    Toronto Media while Kapanen is a Leaf:
    “He’s so underrated, give him a shot, big potential”
    As soon as he leaves Toronto
    -He can’t read the game fast as he moves

      Exactly, all my leaf friends and what I’ve seen from media/analysts is Kapanen produces at a 2nd line rate, would be a top6 winger on most other teams, so much potential and gonna break out.
      Now it’s all low hockey IQ, off ice drama, perennial 3rd line guy, maybe 15 goals. Love how to media perspective flipped so quick on him

      Drei Ayanami the Toronto media is one (of many reasons) why Toronto has never even made the Stanley cup final. I was around in the late 90s. When a promising leaf team never materialized and Toronto media (a clown named stormin Norman ruimack was loudest) bayed for the return of a broken down aged Wendel Clarke. (I never blame Wendel because he was broken down because of the way he played). The Toronto fans started calling for Wendel’s return. So cliff fletcher traded for wendel (he never mentions that trade). He gave up a first round draft pick and a defenceman named tkenny Jonson who became the captain for the islanders and played in three all star games. The defenceman became Roberto Luongo a starting goalie for 20 years and an all star. The wonderful Toronto media. By the way wendel played two or three more seasons then retired.

      It's definitely pretty funny how they're kinda ripping on him as soon as he leaves but their assessment of him isn't wrong tho. He has all the tools to be a top 6 forward no doubt but he just lacks the offensive instincts to be a consistent factor on offense. Maybe he figures it out with Crosby or Malkin but he's always been that way

      TTCGamer could be like Matt Moulson with a few 35 or so goal seasons. And the pick could just as easily turn into someone that never cracks the nhl lineup. Even in the first round drafting is no exact science to be so certain whatever player they get there will be nasty.

    • @hockey19lax37
      @hockey19lax37 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TTCGamer sure it could that’s what I was getting at is that even at 15 it’s a toss up how that prospect pans out. If they don’t move it in any other deal whatever player they take is still going to be 2-3 years at best away from contributing more than likely anyway.
      Moulson had speed like Grabner too though feel like he is always underrated for that because of playing on the same team as Grabner. I think stone hands is a bit much for kapanen and I like Tavares but he isn’t exactly known for elevating his wingers the same way Crosby is, if kapanen can gel well with him could be interesting. That and kapanen only played 30 games on Tavares’ wing until nylander broke the hold out. For a what would have been 22/23 year old winger in his first full nhl season seems like a small sample size to make it seem like his talent level cap is known, especially given his minutes are almost exclusively 5v5 and Pk there’s a learning curve for most players.
      I’m not saying it’s a slam dunk for Pittsburgh or that Toronto will regret losing him just wouldn’t be surprised if he had a good next two seasons in Pittsburgh if he can fit in quickly.

    We should bring back Matt Martin. Never should have traded him. He's top 3 in the league in delivering hits almost every year, and even better in terms of hits per minute ice time. Just 10 mins per game and he's good for 250--300 per year. He's a free agent this summer. We traded for Clifford, paid him $1.6m. Martin was getting $2.5m but he delivers twice as many hits. If we can bring him back for 2 or 2.5 mil per season we should get that done

We need those players focused on goals and offence, PERIOD! Because whenever it's time for them to do what they are paid for, which is (Score goals) they are too exhausted to do it, and they get outplayed easily.. PITT needs(so they suspect) another electric winger who is good on PK. - and a team like TOR with $50 mil in their top 6 doesn't need to be spending anything over 1.5mil outside of their top 6. TOR obviously needs to spend their w/e it will turn out to be- $8/9 mil on Defense. And if they move Johnsson and/or Kerfoot they'd have even more space for Defense🤔. • @wubsworld8946
      @wubsworld8946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cedisdead well Kapanen did alright and his contract IS fairly valuable. Though, not for the way TOR is structured. TOR doesn't necessarily need to replace him point for point. They need to add players with all this cap space th@ will help keep the puck out of their end and in the Ozone.(defenseman, obviously). The C they got from PITT is way more of a 2way player than any of the current fwds on TOR roster. & plays C. & has been playing against 2nd best competition to the NHL and doing really well. -TOR probably looks to slot him in immediately. As for Marner; yeah, dude held out and, imo, he's making $2mil over what I would've like him to get. He was still on pace for another 80-90 point season. Btw, I'd be in favor in trading Marner under some circumstances. With the cap staying low because of covid, a lot of teams in the NHL aren't even going to play up to the cap ceiling because the owners are trying to save money internally. -making it even harder to move a $10mil cap hit like Marner's.. So, TOR will have something like $9mil to spend on 2 legitimate top 6 Defensemen and round out the bottom 6.
      Things aren't looking all th@ bad. I'm excited. Dubas will be very busy👓

    Everything looked amazing on paper. We had the right pieces, the youth, talent, star power, good goalie, good coaches/management, decent defense despite it being our weakest link of the chain, but sometimes these plans just never turn out as we imagined. For some reason, it's just not working and we are in quicksand each year not really going anywhere year after year. As I predicted, if the Leafs don't reach another level by the time Matthews contract is up, I guarantee you he is going to Arizona to go home just like Tavares did leaving NYI (after they went nowhere for years but were always on the cusp). No way Matthews is staying as a Leaf unless we become serious contenders. If we win a cup before his contract is up, he may still leave because now that he's done what he wanted, he can feel free to just play for his hometown. Either way, chances of Matthews staying in Toronto is very low.

    Trade Willy for a solid rhd. not a star, just solid 80 game guy who can pop a few on the pp (because in theory that's what these overpaid forwards are for right?). Take the extra cap space and re-sign Freddy. Pop Robertson in the line-up. Then you know you have a solid keeper, a top 2 pairing, put Dermott along side Muzzin, not perfect but fine. then the D is looking a bit better. trade Johnsson for someone who can score 10-15 but also defend well, providing cover for the D so they and the goalie aren't left out to dry......

      @@Cedisdead cap space for a defenseman potential, Kappys impact has been minimal his style on a top six requires a setup guy Matthews and Tavares have a RW already, a top pick, we also have cheap winger prospects that need ice time, we got a prospect Center in return as well, I did always think that Jesper Lindgren would have developed into something but it's taking awhile as he was a project. If the leafs grab a freeagent defenseman or steal one off a team looking to shed cap space to rebuild during Covid era and draft a future defenseman at pick 15 to replace Muzzin or the potential stop gap we win the deal on so many levels. Flipping pick makes no sense when we have forward that can be traded and called up/rejigg the lineup because it seems like every playoff Nylander eventually becomes a 3rd line 2nd line Centerman anyway like how Kadri was slot into that role, Kerfoot can become an expendable asset if that third line becomes a strength.

      @NotExplicable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Cedisdead true but his value is lower than it should be at the moment and the list of teams willing to take his hit now is probably low for trade partners. The leafs will want a decent return for him as well. Maybe Philly? They need offense + young defenseman that they have. Calgary is another option. Another thing to think about is Tavares age and potential decline the offense will have to come from somewhere. Fixing the defense right now is a lot easier and doable especially since there was a deal already to be had with other teams at the deadline with some of our third line forwards. Having a defense will make everything look better as along as the wings support the defense then production won't need high to win games the big money will have to produce and rest of the team will need to keep the ship afloat. Having Nylander on the third line will at least make the third line a threat still like what the Pens did with Kessel.
