I always appreciate when Tom provides a mainstream vehicle review and wish he would provide a greater mix of them. I know professional car reviewers review vehicles provided by manufacturers but its hard to put a lot of stock in a top level, optioned up vehicle. I will go out on a limb and say that most people won't be spending over $40K for their Rogue. I also think there is a great lesson from Tom's wife not knowing much about cars and yet her one comment about good visibility knocked it out of the park. Car reviewers (probably by virtue of testing so many vehicles each year) tend to focus on things that mean less for most buyers. Visibility, gas millage, reliability (yes that is still a thing) means more than 0-60, autonomous driving features, quick shifting transmissions. Tom is one of the best in the business so I appreciate his videos. Thanks.

So far 5,600 on our 22’ Rogue. The new Cvt is very responsive, and has the most traditional automatic feel that I’ve experienced. Can’t beat 30-33 city/mixed 36-41 highway!

I own the 2017.5 Rogue and tested the 22 Rogue while getting an oil change.
Its a LOT smoother than mine
      I have a 4 cylinder CVT at 170 HP, with 26 city/33 highway mpg, 175 Lb-Ft torque.
      The 2022 rogue has 201 HP, 225 Lb-Ft torque, 30 City, 37 hwy rated.
Of all the vehicles i know, i cant even recall a 3 cyclinder to exist. Yet the 3 cylinders have great acceleration and performance from my test drive experience. Coming from a rogue it feels awesome, yet for those who use traditional engines it might be an acquired taste for you guys.
Although I TRULY love this new rogue, i plan on running this rogue until it falls apart. I bought it brand new and enjoy every single mile that ONLY I HAVE PUT ON IT. (Less than 1% was by other drivers, such as valets letting a family member borrow it, etc)
One day I'll put an end to the myth of Nissana making bad engines. (I hope 😬)

Good luck, I can't trust a Nissan Product anymore that has a cvt. 2013 Sentra nearly killed me on the highway after the cvt randomly died with under 100,000k. I would definitely take a Tucson, CX5, or Rav4 over these.

Glad you got to make a road trip video - your trip to Japan a few years back was some of your best work. I don't know how much / how often you can manage that or if even a side-channel would be worth your time. But you have an eye with your videos that is a clear step above the "this button does this" crowd of car reviewers. I'm not all that interested in the Nissan personally, but you got me to watch over 20 minutes of it here and that would be enough for me to recommend people to have a look at it if they are in the market.

If it is all good we will picking it up Friday or Saturday! cannot wait! first trip will be from home (Airdrie, AB) to Vancouver then Kelowna and back to Airdrie! I still sceptical on the CVT and 3 cyl. but the ride on the test drive was so nice, smooth and the interior is so beautiful it can almost go against a Lexus! I hope it will be reliable for the next 5 years for us!?

Love the location shots. I've been to Bend a few times, kayaked on Lake Bachelor, and loved it all. Your wife's input is very telling as most people don't know all the specifics of the cars they drive but simply judge them by their comfort levels and amenities. As for great tacos, we have the best Fish Taco truck here in Napa. THE BEST! $4 and they are better than anything in northern CA. The Rogue simply is the best passenger car Nissan makes right now but their entire line-up is improving constantly. Hope they keep it up. I am disappointed with the new Z (the styling just isn't there), and the fact that the brand still uses CVTs. Hondas are decent but just that: decent. Great review!

Very nice video. I love when you get the family involved. Your wife is priceless with her utter disdain for the whole “video thing”. The reason you got such poor mileage to Bend is that you were climbing to 4,000+’. From 0’ in Seattle. I think Nissan did an excellent job with this model but the somewhat poor mileage in a FWD auto is surprising.
You lucked out with your concert. Ours was postponed (in Maupin) when the crew contracted Covid. No surprise seeing the superspreaders under the pianists feet in your video.

  • @malcolmar

Great review. The fact your wife could not tell a difference between this engine and a traditional powerplant speaks volumes. I also like the fact that as a turbo this car runs on regular fuel and not the more expensive premium or high octane fuel. Three cylinders got my attention with the GR Yaris and the upcoming GR Corolla. My only concern is longevity. I know I am in the minority since I tend to keep my cars for a few years but I guess only time will tell with how durable these engines are. As with any new tech, we know there are inherent teething issues but if Nissan offers the same warranty on this engine as they do their other power plants that can be reassuring. Again well done and that concert in the mountains was amazing. I will definitely have to check that out myself. 42 grand is a little steep for this car but this looks like a quality vehicle. That price looks like it is knocking on the door of what the new Toyota Crown will be going for and I have been very impressed with what I have seen with the Crown and by default, you get that Toyota reliability. Just stepping back and seeing the quality of vehicles we are getting is very impressive.

I agree with your concerns and I hope Nissan didn’t screw up reliability or engine robustness. But Vtec was new too some time ago and now all manufacturers have it.
As for the Nissan CVTs, it seems that the key for longevity is transmission oil drain and refills per manufacturer maintenance schedule (every 30k miles) with Nissan OEM fluid, don’t cut corners on that!

Nissan did variable valve timing before honda, which was called N- VTC , Nissan was the first Japanese to use variable timing control (VTC) in the 3.0 liter engine (VG30DE) in 1986, Honda brought a more advance variable timing control called vtec in 1989. Nissan enhance the VTC to neo VVL develop by Autech a subsidiary of Nissan under Japanese CEO before Ghosn took helm of Nissan as CEO. Which birth the SR16VE and the SR20VE engines. @@khronin hey, you do not know me so, all you saying is total nonsense, and I have past through many cars to know all about Toyotas, Honda and Nissans, long before you, and I can clearly say that without bias owning a Honda Accord currently and my education background as engineer (mechanical, electronic and electrical), also let me have basic of understanding how this machines work.
You clearly wrote " Honda is way more reliable and had the Vtec in racing form for years ", nobody force you to wrote that, but your comment is bias and based on your opinion without facts to, back up, because there are many B16 and SR16, around to gather data, and both engines have been reliable, so how is Honda vtech more reliable? You are butt hurt because someone correct you with your bias utterance, putting forth your opinion, and I know you have never driven the SR16VE N1 which are hand crafted engines, so you can say what ever you want, I have seen both engines at paly have you?
I do not need a you tube channel, The post is about Nissan VC-T and the question pose was about Nissan new 1.5 VC-T engine or CVT, which one would fail first, which VC-T is variable compression ratio with turbo, which is total different from valve timing (VTC) which is controlling the open and closing of valves, not about Honda Vtech or how does it compare to other makers, also nobody ask about if Honda was more reliable. What ever you are claiming that you did not do, that exactly what you are doing indirectly, that Honda has been doing this for years, as If they are the only ones.
However you argument turn out to be way off because VCT and VCR are not the same, you own a lot of performance cars, good for you, but actually go learn how they operate before commenting.

Pro Pilot assist yells at you after 10 seconds of hands off the steering wheel? That seems worse than most of the lower-end driver assist systems out there. My wife's Hyundai Palisade will let you keep your hands off the wheel indefinitely as long as it senses you are paying attention with your eyes. It also does an outstanding job keeping the vehicle centered in the lane and taking sharp curves without any driver input. I did a 2 hour drive in it, thru some twisting canyons in UT and I touched the wheel maybe 5 times total in 2 hours.

Looks like a great family option that should be on everyone's shopping list. Well featured, nice ride and well priced. Regarding fuel economy calculations, modern ECUs know precisely how much fuel is being used as the fuel/air mixture on today's vehicles is a masterclass of precision, especially with today's emission requirements, fuel economy standards and especially so on a variable compression turbo engine like this. Filling up the tank until it clicks is nowhere near as accurate. The ECU is likely accurate to within a few milliliters of fuel per tank.

    • @jeffer1101
      @jeffer1101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DrivenCarReviews For sure, I get it. However, the ECU should be the most accurate thing you can use if you want (despite what some naysayers online say). If you want, you can reset the fuel economy gauge when you get the vehicle, then make note of what it says at the end of your time with it. That should be a good reflection of its fuel consumption. Of course, that's only relative to how it was driven by you during your time with it. Things like temperature, altitude, quality of fuel, how you are driving it and the driving conditions as a whole all play into fuel economy, so they should really be taken as a guide, not gospel. The good thing I've seen from you is you tend to drive the vehicles like most normal people do (you don't hypermile it, but also don't floor it constantly). It always bothered me to see some reviewers drive a vehicle like they stole it, then berate it for poor fuel economy. :)

Also, you shouldn't fill your fuel tank up the top of the nozzle (where it would essentially spill out if you kept going) as it can damage the emissions systems in the fuel tank (filters, etc). Also, depending on the grade of where you are parked at the station, that may also affect how much fuel you can get into the tank.

That new powertrain was what convinced me, it drives great and gets great gas mileage. Cooled seats, actual roof rails, and HD Radio was what I wanted them to add to the Platinum trim. Otherwise happy with mine, with the exception of the Dunlop tires mine came with - they're atrocious on wet conditions and wear life leaves a lot to be desired. Hope they release an off-road edition one with the actual roof rails and water-resistant seats in the future.

7:10 Time to trade-in the wifey! The variable compression turbo is the coolest part of the new Rogue! I've heard of fake ones where they just leave the valves open a little longer or whatever, but who would have thought we'd have the technology to actually vary the compression quickly on demand, and that much torque out of only three cylinders is quite amazing, especially since it feels lag free.

Tom, Come on man! Not fair that my wife is out of town, and what do you do? Go to a burger joint and your wife talks about how great it is (how did you get her on camera for that long?)! Now I have burger addiction symptoms 🍔...
Been awhile since I commented. Thanks partially to your advocacy of hybrids and pure electrics, I now am not really interested in exclusive ICE vehicles anymore (just happened to click on this one). I've always been into fuel economy, but you've help push me over the edge. I see exhaust pipes now and think "tons of CO2."
Over the last year I sold the 1992 Honda Civic VX I'd had for 25 years. I couldn't afford a full blown electric - they're just too expensive - but I did go half-way by buying a 2012 Toyota Prius V. I love just about everything about it: 40-44 mpg, room and comfort, and the ergonomics. The only real complaint is the buzzy engine and transmission when under hard acceleration.
Based on your reviews as well as others, I want to get a new or gently - used Ford Maverick hybrid for my wife on our 25th wedding anniversary in November 2023. I think even Evil Twin will approve of that.
Keep up the consistent good work! No one on TH-cam makes better use of viewer time than you do.

There's a bit of irony that the Rogue is sold in other countries as the X-Trail, which is presumably it's original name, and it comes as a 'E-Power' hybrid. So it's the US version Rogue that gets the less techy power train.

I've had my '22 Rogue for a few months, have noticed an irritating "whirr" noise from under the hood, occurs after about 35 mph, not really noticeable after 60 or so due to wind/road noise. It is more noticeable upon letting off the gas from around 50 mph. Very annoying with no radio on, bearable with music on. I was wondering if anyone else with a '22 has this same "whirr" coming from under their hood? My dealership said it is just inherent to this turbo with this CVT. I didn't hear it till I had about 1K miles on it.

    • @tomdwyer4421

I tried a 23 out recently and did notice a faint whirr anytime moving forward. No noise when stopped. Loved the car but deciding if the noise is a deal breaker.

    • @ofcbob6391
      @ofcbob6391 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tomdwyer4421 Tom, unless you always drive with no radio on, you really won't notice it. I've actually become accustomed to it and even with my radio/music on low volume, I can't say that I hear the whirr from the turbo. I like the Rogue for so many good reasons. I am, however, having a concern about my AC temps being strange, sometimes having to dial it all the way down to "LO" to feel cold air, then I can dial it up to my comfortable 70 or so. I'll talk to my dealer's service dept soon about that issue.

Naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engines may use more gas and have less power, but they are extremely simple and reliable. They can last hundreds of thousands of miles with little repairs or maintenance. What Nissan Rogue should have just focused on is updating just the CVT to have a launch gear and make it a chain instead of a a flimsy steel belt. Make the CVT more durable like Toyota and Honda does... that's all I care about it simplicity and reliability.

I really love the new Rogue coming from a owner that has a 2015 Rogue. The new CVT is better seems now Nissan cars are getting better as improving not only looks but quality is a comeback which CVTS were made by Toyota maybe Jatco is doing something better. Love the blue exterior and peanut butter 🥜 interior looks nice as a 1.5 L engine seems better overall recommend this car but Consumer Reports doesn't rate it for some reason guess of CVT not sure!
