Moving the red dogwood from behind the hydrangeas was a great decision. That’s gardening for you - constant tweaking and don’t we just love it! Just found you about 2 weeks ago and I’m watching a couple of your videos each day with my morning coffee. Really enjoying your garden.

Well Judith you just made my day! 🥰 I used to live in MA for many years, so I’m familiar with the chilly wet days even in late Summer. Meanwhile, it is gross and soupy with humidity here in southern NJ. 😬 Luckily the hydrangeas and flowers can handle the weather well, even after rain from Frank, Henri and now Ida. ☂️ I’m ready to dry out! @@GardenSanity I will do, thank you. Went out to water yesterday because it's been really dry for a couple wks and discovered a honey bee nest! They're quietly working on one of my old baskets I have hanging off my arbor! I was so happy to see this because it seems they're getting fewer and fewer.
That’s awesome! I love bees! I once had someone admiring my lavender, but when they noticed all of the bees, they said they’d never plant it. They didn’t want the bees around. I realize some people are allergic, but I can walk right up to the bees and they are way too happy with my garden to notice me! 🐝
I love your little lime hydrangeas!!! I’m super excited because I bought 4 little lime punch so the only difference is the Hawaiian Punch color. Thank you for all the info and I LOVE your gorgeous flower beds! Thank you for sharing them with us 🌷🌷🌷
I found them online at Home Depot $36.99 so not cheap but hey! At least I get to enjoy them for a few weeks and you get them within a week. I typed little lime punch and if you scroll down, you will find the Home Depot link 😁. I hate when they show you plants and say oops not for you…… you can buy them next year! So the Italian in me says….. oops back at you…. I found some!! 🤣🤣
😂 I’m laughing out loud at your “oops back at you” comment! I’m the same way. In the Spring, we wanted to buy a Magnolia Jane to replace one of the ones that died. We couldn’t find them anywhere but finally found them online via Walmart. The small shrub arrived via a nursery from Florida and was in mint condition! Jackpot! (And thanks for the info on the lime punch...as I am heavily leaning to getting one now.)
Garden Sanity do it! Do it!! Lol. Then we can be twinning with the hydrangeas 🤣🤣🤣. I have found the possible and impossible online but in Wisconsin where I live, zone 5 makes it a little challenging…… all the best plants are at least zone 6. It’s like wanting some really cute shoes if you have size 9……. Good luck! Size 6 gives you infinite possibilities and if you find a size 9, they make you look like a duck. Hi Frank, the usual spacing is between 4 and 6 feet apart. Mine are 4 feet apart, and I like the way they grow a bit into each other but don’t look crowded. (There’s also a Little Lime on the other side of the River Birch in that bed, so it’s a bit farther apart.) I also prune them every Spring. I hope this helps? 🌱
Hello! What a beautiful garden! I was wondering what plant we see at 0.20 seconds with the little blue or purple flowers ? Looks very good with the lime hydrangea
Your Garden’s are Beautiful… and I really like the way you casually walk us all through while explaining each plant, the good, and the bad of each. I have banned Knockout Roses from my Garden. I would love to know who named them because in my opinion and experience they are horrible. They do the exact opposite 🤔😂
Thank you so much! 😊 I really appreciate your feedback! Yes, I do have to agree that Knockout Roses are a lot more work than the company that developed them would have us believe. To me, truly easy-care are the panicle hydrangeas like the Little Limes I replaced them with in that one bed. What's your go-to flowering shrub or shrubs in your garden? 🌺 🌸
I just planted 5 Incrediball Hydrangeas on the right side of Our house and put down mulch, I had to dig out major amounts of small pebble stones just to plant them properly….😏. I put down heavy duty material but cut in to allow water to flow I did a major renovation on the whole Garden with all types of Perennial’s.. the next few days I’ll be tackling the left side ,which is 2x bigger but I know my course now… wish me luck..
Wow it sounds wonderful! You’re hard work will pay off! Re: pebbles and stones. I’ve got them too. Sometimes I watch garden videos and the gardener has nothing but nice loose soil as they dig. And I think, “What’s that like?” 🤣 We’ve had so much rain here, I’m itching to get outside again!
I absolutely love your garden and your videos ❤ I'm also in zone 7 in NJ and recently planted a few hydrangeas from Nikko Blue, Endless Summer and Little Lime. Do you protect your newly planted hydrangeas for the winter? If so, how? Thank you
Thank you so much Carmen! 😊 And hello to a fellow New Jersey gardener! Each of the hydrangeas you planted will be so pretty next year! Since they are each hardy in our zone 7, there's nothing "extra" you need to do like in colder climates where some may have to wrap them in burlap for protection. The main thing you want to make sure is that there's a good layer of mulch around the base of the shrubs. Mulch will keep the soil at a more consistent temperature and help to protect the roots as well as keep moisture in the soil. That's all I do each Fall. I rake away the leaves -- which I just did today for way too many hours -- 🤣-- and then I'll put down a good layer of mulch. Because we have so many garden beds, we order ours from a local nursery delivered in a bulk size. But, if you're just covering a small area, bagged mulch works just fine as well. 🙂I hope this answer helps!
Lovely garden! I too have many varieties of hydrangeas and love them all. I also have possibly 100 helleri hollies throughout my gardens (2 acres). It is one of my favorite plants in the beautiful way it hugs the ground and its density of foliage. Unfortunately I can't find them anywhere now or I would add more. I'm North of Atlanta, zone 7B. Where do you garden?
Thanks D! 😊 I’m in southern NJ, zone 7 near the coast. You’re the first gardener I’ve heard from who also has Helleri hollies! And your gardens sound amazing to have that many of them! (Jealous of your garden size!) At first when we added the Helleri, I wasn’t really a fan. But they have since won me over for how reliable they are. You described them perfectly! Their deep green color is wonderful! 💚 Have you looked online to buy them? That might be an option. 🤔🙂
You had me at Little Lime Hydrangea! I subscribed before I watched this beautiful tour! I planted a 4 hydrangea LL hedge at the beginning of Summer in Oklahoma and they’ve struggled with slugs but hopefully it’s under control now. What zone do you garden in?
Why thank you Annissa! I garden in zone 7, in southern New Jersey near the coast. We are hot and humid and soupy and gross this year since mid-July. (Just had to add that!) 😅Glad the slugs have calmed down for you! You will love your LL hedge: every year it will get better and better, and once they are well established in a few years, you'll find the care is minimal to keep them gorgeous! Keep me posted on how they're doing/growing! And I'm glad you've subscribed too!
How far is the center from your trees? Im wondering how far to plant from my house so it doesnt touch and i could walk behind. What is the width and height of yours?
Mine are around 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide. When planted 10 years ago, I think I spaced them about 4 feet apart from each other, measuring center to center. The Arborvitaes were put in a few years later, and they are probably about 3-ish feet back from the center of the Little Limes, due to the space I had to work with. I can sort of walk behind these, but it does take some quirky positions! 😀 I'd suggest planting your Little Lime Hydrangea about 6 feet away from your house. This way it won't touch the house, and you can walk behind. I hope this helps! PS -- Keep in mind that the 3 feet to 5 feet height and width are estimates and some shrubs will grow up and out to 5 feet while others might stay under 5 feet.
Love your garden. Very beautiful. I’m in central Jersey, got lots of rain from storm Henry . Will it hurt my hydrangeas with the wet clay soil ? Please help. Thanks
Thank you Linh! 😊 Are your hydrangeas the panicle type of hydrangeas like Little Lime or Limelight, for example? If so, they should be fine. I have heavy wet clay soil too, and these hydrangeas seem to handle the occasional tropical storms we’ve been getting the past couple of years here in New Jersey. I’m just leaving mine alone and letting the soil dry out a bit. (Of course more rain is on the way this weekend.) 😬🤣
@@linhmoberly4493 I bet your Fire Lights are gorgeous right now! I just planted my first one this year, so it's very small. I can't wait for how it will look in upcoming years! The first few years that I was growing our hydrangeas, there was a time I would stick my finger into the soil, below the mulch, just to see how wet the soil was. (The mulch would cover up how the soil even looked -- wet or dry, so I had to move the mulch to see and touch.) Now I've gotten pretty good at "knowing" the soil. As well, these Little Limes were planted in Fall 2014, so they are now well established and therefore don't need as much water as newer hydrangeas do. However, they still DO like water. This is a long way of saying that we don't run our sprinklers as much as we once did, but then again we've had so much rain this Summer too. How do your hydrangeas look right now?
1 of my fire light that I bought from Proven Winner online is doing well in a pot. The rest I need to wait and see. Please make more videos so I can learn more garden tips from u. Thanks 😊
Such beautiful hydrangeas!! You just sold me on the Little Limes for a smaller privacy hedge during the warmer months. How many years did it take for them to get as big as they are in this video?
Glad to sell you on Little Limes, Madeleine! 🙂 They fill out pretty quickly each Spring into Summer, which is nice. I’d say they were this size in their 3rd Summer. But they are still gorgeous while smaller too! 🌿🌸
I planted 10 arborvitae’s & 2 standard limelight’s . This summer was my first full year with them , ( just planted last summer) Not sure if I was watering enough I did hzvd a few yellow leaves & then also brown crunchy ones… so just last week we had a taste of hurricane Ida & it broke off a branch & wind was strong & flowers blew off I was in tears… so hoping after I prune next spring It will all come back , & I need to know if I’m watering enough…🥴. Thank you
I’m sorry you were in tears Kim. I can relate, as it IS heartbreaking to see our beloved plants torn apart by a bad storm. But Limelights are resilient and will recover. You may even see new growth start to develop where stems broke off. 🌱 As for watering, brown crunchy leaves will indicate the plants need more water. As you just planted the arborvitaes and hydrangeas last year, they are all still getting established and would appreciate water. Once the trees and hydrangeas get older, they can handle drought better. But for now and at least next season while they’re young, make sure to water them deeply every so often. It’s better to water deeply versus a light watering every day. I hope this helps put your mind at ease. 🙂
@@kimmie1957 You're welcome! 😊And by the way -- your Arborvitaes and Limelights remind me of my own -- although mine are Little Limes. I love how the flowers really stand out with the deep green of the arborvitaes! 🌲🌱
@@GardenSanity yes & I have 3 Anna’s magic balls in middle. + 2 butterfly bushes I love all the lime color ones .. , I want some coleus maybe next year also …☺️
Ooohhh it all sounds so pretty! What kind of butterfly bushes do you have? 🦋 I just filmed a video this morning about them and hope to have it up soon.
It seems like the little lime has a more saturated lime color than limelight and doesn’t get as white. True? I have a spindly ko as well. I dug it up and threw it in a pot with extra fertilizer and water. It seems better, but I’m not sure it’s worth the effort of saving because they’re always half price at Lowe’s after spring.
Good point about the sale on Knockouts! My own opinion on the color of Limelights and Little Limes is that sometimes I see really white looking flowerheads, sometimes they look way more ivory, and then sometimes they appear creamy white. Before they turn those colors, I see both a yellow-lime color as well as a pistachio pale green color. And all of these colors are on both my Little Limes AND my Limelight at the same time. 🙃🙂 So although I wonder if full sun makes the flowers whiter, I still see some that are less so. This probably doesn’t clearly answer your question. 🤔
I'm curious on how long you've had your little lime hydrangeas in the ground? I'm on year three of mine and it is still very puny I'm wondering if I should just stop cutting it back in the spring 🤔
Hi Cathy, I planted these Little Lime Hydrangeas in Fall 2014, so they've been in the garden for 8 years. When you say "puny" -- exactly what height and width are yours right now? Just curious. I planted new Little Lime Hydrangeas in a garden bed opposite to the garden bed shown in this video, and I don't expect them to achieve their full height and width for a few more years. Also, how much did you prune them in the Spring? I have a different video on pruning "new" or recently planted panicle hydrangeas, and my answers in that video may help you as well. 😀 🌿

It will all come back , & I need to know if I’m watering enough…🥴. Thank you
I’m sorry you were in tears Kim. 🙂
@@GardenSanity Omg thank you so much for that reassurance I appreciate you !!❤️😘.
+ 2 butterfly bushes
I love all the lime color ones .. , I want some coleus maybe next year also …☺️
Ooohhh it all sounds so pretty! What kind of butterfly bushes do you have? 🦋 I just filmed a video this morning about them and hope to have it up soon.
What zone are you in? Thanks for the tour ☺️
Hi Mary Lynn, I’m in zone 7 in southern NJ near the coast. What zone are you in? Glad you enjoyed the tour! 🙂
@@GardenSanity I’m in 6b north west PA. Was wondering if some of your plants would work in my zone. Beautiful gardens
@@marylynnhaynes7558 Thanks for the compliment! 😊 Yes, most if not all of my plants would well work for you!
Beautiful
