  • In this video Jeff an Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer tells you how to conduct a personal training session. Your certification exam may have given you some knowledge, but putting it all into practice is another task all together and hopefully this video will help you make that leap!
    Four years ago Jeff mostly did In- Home Personal Training but over the course of time Jeff has had enough success to start his own personal training studio, as well as employ and train other personal trainers.
    If you have any concerns on being a solid trainer and making a good living as a trainer, Jeff will be your guide starting with this video in our training education series.
    The blueprint to client communication and session structure laid out in this video will help you succeed as a personal trainer, where so many others have failed.

    Personal training is a customer service based industry. The mental side of making the client feel positive and enjoy their time with you is more important then the actual workout

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

      It’s definitely one of the most important parts! People do tend to forget that!

      @@F511BHS obviously not. But most qualified trainers can come up with appropriate workouts, proper form, rest periods, progressive overload, etc. what sets you apart is clever conversation….
      For example, During sessions I’ve learned to write down in my note pad Topics of conversation, so I can fill rest periods with good convo. Write down notes of what they tell you about their personal life. So you can bring it up later. Keep an excel sheet of each client with things like when is their birthday, hobbies, favorite foods, etc. it all helps build report and helps you gain those long-term relationships.

      @@F511BHS no.
      But: if you've managed to make your client feel good and made them enjoy the time WHILE keeping good form and reasonable intensity (that will vary from person to person).
      If you can combine both, that's when you've done an amazing job.

    Hello, i have been wondering, you do not change weight through the excercise? for example 1. set 10kg DB 2. set 12kg DB etc? If yes, how do you write it in your workout chart? Thx for your work, i have been looking a long time for informations like you give us :)

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good question! Thanks for the kind words too! Sometimes I will switch weights between sets and sometimes I won’t. It depends on the client. I typically just write the weights for the second set (if it’s a different weight) in a box close by on my workout chart.
      It just needs to look organized and neat enough so that I know what to do for the next session.

  • @throxen
    @throxen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    sometimes i can't find machine or bench to do some exercise even something alternative especially in covid situation and my question is when we train a client what we should do in situation like this. and second question is superset you count like two exercise or one?

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you just always need to be ready to
      move onto a different exercise in an environment like that. Be ready to think on
      your feet as you’re going through your session.
      A superset would be doing two exercises back to back like bench press followed by rows. I use them in most of my sessions!

    When you're a personal trainer and you're not constantly talking to a camera, How much do you keep talking or is it alright to have pauses. Or what is the lognest you would let a pause go on for? I've got a practical exam coming up, just wondering.

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pauses in the session are totally normal and should happen somewhat often. Sometimes I’ll be counting reps in my head and not saying anything. Other times I’ll just be watching form carefully, not saying anything.
      Don’t feel pressured to be constantly chatty!

  • @rj1565
    @rj1565 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    part of being a pt is updating on current knowledge right? static stretching before a workout regardless of being sport related or not puts your client at more of a risk, meaning you have failed to adhere to the principles of keeping the client healthy and safe correct?

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s definitely some logic in what you’re saying. That being said, doing static stretching before resistance training will be totally fine for almost any client, assuming that you’re doing things safely.
      Static stretching has shown to possibly make you very slightly weaker, if you do it right before a big lift. This is because our muscles work kind of like big rubber bands. This shouldn’t really matter for most clients, as they are no where near lifting maximally anyways.
      I wouldn’t do static stretching right before a strength focused day or with a client who is doing heavy lifting though.

    • @rj1565
      @rj1565 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation Ahh ok I understand now, thank you. I'm still learning so I was confused due to the fact some people are strict on this and some not so much. So it depends more on the client's ability, progress and focus?

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! It mostly depends on their goals and their experience level. Static stretches are probably fine for newer clients doing less intense sessions but maybe not as good to do right before a heavier session with a more advanced client

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely something to look out for! In her case it’s relatively minor but still something to be aware of. It’s something we’ve addressed since this session but I would avoid heavy loaded squats with a client who’s rounding at all. If she had squatted just a little bit less deep she may have been able to keep a flatter back as well.

    Jeff, I have been doing personal training for a few months. I have stable clients that come to my home studio.
    I recently started working at a local gym. I met with a potential client last night. Idk how to put this other than our personalities are too different and I felt like she was a bit condescending. To anyone else perhaps this may not be a reason to not work with someone, but I'm truly dreading the session. I would hate to say I don't want to take her because like I said, it's my first client at this gym and it wouldn't be a good look. What would your advice be?

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can be a tough situation! What I would do personally, is take them on if they wanted to be my client. There will always be people that you enjoy working with and people that you don’t enjoy working with. You can always try and make the best of a session by getting to know someone better and helping them achieve whatever goals they have.
      That being said, you do always have the option to not work with someone and tell them that you don’t think it will be a good fit. You might even be able to suggest a different trainer that might work better with them.

      You could still make time for it. You’ll certainly have less though. I would find out what the clients goals are. If extra flexibility and mobility is important to them I would still save a few mins at the end for it. If that’s not important, than I wouldn’t include too much stretching other than a quick dynamic warmup.
