  • This video Part 2 of 2, will show you how to tap a crankshaft on the older small block Chevy’s. The older engines (283/327) had a press-on balancer with no bolt to hold it on. This vid will show you how to drill/tap out the front end of the crankshaft so you can then “Bolt on” a new modern quality harmonic balancer. I’ll be using the crankshaft drill and tap fixture tool kit from mrhotrod6.com. It’s a long technical video, but if you really want to do this, feel free to watch…

    Thank you! I will be doing this job on my 235 Inline 6 with that exact tapping kit, now I have some confidence to do it! Was a little nervous but I see it's slick with that kit, appreciate you sharing this!

    Finally found a video, thank you for share.
    I’m doing a refresh on my inline 6 250 and came across this same situation, I pull the harmonic balancer off but have now way to put back and I don’t want to hammer it back 😂

    Thank you. Just bought a ‘68 327. I was confused about not having a factor bolt in the crank; for the #harmonicbalancer. You’re #sbc #327chevy #283chevy video made my day.

    Great video thanks for sharing. I have a 350 small block , I noticed when trying to purchase this tool it shows for 283,237 but no 350?

    • @outboundterrain6454
      @outboundterrain6454  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I saw that too?? I know the 350 has a bit of a longer snout. But I’m thinking that the tool would work to tap that out, it’s the same bolt thread and size for a modern balancer. Good luck maybe call them and see what they say. Good luck with your project…👍

    Not all cranks can be drilled.

    Actually it would be a torsional vibration damper. And saves your accessories from vibrations. Does nothing to protect crank, internally balanced engine.

    My 327 has the harmonic balancer on the crank , no treads inside it😮 now what?

    • @outboundterrain6454
      @outboundterrain6454  ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the original balancer still stuck on? Anyway tap out the snout on the crankshaft , then you will have a threaded crank snout to bolt on the new balancer….

      Hey Jeff sorry about the late response. The small one is 1/4 HSS, and the larger one is 25/64 HSS.

    You never said anything about the key way on crankshaft... I still needed to remove water pump and timing chain cover to remove key way...

      Which kit did you get cus there’s 2 different ones. 1 says 7/16 and the other says 1/2-20 but both works for 283 and 327 motors. Just want to make sure which kit to get before it get it
