You said that you were glad to be alive for most of the rock n roll era…. Yep! Bought “Meet the Beatles” LP in 1964, and have been listening and playing ever since. We are lucky indeed!
Hey Jed. I was born in the greatest year for music in human history 1971. :). Lucky and privileged for sure. Thanks so much. I hope you have an amazing weekend. Mark
Hey Raymond. Funny, another person asked me the same question just a little while ago. I gave my brother the ovation and I sold the Guild, the Rick, and the Ibanez...but I bought a Taylor 562 so I believe I have 12 (13 if you count the double neck) I need to start selling some. Before my channel I only owned 5 guitars total. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a great day. Mark
Great job, great list of songs, and great collection of 12-strings. My one nit to pick is "Ticket to Ride" does not have a 12-string on it contrary to popular belief. It's George and John on their newly acquired blue Strats.
Nicely put. I am truly grateful that I'm alive during the Rock n Roll era. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time and support. Please take care and stay well. Mark
Hey Mark - that was great. I'd add: Pins and Needles/Needles and Pins, California Girls, Feel A Whole Lot Better (but you did add great Byrd songs. Nice job on 8 Miles High), Bells of Rhymney, and waaay too many Kottke stuff, and one of my favorite Beatle songs - You Can't Do That!
You Can't Do That and Polythene Pam both made my top 75 as did Seeger's version of the Bells of Rhymney. Needles and Pins was on my original list of about 110. California Girls wasn't on the list. California Girls and Help Me Rhonda and Hurricane are all tough to rank. All have a 12 string but would they really be considered 12 string songs enough to crack the top 50. Close but not quite in my opinion. Thanks for sharing yours. It's exactly as correct as mine! :). Take care and enjoy your weekend. Mark
Hard to argue with your choices. Great list. Would like to hear a few more Byrds songs, e.g. Bells of Rhymney. Love McGuinn’s work on his Rickenbacker 360/12.
So you want to be a Rock n' Roll star finished at 58. I was thinking of doing Pete Seeger's version of the Bells of Rhymney but this is my list and putting Pete Seeger up there just wouldn't represent my taste. McGuinn made magic with the Ric no doubt. Thanks so much. Have a great weekend. Mark
Roger McGuinn also plays an acoustic 7-string where I believe he double courses two strings--the third if I remember the Laurel Canyon movie correctly.

Hey, Mark! It's been a long time since I have had time to watch your videos. (Happy New Year!) I think you nailed the top 50 12-string songs of all time. You are so talented! I am very impressed by your ability to play all 50 songs -- even "Vaseline Machine Gun." Off-hand, I can't think of any significant omissions, except perhaps "It's Only Rock 'n Roll," which includes Ronnie Wood playing a 12-string guitar in the background. Thanks for including songs from Yes and Led Zeppelin!
Hey Kenneth! Great to hear from you. I hope you're doing well. I really appreciate you taking the time to check this one out and to send me your thoughts. Stay in touch. Mark
No doubt this is my best video this year. I never set the bar that high. lol. Seriously, I appreciate your time and comment. Have a great weekend. Mark
I really appreciate that. My favorite parts are all the bass parts I learned as I was sliding down the rabbit hole and decided to record my own backing tracks for many...and for many that I didn't even use. DOH.
Hi Mark. Been playing 12-strings since I was 14 - I'm 73 now! I've only got two - it looks like you've got two too - DOZEN! I have a Maton that I've had for 50 years that Tommy Emmanuel says sounds superb, and a 1982 Guild D212 like Tom Petty played on Free Fallin'. One thing that surprises me is that you only have a Guild Starfire in your collection! Guild 12's are THE definitive 12-strings that everyone else aspires to - many of the other makes sound weak compared to them. As for favorite 12-string songs, any of Gordon Lightfoot's music where he was playing his 12-string is incredible - he had an unbelievable rhythm that few others could achieve, especially on songs like Canadian Railroad Trilogy! And I'm sure you've seen John Butler's home studio version of Ocean - THAT'S mindblowing! Great selection though, and great playing!
What a great list! There were a few that I have always loved but either didn't realize (or had forgotten) were 12-strings, so it was also educational. Well chosen and well done, Mark!
I can really respect and appreciate all the time it took for you to record all the different songs for this video. Quite a few I didn't think of and will start to work on learning. Really enjoyable from beginning to end!
"Starship Trooper" and "And You And I" are inspired choices! I think that Steve Howe's 12-string work is some of the warmest ever recorded. I think that I would add some Genesis to the list though. They were known for their "twin 12-string" concept at one time. Rutherford and Anthony Phillips used to play together in arrangements that almost sounded like a harpsichord. That was eventually revisited on "Trick Of The Tail" after Peter Gabriel left. "Ripples" and "Entangled" are amazing.
The problem with putting a Genesis tune on a countdown like this is that the handful of songs that I could actually take a 15 second segment of and have it sound great are not really their best songs. The classics don't really have a singular part per se, at least not the ones I consider classics.
@@8MinuteAxe That makes sense. Those two tracks that I mentioned are quite beautiful, but there is no standout performance of 12 string. It's just a matter of how beautifully it is assimilated into those pieces. A piece like "Blood on the Rooftops", however has a featured guitar part - but it's classical not 12-string. Unlike a lot of progressive organizations, Genesis seemed to really frown upon overt displays of virtuosity.
Well.... missed the life stream, disappointed. Happy New Year everyone! Watched the replay, great video again. Can I see the correct answers to the Nashville tuning contest somewhere? Congratulations to those that won!
Great video! Awesome choice of songs, many of them my favourites. Suite Madame Blue is one of the songs that drove me to the 12-string guitar, followed by Give a Little Bit. But any of your choices are great tunes to play on 12-strings! Interesing...you put Starship Trooper, which was inspried by the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, a book about fighting an interstellar war with only slower than light ships that are subject the effects of time dilation due to travelling at near reletivistic speeds between the stars. It is followed by another science fiction oriented song, '39 by Queen. It is another song is also about the effects of time dilation from travelling closer to the speed of light. Interestingly it seems that it is a popular subject for rock musicians. Off the top of my head, I can name at least a three other songs about the same subject...Spirit of the Age by Hawkwind, Aldebaran by the Canadian band FM, and interstingly, a song by Enya about the same subject with the same title as the FM song, Aldebaran.
Hey Farrell. I LOVE Supertramp. Rudy is one of my all time favorite songs as is Crime of the Century. I've never been a huge fan of Give a Little Bit but I like it well enough and I realize its importance in the 12 string canon. Thanks so much for weighing in. Much appreciated. Mark
Great list. I would add Dance, Dance, Dance by The Beach Boys and their introduction to California Girls. By the Beatles, “I Call Your Name,” “You Can’t Do That,” and “Dizzy Miss Lizzie.”
You Can't Do That, I Feel Fine, and Polythene Pam just missed the cut. I've done I Call Your Name and several other Beatles tunes on the channel but I think there are too many other great songs as blasphemous as that is to say. LOL. Help Me, Rhonda is one of my all time favs but the 12 isn't important enough to justify it in my opinion. Thanks so much for your time. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe Glad you caught that Mark. When I saw you state (I Feel Fine ) I couldn't understand your choice. 8 Days a week oh yeah on the 12 string. I think after( If I needed Someone ) on Rubber Soul George never played his Ric 12 string on a Beatles song again.
Should have been higher but I had to consider significance in Rock history to some extent. I didn't want to pull a Cliff Clavin. :). Thanks so much for checking it out. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Mark
TRUE...the great rock n roll hey is over. Glad i grew up in mid 60's /70's..Im just getting back into 12 string, after few years. Thanks for reminding me of these great classics.
Hey M2T. I was 10 when MTV premiered and it seemed that the longer the decade went on, the worse the music got. Thankfully, in the 90s, I went to 100s of concerts. Some were great, some were awful but I always said yes when the opportunity arose. Looking back on it now what I wouldn't give for "80s type music" again and thank God I went to all of those concerts. If I'd have known I was witnessing Rock n' Roll's last gasp, I would have spent all of my time going to concerts. I also performed a few hundred concerts in the 90s. Although my songs and my band never hit the big time (never even any form of national attention actually), I couldn't be more grateful that I chose this is a career. Good luck on your current 12-string journey. Email me anytime at markaranalli@gmail.com if you need tabs, have questions, etc. I really appreciate you checking out the video. Please take care and have a great week. -Mark
i'm just going to sit back, and enjoy this one, mark! i apologize for being tardy with my [brief] holiday email to you - well, to you and everyone else I should've written to! 😊
Mark for the 5 or so on your list I didn't know. I would add( California Dreaming ), ( I Call Your Name ), (As Tears go By ) Stones version, ( Substitute ), and ( Every Picture Tells a Story) . Just my two cents worth.
California Dreamin' has no 12 string in the original even though John used one almost exclusively live. As Tears Go By actually made the top 50 but I lost the performance during editing so I quickly added another. Substitute, You Can't Do That, Polythene Pam, You Wear it Well, Crystal Ball, Xanadu, all just missed the cut.
Interesting Mark about California Dreaming not having a 12 on the recording. Of course I/we always played that with a 12 string. Also on Polythene Pam as you know was the last Beatles track with a 12 string on it. And it was John not George playing that part. Just a great start for your Channel to ring in the New Year. FYI the Holidays end after today which is my 62nd birthday lol. Happy Saturday the 6th from Wisconsin Mark @@8MinuteAxe
Cool List Mark. I missed this live. forgot about the hour time difference. Remember everyone he included how much he liked a song. I think I don't know maybe 5 or so you played .Did you play them in order of your of Favorvite songs personally? Mr. Tambourine man # 1 or was it how important the 12 string part stood out in the song., I found it very clever you played Georges Bass part on ( I've Just seen a Face ) A rare Beatle song with no actual Bass Guitar. Great job Mark and Happy New Year to you and your subscribers
Hey! Thanks so much for checking out the video. For this one I stuck to songs that were originally recorded with a 12 or were frequently played live with a 12. Here Comes the Sun sounds amazing on the 12 but was done on a six string. I actually opened my last video playing Here Comes the Sun on the 12 th-cam.com/video/98EdJ7gjG6E/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. You can never go wrong with the Beatles. Too good. Have a great weekend and take care. Mark
Well, now you're obviously gonna hafta do a top 1000 in this category. Good luck! The irony of this sort of list is that the more you include, the more songs seem to be missing. As soon as _Wild Horses_ came up, I immediately thought of _Lady Jane, As Tears Go By,_ and _Playing with Fire._ And when you started _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ I was anticipating _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ (which has a very striking, yet simple, 12-string part). Or _Mrs. Robinson,_ or _Fakin' It._ And the list goes on. . . I think that all this means is, it's a really good list, Mark. Thanks for dredging up so many wonderful memories. Fred
What is really cool about " More Than A Feeling " by Boston, is that it was sung by one of the best Vocalist, if not the best in Rock, Brad Delp! No one to date has been able to go from a high D to a high E and sustain it longer than him in the world of Rock! However, " Closer To The Heart " by Rush will remain my all time Favorite. Great Video Mark !
Hey Charles. I never saw Boston live but I did see Brad when he was performing with Beetlejuice (one of the best Beatles cover bands ever). The way he died was so sad. Charcoal grills in the bathroom. Oh man.
Selection @00:58. Don’t let me be misunderstood @1:08 That’s the Way @2:25. I’ve Seen a Face @2:38 Hazy Shade of Winter @3:31 My Sweet Lord @4:49 Horse with No Name
Hey Mark great list. Always love to hear the less popular bands like America and Zebra. One sour entry for me was #11…no way should that be 3 spots from Stairway😂
Honestly, when you start taking one song and pitting it against another in the rankings, it gets near impossible. I mean is Mama, I'm Coming Home really better than If I Needed Someone or All Along the Watchtower. Of course not. I get what you're saying for sure. An analogy would be when sales people say "for the price of a coffee.." Our brains don't work like that in the moment. At least mine doesn't. Excellent point though. for sure.
Excellent. And "Hazy Shade of Winter" is such a forgotten piece...great that you included that one. --I've found 1970s Guild F412s take things to a high level; hope you put your paws on one of those.
I really appreciate it Rodney. When I first started making 12 string videos.I came up with about 45 songs. Now I've got so many songs to choose from.I had to cut 25 classics. lots of great songs on the 12 string. Again. Thanks so much for the kind words and support. I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Take care and be well. MARK
Dude. Thanks. This is awesome. Also thanks for playing the Reverend 12 for us (and your review of it). It's one of the few electric 12's you can get as a lefty, so it's nice to know that it is an awesome axe.
I don't know if I completely agree with your list order, but thanks for showing your beautiful 12-string guitar collection. You truly have some gorgeous instruments there.
I'm in my seventies and you've taken me on a journey back to my youth ad back again. You deserve a good pat on the back as you've obviously put a lot of work into this.
What a complete delight your video was! I did not know that "Maggie May" had a 12-string on it. I heard that song, first, when starting to attend Junior College in the early 70's and have loved that song ever since I first heard it! I have a very basic but nice sounding Washburn 12-string that I purchased in the 1980's and now with re-forming my "Manzanita Acoustic Band" here in Las Vegas, I am having a stripped tuner repaired, new strings added and a pickup (in the hole variety) added to the guitar as well. Thanks again for a look at 12-string songs!!! - Brian
That was wonderful. You put a tremendous amount of work and effort in making this video. Kudos! I liked all of them although I must admit that some of those songs I haven't heard or know who recorded them. You "Eight Miles High" was very good.
hey Brian, I really appreciate that. I was astounded at how few 12 strings were at the name show this year. Let me know if you need any tabs. Everything is free. Shoot me an email at Markaranalli@gmail.com. I really appreciate you. Checking out the video. Enjoy the rest of your week. Mark
Stumbled upon this, you , just now , and watched it in it's entirety. Your song choices was what I wanted to hear , all good choices . However, I watched more to hear your 12 string mastery . Seeing all the different 12 strings you played was a bonus .

@@8MinuteAxe you did awesome job putting all together. Thank you wery much. No 31 is on ny fav list, ikke most of the acustic ones you picked. Gives motivation to keep on practicing.
Awesome list. this brought back a lot song memories I had forgotten. I would have thought a few more Leo Kottke songs, but then again he was never mainstream - but amazing 12 string. Thanks for the trip down 12 string lane!
Mark, this was a righteous list: besides the obvious ones, you didn’t forget to included stuff from Leo Kottke [how could any 12-string list possibly omit him?], the Animals, Question, America, If I needed someone, Walk Right In, 8 miles high. some of the younger crowd might not even know some of these songs, but the influence they had in their time was tremendous, so you gave them their proper place. The only omission I would mention would be As Tears Go By.
Hey Mark. A really eclectic selection. Can’t really argue with any of them. Good to see a couple of Steve Howe numbers. As a personal preference I’d have probably included one of Greg Lake’s numbers. Either “Still….You Turn Me On” or “C’est La Vie”. Love the Rok-Lok by the way.
Mark- you are truly King of the 12-String (next to Roger McGuinn). Thanks for your flawless performances, and for inspiring each of us to practice a little more… 👍
This is so much fun to watch. Love that your playing seems so precise and conscientious. As for omissions, I'm sure I saw a video of Heart going to town on a 12-string for "Silver Wheels" / "Crazy on You".
I continue to be grateful for how your videos enhance my appreciation of 12-string, especially electric, and inspire me to play it because it's beautiful, unique, and fun. One of the things I also appreciate is you demonstrating how widely 12-strings were used, and across a variety of genres. In the midst of all the dark and evil things in our society, inspiration and beauty are huge, and are gifts. Thanks, Mark, for illustrating and promoting the healing power of music!
For myself? Agree or not? That was a lot of fun & well played Thanks Boss. You made me want to pick up that old Ovation 12; that's been sitting on it's stand ignored. I'll see if I still remember those America songs I got it for. "Sister Golden Hair". Here I come.. lol
Way cool! I was about to be righteous indignant about Walk Right In not making the list when you started playing it. I didn’t really expect to see Leadbelly. …These days nobody buys em. But I will! Three killer Leadbelly songs In New Orleans John Hardy In the Pines
A little late to the party this time - sorry! It as always, not disappointed! I’m sure that there are probably 50 other great songs that feature or major on the glorious 12 string guitar but I’m very happy with your selection mate - great job 👏 👍😎🎶

Mark
Oops not I Feel Fine. Eight Days a Week!
@@8MinuteAxe Glad you caught that Mark. When I saw you state (I Feel Fine ) I couldn't understand your choice. 8 Days a week oh yeah on the 12 string. I think after( If I needed Someone ) on Rubber Soul George never played his Ric 12 string on a Beatles song again.
great video. a lot of work. i was there.
You are there.
Great list, well-played! :)
Hey Brother. Always great to hear from you. Much appreciated. Have a great weekend.
38. Big Star "Watch The Sunrise" ♥♥♥
i think its the best one....been playing it for a month now...open G (really open F...full step down for safety) for life!
Should have been higher but I had to consider significance in Rock history to some extent. I didn't want to pull a Cliff Clavin. :). Thanks so much for checking it out. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Mark
on my second viewing I have to ask. How many 12-string guitars in the arsenal now?
two....too I mean, too many
Many thanks for your reply, Mark ! Keep up the great work (and playing) !
My pleasure Art. Thank you!
I’ve always loved the 12 string guitar, so it’s great to see someone with such talent and enthusiasm show what it can do. Thank you.
That was really amazing. 👏
No worries at all my friend. I appreciate your time very much. They aren't making any more of it as far as I know. :)
shame i missed the livestream. i can't wait to get into the video
I put a lot of work into it. If you haven't watched yet, please pay special attention to the backing tracks. I put a TON of work into them.
Well done and chapeau for all yours 12string Guitars
Great list. I have the Eastwood 12 string. Love it. Lyin’ Eyes is a good one to add to the list.
Excellent concept. Expert presentation. Great guitars!
What a great video! That you can play all 50 of these songs is very impressive.
Thanks dude!
Thank you Brian. I sincerely appreciate your time and support. I hope you have a great weekend. Mark
Thanks for noticing. A TON of work went into the backing tracks. A TON.
Another great one "Here comes the sun" from the Beatles
Mark
Goodness! loved this, the 12-string is an art in itself and this selection was wonderful... much love 😊
second comment - so many fantastic tunes here, mark! thanks again!
You're still more than welcome. I really do appreciate the support more than you know.
Well, now you're obviously gonna hafta do a top 1000 in this category. Good luck!
The irony of this sort of list is that the more you include, the more songs seem to be missing.
As soon as _Wild Horses_ came up, I immediately thought of _Lady Jane, As Tears Go By,_ and _Playing with Fire._
And when you started _Hazy Shade of Winter,_ I was anticipating _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ (which has a very striking, yet simple, 12-string part).
Or _Mrs. Robinson,_ or _Fakin' It._
And the list goes on. .
Oh man.
@@8MinuteAxe It was indeed sad! Brad had a voice for the ages!
Check out Jordan Lennon ... th-cam.com/video/KLR1B1rO790/w-d-xo.html
He does a pretty good job.
Selection
@00:58. Don’t let me be misunderstood
@1:08 That’s the Way
@2:25. I’ve Seen a Face
@2:38 Hazy Shade of Winter
@3:31 My Sweet Lord
@4:49 Horse with No Name
Awesome!!! From the Irish old man to the amazing Italian kid, great job!!!!
Man you convinced me , I'm now a subscriber, thank you the video was great
Fantastic list!!
Hey Hollywood. Thanks so much. I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you have a great weekend. Please take care. Mark
Awesome video !!
MARK
Awesome!!!
Dude. Thanks. This is awesome. Also thanks for playing the Reverend 12 for us (and your review of it). It's one of the few electric 12's you can get as a lefty, so it's nice to know that it is an awesome axe.
Excellent ❤
Hey MommaHub. Thanks so much. I like your hat too! Mark
- Brian
Loved it!
Wow that Guitars Amazing!... I wish one!.
Great!
That was wonderful. You put a tremendous amount of work and effort in making this video. Kudos! I liked all of them although I must admit that some of those songs I haven't heard or know who recorded them. You "Eight Miles High" was very good.
Finally bought my first 12 string and you are a source of inspiration and discovery - thank you
So many more songs than I realized had 12-strings in them. I really learned a lot.
nice work! I just got a 12 string so I'm gonna learn half these songs!
😮Wow!, ... intense memory lane, gives inspiration to my RB612 BK. You're honnerd and blessed. Gratitude to you, sir🎶👌🙏
I hope you lead a 12-string renaissance. Thanks for all the awesome examples of why it's such an important instrument.
hey Brian, I really appreciate that. I was astounded at how few 12 strings were at the name show this year. Let me know if you need any tabs. Everything is free. Shoot me an email at Markaranalli@gmail.com. I really appreciate you. Checking out the video. Enjoy the rest of your week. Mark
Great list and thank you for mentioning Hole Hearted….
Stumbled upon this, you , just now , and watched it in it's entirety. Your song choices was what I wanted to hear , all good choices . However, I watched more to hear your 12 string mastery . Seeing all the different 12 strings you played was a bonus .
Just got my Martin 12 string! Doing okay with it, working on my grip. I've played my Martin OOOM for a year, got that down pretty well! I'll be following you for tips on my 12!! 👍
Awesome channel!
Thank you
Just got my very 1st 12 str a late 70s Yamaha (also doubles as my first project guitar because it’s just about unplayable as it is), and to stumble onto your channel is a gift
Cheers, and rock on
Edit- also I feel this doesn’t need to be said but
no contest - this is the top tier best 12 string video out here in the interweb.
Respect and kudos
What an Exceptional video, Outstanding playing, would love to see you play all 50 all the way through...
Cant wait 😂😂
Was it worth it. lol
Loved it ❤ Getting that Squire XII later today and looking forward to ideas 👍
Mark, I just noticed you had added '39 to the list. It is one of my favs, so appreciate it and I believe I recommended it to you before.
Mark- you are truly King of the 12-String (next to Roger McGuinn). Thanks for your flawless performances, and for inspiring each of us to practice a little more… 👍
This is so much fun to watch. Love that your playing seems so precise and conscientious. As for omissions, I'm sure I saw a video of Heart going to town on a 12-string for "Silver Wheels" / "Crazy on You".
amazing +
I love the depth of a 12 string.
Have to agree with #1!!!
Here I come.. lol
Glad Henley left HC alone (Another one is Too Many Hands from One of These Nights )
Yeah Errett. I don't know how or why but I had no trouble this time.
Way cool! I was about to be righteous indignant about Walk Right In not making the list when you started playing it.
I didn’t really expect to see Leadbelly. …These days nobody buys em. But I will!
Three killer Leadbelly songs
In New Orleans
John Hardy
In the Pines
A little late to the party this time - sorry! It as always, not disappointed! I’m sure that there are probably 50 other great songs that feature or major on the glorious 12 string guitar but I’m very happy with your selection mate - great job 👏 👍😎🎶
