We recorded this a few weeks ago when the whole Covid 19 thing was just getting started and things were VERY uncertain. It's still a little crazy out there now but since we are considered "essential business" or "essential workers" we, or rather I have continued to work. I have been keeping distant from people as much as possible. My wife, who is in the health care industry, got laid off at the beginning of this so we have really been staying to our selves with the exception of being around our children and grand children. Her lay off had nothing to do with Coronavirus. It was due to some regulation that recently passed due to occupational therapy and the company she worked for had to cut several positions. This turned out to be a blessing for us since I didn't have to worry about her being around a bunch of sick people during all this. She can always find another job if she wants one. Even though I am still working people pretty much keep their distance for obvious reasons and I stay wiped down with hand sanitizer. I hope you're all staying as healthy and safe as we are.
This hive removal we did was at a property belonging to a friend from high school whom I haven't seen since then. We got to catch up on lost time over a bee swarm. The removal went smoothly enough but the hive was a little tougher to get to than I expected. I dropped one piece of comb down in the wall but with much stretching and contorting I was able to reach it and pull it out. The property owner had tried to kill the colony with Spectracide Wasp spray so although the colony was healthy I disposed of the combs. I don't want poisoned wax in my melter if I can help it. We recorded most of this job on my wife's Iphone 8 Plus but the phone would not allow an off load to either of our computers. We can view the videos on her phone but that's about all we can do with it so now I'm just counting it as lost footage. Maybe it caught Cophonavirus or Apple 19.
The car lot swarm was so big that I couldn't be sure it was an actual swarm. So due to time constraints and plentiful queens I just added a queen to them rather than going back later to check for one. I think it was an actual swarm though due to the fact there were no lost bees at the truck stop across the street. We collect bees at that truck stop you see in the background almost every year and we've yet to find any lost transport bees outside the truck stop property. No bees at the truck stop and only one cluster anywhere else says "swarm" to me.

I've seen the inside of your truck as well as what's in the back, and it's not just anybody who could go out to your truck and bring back exactly what you asked for. That's a true testament of knowing somebody as well as they know themselves. My swarm count is pretty pathetic at this stage of the game, only 13. I hear Schawee is up to over 30 already. I could be wrong. But I’m feeling like if I have bees invading my house my business my mailbox, that would be essential business. Call me a weenie but I would want someone right away to come and help me. You should count as a first responder!

A true professional! My landlord had a new window put in and the guys sawed crap in the house for framing, etc. Didn’t cover anything or cut boards outside. Nightmare of sawdust in my home. That kinda stuff irks me.

Yesterday I was trying to decide if a swarm had moved into one of my dead out hives, some of the bees had what looked like pollen on their heads and pollen dust in the entrance areas, in your promo I see why so I learned something. Weather is too iffy to go exploring into the hive. I got time. Y'all Stay Safe, Body and Mind...

That was a PILE of vees and your Sweetie deserves a nap. Mr. Ed must have a snoop app that he sneaked on your phone to let him know when bees are around you so he can disrupt the festivities! Maybe someday I'll move to the country but until then, your videos provide a way for me to enjoy the bees from a far.

Holy cow that was "not" a baby swarm!! But I do got a question tho... What do you figure the percentage of bee loss through the vacuum? I don't know so that's why I ask. But it's the only good way to capture them.. an on the cut out?? That was a new one ( them playing hide-and-seek with you) also?? Lock down SUCKS!! Michigan is getting extremely rigid! Thankfully I'm ah ridge runner an am only am 5 minutes from Ohio an 7 minutes from Indiana.. but it's like crazy!! But like a good little obedient flower!! I been staying home except to make a food run. Can't work so?? Spending my days inside the woodshop making screen bee bottoms and new bee tops.. was told mowing the lawn is not an ""essential"" the governor ""governess"" can kiss my ass the nearest neighbor to me is a half a mile any directions.. lol yep this old dinosaur is a rebel at heart..
Losses through any properly set up vac are low. This vac is incredibly gentle on the bees.
@@628DirtRooster Thanks 👍 So I am assume a 15 gallon regular shop vac would work if I restricted the out let to drop the cfm air flow down reducing the vacuum? Or would they get stuck on the filter?

@@628DirtRooster I went in in Mandeville and then jumped in the company truck and went over there. Was there 2 to 3 times a week for quite a few months. After Deep Water Horizon, a ton, or TONS of our equipment was stacked and Chouest owns that old Ingalls Shipyard. So we stored our stuff there. From 30K lbs. generators to 80K Lbs. A-frames and 100K lbs. winches. So we needed a lot of space and some heavy lift cranes. Wouldn't even think about fitting in Mandeville or down in Galliano.

But seriously, what did they expect....
Same thing happened in Oregon and Washington, they did a shelter in place and the beaches and trails were packed, so they closed everything. National Forests in Washington, Oregon, and parts of California are closed until at least 30 September. Just no way to do social distancing with the crowds, plus put a huge potential strain on small town resources in case of accidents.

How do you introduce a queen to a possibly laying worker hive? And how do you know if it's a laying worker hive? I didn't see any larva in the entire colony of any kind. I did have some closed cells of brood and drones. The drones were the only ones in a good pattern. The brood is spread out on several frames with mainly honey and just a little brood with only one frame with a good amount of brood laid. I've already ordered a marked queen just waiting for her to get here.

I've heard of getting queens delivered, but that swarm was going above and beyond. Bees mailing themselves away, whatever will they do next? Should have gotten some tiny postage stamps; they seemed to be better behaved than some swarms you've caught!

Most of the mail boxes I deal with have little to no issues I may have to lean out the door on some but if I had a bunch of bees I would roll up the window and not deliver.

Swarms and residential cutouts will probably be classed as an essential public service for public safety reasons

Hey Randy during that swarm capture did the wind cause the bees to sting you while you were vacuuming them? I was wondering since other weather causes them to be more aggressive sometimes.
