I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with Geoff Hurst a few years ago and he said Jimmy Greaves was very magnanimous to him and always very friendly after the World Cup. Great credit to Jimmy Greaves, who was an amazing player and for all of us who grew up watching Saint and Greavsie such a great fun face of football. RIP Jimmy. Missed by many.

I never really watched Saint and Greavies, only now becoming aware of what an amazing raconteur he was, about life, football and everything. I could listen to him for hours and he is so right, in this country we have the unpleasant and churlish trait of toppling and quickly forgetting heroes during their lifetime. The passing of this giant of a man puts the sad state of England (UK) at this time into sharp relief.
I must have been 7-10 years old. Saw Bobby playing for Fulham at Cardiff City. Actually went to see George Best but he didn't turn up.

This interview was from 1993. Sadly Jimmy had a stroke in 2015 and suffered paralysis and uses a wheelchair.

We do have a football museum in Manchester (Urbis ) . Not been to that one but went 3x when it was in Preston .It was an enjoyable few hours about the FA and the Football League , and England in particular . It was transferred to Manchester in 2010 .
The only player with a dedicated museum in England is Duncan Edwards in Dudley. I'm proud to be on the board of the Duncan Edwards Museum which is managed and created by my good friend Rose Cook Monk

Football used to be a contact sport
Ferocious tackle but that wasn’t uncommon from Moore. Dad regularly went to Upton Park from the late 50’s to the 80’s and said Bobby could regularly put it about when warranted. There was a lot more off the ball incidents back then..
Agree with Jim, we do not use our great sports people after they have retired enough, Jim, Bobby and a whole lot more could be utilised in to making this great United Kingdom of ours a lot better than we are now.
I lived a short distance from Upton park close to the spotted dog and regularly saw west ham players going for lunch, Bobby always had time for a little urchin calling him by his Christian name, I adored him.

I think it was in the 80's when he had that Sat show with Ian St John and it was a "Breath of fresh air"back then,nowadays it would be like scaling the Swiss Alps,the Punditry is so contrived and bland.
.But Jimmy always came a cross as a decent,"down to earth"intelligent human being, who just so happened to be the greatest goal scorer to come out of England.
.And I do hope Spurs has coughed up plenty of cash for him,in his present difficulties .If those players at the moment had a "Whip round"after a game,they could easily "drum up" 50 grand between them..Because it was the likes of Jimmy,Bobby moore and George Best that caught the eye and made the game we see today.

7:07 - Correct, and I would go as far to say that that the UK has difficulty in giving sport in general the recognition it deserves. Look at the number of movies, past and present, from the USA - of whatever genre - that use (gridiron) football, baseball, basketball or ice hockey as a major feature of the plot. The only internationally critically-acclaimed film in Britain featuring sport has been "This Sporting Life" (Rugby League).

There have been three deaths in football that have affected me Bobby Moore , Jimmy greaves and being a Watford supporter graham Taylor. Bobby Moore being the England captain in 66 and Jimmy greaves my boyhood hero and the late great Graham Taylor for what he done for my club he made us feel proud to be a Watford supporters

Beckenbauer is the greatest sweeper in the history of the game, and Bobby Moore us very high up the list, but the greatest pure defender of all time is Jose Santamaria - "the wall." He played as a central defender for most of his career, but was moved to left full-back for one match very late in his career, because he was still Real Madrid's best defender at age 37, and they needed him to do a man-marking job on George Best. Best said that this 37 year-old version of Santamaria, playing out of position and practically playing with the aid of a Zimmer-frame, was still the best defender he had ever played against. Santamaria gave Best absolutely nothing for the whole match.

Most of the comments here are about Bobby Moore and Jimmy Greaves, understandably so, but could I please mention Brian Dear, who is referred to just after the 5:00 mark in this clip. This guy had an astonishing strike rate at the clubs he played for in the 1962-69 period (West Ham, Brighton, Fulham), scoring more than one goal every two games. I saw him score twice for a relegation doomed Fulham side in a 3-2 defeat at Bolton in 1969. When he rejoined West Ham in 1970, he played just four more games without scoring, and then disappeared from professional football aged just 27. Anyone know what that was all about?

Beckenbauer and Moore were liberos and not defenders in the classical destructive sense. Scharzenbeck acted as Beckenbauer's foil in the same way that Jack Charlton did for Moore.
