We bought an 04 Tacoma with the 3.4 V6 at 185 k miles. At 250k miles I figured it was time to put on a timing belt, expecting that it had been done at least once in the first 185k miles. All parts date coded 04 and belt and water pump were still perfect. Now has 303k and running perfectly and doesn't use any oil between changes. I plan on running this for as long as I am driving.

Roof and hood had paint problems being parked for 18 years under a tree/ bird poop , sanded it down and rattle can rust oleum textured paint for 40 dollars. what a blessing, I'm 67 years 10:38 10:38 ars old, hopefully this will be the last vehicle I ever buy.... love your site, but not as much as my 2003 Highlander...

Six years later, I still have the thing because it just drives so well, and I still use it daily. Regular oil changes and normal wear and tear items and they run phenomenal. No timing belt to worry about either. I told my daughter she will have her CRV until she doesn’t want it anymore. She said as long as it runs she will never get rid of it. I do all of my maintenance so things are done right. My wife has a 2015 Toyota RAV4 with a 183,000 miles runs like a champ. My 2019 Toyota Rav4 transmission needs to be replaced at 125k miles (off warranty)!
Have done perfect maintenance, going to every 5k mile service appt, and only light use with no towing, no off-road. The transmission started making a faint whining noise that is gradually getting louder. The transmission still operates ok, but the Toyota Dealer service said that the transmission will eventually fail, and should be replaced. So, I'm stuck replacing the transmission off warranty. (Had 100k bumper-to-bumper warranty).
The purpose of my post is to caution people to be careful of automatically thinking that if you buy a Toyota, it will be reliable, and won't give you big repair bills if you run it over 100k miles. It will. Recommend being open-minded to other car makes for reliability.

Put 2k down financed 3k for 36 months, payed it off in a year and have owned it for 3 years now outright. Only 142k miles on it and still purrs like the day I bought it. Looking forward to another 100,000+ miles of no car payments!
When it finally runs into the ground I'll be getting a Rav 4 or 4 Runner. Already got $11k cash put aside in the "next car fund" and plan to buy it outright when the time comes. I'll never have a car payment again if I can help it!

Great point about Honda's timing belt in a 3.5L interference engine. Engineering malpractice. Belts are fine when valves don't meet pistons if/when they break. I was one of Honda's victims on a belt that failed 20k miles after replacement at ~100k, >$6,000 damage. "S.O.L." they said, "out of warranty". Third and last Honda purchase... EVER!

Looked at the timing belt and it was the original. Little old lady said I’ve never done the belt or wtr pump. lol lol. I’ve seen tundras and sequoia go 190,000 to 220,000 then wtr pump leaks then belt changed.

When it comes to the RAV4 AWD you really need to address the difference between the HYBRID (Prime or regular) version which uses gasoline for the front and EV for the back unlike the non-hybrid version. AWD does not equal AWD. You can also turn AWD on and off just like EV only for the Camry Hybrid.

If you have a Honda with an interference engine, even the older ones, if you changed it and the pump every 60-90k they were fine, in fact a lot of them were known to go 300k miles (the older Civics at least, and some of the older Accords, like from the late 80's / early 90's so as long as you kept up with the maintenance then they could last a long time). I think Honda did do away with the timing belt in the Civic at least in 2006 or 2007 (whenever it was redesigned to the more rounded body style). But even Toyota I think still has interference engines but they've pretty much gone away from timing belts and everything is chains so you really don't have to worry unless you maybe run out of oil or your oil pump dies and doesn't pump oil (basically the same sort of thing, but that will kill any car).

1999 v6, tensioner seized up and caused erratic random surging.
    150k on original timing belt.
Replaced tensioner with belt and no more surging and crack sound in the exhaust when accelerating during downshift.
Took almost 2 years to figure that out.
Scanner wouldn't give enough info to detect the issue.
