    It is a process and it may seem long but when people learn this technique and get used to the procedure it becomes second nature and the results are satisfying. Some people may think that they could save time by just applying plastic filler to finish off the weld but they would probably find that in the long run it takes just as much time to do that procedure as opposed to the procedure you have just demonstrated. I used to do the same thing by trying to flatten or contouring the weld all at the same time and of course realized that I was making the surrounding metal thinner. This is good basic instruction to those of us who are interested in this type of fabrication.

    I just tig welded a corner panel on my roof and did exactly this today. I come in and see this video and I really enjoyed seeing it. I had a lot more hammer and dolly work I needed to do to stretch out the weld but overall it turned out nice. I have a couple pits but not bad.

    Xcellent tip of the part of the grinding disk to use. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. And you can see where you are grinding much better than with other techniques. I am definitely trying this next time in the shop.

    I have found if i use the wheel like you have explained, it is way too easy to gouge into the faces either side of the weld! I teach my apprentices to grind ACROSS the weld, carefully, of course, because you have a lot more time to react if you're touching the sides, and the 40 grit does not go as deep if you do slip because it is also cutting weld! Even more so on the inside, as the curve of your wheel more closely approximates the inside curve.

    Tubal, thanks very much for that- its perfect. Just one question, i dont use pneumatic tools as a rule, just more convenient, how does using electric tools affect the finishing process as outlined in the video? I assume they turn faster and thus a 36 grit electric takes more metal than a 36 grit pneumatic?

    • @BeAMetalFabricator
      @BeAMetalFabricator  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I would imagine, I don't use electric because an electric angle grinder is big, bulk, and heavy, it will throw off your accuracy. For best results I would advise to switch to pneumatic. Altho if your comfortable with the electric and your good at it, use what you got. The same technique applies. Good luck bro! Thanks for watching my videos!🙏

    Great video Tubal, excellent tips about having the weld higher, and using a small pneumatic grinder, I did a set of rocker panels ,which I built by hand on a pipe anvil I made ,for a 04 Jeep Liberty, struggled with welding 18 gauge to pop can metal, but figured out by starting in the heavier gauge, it didn’t blow out the thin 22g, but grinding made a mess cause all I had was the 4 1/2 inch angle grinder,but next investment , small grinder like the one you have, is it an ingersol Rand ?
    Thanks again for putting this video together for us! Always a pleasure to learn from you!Ricky👍🇨🇦

    "Tubal Cain" the name drove me crazy. I heard it before and couldn't shake it. Did I know him or meet him at one point??? Ah, growing up in a church! Tubalcain is the first blacksmith in the bible and a descendent of Cain (as in Abel & Cain, of the Adam and Eve clan). Either your parents were prophetic or you've pick an interesting name for yourself.

    I’m going to start by saying that I am NOT a body man… but I don’t understand why you wouldn’t start off by grinding perpendicular to the weld, especially on the inside of the panel, where the shape of the disk, more closely resembles the shape of the part. Why is this?

    • @BeAMetalFabricator
      @BeAMetalFabricator  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well mostly because I would end up grinding the metal on the sides of the weld and thinning it. The point is to just hit the weld ONLY as much as possible

  • @davidwilfong5820
    @davidwilfong5820 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well I guess if that's all you have for tools but the correct way is welding both sides and grind down the weldes than sand down the welds with the proper tools
