I think that as much as this film is a blessing to India, the West actually benefits more from this film. Our judgmental attitudes toward other cultures are exposed a bit and the film does such a great job of exposing what family and true love are, that it does put a great deal of our hypocrisy in our Christian culture to shame. I watched this film long time ago, and now I watched your reaction. Not sure but the in the end when she asks for Hindi newspaper, it represents her staying connected to her roots. Even I was rooting for the French guy, but her husband always loved her..yes..he took her for granted and disrespected her at times, but she never hated him and still chose him. If she would have gone on a “coffee date” with the French guy..this film would have lost its essence.
I personally feel like shashi and Laurent should have ended up together, they had more chemistry and they understood each other even when they were speaking different languages and the language barriers while satheesh couldn't understand her even when they were speaking the same language.
The only wrong thing in the film is Hindi is NOT India's national lang. We have no national lang. English and Hindi are BOTH official lang. And if anything English is higher as it's taught to every Indian in school even in local lang medium schools. MOST of India is NON-Hindi.

The line "I don't need love, all I need is some respect", tells u all u need to understand. She was not looking for love. She had love in her family, no matter how obscure that may seem Most ppl focus too much on the husband while forget the worst was still the daughter. So, the mysogyny angle doesn't work. It is about how family members can take one of the family members for granted, especially Mom. It can very much happen for dads too. I think you missed the point of the movie. It is about how house-wives are under-valued in general. The only reason the film had this ending was because Shashi still had a traditional mindset. Without that mental programming, it would have been too obvious to ignore who was treating her better.

I very well understand that a working man who is the only provider in the house needs a household professional for the things he cannot look after. And I understand the importance of both a working husband and a housewife. But.....come on guys just because your spouse is bound to you by marriage dont take their own indentity away (and it goes for both husband and wife)....stand up for them when they are being disrespected by your children, learn to show each other reliability, compassion and respect. Marriage doesnt equal to taking away someone's freedom. But not many people understand and abide by that.

A lot of ppl misinterprets this movie. They always go for the mysogyny and female oppression angle but it was about none of that. The line "I don't need love, all I need is some respect", tells u all u need to understand. She was not looking for love. She had love in her family, no matter how obscure that may seem
Most ppl focus too much on the husband while forget the worst was still the daughter. So, the mysogyny angle doesn't work. It is about how family members can take one of the family members for granted, especially Mom. It can very much happen for dads too. A lot of ppl wanted Sashi to go with Laurent but that was never a solution. She needed her respect back in her own family. Also, the issue of English is quite predominant in India. A lot of ppl still think u are educated and high class only if u can speak English. It is a colonial mindset which is hard to get rid of.
Now I want Kristen and Michael to react to this too and u two to react on "Cheeni Kum". U will love that movie a lot too

I think you missed the point of the movie. It is about how house-wives are under-valued in general. The only reason the film had this ending was because Shashi still had a traditional mindset. Without that mental programming, it would have been too obvious to ignore who was treating her better.
Her treatment her disrespect was a clear derivative of misogyny though. How women who r housewife are undervalued and how lot of families have this toxic dynamic where the father and daughter together make fun of the mother. Thing is this does not save the daughter from the same treatment later in her life. Patriarchy spares none.
