    Thanks for another fabulous video with so many helpful tips. This is one of my absolute favorite plants. I made an arrangement for church last year, and the arrangement is still pretty this year, about 10 months later. I have tried spray paint before without good success, so I will try the one you named. We have vanilla-strawberry hydrangeas that only stay pretty about 3 days or so before looking burned. We irrigate 4 mornings weekly. I wonder if the problem is because we live in the South.

    Kelly your Limelights are gorgeous. My favourite plant in my garden. For many years our 3 limelights have been fantastic, super showy but the last 2 years the flowers have got quite small and the plants themselves look leggy and bare at the ground. They get watered and new soil around the base but they just look like they are old and struggling. They are about 10 years old. Any tips on how I can give them new life? I do prune them very late fall of just the flowers.

    Great video! I just moved last year to beautiful Oregon into a house with two young hydrangeas that looked a lot like the limelight. So I'm guessing they are the limelight hydrangea. They are planted within 3 feet of each other and seem very close. Do you think I should spread them out and what time of year is good for transplanting? Thank you!!

    What a wonderful channel you have and absolutely gorgeous garden!!! May i ask, is the Limelight you are showing in this video multiple plantings or just one? I just bought one today. The label noted 6'-8' mature size. But i keep seeing that they can grow upwards of 13'! 😮 I'm wondering if i need to plant it in a wide open space or in my shrub bed where i intended? (I also bought a Little Lime which i may decide to put in the shrub bed instead.) Do the Little Limes get much bigger than what their label implies?

    Hi Kelly, I’m a new subscriber and I’m loving all your videos! I would like to plant 3 or 4 limelight hydrangeas in my yard this year, should I plant this spring or wait until fall? I’m up north in Massachusetts. Thank you!

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Suzanne , great question . You could plant the limelight hydrangeas in spring or fall. If I were you , I would just dive right in and get them planted in the spring . Make sure you have a sunny location for them since they love sun and make sure you dig the hole larger then the root ball so the roots have a chance to spread out in easy to break through soil and get established . Also remember to provide plenty of water ( without over watering ) . The tag on your limelight hydrangeas should give you advice on how much water they need . Also remember to break up the roots in the root ball if they are dry and knitted together tightly . So excited you will be growing these . They are amazing as fresh and dry cut flowers for you home . Happy gardening 🌸😊

    I have 20 limelight hydrangeas (3 gallon pots) ready to be planted as a hedge here in Seville Ohio. How far apart would you suggest digging each hole? Your plants appear massive! Im concerned the suggested 7-8 feet apart isnt enough.

    On the tag of my strawberry shake hydrangea indicates to feed regularly .
    What does it mean to feed regularly? How often should I feed the plant? What kind of fertilizer would you use to feed regularly? The slow release one or the the powder one that needs to mix in the water?
    Will you still feed it after August?
    Thanks.

    Hi Kelly, love your videos! I live in CT and didn’t prune my lime of light hydrangea because I’d like to get smaller flowers for arrangements. Should I trim off the old flowers now and leave the rest of the branches?!? Normally, I cut back this plant a lot each year and it grows like crazy with tons of huge flowers!
    I have a hydrangea tree as well that I feel like I have to prune heavily each year because the branches are very long and thin. It seems no matter how much I cut them back, they grow back to the same size each year!! Any advice?

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeff Yep that’s the nature of the beast with hydrangeas as far as going back to their natural size even after we prune them I don’t know that there was a way around that you may consider growing a smaller variety like little lime. I am also a fan of not pruning back my limelight hydrangeas because I also like the smaller blooms plus it’s less work😃

    Hi,
    I have my hydrangeas in a self watering pot...unfortunately it was dried and I lost most of the blooms due to extreme heat of Queensland, Australia. Is there a way to help them to give a second blooms?

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may need to wait for fresh blooms to appear next year since many hydrangeas only bloom once a year. To make sure your hydrangea has the best chance of coming back strong , make sure the size of the pot is still good. Hydrangeas tend to get larger in size in the beginning years and their roots need lots of space to spread out. If the roots are all tangled together in a pot that is too small, they will not be able to absorb the water and soil nutrients they need. This may be why your plant dried out even though it was getting watered . The water may have gotten trapped on the outside of the root mass and never made it up to the plant . Consider tranferring it to a larger pot if necessary and if the roots seem all jammed up and tightly bound together, take a knife and slice the sides of the the roots and the bottom roots of the plant to break them up. Dont worry about hurting the plant by doing this. Then break up some of the root tightness with your hands. This is will help the plant establish a better root system where it can get the water and nutrients it needs . You can also sprinkle some compost in the new pot along with fresh soil to help your plant. Make sure your plant gets 6-8 hours of sunlight and keep up on the watering . Good luck getting this hydrangea to bloom again next year . Let me know how she did . 🙂🌺

      Hey there flower friend, I have the same issue with a few of mine . The reason mine are bent is because other plants got too tall and now cast a shadow over it blocking the sun that hits it . My plant is bending towards the sun .
      Yes you can stake it but if it is not thriving in a year if two and you feel you have the same issue , you may want to move it in fall to a sunnier location . Good luck !🍀👍 🌸

      Although many plants have a hard time growing under black walnut trees, hydrangeas don’t seem to be affected by the the black walnut’s allelopathic substance - juglone- that other other plants are sensitive to .

      Sorry not sure I understand your question . If you mean how many potted plants do I bring in from plant stores to plant this garden I’m not even sure I can give an accurate number . I would imagine between 50 and 100 . Many if the plants reseeded themselves or spread out in their own but I still had to do a ton of digging . This garden is also more then 10 years old so I’ve been working on it for a long time . Hope I answered you question 🌸😊

    I recently planted some limelights, 7' apart. I'm seeing many planting their hedge only 3-4' apart. Ahhhh! Is my 7' too far apart? Mine don't need to be a hedge per se, but I'd like them to grow together to where you don't know where one ends and another begins. I'm in Delaware, so similar growing conditions to you.

      Not to worry . Planting them seven feet apart was very smart . I have a few on mine planted 5 feet apart from each other and I wish I had planted them seven feet apart since they get so huge . You are fine . Leave them be and enjoy them each year . 👏👏👏🤗

Similar to Loofah Life, I would like to see my limelights growing into each other where one cannot see the end or the beginning of each limelight but I also don't want them to look "jammed". Hi, I need advice from you.
    Stella from Oklahoma (temp 90-95 now, and will be up to 100 F soon in July).
    I planted a limelight hydrangea last October using cow manure mixed with garden soils (50:50). I applied this mixtures again this March when the new leaves started coming up. I also water with super bloom (12:55:6), and Miracid between April and May in different occasions. After that I just water the plant 1 time per day, but I don’t get any blooms at all. Is it bc I fertilized too much?
    Somehow you have never talked about how you fertilized your hydrangeas, Is it bc you have never fertilized them?
    A lot of people mentioned that they don’t get any blooms once they fertilized their hydrangeas, although they planted in the bad soils.
    The spot I planted my limelight hydrangea in an area where it receives the morning sun until 12 pm and becomes shady after 1:00 pm. With watering 1 time per day, it still drys out and almost all leaves have dropped. I started covering it with a light cloth when it gets too hot and water it one more time in the afternoon. will I end up killing the plant? What will you do in my situations to help it survive they the summer here and bloom. Please advise. Thank you so much. Enjoy watching your videos!!

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there , super questions and thank you for being so descriptive. This helps me diagnose your issue . I hardly ever fertilize my hydrangeas. They all give me tons of blooms so I leave them alone . If your soil has too much nitrogen your plant will have lovely green leaves but the high nitrogen will inhibit bloom growth . I also think you are over watering which is why the leaves are dropping off . To see if the plant needs water , simple out your finger in the ground about an inch or two. If it is dry , it needs water . If it’s wet , leave it alone . Over watering may cause root rot which can harm the plant , stop bloom production and cause leaves to drop off . Good luck 🌸

    • @strllachen5865
      @strllachen5865 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also,
      1. how often do you water your hydrangeas over the winter?
      Do you still put fingers into the soils to see if they are dry or wet in the ground in the winter to decide if they need to be watered?
      2. What types of soils do you mix to plant your hydrangeas?
      I appreciate you show us how you water your hydrangeas when planting it to the ground. I normally would give them a real soak, and maybe that is why each one of them died.
      However, I often run into yellow leaves or rotten leaves looking issues every time after I water my hydrangeas.
      They are planted in the shade and I only water them every other week once my fingers feel a little bit dry in the soils.
      It seems like they only like to be misted instead of really water into the soils.
      I really don’t understand how can people mentioned that they water their hydrangeas everyday. What’s your thought on this?
      Your answers are very very helpful for the beginner like me. Thank you so much.

      Limelights get huge and they grow fast so they probably won't do good in pots at all. The pots will constrict the roots. The dryness and browning sounds like they weren't getting enough water. I would get them in the ground and water every time the top of the soil feels dry. I am also in zone 9 and am wanting hydrangeas. Keep me updated on how it goes if you can.

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, plants need some time to get established when they are planted . I think you are over watering though . The rule of thumb is to check the soil around the base of the plant by sticking your finger in the soil about an inch or two . If it is dry , then water the plant . If it is moist , leave it alone. If you over watering it , you can cause root rot from having the roots sit in water that doesn’t have time to drain . Good luck .

      How to Grow Zone 9 Hydrangeas
      source ➡️ www.hunker.com/13428422/how-to-grow-zone-9-hydrangeas
      ...
      Hydrangeas grown in acidic soil produce pink flowers.
      Afternoon shade is extremely important if you wish to grow hydrangeas in zone 9. Hydrangeas are hardy from zones 4 through 9, and the heat in zone 9 means hydrangeas need extra protection. Because hydrangeas prefer moist, well-draining soil, they need a shady spot to keep the soil from drying out too quickly. While it is possible to grow many of the most popular hydrangea varieties in zone 9, consider growing the native oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), an understory, shade-loving shrub.

      @KellyLehman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there , limelight is such an amazing hydrangea to have as your main plant for a garden . Here is some information I looked up for you regarding sunlight for limelight hydrangeas ....
      While garden hydrangeas need shade to do well in our climate, panicle hydrangeas like Limelight thrive in full sun to part shade (six to eight hours or more of direct sun). It seems odd to plant these hydrangeas in full sun, but they love it. Plants are not as stocky and full as garden hydrangeas and do not bloom as well if planted in too much shade.
