I always loved the sound of a 12 string. Harrison and McGuinn were my idols in the 60s. I have two 12 string acoustics and this year I was finally able to buy a Rickenbacker 360-12. Excellent video Mark.
So you finally bought the 360. Did you get it new? Shoot me an email as I don't get notifications to responses within a thread (only if you have time of course). Mark
Roger McGuinn's Rickenbacker on "Eight Miles High" still carries me away. I'm a lapsed drummer but 12-string in the right hands reaches me in the same way the saxophone does. Sometimes, just one note and you find yourself moving just to keep up with your heart.
I love to hear that kind of passion for the 12 string from a drummer and the comparison to the sax or at least the experience is very cool. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Know that it is appreciated. Take care and be well. Mark
Hey FOH. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know. When I was a freshman in college, a random guy came into my room and said "I hear you play guitar, do you want to buy this for $175". It was a brand new custom legend (6 string). I subsequently wrote 1000s of songs on that guitar and probably used it for 500 gigs. I sold it in 2020 to a guy that I became close friends with. Two years ago I bought a 74 Glen Campbell 12-string. It's a great guitar but considering it had to compete with the Taylor 150e, the Taylor 451, and the Takamine GJ72, I sent it to my brother (he loves Ovations). I figure it's still in the family and it's getting played as much as it deserves. Someday when the time is right I'll upload a video of me unboxing the thing. The lady that sent it to me must have used a mile of that greenish brown packing tape. It took me 7 to 10 minutes to get it out of the damn box and that was with a utility knife with a sharp blade. LOL. Thanks so much for your time. I sincerely appreciate it. Please take care. Mark
I forgot to tell you guys the best part of my Ovation story. Back in 2002, I was helping my buddy do a remodel of an old couple's basement. IT was Charlie Kaman! I stupidly pronounced his name K-men. Mr. Kaman (like command without the D) promptly corrected me.
I have a Guild Starfire I-12. Love it! Your videos are one of the reasons I purchased it. Besides wanting to have a 12 string for the longest time! Thanks Mark!
Hey Brian. I'm glad you like it. Guild makes excellent guitars both here and overseas. Email me if you have a minute and let me know how the intonation is with the shared saddles. Thanks so much. Mark
Great invention Mark! It's been fun to see how your channel has evolved over these years and I must say the content has upheld high quality. Thanks for all the lessons, tips/trick, rock'n'roll lore and much more!
Thank you my friend. If it wasn't for the good people out there, this would have been a futile effort. The ability to really connect with so many people is a privilege that I don't take lightly. It can be a burden at times but the positive far outweighs the negative. Please take care and make it a great week. Mark
Hey Sal. Always great to hear from you. Getting comments from you and a few of the others that have taken this journey with me for over 5 years is cool. Everybody from the old crew played a part in making this happen. Have a great new year. Mark
Wow! What a collection you have!! I have an 80s era Norman. An anniversary gift from my wife for our first anniversary. More recently I purchased a beautiful Taylor, and a Gretsch electric 12-string, Unless I missed it, I am surprised you didn’t include ‘Norwegian Wood’. The first song I specifically learned for the 12-string. Great video as usual!
Hey Kato. This was just a sampling. I've done Norwegian Wood many times on here (at least 20). Here's a little taste of Beatles BEATLES REIMAGINED ON THE 12 STRING th-cam.com/video/yyNolUpGsb0/w-d-xo.html. Thanks so much checking out the video. Here's another more comprehensive video TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. I really appreciate your time. Please take care and be well. Mark
I like this! You showcase strictly 12-strings -- instead of by makes or solids, acoustics - etc. I have 6 12-strings so I appreciate your focus, research -- and song choices!🙂🙂
Hey Chad. Thank you for your time and comment. I cut out a chunk of the video in which I talk about my experience at NAMM the last two years. There were literally 15 to 20 12-string guitars at the show. Ukuleles outnumbered 12-strings 100 to 1. I don't know if it's a good thing that you and I are in the know or if we need to get more people to wake up. I hope you enjoy it. Please take care and enjoy the rest of your week. Mark
Hey Dr. Cox, much appreciated. I've done a couple of videos in which I talk to myself (just like real life!). In all seriousness, I've been using voice text lately and it brings to light the fact that I do talk to myself on occasion. It doesn't miss a thing. LOL. I'm grateful for your time time and kind words. Please take care. Mark
That means a lot to me. I'll tell you what, it's such a trip that my frustration 5 years ago led to it. It took about three years to go through the entire design and production phase. At one point I remarked to the engineer "I can't believe nobody else thought of this first". He said "Mark, the truth is that somebody probably did. The difference is that you called me!" I'm friends with my ex-wife now but for a while the thing she liked least about me was my total lack of follow through. I don't dare ask her but I wonder what she thinks about the fact that I'm now a youtuber and dare I say, inventor (I use both of those terms lightly and with a smile). Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. I sincerely appreciate it. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe NP. Learned a lot for my 12 string. -- always stealing licks like the rest of the 13,052 guitar pickers in Nashville ;~) Keep up the good work.
Certainly the best 12 string demo's I have seen on the net. Fabulous sounds these wonderful guitars make and have been made to sound so beautiful by many of the artist's featured here. Roger McGuinn was a great guitar player and his jangly Rickenbacker was the standout one for me. Wonderful sounding guitars whatever the make BUT the tuning was to many an aspiring guitarist, a great problem. Well done on this, beautifully played, and subbed.
Hey Paul. I'm really glad you like the Rok-Loks. It's funny, the idea came to me over four years ago and it took so long to get it all together that I've long stopped worrying about the bottom line. If I can get to a place where I can put a few thousand in my pocket each month I'll be grateful BUT what I'd really like to see is for Rok-Loks be become the new standard. They need a little tweaking but I think they are so much better than Schaller. People complain about the plastic occasionally but it's actually stronger than the die cast steel. Perception is reality though so I'm sure metal is in our future. :) Be well. Mark
Enjoying your video while playing my Guild Starfire 12. Been playing almost 50 years and didn't acquire a 12 string until I picked this up last year, partly inspired by watching your channel. I love it! It's a semi-hollow with split coils, so the variety of tones is amazing.
Guild makes great guitars. I really appreciate you letting me know that you've enjoyed my videos. They're a lot of work and after doing it for 5 years, it's a grind sometimes but comments like this really energize me and make me happy. Having the splits and the semi hollow makes a big difference. Some well placed compression and you can probably come pretty darn close to the classic Byrds sound. I'm grateful for your time and comment. Please take care and be well. Mark
Hey Mark. If you have time, shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com and let me know which one you got. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the 150e (great guitar) and last year I splurged and bought a 452. I have to say, the Mackenzie and Marr Algonquin gives it a serious run for its money (it's the inclusion of the Baggs Anthem pickup that puts it in the same league). The funny thing is that I would play the 452 on camera more if it wasn't for the fact that it's hard to film the guitar. The shiny black finish reflects everything. :)
Nice collection of 12 string classic's over 60 years, nicely played. I'm in my 70's now, just starting to feel some age, but this takes me back to my first band, 55 years ago! You got me pulling out my old 12 string 381!
Glad to see a new video from you. It reminded me that I need to show my 12 string some love. Gonna put some new strings on her, polish the frets, and oil the fretboard. Then I’ll take her for a spin and fall in love with her again. Look forward to seeing more videos from you soon.
This post brought back many good memories. Appreciate it, guys. Happy New Year. Although I'm just a hobbyist/composer I have a Dean semi-hollow and a lovely older Washburn Jumbo in bright maple w/solid spruce. The tones of both are sweet to my ear.
Hey Mark I cant tell Guitarists enough the 12 String adds so much color to most songs. I play one 75 percent of the time. The Rok Lok is an outstanding improvement on all the other strap locks on the market. I own 4 sets . They never fail. Happy New Year and I hope sales are soaring for the Rok Lok
Hey Al. You are one of about 10 people that I was consciously looking out for when I posted the video. I went dark for a while and I wanted to make sure I connected with the crew that helped me build this channel. I sincerely appreciate all the time and encouragement you've given me over the years. I also appreciate your promotion of the Rok-Lok. We have a new and improved version that should be ready for beta testing soon (one thing I've learned is that "soon" in business speak could mean a few months from now). I'd like to send you a set to try out when we get there. Shoot me an email at markaranalli@gmail.com if you're interested. Have a great day! Mark
I finally bought two year ago the 12 string electric semi hollow Vox Teardrop I wish I had since I was 16 years old. A real beauty and a fantastic sound.
Hey Lionel. What a fantastic first 12 string. the classic Vox Teardrop. I hope you're enjoying it. Hard to sit down and play I bet but who cares. Thanks so much for sharing and thanks for checking out the video. Take care and be well. Mark
Hey Tooth. Here's 50 more if you have a few. TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. Either way I appreciate you watching this one. Please take care and be well. Mark
Excellent video Mark. All songs were something to be heard, in their days. And is still fantastic music today! You’ve been an excellent mentor over the years. I so appreciate your work in teaching and showing what the 12 string can do. You’ve helped me improve greatly! When you figure it out, let us know what prevents people from getting a 12 string. They’re missing some of the best sounding music they’ve ever made.
I have an inexpensive Cort MR710-12 and am saving for an Ovation 12 like my late wife used to own (it was stolen years ago), to match my Ovation 6. I also have some neck blanks made up and one of them is going to end up a 12 string electric, I just haven't decided on the details yet. My Christmas present to myself was a solidbody nylon string 6 that's taking up most of my time ATM. I seldom comment, but I really enjoy your videos. Thank you and Bless.
Hi Mark, Currently own a Reverend 12-string that this channel motivated me to purchase. Like it more than even the Ric 660/12 that I briefly owned. Have loved 12 strings since my parents bought John Denver’s Prayers, Promises album circa ‘71… seeing John with that Guild acoustic 12 on the cover really did it for me. John was a great 12 string troubadour and the biggest entertainer in the world in the mid-70s! Also much love to my faves George, Roger, DonF.
Hey Michael. I really appreciate your email. When I first talked to Ken Haas, Reverend's founder and owner, he was so enthusiastic and readily sent me a demo model. About a year later, I ran into him at NAMM and told him that in sharing my true love for the guitar I believe I helped the cause (I wasn't boastful, I just wanted to let him know that a lot of people bought Airwave's on my recommendation). I don't know if I caught him on a bad day or if NAMM just wasn't the right time to connect with him but he totally blew me off and even scoffed at my assertion. I'd like to think it was just my poor timing on my part but he never reached out to me again. I still promote the guitar because I genuinely love it. I never asked for anything nor did I want anything other that to let him know that something positive came of it. I love it when JD's name comes up. He's the one soft rocker that even harder rocking guys are ok with. When it comes to the mellower side of rock, I've always been partial to Bread and America but Rocky Mountain High and Country Roads remain two of my all time favorite songs. Thanks so much for your time and comment. I hope you have a great rest of your week. Mark
Hey Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and participate in the chat today. This week is bad but next week is a great week to do something if you have time. Take care. Mark
As always, an excellent selection of 12 12-string songs, excellently played! Thanks, too, Mark, for the short info-bits on each song. Speaking of which, on _Sloop John B,_ The Byrds' recording wasn't the original; I believe that was the Kingston Trio, unless someone recorded it before them...oh, and of course, _Watchtower_ was by Dylan, whose version was good, but IMHO Jimi blew him away! As for 12-string ownership, I've got 3! A 1967 Harmony, a used Guild F-512 I bought in 1971 a year old, and a Vangoa from a couple years ago. And they're the only guitars I've ever owned. (I did learn on a borrowed 6-string, however.) Fred
As a 12-string players since the 2000s, I envy your early adoption of a truly underrated instrument (I mean that quite sincerely). Happy New Year to you to. I see the pup in your avatar. I have two Boston Terriers. They are the first two dogs I've ever owned. I got Molly as a puppy and she was so sweet that I got another puppy I named Buddy. Now they are two absolute terrors. They are gentle, loyal, and loving to my wife and I and bark and nip at everybody else including our kids. We even sent both of them away to a guy that is considered one of the best dog trainers in the south. Three weeks each at quite an expense. Even with diligent follow up on our part, they are who they are. :)
@8MinuteAxe Harpo is a classic sweet Shepherd. We don't have big numbers of Boston terriers in Australia but they are lovely, affable dogs. I did do training back in the day & one of my key principles was to train the owner ! I wish more people were as responsible & loving as you. A well trained dog is welcome everywhere, is not stressed & feels secure & happy. In fact there is a Boston terrier in a house we pass sometimes on walks that Harpo is always happy to greet. Forgive the tardiness of my reply but I am still recovering from a serious car accident - my left hand was badly damaged so playing a 12 string again is in the future as I do rehab & my hand heals - tedious but necessary. Woofs from Harpo !
Hey Dreyno. Your avatar cracked me up. Guild always gets it right. Isn't it funny how every good player that was a teen or adult in the 70s owned a guild at one point in time. Guild is highly rated yet probably underrated in that the name isn't mentioned along with Gibson, Fender, and Martin. Thanks for sharing and thanks for taking the time to watch my video and comment. I appreciate it. Have a great day! Mark
@ I was actually in the market for a Guild acoustic 6 string and randomly hit on the Starfire. I have a lot of guitars so I could never justify the price of a Rickenbacker. I had considered the Harley Benton but the wider neck made me unsure about it. The fact that the less expensive version of the Starfire had coil splits and a slim neck made me interested. It’s a lovely guitar. Fit, finish and set up were perfect. Feels lovely to play and the sound is very versatile. The avatar is in memory of our beloved husky who passed away. The good-est boy ever.
This was just a taste. I've done More than a Feeling at least 35 times on the channel. Here's my TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. More than a Feeling is way up there. :)
The first time I saw the Fab Four, (perhaps the best live Beatles tribute band) I was completely floored when they brought out the electric 12 string. Hearing the kick drum & cymbal crashes in a live room was a revelation, but when that 12 string sound filled the room I nearly wept. I have a very good stereo system at home, but in all these years never realized what audiences back in the 60s were exposed to.
Happy New Year Mark. May 2025 be the year to make the 12 string guitar the best guitar ever. I am happy to see you making guitar content again. I am currently playing my Taylor 150 CE in D standard and my Guild 2512 deluxe ce in C sharp standard. Have you ever played any 12 strings tuned down in C sharp standard?
Currently I’m down to two (2) 1978 Taylor 855s and a 1966 Epiphone FT-85. Sold my Rickenbacker 660/12 because I didn’t get along well with the wide, flat neck profile.
Let's keep this a secret, but if you really think about it, the Beatles played Ricks because they were inexpensive. When they finally got their hands on Gibsons, Fenders, Epiphones, and Gretsch, the Rics took a back seat. I've now owned two and it's just not worth it. I will probably go back to the well one more time but only because my business is a 12-string channel. LOL. The 855 is a HUGE sounding guitar. Does your FT-85 have the trapeze tailpiece? Shoot me a picture at markaranalli@gmail.com if you have time. I appreciate you taking the time to check out the video and comment. Have a great day! Mark
I front an acoustic band and have a Washburn 12-string that needed some work done on it. I bought it in the mid 1980's and am very excited to use this guitar on both my originals and covers we do. Love 12-strings. Brian in Las Vegas - Manzanita acoustic band. Thanks for the examples.
Hey Henry. That was the way I was gonna go several years ago when I was actually without one. Now I have quite a few but I'm sure the tele 12 plays better than most of mine. Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video. I appreciate it. Take care and be well. Mark
Thanks so much Charles. I got in my head a bit and got stuck in start. I had to fight through it but I think I'm where I need to be. Hopefully more to come this week. Take care and have a great week. Mark
Great episode! I have 3 12-strings, albeit they are all cheap: 70's era Epiphone acoustic, a Dan Electro, and a Firefly double neck. I like playing all of them. Suite Madame Blue by Styx sounds great.
Hey ZC. When I started learning the song, I looked for a good tutorial on YT and while there are a couple other well executed versions posted, none is faithful to the original. My own interpretation takes a few liberties but I'm happy with it and I think Roger would be ok with my interpretation. I was supposed to interview him back in September but it fell through and was rescheduled for January. At this point, I don't have anything on the books so sadly I don't see it happening anytime soon. Take care and be well. Mark
I just purchased a DANELECTRO DC59X12BK 12 string electric and it is scheduled to be delivered this Friday. I can hardly wait to have it in my hands. I will push it through my CRATE GFX-212T 120 Watt amp. This amp has both an effects side as well as a clean side. It has twin 12 inch speakers and believe the combination of the Dano and the CRATE will sound great together. I used to play an ALVAREZ 12 string acoustic with a Dean Markley sound hole pickup but the Dano will be my 1st true electric 12 string. I will be turning 71 this coming June. It is never too late to fulfill your musical desires. Rock On, Ronster
Great video Mark. Very well done…new Sub here! I played a Tacamine at a large guitar store a couple weeks ago and was amazed how good even I sounded. I may have to go get it.
I have a '60s Framus archtop, electric 12. In those days Bill Laurance was consulting and built the pickups, also doing the wiring design. The controls are curiously innovative, but the pickups are Fantastic. Trouble with this axe, is that I can not find long enough strings! Have fun!
I began playing guitar on an early 1960s 6 string flattop Kay in 1967. My uncle who was living in California pulled out a Martin 12 string right after that when we visited him and I was HOOKED big time on 12 strings. I couldn't afford a Martin so I kept pounding on that old Kay. In 1984 while in a pawn shop I came across a lawsuit Takamine. The moment I heard the first sound of the strings I was back to the day I heard my uncle's Martin. $200. was the price on the tag and I didn't quibble, it was sold. 41 years later and I still have it, no other guitar that I own ( Martin X series, Gretch 2622T/FS, Fender acoustic,...) are more enjoyable to play or listen to.
Love the examples of 12-string songs. I recently bought a Reverend electric 12- string like the one you have and I love it! I am working on TurnTurnTurn to play in my band. I also have and acoustic jumbo- body Alverez that I bought used, love that too.
Greetings from Rochester - home of Lou Gramm, The Great, Great House Of Guitars and so much more… 😂Of all the guitars I own (and don’t deserve) my Rickenbacker 360/12 is my for sure most favoritist 😁. The supreme gift from my Debi (sweetie for 53 years so far)😢. And because of the exquisite jangle it brought - and still brings - to the soundtrack of my life. I love ‘em all and some surely do other things better. But if I think of guitar music as Magic, I think of Ric first. BTW kids, if you’re still not ready enough to say Ricken-BACK-er, please call the company after hours and hear their answering message. Love the channel, all guitars and all guitar players. Happy New Year!
Saying that I like 12 strings is an understatement. I have had four 12 strings in the last 35 years. My first was an Alvarez D style. Second was a Hohner Tele. Third came the Martin d12-28. The fourth is a partscaster made from a Kramer neck and a Samick Tele body. At some point I would like to buy a solid body Rickenbacker, I just haven't found the right one yet.
Great video! My next bass is a Schector Stargazer 12 string bass. Been really digging Tom Peterson of Cheap Trick, Mike Inez of Pearl Jam, and of course Doug Pinnick of Kings X!
Hey Darren. If you have a few, email me at markaranalli@gmail.com and tell me more about the new rick. Is it the one with no lacquer on the fretboard? Unfortunately, threads within comments get lost (I don't get notifications). Thanks so much for your time. Mark
happy new year, mark! i hope you enjoyed a fine holiday season! someone just asked me the other day, how many 12ers did i own? i counted 4 - so far! i've the reverend, and the double-neck harley benton, and, an acoustic seagull and an acoustic double-neck ovation. they all sound great! and, i do have another on order, but, that's a 12 string bass - the schecter dug pinnick model haha! as always, love from canada!
Hey Mark! Been a while for me. Good to see you again. That Schecter 12 is killer, man! Love it. I have a Guild Starfire IV, but it's a 6. How's that Starfire 12 play? BTW, still jealous of your Reverend 12. Great music as always, Mark!
Hey James. It's pretty cool that I received three comments in a row from three long time followers of the channel. All of us played a role in this. There were many times when I had the f-its but kept going. 5 years and running. yeesh. So, the schecter is cool but I replaced the bridge with a 12 saddle bridge and I made the mistake of cutting the saddles myself. I made the string sets too far apart. Its so slight but I can feel it. Thanks for all of the positive energy. Happy New Year to you and your family. Mark
"Sunshine on 12 pieces of wire" -- what I said when I first heard George Harrison and Roger ("Jim") McGuinn behind a 12-string Rickenbacker. "Eight Miles High" sounded like Roger McGuinn's attempt at capturing the sound of a sitar. If that was his intention, he succeeded. Raga mixed with Folk/Rock -- "Eight Miles High." Many thanks, 8 Minute Axe for this amazing overview of the 12-string guitar in music! "Dance the Night Away" (Cream) is my favourite tune played on a 12-string guitar. I read that it was Cream's tribute to The Byrds ("Eight Miles High").
Hey Walter. I had no idea that "Dance the Night Away" is a 12-string. I've covered over 100 12-string songs on the channel and I've gone pretty deep but that's table stakes for me. Disraeli Gears is one of the first albums I ever owned. Great information. I'm very grateful for your time and comment. If you have a few minutes, you may enjoy this TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. Please take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend. Mark
Hey Weex. Check this one out, complete with Hole Hearted and may others TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. This video was just a taste of some of the good ones. If you don't have the time to watch the entire video, I believe Hole Hearted is #35. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and take care. Mark
As always first class and you present it in a humble manner. I will go back but I do not remember you providing tips on playing barre chords on a 12 string. I had my 12 string professionally set up at Hanover strings NH. I suppose I could try and have a luthier lower the action a bit more but I am really struggling the further down the neck I go. Perhaps I just do not have the hand strength.
My Dad purchased a 12 String Fender in the late 70’s. When I learned how to play guitar in 1983, I quickly switched from 6 string to his 12 string because of the many songs that featured the 12 string. It was louder, cooler and got me a lot of dates in the 80’s… especially once I learned Dead or Alive 😊. I still own that guitar… the oldest guitar in my collection
I've built two 12 strings, a Ric 381 copy that I sold years ago, and a Danelectro 12 copy that I still have. I admit I don't play them a lot but it is nice to have as a layering piece.
I have 10 guitars and the one I would sell last is the Danelectro 12 string. Thanks for the celebration, nice to see the Harley Benton DC-Custom II 612 in the show.
Hey Mark. I have three 12 strings: An Alvarez that I use for alternate tunings and slide. A nice, sweet sound. My kids had it fitted with an under saddle piezo. A 1965 Goya that had a trapeze tailpiece fitted sometime in the past. As old as it is, there is no hump at the bridge, and I keep it in standard tuning. Recently did some work on it, including a new nut, dressing frets and repairing cracks. Put in a 1960s soundhole pickup. Last, a Rickenbacker 360/12, my hot looking, blonde trophy guitar!
Hey Snommelp. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you hear that you've had a positive experience with it. I've promoted them for a few years and I've never asked them for a penny. I think they are a solid guitar for the money and the customer service is fantastic. The most impressive thing about them is the fact that they have asked me for improvement suggestions at least 10 times and they actually implemented a couple of them. Who would have thunk. Practice slowly, accurately, and in time. Sounds easy but it takes a lot of discipline. 15 minutes of full concentration 3 or 4 times a week and you'll wake up on January 8, 2026 as a hell of a player. :)
Love 12 strings. I currently own a Epiphone 1275 doubleneck, a Ovation doubleneck and a Danelectro electric 12 string (lovely). One day I will get myself a Rickenbacker 660 12 string.
Hey Rob. Heck yeah. Wings Over America. Awesome. I've covered Band on the Run in a few videos however I did forget to include it in this one TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. Thanks so much for your time and comment. Take care and be well. Mark
I love 12 string guitars, and I got into them during my busking days. The novelty of a 12 string was cool, and it had a bigger, richer sound. I currently have two 12 strings; an Alvarez acoustic and a Gretsch electric. My dream guitar is a Rickenbacker 381/12.
Got my first 12 stringer in 1964. A Framus acoustic. A good guitar for its day. Used it in bands for a while. Later sold it to Davey Johnstone who became Elton Johns long term guitarist and musical director. We both came from Edinburgh, Scotland. Was in touch with Davey a few years ago and told me he still has the guitar though long since retired. He told me the adage, never sell your first guitar especially a 12 stringer. 🙋♂️👏👏🏴
Hey Mike. What a fantastic story! Of course I know who Davey Johnstone is (one of the finest examples of a guitar player's guitar player who simply made every song better). I think it's great that you have a relationship with him and that he still has the guitar. The best part about being a youtuber is receiving stories like this. Whenever I get a gem like this it compels me to want to write the real history of rock n' roll told through the eyes of the fans who lived through it. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Enjoy the rest of your week and please take care. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe I have three different versions on my channel; all of them use a version of Em9 (up and down the neck) so that EMH can be also played on a six-string. Two of the versions alternate E natural minor melodies with Schoenberg 12-tone rows ( from E to E).
Two of my favorite guitars are my two 12-strings, (Martin acoustic electric & Rickenbacker electric). Certain songs absolutely explode sonically, and just can’t sound right without a 12-string. They’re a priceless investment!
I always enjoy a great guitar song. Especially on a 12-string guitar. Thank you for the great selection here. Watching players like Glen Campbell play William Tell Overture is just plain awesome. I can never play the instrument having polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, which is a part of McCune-Albright Syndrome. Played piano before even that became difficult.
Hey CJ. Since you mentioned it, you have to watch this if you have a minute. I promise it will be worth it. At least I think it will. CAN YOU SHRED ON A 12-STRING th-cam.com/video/JME6zAQFko8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I play the exact song you mention and combust. Thanks so much for your time . I'm sorry to hear about your condition. Is that what the guitarist Billy McLaughlin overcame? No, he had focal dystonia. Totally different. Please take care, be well, and stay healthy. Mark
'Everytime That You Walk In The Room' is another great 12 string tune. Gordon Lightfoot also had many great 12 string moments on his Gibson B-45. My best friend bought a Rickenbacker 360-12 in the late 80's and I used to love playing it with lots of distortion using a light bulb as a slide and clean it was breathtaking. And the now discontinued Jerry Jones 12's were and are just a marvel.
Wonderful renditions of those iconic 12-string classic rock tunes!! In my collection are two 12-strings-- my 2007 Rickenbacker 620/12 "Crestwave" body in Fireglo burst (just like the one on the cover of Tom Petty's "Damn The Torpedoes"... and I have a 1989 "H. Yairi" signature (Japanese luthier who crafted the Alvarez acoustics) 12-string acoustic that provides a rich, more full "voice" than the newer 12's due to the 25-yr-old, aged woods that Yairi's luthiers used in their business. Both are in beautiful condition. At 67, I play the acoustic much more than the Rick 620, so I'm thinking it's time to sell the Rickenbacker and give it a new life of usage.
Great video , thank you Mark. I have a Taylor 652 ce ( x- brace ) and an old Taylor 750 , both great guitars. I had a professional neck reset done on the 750, im still learning resets, I bought it used and the strap button on the back of it is this tiny thing someone put on. The next time I change strings I will change both strap buttons and order Rock Locks
I have a Guild JF30-12, circa 1998, made in Westerly, Rhode Island. Beautiful spruce top, natural maple sides and back (arched laminate back with no braces), ebony bridge and fingerboard, dual truss rods. Super nice mahogany neck with maple strip in it's center; great neck profile with low action, enjoyable to play! I string it with D'addario light gauge tuned to E standard. To play in D standard I'd use a higher gauge string set, otherwise the action would be Buzzville. Thanks for the variety of guitars!
Showing some love! My current 12-string is a Martin J16e, purchased new in 2021. It is one of the best I have owned or played. It is probably the most playable. The Jumbo shape gives a nice full tone and volume, which I find brighter than the Dreadnoughts, and rivalling the Guild 412. It came with a Fishman Matrix pickup that was initially very good, but failed after a year, producing random unexplained "snow" noise. After this occurred twice during paid gigs I had it removed and replaced with a K&K mini passive pickup. So just a point of reference, my workhorse 6 string is a 1973 Martin D-28, bought new.
Hope all is well with you. A nice look at the history of the 12-string guitar in rock music. It's an instrument that is so beautiful in its acoustic sound that it rivals the Celtic Harp. And that makes the electric version that much more special! I recently picked up a new 12-string, new to me...a 1985 Ovation Collector's Series Model No. 2985-1 12-string, the net says: "Elite model design, Super shallow bowl, single cutaway, available in Autumnburst (Honeyburst?P) finish, mfg. 1985 only. Only 715 were produced" I have a full bowl 12-string Ovation from the same time period...but over the years i have added a few pounds, and playing the one I have is like playing a guitar on the otherside of a counter...With the Super shallow bowl on the new one, I am able to play it normally. It sounds awesome and plays wonderfully. I"ve been playing a lot of ukulele lately, in fact, just got back from a jam session an hour out of town, but now I am playing a lot more 12-string as well. Fun times!
It is. I cut the bridge (I bought a 12 saddle bridge. I can't deal with the intonation issues. I cut the strings just slightly too far apart. I'm gonna need to either see if I can do it again or get new saddles.
@8MinuteAxe Intonation is a pain, take it from a guy who got a guitar neck off of ebay, necks are the one thing you shouldn't skip on. (Also, reminder about the gift card!)
I have a 12 string Aria acoustic guitar in sun burst color. I emailed Aria once to try to learn more about it, and they told me the model number was from the 1970s but before they kept detailed records. The neck is bowed a little, you can't really play above the 5th fret easily. But it sounds beautiful.
Hey Timothy. Aria is an interesting company. Their guitars were considered cheap in the 70s and 80s but people have come around and now many are sought after. Aria acoustics can be hit or miss. Some don't hold value and some are highly sought after. A little neck bow can probably be fixed. You can tune down a full step and you may have a little more "daylight". Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. Take care. Mark
I had a 12-string acoustic long ago, i really liked it. Sadly, it was stolen. Recently was considering getting another. Almost bought a double neck. Bought a 12-string simulator pedal instead. No need to swap guitars or playing position mid song. Works quite well with electric, less so running an acoustic through it.
So many Beatles songs of 64 featured that Rick 12. Two Zeppelin tracks that many don't know are 12s are Travelin' Riverside Blues and the rhythm guitar on When The Levee Breaks.
Hey, you are always fun. I see you came up with a Squire. Their string guide / tree is so aggressive, they bind. A longer hold down screw can add ~1/8" of height, with out interference. This will also let it 'float' in a more natural angle. With far less binding, tuning stability improves dramatically. A touch of lube is always good. Thanks Chris Thanks.
Hey Chris. Not sure if you saw my review of the guitar but I had to return it. It was a nightmare to intonate. Ultimately, even with the adjustable saddle on saddle design, it was so out I had to approximate. And boy did I have to stretch. I've had good luck with Squier overall but I certainly got a lemon that time. I've been having some binding issues with my Schecter but that's because yours truly cut the nut and saddle. :)
Too bad, I think your review is one of the reasons that I went for three of the things. I set them all to run flat at the 12th. Two came from Sweetwater, one from Fender. Only a few strings needed lowering at the nut, unusual for any Fender I have. Chords intonation in first position, is a priority in my set ups. Tempering is necessary on every guitar, ever in my hands. Only two fit me with out effort. A '70s Martin D 21. (not mine) And a G&L ASAT. I could not afford the D 21. The G&L pick ups hurt. Suck wish I kept it. Keep on keep'n' on. Thanks Chris
Nothing sounds like a 12. I'm on my second one, a first production run Seagull S-12. My first was a very cheap Carlos, looked good but just fell apart. The love of America's first album got me interested and other acoustic songs from that time. Great iconic samples, thanks for the memories.
I’m going to take the opportunity to rep my girl Miki Berenyi from Lush, who wasn’t the best guitarist of her time (not even the best guitarist in Lush), but the electric 12-string she played added SO MUCH to the signature sound of one of the flagship bands from the Shoegaze scene in the ‘90s and is still putting out those sweet tones in her current bands Piroshka and the Miki Berenyi Trio.
This is fantastic. I will certainly take the time to check her out and listen to some of the tunes. I'm always looking for new 12 string players (new to me I mean), especially those from the 90s and 2000s. Thanks so much for the tip and thanks for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time. Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend. Mark
A 12 is on my build list. One of these days . . . I had a semi-hollow body Framus a LONG time ago, but never really could figure out how to use it correctly.
Great video. I love your collection of guitars, each one has its own character and sound. I gotta ask tho, were you trolling us? lol cos you played the opening chords to a hard day’s night using the schecter rather than the rickenbacker with which it was played and also stairway to heaven in June 1970? Didn’t the song come out in 1971? Rock on man 🤘
I always loved the sound of a 12 string.
Mark
Proud owner of a 1990 cherry burst Ovation. 12-strings are the natural instruments of harmony. Really love your channel.
Hey, another Ovation fan!
I have a 90’s Ovation 1751. It stays in tune like no one’s business.
Mark
Hey brother, good to hear from you!
Mark
Good video. Glad to see you back in action!!!!
Keep me updated as to what's going on with you.
Replied on the wrong account. Padding the stats now. LOL
Excellent comeback dude. Love this video. The "pop up video" factoids alone are worth the price of admission. Thanks.
I intentionally put those in there. I'm glad you like them. Probably could have done a better job with the font!
Happy New Year Mark, great to see you back on 🎉
Hey Sal. Always great to hear from you. Getting comments from you and a few of the others that have taken this journey with me for over 5 years is cool. Everybody from the old crew played a part in making this happen. Have a great new year. Mark
Another GREAT video thanks Mark!
Wow! What a collection you have!! I have an 80s era Norman. An anniversary gift from my wife for our first anniversary.
More recently I purchased a beautiful Taylor, and a Gretsch electric 12-string,
Unless I missed it, I am surprised you didn’t include ‘Norwegian Wood’.
Excellent history of the 12 string in our favorite rock songs. I just got my first 12 string. Sounds amazing!
Mark
Thanks so much for the video! Love the double exposure effect.
Mark
Thanks! And I am a big fan of your Rock-Lock. Wroks great and easy-peasy, switch-o change-o!
Mark, happy to see you performing 12 string classics, love the sound of that chime. Rok-Loks still doing there job on my guitars. Rock on.
:) Be well. Mark
I just can't get over the gorgeous sound of the 12 string guitar, acoustic or electric! It hits me in my soul I guess!
Mark
Well done video. After selling a Taylor 12 string 25 year ago, I finally replaced it with another Taylor 12 string last year. So glad I did.
Mark
I love my danelectro 12 string. Thanks for the video. Half of these songs I never realized used a 12!
Mark
Great video!
Hey Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and participate in the chat today. This week is bad but next week is a great week to do something if you have time. Take care. Mark
@8MinuteAxe Yeah for sure man! I have some cool things in the works to tell you about.
(I did learn on a borrowed 6-string, however.)
Fred
Great video love the new axe! Can’t hide money 😊
As a 12 string player since the 1970's always admire your playing & envy your collection of instruments ! Happy New Year 🎉😊
As a 12-string players since the 2000s, I envy your early adoption of a truly underrated instrument (I mean that quite sincerely).
Bought my first 12 string before Christmas. A Guild Starfire 1. Love it. Nothing sounds like an electric 12 string.
Good list. Can’t believe you missed More Than a Feeling. Gonna go give Alice a listen.
This was just a taste. I've done More than a Feeling at least 35 times on the channel. Here's my TOP 50 12-STRING SONGS OF ALL TIME th-cam.com/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/w-d-xo.html. More than a Feeling is way up there. :)
Another good video! Great playing! Thanks! :)
Hey brother. So good to hear from you. Thanks for the loooog time support. it's great to be back! Mark
Simply AWESOME!!!! THANKS!!!
Mark
Another great one! 🎉😂🤠
Thanks Johnny. I can always count on you. Much appreciated.
I front an acoustic band and have a Washburn 12-string that needed some work done on it. I bought it in the mid 1980's and am very excited to use this guitar on both my originals and covers we do. Love 12-strings. Brian in Las Vegas - Manzanita acoustic band. Thanks for the examples.
i built a tele 12 from a "build it/finish it, yourself" kit off an auction site, $100. love it!..
Hey Henry. That was the way I was gonna go several years ago when I was actually without one. Now I have quite a few but I'm sure the tele 12 plays better than most of mine. Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video. I appreciate it. Take care and be well. Mark
Missed ya Mark! Great content as always!
No kidding about Eight Miles High. A solo completely in an another world from the blues-rock that overwhelmed the guitar until Thrash arrived.
Nicely done! Keep posting!
Thanks Maryann. I really appreciate you taking the time to check it out and I'm glad you liked it. Have a great week and please take care. Mark
I own a Framus 12 string (“Dix”) - 1972,
Wonderfully bright sound
You have persuaded me I need a 12 string. AAArgh!
I have the Squier Paranormal you used but in white, and last year finally got a Ric 360/12, with the newer 21 fret neck. Love them both.
Love 12 strings! I have an acoustic and am saving for an electric. I also have two Rok Loks! Highly recommended.
Mark
I hope you recut it and get it perfect for you ! Just take all the time you need 😊🎉😊🎉
Mark
@@8MinuteAxe - Thanks! Take care!
This channel makes me want a 12 string. Guess I need to start saving up.
Absolutely right! Maybe not for every song but they do add a unique nuance. I own 2.
You forgot whole hearted by extreme. Great video though!
Try out a Taylor 100 or 200 series when your in a shop
I got a Vangoa in an auction, one of the best choices I've made in my life. I just need to improve my skills to get the most out of it
Hey Snommelp.
Denny Laine used one on stage with Wings twin neck, featured for the Band On The Run song
Hey Rob.
Well done. Had a 12-string years ago. Can’t afford one now.
I play a 1971 Guild Jumbo 12 and a Gibby 1275. Love the sound of a 12
This summer i got a Dano 12 for under $500. I love it, solid make and excellent intonation and a fourth of the price of the ricky
I need one of those Rock Locks!
Many thanks for your kind words Mark. 🙋♂️🇬🇧
Fun times!
I'm a big 12 string fan. Even have my own 12 string electric as well!
That Schecter is a real beauty!
It is. I cut the bridge (I bought a 12 saddle bridge. I can't deal with the intonation issues. I cut the strings just slightly too far apart. I'm gonna need to either see if I can do it again or get new saddles.
Have at it, 12 strings are a compensation beast. You can tame it.
Take care. Mark
67 12 string firebird purchased from Baker Saunder 1971, Takamine 12
acousatic, Guild 12 Starfire
Echo & the Bunnymen's Killing Moon is a glaring omission imho
Never knew that ! But it is a lot of food for thought. Heavy Metal Music 🎶 where's the gumbo ❓
Thanks Chris
Thanks.
(not mine)
And a G&L ASAT. I could not afford the
D 21.
The G&L pick ups hurt. Suck wish I kept it.
Keep on keep'n' on.
Thanks Chris
I love 12 string guitar. Sounds so baroque.
What a great description. For sure. Baroque. Awesome. Thanks so much for checking out the video. Please take care and be well. Mark
Proud owner of a 1967 Rickenbacker 366-12 Convertible.
Best of both worlds. A six and a twelve string in one guitar.
One of these days . . . I had a semi-hollow body Framus a LONG time ago, but never really could figure out how to use it correctly.
that is one beautiful guitar you’re holding
Great video. I love your collection of guitars, each one has its own character and sound. I gotta ask tho, were you trolling us? lol cos you played the opening chords to a hard day’s night using the schecter rather than the rickenbacker with which it was played and also stairway to heaven in June 1970? Didn’t the song come out in 1971? Rock on man 🤘
