@@phoenix4918 I personally thing English speaking culture become more dominant because of corporates you can't get a good high paying jobs in mnc's if you can't speak english fluently.
In this film, English is just a means to convey the real moral of the story. Indian housewives are more capable and deserving of respect than they are accorded. The daughter is a typical teenager who thinks everything her mom does is uncool. The husband is another typical Indian character that thinks the marriage revolves around him and that his needs are more important than hers. The struggles with English just made this more relatable to the male audience too and that is all they are focussing on in the comments.
Yeah exactly. All these colonial slave mentality comments are cringe. My parents certainly didn't put me in an english medium school because they were suffering from slave mentality. They put me there so that I can be well equipped in this competitive world. Even though Sridevi is not the actor who appealed to me as an audience and therefore not my favourite, I have mad respect for her as an acting professional. At the epitome of her career, she commanded respect as the female Amitabh Bachchan of India. The airplane scene is a throwback to some films they did together in their younger days, in one of which especially the audience went mad about the pairing of these two mega-stars of their time.
The scene on the airplane between Sridevi-ji (RIP) and Amit-ji reminds me of the story of my mom’s traveling alone to the U.S. from India (her first-ever plane ride, I believe) after marrying my dad, since it took a few months for her to get a visa. She met a kindly older gentleman on the plane who helped her so much, and remained a good friend to our family. He returned to India years later, and I was glad I got to visit him, not long before his passing. RIP Sreenath Uncle. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend. 🙏🏽

The reason this movie touched a chord is because it actually shows the reality of many housewives. Many men are missing those finer points because the English point is more relatable to them - but the main point of this is how housewives in India have usually been less educated ones (due to women's education not being prioritized for a long time and now it's changing) Many Women of Shashi's age have been to school till 4th or 7th grade. Then they are kept home and taught home skills. So they get left behind when conversations on English happen, they are considered uncool, naive or incompetent even though they are quite competent and can be savvy and business minded. She learns English but with that her family change their perception of her - they respect her more, not because of English but because she showcases that she can do anything she wants if she puts her mind to it. They assumed that just because she can't speak English she was supposed to be made fun of. That's what many housewives in India go through. Their own families think "You don't know anything". English is just a tool to show this.
If my mom wouldn't know English...i don't mind it at all. Never be ashame of our own mom's or dad's or any fam member. No matter how they look, no matter how they are... No matter they don't know or know. We should love and accept them no matter what 💕 ....if we are ashame of them, or feel shy to introduce them to your frnz then that shows how immature and disgusted humans being we are.
I swear Amitabh Bachchan is like the Morgan Freeman of India, you could have an alarm clock or narrator of anything as him, and people would be so happy.
Its a little weird but in india knowing english is taken as how educated u are indians appreciate english more than their own language.knowing good english in india is taken as a sign of smartness and status making it really tough for many like sridevi's role to survive in india its wierd for me even though im an indian cuz i havent been broughtup in india rather in dubai. There it is i felt u kinda missed why sridevi was being mocked at so i explained it.

But Not knowing english ain't mean being less educated at all (sadly colonial hangover indian society thinks otherwise)
Sridevi the super star who ruled Indian film industry for years
Not years but decadrs
If my mom wouldn't know English...i don't mind it at all. Never be ashame of our own mom's or dad's or any fam member. No matter how they look, no matter how they are... No matter they don't know or know. We should love and accept them no matter what 💕 ....if we are ashame of them, or feel shy to introduce them to your frnz then that shows how immature and disgusted humans being we are.
16:46 I think it's typical Indian thing to re- check the lock after locking the door. 😂😂
I swear Amitabh Bachchan is like the Morgan Freeman of India, you could have an alarm clock or narrator of anything as him, and people would be so happy.
This is such a great movie and Sridevi was such a great actress ni matter what role she played
Both of you were lovely in this vid. Eager to see beautiful reaction to other parts
