      But, as someone who understands French, I thought it was a lost opportunity to show Indian audiences how a respectful man speaks to a woman. I liked the fact Shashi was never really conflicted between her husband and Laurent. She was v stoic and always knew she couldn't get drawn into his words and feelings. But she recognised and appreciated his attention despite being dismissive of it. And yes like Syntel said it was nice to see how they depicted you meet people in your journey that may not necessarily become a part of your life. Shashi's line when she answered the same thing to her niece says it all about why the story didn't go Laurent route. The line was "I didn't lack love, what I lacked was respect". This is all u need to understand. All Shashi needed was affirmation and appreciation which she gained back again, with positive reinforcement from Laurent. She herself needed to believe she is that good, which became possible seeing it from his eyes. That gave her new views on her own life and made it better

      Similarly, u cant find anyone mostly that doesn't love his/her mother, but is that person giving the due respect? These are separate emotions and has separate importance. Don't get confused. That's why she had to specify to her niece she doesn't need any outside love which probably would be solution if ur idea of no respect = no love was used. These lines are nice to read on paper but not applicable in life. Lots of things have separate compartments in our life and we need to keep it that way.

    I thought the ending was a subtle piece of brilliance - she asked for a Hindi newspaper because while she learned to speak English and loved discovering something new, she hasn't forgotten her roots or what she originally used to love as well. I think the message was that she can now understand both English and Hindi and the old - the new, all of it is now part of her life.

      If in this case of Sridevi even if some women choosen/decided to go the way where she got someone who not just loved but respected her, able to see her who she really is as person, see her goodness & appreciates, admires all of it, much nicer to her than the ppl she thought as her own, despite knowing her weaknesses & lackings ready to accept her, made her feel valued, feel lived, despite not understanding words still understood her..Then that should be fine too whether as very indian thing or human thing, It shouldn't be seen smthing odd to our culture to value own happiness smtimes and rather must accept as healthy practice in culture too coz most times ppl not choose that happy ray out of burden of responsiblities, guilt forced by judgemental society & shame, disrespect, whatnot toxicity would be thrown at them just for that instead of letting things go it's way peacefully, positively without making a big deal of it. Sometimes when you've lived a long time with someone, you end up taking their presence and love for granted. The movie amidst other things teaches us to never forget to show our compassion, appreciation, respect and love for our loved ones.
    Also, people who pinpoint others flaws and weaknesses in disguise of a joke should understand that all individuals are aware of their flaws; you cannot imagine the insecurities they have; so while they are trying to live with their flaws, the least you can do is not remind them of it again and again. Compassion is the key.

    I think this movie states that only love is not enough between Husband and wife, there has to be respect as well. Sridevi knows that her husband loves her but does not respect her. This is reflected in the kids' behaviour. They must be taking cues from the father.
    Last but not the least, Constant exposure to ridicule and criticism (over and covert) has led to Sridevi not respecting herself. So this movie is a journey of Sridevi proving to herself and the world that she is more than a wife, mother, homemaker and a daughter-in-law. They didn't show husband apologizing cos many men's ego wouldn't allow them to do so. Another aspect is you don't always have to say sorry in words his expression, his deeds do show it.

    This movie is so important for the Indian audience across age groups because it empowers and restores the dignity of the Indian homemaker. This may be true in a lot of other Asian households as well, the homemaker is very ill treated and isn't appreciated for her work, she's doing a thankless and unpaid job, without any leaves. Hands down, this movie is a love letter to the Indian homemaker. Adding to this, it's a very personal movie to a lot of people in my circle as their moms or relatives struggled with English too. The colonial hangover in India is very real on certain occasions, and I'm happy this movie didn't make Shashi feel the need to learn English out of colonial pressure or peer pressure, but only out of need for independence. Gauri Shinde did a fabulous job with this movie. Thank you Achara and Syntell for watching this ❤️

    Thanks to Achara translating the French dialogues for Syntell, I finally understand what Laurent was trying to say and it makes my personal experience of the movie so much more meaningful now. I understand it was a creative choice to not give subtitles for his dialogues to make us feel the same way Shashi feels about him, but knowing now that these were the dialogues, it feels like a gap in connecting to this movie completely has finally been closed.

    Only thing that you people missed the importance of how Shashi said, "Do you have New York...sorry, do you have any Hindi newspaper?". It showed her husband and the audience in large that she still hasn't forgotten her roots. And that is the beauty of the ending

  • @RV-fc9eo
    @RV-fc9eo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    11:47 Honestly that's the point where it is *not* a feel good indie. It's realistic. The situation where she slaves away from morning to night, sacrificing her interests, hasn't been addressed or changed. She still does that, but the ending supposedly alludes that she's still going to go home with the lesson that individuality and self respect don't come over duty, except now they won't treat her like a literal slave, just make her work like one.
    The scene where she rejects the newspaper really puts everything into context. It's like she's being a 'good' woman/mother/wife by giving up her silly little side pursuit.
    The thing about Indian cinema and how progressive this was back in 2012 (even by hollywood's standards) is that the gener is rarely distinct and defined, and that this movie is self aware. Everything needs to have a little of something, masala movies, as you know. But to me, it was a sad reflection of the condition and value of housewives (in addition to the social divide English created). It was a silent lesson. Maybe that was the intent of the writers. Maybe it's judt patriarchy.
    I understand if you guys are hesitant of being critical of Indian culture because of the culture differences and at the risk of offending your audience, but being frank and handling it sensitively will probably be better.

      Actually I agree with everything you say, what a brilliant analysis! Jug jug jiyo.
      Also I see that it's small changes like this in life that also needs to be celebrated. My personal experience, my mom started pursuing her career dream at 42 age. And while she is good at it now, her role in family is same, thankfully my dad wasn't like the one in movie. He supported her, he would do house chores, i shifted to other city, so they both had to manage it.
      But my mom's absolute love for her kitchen is something she won't give up. Even today when I cook, she enters to add finishing touches.
      It's just what she did with lot of passion all her life. So, difficult to give up.

      @Akashi P "I don't need love...my family loves me a lot, they just don't respect me." ~ something along those lines. Which really hits the point. It wasn't just being taken for granted that hurt her, it was the disrespect in general. Like the opening sequence. She does all the work, makes tea (despite not drinking it), gets a newspaper she can't read, makes food she doesn't eat until she serves everyone, and doesn't even get a little time to unwind with a hot coffee. She doesn't like that. No woman likes that. When they repeat the sequence as her family arrives in New York, it was like water over the only plans she made for herself in a long time. Her relationship with her family didn't really improve. They always loved her, and her daughter especially was remoresful but that was about it. Is the dad going to get her coffee? Nope. Anything else going to change? Maybe the language bias.
      They didn't address these nuances, these troubles and sacrifices which Indian housewives are expected to go through are normalized. Throughout I felt english was almost an allegory for her ambition. She was unsure at first, discouraged by her family. Then she was pushed by life to realize it. They she was pushed in the same box again.

    • @RV-fc9eo
      @RV-fc9eo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Akashi P There is a part up to interpretation, and then there isn't.
      She believes that blindly looking after everyone with no regard for herself is her duty, as seen in the scene where she tries going to class but her son gets hurt instead. Independent of the story, that is classic husband blame reassignment behaviour.
      Anything happens to the kid and mom's not there, where was she? it's her fault.
      If anything happens to the kid and mom was right there, what was she doing? it's her fault.
      (and this is not exclusive to India.)
      Then, I stress again, is the montage of the morning routine. If you don't feel an ounce of sympathy for it, then you haven't been in that position or observed someone there closely. No one likes it. As you speak of your mom, I don't think that doing the dishes is her passion and lifetime goal. She just does it because she's taught that's what good housewives do, like my mom too.
      The last part is exactly my orignal point.
      It's not a feel-good story. It's a feel-bad story. (well not exactly. More like a mix of both). Even though Shashi stumbled to some untrodden dirt road of an adventure, she ends where she was, thouh looking at things with a new perspective.
      As she says to Laurent finally, her position hasn't really changed, how she views herself has changed.
      The silent themes scream if you look for them. Her path hasn't changed. The journey and destination are the same. That's the grim part, and then there is the consolation of resignment and acceptance too.

    Welcome to my long a** comment 😂
    Many people, especially youngsters, who watched this movie still don't like the ending of this story, without Shashi and Laurent united. But I personally feel that would have been a very unrealistic character development for Shashi. She was so selfless that she didn't even know she was a small entrepreneur for "just making and selling laddoos". If this was some fairy-tale movie, then 4-weeks of English classes in a foreign country would have transformed her into a rebellious woman - she would have left her husband (whom she loved and respected, despite him treating her awfully) and go off to live with a guy whom she knows only for 4 weeks (and he belongs to an entirely different culture). But, it's not a fairy tale - it's a story based on Indian beliefs and culture.
    Achara, you were very articulate about your view on Shashi's decision to stay in her marriage. I also loved Syntell's take on it and also, specially for talking about the small important scene with Amitabh Bachchan.

      I mean I don't like that she stayed in that relationship because it's not a good one for her. And realistically speaking the chances of the guy actually changing his mind is small. But at the same time when I watched the movie it makes a lot more sense for her character to stay in that relationship regardless of that. Even if her husband continued to treat her badly she would stayed.
      It's was a good choice as a movie showing a character like hers. But that doesn't mean it's a good choice to make in real life. Or even that the only choice she could make is between the both of them. It's not like she can't divorce her husband and also not immediately go with Laurent. But her character wouldn't do that.

    i watched this movie when I was a teen and since then I payed extra attention to how i talk to my mother, because i understood that she was doing her best and she has feelings too so I should always try to appreciate that and if something like happens where my parents can't understand something in English, then that's okay, I can always explain it gently and be nice with it, especially that my parents didn't learn English and didn't have to since my country doesn't use English much.
    SO, i think this movie has lots of beautiful messages so we need to learn from it and appreciate it.

    You know why I love and admire Achara, it's not even about the east and the west. Achara just understands the Indian fabric of emotions effortlessly. Everybody has their own share of struggles in life, but in the end, it's not about you, or your giving back, but it's all about being able to bring about a realization, without losing your own resilience and dignity

    I LOVE Syntell's views!!! Achara, of course is a pro on the channel :) but Syntell's inputs are so appreciated here especially the metaphor of plane ride as Life. Brilliant perspective!! I also loved how he saw the movie for what it is and allowed it to open him to another context rather than comparing it to an American movie and trying to fit it in a western mould. Loved this reaction. 👏

    Loved the discussion and also the comments. Read many people's view point in the comments and they were really good. This movie kinda makes me feel a little guilty as I was almost like the daughter in the movie when I was in school. My mom doens't speak English and all my classmates had thier parents all high class speaking English and working. My mom is a housewife and I used to be embarassed. Now I feel so ashamed that I ever thought like that cuz now I realise that it's nothing to be embarassed about. My mom wasn't able to get English education during her time and that's not her fault. Many parents or even Kids don't know English in other countries where the mother tongue is not English. I'm glad I've learnt my lesson.

      @jake dawson true to some extent but it does get very monotonous when movies are watched so skeptically. Some movies are supposed to make you feel good and a escape from reality. It doesn't deserved to be scrutinised under a microscope in every shot like this movie

    • @sunny_sinku
      @sunny_sinku 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @jake dawson bro i agree what you are saying. some people may find it intresting even i also BUT NOT ALWAYS. it sometimes becomes boring and monotonous specially in these kind of movies. i would suggest him either do a seperate segement altogether or atleast provide time stamp so people who are not intrested on "technical" part of the movie can skip the part

    I haven't seen the movie, but from what I've heard, I would like another ending where Shashi ended up with Laurent. But I think that people also forget that there's a third option; simply divorce and still not get together with Laurent. Start a new chapter of her life where she continues the exploration of her own character. She can still be a wonderful mom, be self-less and make delicious ladoos. But also take that message with her that she shouldn't be taken for granted and deserves better.
    It's great that the husband changed his ways, but his wife, Shashi, isn't some morals and ethics lesson for him to learn from. Shashi is his wife, his equal and romantic partner he's sharing his life with. He can change some if his perspectives and learn new things about her, but compassion and understanding are lessons for their daughter, not a grown man like him. The husband can take what he learned and hopefully treat his new wife (if he decides to remarry) better than how he treated Shashi.
    Not to mention the negative impact he had on their daughter's upbringing. It's very clear where she gets her views from. She's probably more blunt about it, but kids tend to be less discreet than adults in general.
    I feel her divorcing, or at least separating from her husband would've shown other Indian women that it's ok to put your happiness first and not get stuck in a servant-wife role your whole life. India in many ways is too stuck with the restrictive conservative view of a nuclear family and the gender roles within it. As an example, Henrik Ibsen's play "A Doll's House" is a 18th century play exactly about this.

      the comment i was looking for,, i'm not the only one,,,, i was upset with the ending too as yes its okay to be with your husband but,, he never seen her, never respected,, her ending with her family gave me a feeling that insulting is okay, its okay to make your other half(wife) unhappy and degrade,, why is it okay? i wish they seperated,, this could show that women can choose their happiness.. open up a business in new york and settle there even if not with laurent.. idk why i'm sad with the ending,,, people might hate me for this but she had to bear a lot because of them,,

    @Achara, divorce is a major thing in India but most of the divorce is something considered by family and couples do go for separation as a reason to be difference in thoughts and expectations. Issue is time have changed the world but some people still consider old thought process as womens should be like this and men should earn this much... After marriage husband should earn only for wife and wife should deliver kids and if she have any health issue then most of the chances is that she can be abandoned by husband and his family ( i can say only from his family and naturally husband have to agree with his family)...unless family does make sense then divorce is something avoided because traditional we do try to fix things in relationship because people tends to change that doesn't means relationship have to go through the pain until we respect differences...
