- In this week's vlog, Palm Springs hit 100 degrees for the first time of the year. Our pool was finally warm enough to swim in and my grandson stopped by for a visit. I also attended a Palm Springs Walk of Stars ceremony, for Academy Award nominated writer and producer Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia and Fellow Travelers), that made me very proud. And, a few other things happened, as well.
It was a fun week!

Watermelon is great to use in fusion water and also frozen sorbet too. I like purchasing the canned mandarins and then freezing the mandarins drain first. Once frozen can use food processor and blend the frozen mandarins. Delicious, nice, sweet treat. We planted some cucumber plants in containers. Hopefully will do well for processing to make pickles. Thinking about purchasing some tomatoes for planters too.
What a great tip T! Thank you for sharing that with us. Right after we first moved here I planted cherry tomatoes in pots and they did grow, but unfortunately they tasted more like lemons so I didn’t plant any more after that lol. Hopefully yours turn out better. 😄👍
What a fun video! The awards ceremony was so moving and heartfelt! Play definitely made a lot of points about love" and, acceptance! A plaque that was very well-deserved and earned. What a creative and brilliant young man. Is the pool very time-consuming and costly to maintain it looks so nice when it was all cleaned up and you have done a great job in the landscaping around it a very inviting area. It certainly looks like a lot of work to me especially in 100° weather! The positive side is you get to go in the pool and cool down!😊 Thanks steve! Love to you and Jim!!!

Hi Steve, I’ve only opened the umbrella on my back patio one day this spring! I’m loving the hotter weather though, hopefully I’ll be able to use it more in June. Thanks for bringing us the star ceremony, it brought back the poignant memories of that movie and the dear friends I have lost 🥲

I remember a dust storm when I lived in Wyoming 25 years ago. You couldn't see your hand 8n front of your face. I was scared silly!! Thankfully it only happened once!
Omg, I know what you mean. I drove through one here on the freeway a few years ago and it was like being in a very brown fog. All of the cars on the freeway almost had to come to a stop. Luckily we don’t get anything like that in Palm Springs ever. At least not so far. Just in some of the other desert cities along the freeway where most of the wind is. 😳🤞

Steve, another fascinating video. I know what you mean about watermelon. I grew up in New Jersey in the 60's close to small farms. The watermelon (and local produce) were delicious (so sweet and tasty) since the soil wasn't ruined by big agriculture yet or being picked too early. When I moved to the high desert the watermelons were tasteless from the big stores until I found a friend who ran a small produce market in Yucca Valley. She drove to the small farms in Fresno County, Tulare County and farms north of San Diego. When her partner died she closed the store. But all her produce was incredible tasting and she would cut it up so you could taste it. There is one farm that sells at our Joshua Tree Farmers market that still grows watermelon with the seeds (or without) and if it isn't to your liking he will give you your money back. But I have to wait a few more weeks until its available. Thanks for sharing Ron Nyswaner's ceremony. Isn't it great that a caring community encouraged him to sell his upper NY state home. 🍉🍓🍒🍉
Hi ER, thanks for sharing that with us. It’s funny because I was just thinking that maybe I should start going to the farmers market here in Palm Springs to check out their watermelon‘s. I was also thinking the same as you, that it must be because these mass produced watermelons are being grown and really bad soil and like all of the produce, they are picked way too soon and not give it a chance to ripen. And yes, aren’t we so considerate here lol? 😂 thanks for watching to the end of the video lol. 😎👍

I was lucky to get out of jury duty because of age. There's a cut off age where I live.
Hi John, unfortunately I think you could be 100 years old here in California and they will still call you for jury duty lol. 🤪 if you are over 70 though, apparently you can give a medical reason to get out of it and you don’t have to have a doctors excuse. Looking at your pool reminds me of just how much I don't miss my pool at my old house! Of course you would have to add a bunch of leaves in mine. Lol
The best way to pick a watermelon is 3 easy things. 1, look where the vine was, it should be brownish in color, not green. 2, a nice yellow spot and lastly 3 knock on it and you should hear a hollow sound. That's the best chance at a better one!
Philadelphia was an excellent movie. Another good movie like that was, Dallas Buyers Club w/Matthew McConaughey. I'm not an emotional movie watcher, but that one got to me.

Lol most people that I know who used to have pools I don’t miss them! 🤣 even though it could be a chore at times, we still love ours. I would not live here in the desert without a pool. And cleaning it is actually kind of fun and satisfying. Especially now that I’m retired.
Thanks for those watermelon tips. I actually do all three of those, which surprises me when the watermelons are still not very sweet. 😩 sometimes I think it depends on where they are imported from. I’m wondering if maybe different soils just promote more or less sweetness. I’m kind of baffled that so few of them are sweet, even though they seem perfectly ripe. 🤪 You have such a good memory. No, my brother Robert didn’t get us the pink by mango. I probably should get one for him though! 😄 Thanks Stacy!
My favorite part of this is the time that you spend with Mason. I can’t wait until I come to the desert, and I can fly my grandson out. This makes my heart so happy! Also, you did a phenomenal job with the pool. Our pool hasn’t opened yet. We have to call our pool man, and he’ll come out next week. Our pool is not heated, and the temperature in Knoxville isn’t quite hot enough to jump in yet. Maybe in a couple weeks. I hope y’all have a great weekend!

Your Grandson is (IMO) a very fortunate young man to have such an interesting and dynamic Grandpa (I lost mine at the ages of 5 and 9). And you Steve lucked out yourself I think 👌🏼

Hi Steve! Whew....yes...it seems to have been a windy spring there. I think I mentioned that we may consider moving from Colorado to Tucson. If we do so, we want to get a pool too. So, it is great to see what kind of work it takes to maintain your pool! It was fun to see your Grandson for a bit.

Hi Alan, even though cleaning the pool in the spring can be a bit annoying, we still love our pool. And wouldn’t change a thing. If you can find the right house in Tucson in the area that’s not too windy, that would definitely be a plus though lol! 😆👍
The 100F days have also arrived in Phoenix for the summertime! Jim got lucky with jury duty, I spent 4 weeks in October 2022 on a jury, haven’t been called since. Nice ceremony, I do so enjoy when I get the chance to walk in Palm Springs, seeing the stars, learning the history behind them. Thanks for today’s vlog. ❤️ Paul

Hi Jennifer, yes, I go in the pool once or twice every day. usually starting memorial day weekend and until September or October. The rest of the year the pool is pretty cold to go into, so we just use the spa. I love our pool but if I could I would go in every day of the year! I wouldn’t live here in this heat without a pool! Jim also goes on, but not as often. 😎👍
100 is baking. It usually gets 90 here. 100 is rare.
It’s usually very dry here and we have almost no humidity so 100 doesn’t feel too bad at all! For me anyway it’s the humidity that melts me! 🥵
@steveinpalmspringsca Yes we have a lot of humidity in Illinois. It can get 100% humidity on hot summer days. A lot of my family moved to Arizona, Georgia and Florida over the years because of their health issues. They couldn't breath here. One day I may need to move. So far I'm healthy.
Our cactus is the same way. Once a year an arm grows out of it and one single flower blooms and only lasts a day. Have you tried using frozen fruit? It's usually better than fresh fruit. At age 72 you no longer need to do jury duty. Just fill out the back of the summons. Your grandson is cute. I love your pool and area around it. I enjoyed this. You and Jim take care and stay safe.

Your pool looked so inviting! I hope you remembered the sun screen. This time of the year you ought to consider getting your fruit and veggies from a local farmer’s market. Not only fresher but it helps out the local farmers. They’re bound to have better tasting watermelon. Take care.

We’re also in Palm Springs, been here since 2017. I believe it was last year, during Spring, the wind was really bad and there was a wind gust that literally knocked over our grill! Thankfully the damage was minimal, but we had never expected that to happen, crazy.

Hi Shannon, that’s a great question. To be honest though I don’t think so. Marcia and the grandkids only moved to California a few years ago. Before that they lived in St. Louis and I rarely saw them. Are usually only once a year. Now that the kids are grown they just call him Jim. Thanks for asking and thanks for sharing. 😄👍
Do you give your plants a miracle grow or a booster to help them out? I fertilize mine once a month, and that seems to help them

Hey Steve, Lavender Patio plant blooms do come back you do need to clip them around 50 percent and it does take a while put will bloom again in the year.

Hi Reid, it’s bougainvillea. They really are beautiful but they’re paper thin and get blown into the pool and all over the yard, but I still love having them in the yard. 😎👍

Hi Steve..I don't know about there but here where I live in Florida when you turn 70 you don't have to do jury duty if you don't want to.
Hi Janet, we checked into that, but in California there’s no age limit for serving on jury duty. I guess you can serve until you’re 120 lol. But, apparently after you were 70 years old here, you can give a medical excuse and it doesn’t have to be from your doctor and they will excuse you. So I guess they make it easy for you too be excused from jury duty if you want to be excused. I don’t really mind serving once in a while, but it’s kind of ridiculous that they seem to summon us almost every single year! 😳😩🤪

For less than “stellar” fruit 🍉 🍍🍓this time of year may I suggest (if you don’t already have one) something like a Ninja creami? It’s great for low or even no sugar sorbets which you could enjoy in your lovely pool area ⛱️

I did some research on jury duty in California after the age of 70. You can request to be released from duty if you're over the age of 70 and claim a medical issue without being required to provide a written doctor's statement. I suppose frequent urination or the need for frequent naps could be a medical excuse.
