being tight and closed up makes absolutely perfect sense for where she is in her story. Context matters, and it feels like LMM is several steps ahead of us here.
Think it's important to add that Elsa is an adult , in the first Frozen movie she is 21 years old while Mirabel is very much still a child being that she is only 15 years old. Honestly I feel like it was a good move on Lin's part and it made Mirabel more relatable and believable
As many have said; I think the imperfections are what makes this song so perfect. I think both showcase their characters extremely well; which is why they can't be judged the same. It's like judging two different people expecting them to have the same shine.
I think this was my favorite song in the entire movie. I've genuinely never related to a Disney song as much as I have this. I love the way Mirabel sounds like she's practically bursting at the seams. She's holding in her tears but just barely. Like when you're trying to talk to someone about something personal and your voice starts to crack because you're on the verge of crying.
Well… to be fair: Let it Go was written for Idina Menzel, a powerhouse in belty high tone explosive songs. This song was written for someone who doesn’t really have that range, so it doesn’t go as grand as Let It Go. She naturally has a lower, nasal voice. Essentially, we are comparing a song made specifically for a professional theatrical singer and one made for an actress who happens to have a nice voice. Not a good comparison. I’ll just say that the moment she goes “I’m ready cmon I’m ready, I’ve been patient and steadfast and steady” it gives me chills. Mostly because I didn’t expect her to go that high and powerful at that moment.
I love EVERYTHING about Mirabel’s tone when singing this song-you can just FEEL the tears she’s trying to hold back and the desperation and pain and hopelessness. I cry every time I hear this song without fail.
It's kind of a rude thing to say, but I feel like you completely misunderstood the point of this song( It's a character moment, and a low one at that. This isn't Let it go, Mirabelle isn't realising anything new about herself, she doesn't get any new powers. She is kind of stuck in place with her life and other's opinions on her, and she is desperate to get out of this. But through this song she realises that she simply can't change her situation with just a wish, and... kind of gives up. That's why the song is repetitive in some places and doesn't resolve in big finale: because the issue isn't resolved. It's still here, and as long as it's there, Mirabelle can't fully let go and move on, so the whole song feels uncomfortably tense
the nasal aspect of Mirabel's voice is intentional. I think they wanted her voice to sound moe realistic for a 15 year old, being that the average 15-year-old is not going to be a broadway-style singer. It makes the song and the movie even moe brilliant tbh. Great video though!
The point is that her vocals are suppose to fit the character, Mirabel. It doesn't need to be all like Elsa Let It Go and crazy. It's nice with something new and not all extreme.
Waiting on a Miracle and Let it Go has a different context, you can see that clearly wherein Elsa was smiling since she's finally free like she has nothing to hide anymore. Whereas Mirabel is still waiting on a miracle, it's an emotional song and an emotional song well not all songs need to have that belting part. The climax of the song is just fine and the fact that a lot of us cried in this part says it all.
The thing about this performance that always comes to mind every time I hear it, is that Stephanie Beatriz was in labour as she was recording it (I’m guessing the early stages as really she should have been on her way to a hospital), and I don’t know if it’s just me, but that real life emotion just bleeds in to the emotion of the performance.
@@CliffRichardFan2001 I’m embarrassed to say that outside of Brooklyn 99 I didn’t really know much about Stephanie Beatriz before watching Encanto (I live in the UK, there’s only so much US stuff that gets exported over). But, from ‘The Family Madrigal’ until the end my jaw was on the floor. She is such an amazing talent and an all round wonderful human being. And her singing in Encanto was able to bring me to tears of both laughter and emphatic sadness.
Fun fact: the part of "open your eyes, open your eyes, open your eyes, I would move the mountains" was all done in one breath. Bonus: this is the only song done in 3/4 cadence, all the rest are in 4/4. Lin-Manuel said it was to make a point that she out of order with the rest of the family
The thing is when it come to the songs I feel like Lin wants us to relate to these characters and not worry about how loud they can sing it’s all about the meaning of the song
I think this song is placed very well, with the held back motif, as Mirabel herself is held back by her desire to have a gift, and held back in her potential by her family. It's not a 'let it go' where she would grow, more closed but also so mucb more unsure of how or what to achieve.
If you watch the making of Encanto videos you will see this song was meant to be an anti Disney Princess song. The character isn’t a perfect “princess” so neither is her hero song. There is a perfect ballad in the movie, it’s in Spanish but the language doesn’t matter, it’s so emotional you know what it’s saying. Lin wrote that one because it fit the grandparents story and he wanted to make us all cry (Dos Orguguitas).
I know you were looking for something big and epic, but personally this song moved me much more than “let it go“ ever did. And I do love that song, “let it go“. The lyrics and the delivery struck a chord with me. To the point where I was surprised you had any criticism of it. See you love you!
I feel like this song was more held back on purpose. In this scene she's feeling so many things, hurt, angry, frustrated, forgotten and i feel like the tone chosen for the song really gets that across
I thought it was a nice touch that "Open your eyes" was sung directly to Abuela. I think the whole movie was really a quest story about earning the respect of the matriarch.
I wouldn’t say this is the “Let It Go” of Encanto. The 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 “LIG” of this movie is Isabela’s “What Else Can I do?”. This is bc both characters, Elsa and Isabela, are doing the same thing (don’t know if you’ve watched Encanto yet, so I don’t wanna spoil too much😅).
I think hearing it in context would make more sense that there isn’t a huge build and send off. It isn’t her “coming into herself” type moment like let it go was for frozen. She’s still in her feelings and feeling like she has something to prove, she didn’t have that full break through so she doesn’t get to that point with the music either. I feel like it was a very deliberate choice.
I can really hear Lin-Manuel Miranda in this song too… thats “Can’t control the morning rain or a hurricane” is sooo him. And in one of the last songs “we see how bright you burn-“ really sounds like him as well. I just love how much he shines through like that.
I ABSOLUTELY agree with your assessment. I kept waiting for that song to open up and grow and was felt left really wanting. I mean, there are so many bits and pieces of it that are incredibly beautiful and they just dont quiet get the support they need.
I believe that's was the purpose they did that, the reason the song didn't open up and grow was to reflect Mirabel's character and how she feels being the outcast for not having powers. She feels constrained, so the music reflected that.
I think some of these vocal and song choices are going to make a lot more sense once you watch the entire movie in order. I personally think they fit for the character and what is happening in her life and how she is feeling at this point in the story.
i think you are a bit too harsh on this song. I wouldn't compare it to let it go. let it go has a trained broadway singer doing the singing. While Indina did a fantastic job as elsa we don't really relate to elsa nearly as much as mirabel. Stephanie has a normal vocal range that the average person can hit while Indina's pitch would take a lot of training to hit. if you watch the movie you will see there is build up to the song. Mirabel is an outcast in her family and shes portraying how hurt she is in the song you can hear the pain in her voice so there's no need to belt it's a song about being hurt and wanting to fit in with her family. The same with burn. in burn it's not meant to be belty it's another hurt song and the actors need to be actors first and portray that emotion over having the perfect range.
Yeah I tend to agree while I like those songs where people really belt it out. That kind of song wouldn't actually fit here. Because the character is battling with too much insecurity and anxiety (from being compared to her sisters and cousins) for her to let loose and belt the song out at this point. I think in fact this is why so many who struggle with these things relate to this song because you can see she's not confident enough to literally "Let it Go" yet. If they were to make a sequel with songs in it. That's where I'd be thinking a belting song from her would make sense, as she's growing in confidence. And there's so much possibility with the story for sequels or maybe a Disney animated series to happen.
@@Loulizabeth 100% agree. If theres a sequal there will be room for bigger songs but this movie had the most relatable songs in a disney movie I've ever heard.
@@toriacrouse2449 I think she was referring to the scenes and the whole vibe of the song, it can be easily compared to let it go the “I want to do” kind of song
@@RAnonimo its not a huge i want song though its more of a im hurting. Which has fans relating. The want is to please her family so it's type of song. Let it go was letting go of fear. She said she wants belts but this song isn't meant for belts. shes hurting and looking for validation. Shes not looking for a big journey she just wants to be seen by her abuela like the rest of the family.
I'd be interested in your thoughts on the voice placement she uses here vs. what she's using in All Of You, at the end, where I feel like she's using a more forward, open placement, as if she's using the placement to mark Mirabel's growth not only internally but in her relationships with her family. I also think keeping the same note on "open your eyes" was deliberate because she's pleading with her abuela over and over again to just take a moment to see Mirabel, and there's a "stuck" emotion behind it that's being communicated there.
A think a big reason this i gravitate towards this song so much is because Stephanie Beatriz was actually having contractions/in labour while recording this song, she was having her miracle. Which I think is beautiful.
I love seeing your facial expressions at about 1:20. Even though you haven’t seen the movie you recognize the separation she feels from her family as they gather for a photo!
I would argue that the level of nasal-ness in Mirabel’s voice is indicative of where she is in her (and the hero’s) journey. The songs at the beginning of the movie are more nasally because the conflict of Mirabel’s character is still present. This song has a heavy nasal sound, probably the most of the movie’s tracks, because it’s addressing the heart of Mirabel’s conflict and what’s preventing her from reaching her potential (or at least desired potential for her). She’s the only one in her family without a gift and therefore is left out and held back (like the full sound in her voice) by a sense of inferiority and by her abuela (perhaps unintentionally) singling her out as the weak and flawed link since she can’t perform miracles like the rest of her family. That nasal sound gets stronger as the conflict grows. But in the end, as the conflict gets resolved, the sound of her voice is opened up and gets fuller
I definitely feel that this song is so dynamic and moving. Let It Go is beautiful, but even so, I don’t think it touches Waiting on a Miracle when it comes to the touching, moving, emotional, human element. This song makes me tear up every time! The first time I heard Let It Go I was confused about all the hype.
4:02 Can’t lie every time you did the closed nasal talk/singing it cracked me up 😂👏 Another great reaction, I liked that you kept it real! Not fake liking something just to not get the viewers upset.
I think it fits. Mirabel is very self- contained, and like the one person in the family that is holding everything together. Once she comes into her power, the dysfunctional family dynamic isn't working anymore and they build it on a new healthier foundation.
You stated that you didn't listen to the songs from Encanto in order so I want to point that Waiting On A Miracle! is an "answer song" to the opening song The Family Madrigal in the first song Mirabel sings about how everyone in the Family Madrigal is "Fantasical and Magical" and how great is it to be part of the Family, in Waiting On A Miracle she exclaims "I'm Not Fine." and expresses how she really feels.
Definitely not the 'Let It Go' of this movie, that honor goes to 'What Else Can I Do?', which I think absolutely blew Let It Go away. At least in lyrical content and story payout. Elsa sang an empowering song and then... hid in her room, except this time it was a castle. Maybe if she'd had Anna there to encourage her like Mirabel did Isabelle, they'd have had a lot less drama and heartache.
Let it go was a song about finding herself and its positive. This one is not, she's admitting she doesn't know who she is or what she's supposed to do making it a sad song. That's why it didn't build up as much as let it go, this one was supposed to leave a deeper longing ending as she herself is longing for acceptance.
This song reminds me of "Legally Blonde" from Legally Blonde the musical...I don't think it was meant to be an "I Want Song" They gave us "What Else Can I Do" instead as the uplifting inspirational song...
even though i partially agree with the lin manuel part (and you were able to put into words why it took me a bit more of time to love burn) i do really think in THIS case it was the better option. mirabel is the only "common" person of the family, seen as the weakest link in the chain. so it makes a lot of sense for her character to be more average as a singer. having a let it go time would break that perception of mediocrity (despite mirabel is everything but mediocre)
Fun fact about Encanto. During the song “waiting on a miracle” the voice actress for Mirabel went into labor and didn’t tell anyone until she finished the song.
Y’all should watch the Encanto cast guessing Disney songs on IGN’s TH-cam channel. There’s this moment (only a few seconds) where Stephanie sings a song from The Little Mermaid. It’s an entirely different side of her voice. She continues to surprise
Waiting on a Miracle isn't the Let it Go of Enchanto, that's What Else Can I Do. Let it Go is a song about freedom that's been attained while Waiting on a Miracle is about being trapped and wishing to be free.
In the defense of "Burn" in Hamilton, there's actually an original version called "First Burn", and that one was more belty and loud, but they changed it to the current version, and i think I know why and i think it was for the best. The current version makes Eliza sound more sad, tired, and just utterly done with Hamilton, like she's so tired she doesn't even want to spend energy getting extremely angry at him, which I think was the preferred emotion Lin wanted Eliza to portray. She's withdrawing from the situation ("I'm erasing myself from the narrative") because she's just done. If they went with "First Burn" it would've made her sound more vengeful and hateful about the situation. While the angry cheated-on spouse is a justifiable reaction, exploding in anger isn't a part of Eliza's gentle character in my opinion, so "First Burn" would've felt kind of out of place, so they changed it to sound more soft. But both are honestly really good and are both favorites of mine
I feel like maybe for this song, she had that tight back placement kinda to show like she was holding back from crying, emphasizing that she's not fine
I think we were supposed to feel a little let down and wanting for more because that's how Meirbel felt when she didn't get her gift and how she's feeling now.
Fun fact: Stephanie Beatriz, the voice actor for Maribel, well this was the final song she recorded for the film...and she was NINE MONTHS PREGNANT at the time! Her baby was born 48 hours later! Might be why she wasn't able to really get that full range, what with her lungs all squished from baby taking up real estate 😂
I've been singing since I was 4 and as a singer I love your videos you catch things that I've just never picked up in down to the smallest details it helps a lot. I've been trying to use it on my own voice so thank you
I love this song😌 I always thought that the nasal sort of singing went with her emotions like holding back her tears (I hope u know what I mean it's hard to describe) then at the end she belts the last high note and it's like she calmed down and is able to actually do something and she's not gonna cry she's going to go forward with her chin held high. Also I would of disliked it if it had 'stronger' vocals than it does, I love all the songs in this film as they are. They're more relatable and more realistic ect than old Disney films (tho I love a lot of their music too) expecially knowing what this movie is about and stuff it just makes more sense. Each character has a style which I definitely like since they aren't making their voice sound different than their normal voice and it goes with their character (if that makes sense) anyway good video but I do disagree with many of your points but each to your own😁
I think the reason it’s not more of a belt is because when she still has that tight “nasal” voice we can hear how broken she feels through her voice but also trying to sound like she’s fine.
Stephanie Beatriz was over 9 months pregnant and in active labor while she was recording this. She didn’t tell anyone until afterwards. She had her baby girl 2 days later. 💕🦋✨
I actually agree with you about LMM. That said - I do love It's Quiet Uptown. It breaks my heart. Especially when you hear the Kelly Clarkson cover. There is also something called 'First Burn' which is a draft that didn't make the final cut for the show. Frankly, I think it's better than the version that was kept in the show. But apparently it was decided that it was 'too angry' or something, and it didn't fit with the way they wanted to portray Eliza. Now I need to go listen to those again.
I'm sure you've already seen it by now but for context in case you haven't, all of the family Madrigal got special abilities from a magical candle except for Mirabel. When she was Antonio's age, she had a ceremony too, but she did not receive a special ability, she was the only one in the family who did not get one. It made her sad because not only was her sister Isabella treated as the golden perfect child, but her abuela flat out neglected her and started treating her horribly after she did not get an ability I mean you see in this song they don't even invite her to be in the family photo
A bit of trivia about Stephanie Beatriz's singing in this song - she was VERY pregnant at the time, and was actually going into labor. She'd noticed the contractions that morning as she got to the studio, but didn't say anything because she "didn't want anyone to freak out". She successfully finished recording, went to the hospital, and gave birth to her daughter the next day. I can say from personal experience that the hormonal changes from pregnancy REALLY impacts your voice - my own singing range dropped almost a full octave from where I was, and now I sing low alto / contralto. I've no doubt she made good use of the contractions to add even more impact to Mirabel's barely-suppressed emotional pain, and it makes me empathize with her even more.
I agree about the progression. When I first listened to this I thought it was going to go further than it did because historically I feel that’s what Disney has always done. I have now watched this film so many times I don’t even notice anymore and it just goes with the tone and character. But that first time I was a bit like ‘oh, ok’
Where Frozen has Let It Go and I completely agree with you with this song and Mirandas writing. Frozen lacked character depth while Miranda focuses on character and connection and story a bit better. This song however grows on you, the vulnerability of her hopes and feeling overlooked. This movie will always be so popular because it is so well rounded, beautiful, and a real tear jerker. But yes, it doesn’t have the anchor song, but 7, 8 wonderful songs that we’ll hear in 20 years and still remember every word
imo the way the songs are sung in this movie are very intentional so idk if there’s anything i would ‘fix’ necessarily, especially since stephanie beatriz herself is so insanely talented and versatile with her voice if you look into her past work, so the style she’s singing in probably isn’t solely due to her own limitations as much as staying true to the character of mirabel herself. i think making it ‘perfect’ or ‘more satisfying’ would take away some of the nuance that goes into how each character sings their songs since a lot of it (in context) holds metaphors and arguably represents their character development. imo the music in this movie is an absolute game changer for disney, i hope they keep going down this kind of musical theatre route because this level of storytelling through song meshes soooo well. not to mention lin-manuel miranda is a stupidly talented songwriter in general lol
I actually like that her voice doesn’t have a lot of growth to it in this song. As the story progresses, her voice changes and grows more open. It reflects her character growth. In this scene she’s still a bit more immature and self-centered (in terms of not seeing the pressures and issues other family members are facing).
I think you kinda missed the point , she wasn’t selfish for not seeing her family’s problems . They were HIDING their problem . She was the one who got them to open up. Its not her fault others were hiding it
Was agreeing until you said self centered. She had a whole song about her family to AVOID talking about herself. She is absolutely the opposite of a self centered character. None of the family seen eachothers struggles not just mirabel
@@yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee_ya5786 fr mirabel is like the least self centered person in that family she even had the courage to relive the worst night of her life just because she wanted to help antonio :(
Lin MAnuel said that this song does not sound like et it go because he wasnted to make Mirabel normal, not like a pro singer, just a human that sing about her feelings and in a range that people can feel like they can sing similar to her. The voice actress actually sings well and very differently. pñus it does sound like she is singing cause her voice sounds like that when she speaks. Thanks for the voice excercise I am going to use it, awesome as always
This is not the let it go of encanto though, that would be what else can I do! This is not letting go and learning to accept youself growing over former limitations, this is being sad as hell but trying so very hard to stay positiv, clinging to a hope you long lost but cant give up, for you just want to prove you are good enough one way or another. Every other character would cry and break down there, but she holds on to positivity for her family so it is pretty much the opposite of let it go!!!

You should react to the Spanish versions to Encanto Soundtrack, are really really good!!
I thought you would find it amusing, since you were talking about how the Mirabel actress nasalizes her character, this interview about Galaxy Quest (around 0:40s) talks about how the actor used "the seven resonators" to inform his alien species voice

Fun fact: Stephanie Beatriz, who played Mirabel was actually in Labor when she sang this song!

Luckily, my son is seven years old and always happy to step in for that part 😆
Honestly, every song in this movie is so lovingly crafted and my family can’t get enough of any of them. Each song lends itself beautifully to real emotions that everyone can relate to, and that’s why it’s my favorite Disney movie.
It also still sounds like mirabel as she’s singing which is hard for voice actors that sing to stay that character while singing.
THIS
wait who said this was the let it go of encanto?
Compared to "I want" songs from other Disney movies, this one is just not very strong.
I almost feel like it's supposed to show her feeling stuck in place or like she's been trying to say it over and over and over.
Agree 💯
Well part of your world is by Mencken,
And Miranda is something very different.
@@margicates553 * Alan Menken
It doesnt mean if she sings it higher it will make much better. The way she sang is so relatable and beautiful. The imperfection of it.
Maybe she likes higher note songs.. I don’t blame her I love songs with high notes
Your analysis is perfect. As an audience we genuinely feel their frustration, and it’s a clever bit of manipulation!
The fact that Stephanie recorded this song WITH CONTRACTIONS it’s just WOW!!
To those, who might have not catch that. She was in active labour while recording the song. Which makes it even more powerful if you think that she was really literally waiting for one of the greatest miracles to happen. Words "I am ready! Come on I'm ready!" and later "Bless me now" have a completely new power once you realise that!
WOWWWWW
@@ister2507she was not in active labor, she was just at the beginning of contractions and didn’t want to freak anyone out. Just saying that there is a difference
@NinaMenzel-r8y I'm not a doctor, but to my understanding beginning of contractions *is* active labour already.
@@NinaMenzel-r8yOK, I've checked, medically is an early labour.
There’s sentimental value to it being more “flat” supposedly and down to earth while Let It Go is the thing we all wish we could do but it’s super showy and over the top
yeah i think she shouldn’t say such things without actually watching the movie. the song is perfect and fits well.
YESSSS

"what else I can do "is more the "let it go "in terms of emotions
i personally didn’t mind that the song lacked a huge modulation or development with this song, the song and how she sings makes it feel like she’s trapped in the shadow she’s in, uncertain of when or even if she will get the chance to go beyond her limits and expand
I think this is one of those times where seeing the song in its full context helps a ton.
it's because she's really trying to transfer the emotion of mirabel being really upset and almost in tears which we do get more nasally when that happens, it's not as open or pretty, but fits the moment way more, she's very capable of sounding pretty and open, but it was an acting choice not to to keep it more emotionally impactful bc you won't sound pretty when you're so hurt
So he can do it.
omg i TOTALLY FORGOT about how far ill go! lin KILLED that soundtrack
Encanto songs resonated with me a lot more than any of the songs from Frozen. I’m more tied to it because of the message and the emotions.
Context matters, and it feels like LMM is several steps ahead of us here.
i think this song interpreted Mirabel’s character very well. It doesn’t have to compare to Elsa. Try watching the movie maybe :))
thank you omg
Yes!! Not to mention Beatriz recorded this song while in labor.
I love EVERYTHING about Mirabel’s tone when singing this song-you can just FEEL the tears she’s trying to hold back and the desperation and pain and hopelessness. I cry every time I hear this song without fail.
It's kind of a rude thing to say, but I feel like you completely misunderstood the point of this song(
It's a character moment, and a low one at that.
Its not rude its her opinion and her analysis
@@sixteen.candles.4644 I was saying that my statement was kinda rude
the nasal aspect of Mirabel's voice is intentional. I think they wanted her voice to sound moe realistic for a 15 year old, being that the average 15-year-old is not going to be a broadway-style singer. It makes the song and the movie even moe brilliant tbh. Great video though!
the imperfections in this song are what make the song so great, for the simple reason that it will stand out in the Disney I Want song compilations
It does!! It’s not just you.
I'd say it's more closed because her character is trying to hold back tears as she's singing
Contextualization is what makes this song perfect.
Fun Fact. When Stephanie Beatriz recorded this SHE WAS IN LABOUR with her first baby. 🤯
The repetitive "Open Your Eyes" is my fave part, it's so different!

Can’t lie every time you did the closed nasal talk/singing it cracked me up 😂👏
Another great reaction, I liked that you kept it real!
I screamed in the theater when I realized it's Rosa from Brooklyn Nine-Nine!!!
Let it go was a song about finding herself and its positive. This one is not, she's admitting she doesn't know who she is or what she's supposed to do making it a sad song. That's why it didn't build up as much as let it go, this one was supposed to leave a deeper longing ending as she herself is longing for acceptance.
This song reminds me of "Legally Blonde" from Legally Blonde the musical...I don't think it was meant to be an "I Want Song"
They gave us "What Else Can I Do" instead as the uplifting inspirational song...
I like it that the song shows Mirabel's need to be accepted by her Abuela. It's like "what do I have to do to get you to notice me?" It's brilliant.
i personally love the nasally sound to her voice
even though i partially agree with the lin manuel part (and you were able to put into words why it took me a bit more of time to love burn) i do really think in THIS case it was the better option. mirabel is the only "common" person of the family, seen as the weakest link in the chain. so it makes a lot of sense for her character to be more average as a singer. having a let it go time would break that perception of mediocrity (despite mirabel is everything but mediocre)
Fun fact about Encanto. During the song “waiting on a miracle” the voice actress for Mirabel went into labor and didn’t tell anyone until she finished the song.
Holy S that true talent
Y’all should watch the Encanto cast guessing Disney songs on IGN’s TH-cam channel. There’s this moment (only a few seconds) where Stephanie sings a song from The Little Mermaid. It’s an entirely different side of her voice. She continues to surprise
Totally agree with you!! Hearing it from a vocal coach feels so validating
MIRABEL DESERVES MORE
This song got a Lin's signature writing and I got a vibe of Breath from In the Height too
I feel like maybe for this song, she had that tight back placement kinda to show like she was holding back from crying, emphasizing that she's not fine
I think we were supposed to feel a little let down and wanting for more because that's how Meirbel felt when she didn't get her gift and how she's feeling now.
"WANTING WATING WANTING" that art was kinda funny
Fun fact: Stephanie Beatriz, the voice actor for Maribel, well this was the final song she recorded for the film...and she was NINE MONTHS PREGNANT at the time! Her baby was born 48 hours later! Might be why she wasn't able to really get that full range, what with her lungs all squished from baby taking up real estate 😂
I've been singing since I was 4 and as a singer I love your videos you catch things that I've just never picked up in down to the smallest details it helps a lot. I've been trying to use it on my own voice so thank you
we also need to keep in mind that the singer was in labor during the recording of this song
This song is the song to show how trapped she is. It’s more of the movie not a song.
Stephanie Beatriz was over 9 months pregnant and in active labor while she was recording this. She didn’t tell anyone until afterwards. She had her baby girl 2 days later. 💕🦋✨
She was literally waiting on a miracle!
Fun fact. The actress singing was actually in active labor when she was recording this song. What a perfect song
I like the character in her voice, she's not suppose to be perfect, the fact that it's not classic good singing is what makes it something special
I'm a fan of Lin and yet I could agree with your opinion, it does lack a bit open heart open chest yk hahahah. Love your reactions!
Then you may not like it that much because that big belting solo number this isn’t that type of movie I believe it’s more subdued on purpose
@@lilac3266 she hides her emotions from Antonio so he will have be happy , literally so kind
@@yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee_ya5786 fr mirabel is like the least self centered person in that family she even had the courage to relive the worst night of her life just because she wanted to help antonio :(
@@lilac3266 I know , she’ll do anything for her family even if it hurts her . How is that selfish ?
You need to listen to “What else can I do?” Beautiful voice and the music 🤩🤩❤️
