- The Lorax (2012) SYNOPSIS: Twelve-year-old Ted (Zac Efron) lives in a place virtually devoid of nature; no flowers or trees grow in the town of Thneedville. Ted would very much like to win the heart of Audrey (Taylor Swift), the girl of his dreams, but to do this, he must find that which she most desires: a Truffula tree. Maybe some of the fresh air escapes through open windows/doors and goes to the atmosphere, making it breathable enough? Since the whole town uses the bottled air, it would make sense. It would happen in a grand scale. I'm just throwing random thoughts here, it's a movie. Anything is possible in a movie.

This movie could have been great if they had gotten rid of Ted's plot, focused on the Once-ler and the Lorax's relationship a bit more, and rewritten it a few times
The Hyena Queen {I love Broppy} but then there wouldn't be the original story of fixing what they have caused, and it wouldn't have a good ending. Plus, it wouldn't have sparked the beautiful let it grow memes.

The story of Dr. Seuss is a cautionary story about not destroying the enviroment for greed. It focused on the Oncelander as his greed and obliviousness, topped with some actualy sensible arguments, caused the downfall of an entire forest of beautiful trees. This movie turned into a ferngully-esque story that focused entirely on the wrong character and sugar-coated a serious, depressing but important idea to the point where the moral was lost. Instead of making us think that WE might cause it, it made a bullshit villain so people can detach from the message they are supposed to see themselves reflected into it. I migyht be overanalizing it, but Seuss was no simple writer, specialy when it's about morals.
MrKlausbaudelaire Okay. And that's okay. But this wasn't some random evil villain. This was someone going from normal citizen of consumerism-ville (clearly, the Once-ler's Thneeds had built this village/fortress thing) to starting a business that exploits the pollution of the environment. This movie doesn't exactly focus solely on the moral that the original The Lorax book tells, it focuses more on the harm of consumerism and capitalism has on society (because now, whoever has the most money is in charge, and has the most power) and the media's manipulation and lies. That's the point it's making. It's taking the original concept and adding another argument on to it, putting it into perspective of our modern world. We already know about how the environment is being degraded. What we don't know is that sometimes, we are being lied to by business marketing strategies, or at least not everyone does.

yea, but it was so cantankerous and cliché, they completely lost the subtlety and simplicity for another ferngully ripoff. The thing about the villain is that it deviated from a subtle reflection of ourselves to a cut-out stereotype of unrealistic proportions. The Oncelander was a much more realistic version of the greedy enterpreneur. You have to see the dialogue he have with the Lorax, its actualy something that DIVIDES opinions, not your evil, despicable idiot, but someone with a point on his own thats actualy very plausible. Its just that the Lorax and the Oncelander were two extremes of the same line in the original story.
I suppose that makes a point? But O'Hare isn't a simple 'evil' character. No, well, he is, quite one-dimensional, but then so is the Once-ler, once you think about that. They did explore that side of possibilities that the Once-ler could've taken more in the movie.
Ok honestly Sy has to be the biggest fucking villain in the movie. I say that because when Sy starts to sing Let It Grow he knows that not only is he fired but the whole damn company is going with him because if they keep planting more and more trees the air gets clean by itself and O'Hare Air, the lifeblood of Thneedvilles economy is going to go out of bussiness and theres going to be a massive spike in unemployment and a market crash and a multitude of other problems

But if you’ve seen the movie, it used to be full of Truffla trees, but due to the Once-per started making Thneeds, he and his family was cutting down trees in order to make Thneeds, but the film ends where the once-ler had the last Truffla seed to plant it, and not make the same mistake he did.
It must have been a lot of work to practice the dancing, singing, and places for everyone. And its amazing that they do this everyday

Both the book and the movie(s) gave the same message in the end, so it's just a matter of if someone liked the movie or not. Personally I loved this movie and it changed up the original quite a bit. Fun to watch.

Lolno it was originally a cautionary tale about the greed of man, and there were so many great subtle things about it. This movie threw all of that away for corporate garbage.
It maybe both moral lessons are told at the flashback/story scenes the cutting of trees and greed for that green shirt guy that I forgot his name.

For a movie based off a book, this was actually really good. The moral in the book was "the last generations messed up the world and now you're pretty much screwed" where as the movie's moral was "the last generations messed up the world, now it's your job to fix it." which is a fairly exceptable change. Not to mention that this movie version is actually much creepier then the book, because it's just full of "too real" moments. Like everyone happy singing and dancing in a toxic world that they deem as "normal".
