OK, English version sounds like James Bond while this version sounds like something out of Lupin III or a detective flick. Both are good in a different way.
The Japanese game has the same intro song as the North American game. It's supposed to evoke the feel of a 60's Bond intro, alluding to the game's setting and subject matter. However, this version is just a fun little Jazzy take on the song, not meant to be the actual theme for the game. Both versions achieved what they set out to do and they're both awesome. It's not a contest people...
Kojima is a Hollywood movie buff, he knows what he wants in his game. Everything he did in the MGS games were deliberate, he has a good taste in music.
This version is sang by Akiko Wada who has a couple nicknames, one of which being "The Boss" due to her role in a previous film in the 70s. Seems like a perfect fit, heh
Akiko was actually plagued by rumors that she was a cross dressing man early in her career - but her biggest secret only turned out to be that she was Korean, born in Japan and passing as fully Japanese until 2005.

Even though I didn't understand a thing about what's being sung here, after hearing the Western version for like a thousand times I must say that this version has a fresh, unique and yet somewhat nostalgic feel to it. Also, maybe it's just me but every time I hear Janpanese people speak English I just can't help to have giggle up.
Definitely some Bond chords in there - The Consouls cover is less Bond and more funk - th-cam.com/video/klGKDhZGt-M/w-d-xo.html - while the 8-Bit Big Band version ramps up the Bond feel.
Both versions of this song are amazing, but this version is the suave cigarette-smoking, sunglasses-inside-wearing, hair-slicked-back mysterious twin brother of the US song.
I played snake eater for the first time when I was like 10 and this is so interesting to hear. This version of the song is so dope and such a unique twist on the version I’ve heard a hundred times. Pretty cool. This dudes voice is gangster as hell too.

@Xterminator333 the japanese game also uses the english version, so most japanese people would probably be more familiar with the english version honestly. This song is on the album only.

"It is not Japanese edition strictly. This is [korabo] of the Japanese singer, in the game we are not used. I'm not sure if you mean this song wasn't used in the Japanese version of MGS3, but instead still a bonus song? If so, that's quite interesting. Wonder if the Japanese copy of MGS3 still had the Snake Eater song from America then? :S
@Gamestoper007 this is actually just an arrangement done by the vocalist Wada Akiko. She has a really deep voice for a woman so it seems like a man singing. However, the original music is in English, just this is an arrangement kind of "inspired."
@clcproduction Converting really doesn't help, does it. "This [song] is not exactly what one may call a 'Japanese Version'. This is a collaboration between a Japanese singer, and is not used within the game itself, in both the American and Japanese versions." The Japanese shorten the word "collaboration" to "collabo" (Romaji: Ko-La-Bo) hence [korabo]. The Japanese singer is Akiko Wada, and she's a famous jazz(ish) singer.
Fun fact about MGS3, since everyone is bringing up Lupin in these comments: EVA was directly inspired by Fujiko Mine, which is really apparent when she spends the entire game using her sex appeal to her advantage and ends up betraying Big Boss to run off with the metaphorical stolen treasure in the ending
@200ike lol, That's the Japanese pronounciation of "I am still in a dreeeaaam, Snake Eater!". 3:30 - 3:41 (although it should be "Sunēku Ītā", not "Sunaku Ita".
