Lord Sugar is most famous for his popular TV show The Apprentice. Growing up on a council estate, the self-made billionaire has found huge success as a businessman. He has served as an apolitical Enterprise Champion to the UK government since 2009. Formerly a Labour supporter, Lord Sugar has been a vocal critic of Corbyn, even threatening to leave the country if Corbyn was elected.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

@@jessicahainesmusic Yeah I appreciate that and if you didn't have the opportunity to go to university, whether it be for financial reasons or that your school wasn't particularly good then I can understand your frustration. Oxford is a hard place to gain a place at and the workload is very intense so of course the people who come out the other side having gained a degree will be considered hard workers by employers. Admittedly, though, this clearly doesn't even nearly cover the number of exceptional people there are in the world and it is a shame when the only benchmark for employment is a degree.

He totally misunderstood the question at around 7 minutes in. The question is, If we want to live in a merit-based society (which we currently don't), why should we continue to allow wealth to be inherited rather than banning this clearly unfair and unearned inheritance wealth? Winning the lottery is different because it is consented gambling. Inherited wealth is not consented gambling. The question is clear and he has no answer. That said, I don't see why *he* would be the right person to ask such a question: such a question should be asked to politicians. He is just a businessman...

Sugar is genuine rags to riches, proper old school entrepreneur. Grew up in a fairly grim London council estate and was just as likely to be trapped there forever as he was to work his way out of it. He has said on the record that he knows how it could have gone wrong and that it very nearly did.
Richard Branson grew up in Blackheath to a wealthy and well educated family, went to a private school. Philip Green was born into a comfortable middle class home and got a £20k (in old money) loan to finance his business, then inherited the family business after the sudden death of his father.
We don't know much about Mike Ashley, but what we do know is he had a much more comfortable childhood than Sugar did. Ashley's parents still live in the family home which is apparently a bungalow in Buckinghamshire.

Every time the compute efficiency goes up the wider the market dynamic upon which people can capitalize of which much good work still yet could be done and profited on. So how can people say the market is dry. A lot of Chinese people would rather build an app and profit than go to far in industry it's a growing issue in China. The Question is where do you want to develop talents in not worrying about opportunity being scarce which it isn't and with the right business head it almost never is. If your stuck find an issue with a cause that you think you can solve and see if you can earn a living from that. You can't tell me there are no problems in the world that need improvement.

Does he mean it's a moral problem some people just get lucky or some rich kids are living a decadent life? Or perhaps the questioner means it's a problem of equality? Though poorly framed, the question about inheritance was legitimate, and it was clear the young man was asking a deeper question. The young man was essentially asking is it wrong that a significant proportion of "entrepreneurs" inherited money and is this symptomatic of a broken system. Of course lord sugar told this young man to sit down because he the poster boy of this meritocracy myth .. the young man wasn't suggesting we expropriate their wealth(though personally i believe in higher inheritance taxes) but merely pointing out that we still have social mobility issues. (look at price of average startup company in america most folk will never have those sort of funds and its wrong/immoral that people by virtue of money they inherited have opportunities others don't to be entrepreneurs). also his claims about labours dealing with antisemitism are stupid he clearly has no understanding of the NEC process and believes anything media says.

Lord Sugar came across as quite ill informed, dismissive, blunt, rude, slightly deaf (or not listening!) n rambling ..
The quota question was daft n but he eventually got it n never answered it ..
Silly questions from from many of the students of Oxford Uni but Lady who asked about his Judaism has great norks !

He cuts through BS. If he’s blunt it’s because he was being answered a dumb question.

The guy is a lord now. He is giving a talk at Oxford. Can he not at least make the effort to speak correct English.

Do you know what being a lord is and the role they play in our society? You don’t have a clue, has hasn’t had to change for anyone or anything and he’s still successful and he won’t start now; you should try it, I bet people look straight through you
