95% of Joan Jett's music is covers...she has only written/co-written maybe 30 songs. Most singers don't write their own songs. Doesn't matter though, Joan Jett still rocks! Love that woman...
Keaton Smith I think it has a glam feeling to it, like T-Rex or Sweet. I've never heard it (actually, I didn't know this version existed), but it's awesome!
Gustavo Nogueira There is only the Arrows lead singer still alive and I doubt very much that Jett would want to sing with him. That would draw attention that she's not the original artist. Besides, Alan Merrill is so good on stage these days he'd probably kick her ass. She's never going to risk it.
No, I totally agree with you, please don't misunderstand me, it would be great if Jett performed the song with Merrill. That would be a great rock n roll moment! I would love to see and hear that!
I love the scenes in this of them strolling around London in the mid seventies. So much like the Beatles in "Help!" or "Hard Day's Night". Such a great era for music.
I love Alan and the boys so much now and forever .I do think his boyish looks and rich manly voice may have gone against him sometimes. His range is amazing and quite soft on Touch Too Much and on other songs he sounds quite silky. On I Love ROCK and ROLL,Alans vocal is quite deep.Used to think Freddie had the best voice but now IM NOT SO SURE.They are and were, both so amazing vocally, but Alan and the ARROWS so ....sadly overlooked. As an adult now and not a teen,I CAN APPRECIATE THEIR HUGE TALENT.thank you all for these great downloads and bringing the ARROWS MUSIC TO ALL GENERATIONS.iTS MY birthday tomorrow and will be giving my 45s a spin especially FIRST HIT and the singles of my faves in the next few days.x
Ah finally an original verson which is rare on here. I have always loved this song danced to it millions of times back in 75 when it first came out and still do. Dont make records like these anymore which is a shame.
Joan Jett gets so much credit for this song because no-one remembers that Arrows recorded the original, including me, until recently. This version is just as good as the JJ version, so why it didn't become a hit in its own right beats me.
The Arrows version didn't get promoted by their label and was only released in England. Joan Jett's version got major corporate promotion from her label and was released world wide.
KeithTheKing Sometimes an artist takes an original song and vastly improves on it, such as 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' originally recorded by Robert Hazard, but vastly improved by Cyndi Lauper, but in this case, The Arrows version is every bit as good as JJ's version, and JJ doesn't improve on it one bit. It's an identi-kit copy.
vinylsurrender timing, they released in the 70's in london when the "punk" scene was still in its infancy, so there was very little following then. Business is business, joan took it farther but still recognized there contribution.
I'm ashamed to admit this, but up until FIVE MINUTES AGO, I didn't even know that Joan Jett's version was a cover! (For the record I still LOVE her version!). And THIS is LEGEN--wait for it--DARY!!!
😎 I just found out this was the original version of this song today and I must say i love it! I first heard the Britney Spears version and then the Joan Jett and Blackhearts version. They all have something to offer. I am glad this song is still popular today. I can see why it gets covered quite a bit. It is simple and catchy song that isn't too hard to sing along to or follow. This is rock pop at its finest probably. Best, Marvin 😀 #iloverockandroll #iloverocknroll

@Ken Fullman The original lyrics in a magazine by the Arrows 1975 UK. merrilly-merrilly-we-go.tumblr.com/post/171990940230/the-first-time-the-lyrics-of-the-arrows-song-i
It says on Wikipedia that Arrows performed this song for the first time ever on TV and were immediately were offered their own TV show on the strength of this performance - and their show ran for 2 seasons. However, the producer of all their records was legendary hit maker Mickey Most - and he was so furious with them for signing the TV deal without cutting him in on the deal that he refused to release any of their records whilst the show ran. As a result they were on TV for two season, hugely popular... with no records to sell. Mickey Most, you utter bastard.
This is true, they are the only band in history of the music industry to have chart hit singles before their TV series and no new records released during both of the band's TV series, 28 shows in all, with repeats that's 56 airings of the Arrows TV show. This stand-off and embargo of the Arrows was due to an acrimonious and confrontational relationship between the Arrows manager Ian Wright and Arrows record company chief Mickie Most. It's tragic in hindsight. The band only lasted three years as a result. They would have certainly had at least three more hit singles had there been recordings released during the TV series.
An often discussed topic here, thanks very much for your opinion. It's a fact that in the music business hits don't happen by magic, they happen because of heavy promotion. Of course the song has to be great but without promotion the best songs and versions can be buried in obscurity. The Arrows record label dropped the ball on this band. They didn't promote the record but the Arrows got one TV appearance with the song which got them a weekly TV series in England, which is where Jett got to hear the song. Joan Jett's record company gave her skillful aggressive promotion on her version with the guidance of industry giant Neil Bogart (Boardwalk Records) and it was a huge hit in the USA. Conversely The Arrows never released their version outside of England. Thank god for the internet so people can know who the original artist is, since the American rock press very rarely describe it as being an Arrows seventies song.
chltmdwp i don't think its necessarily who made the song better because there is a lot of people who have sampled and covered songs but they weren't better then the original. I think KeithTheKing was right by saying its about promotion.
jazzmin lin A great song recorded well without strong promotion will not get to the general public. Hit records are not magic. They take hard work on the business side. Radio, TV, and magazine promotion. It all takes money and hard work. It's a good thing that in spite of poor promotion from their label the Arrows 1975 version of "I Love Rock N Roll" (as performed on their one and only TV appearance with the song on the show "45" in England) got them a weekly TV series in 1976 leading to many covers of the song after they performed it on their TV series a number of times. In essence they were promoting their song which as a result got them a lot of covers.
Warner Brothers act Superfly, a band in Japan have just covered "I Love Rock N Roll" and it went gold two days after release on Dec. 2nd 2015. The song is a hit again.
+KeithTheKing- Superfly (Shiho Ocha) is the biggest female artist in Japan right now. The cover she did of 'I Love Rock N Roll' is big news in Japan right now.
Merrill, the lead singer, was really cute and the outfits plus their hair really looked nice! reminded me of early 00s fashion and hairdos of rocker guys
I saw Arrows singer Alan Merrill performing "I Love Rock N Roll' with Ian Lloyd's Stories last week Feb 23rd at the Cutting Room in New York. He was amazing. Ian did "Brother Louie", it was a fantastic show.
He still does lots of shows, mainly in New York but he also performs in Japan, the UK and Germany. In fact Alan Merrill is the only surviving original Arrows band member. Paul and Jake have passed away.
I saw her dancing there by the record machine I knew she must have been about seventeen The beat was going strong, playing my favorite song And I could tell it wouldn't be long Till she was with me, yeah, me And I could tell it wouldn't be long Till she was with me, yeah, me, singin' I love rock 'n' roll So put another dime in the jukebox, baby I love rock 'n' roll So come and take your time and dance with me She smiled, so I got up and asked for her name "That doesn't matter, " she said, "'cause it's all the same." I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?" And next we were moving on And she was with me, yeah, me And next we were moving on And she was with me, yeah, me, singin' I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?" And next we were moving on And she was with me, yeah, me, singin'
Love this original version, even better than the fabulous Joan Jett. It is true that we have missed so much in the States. I thought we were one of the leading places for rock n roll....I now find out that I was wrong about that. So many other countries have offered so much to this music. I am loving that we can now discover the history of this great music genre. Thanks to all who post this info!!! Rock on forever!!!!
The age when I fall in love with old school music. And fall in love with Avril and Guitar Hero ;D I´m 17 now. Go on lilttle blackstar, you listen to the right music. Greetings from Czech Republic
I cut my teeth on Joan's version. Having said that much, she stayed faithful to the source material. Have waited for awhile to hear the original, myself...well worth it!Kudos...
Alan is a great guy as well. Unfortunately he is the last surviving member of the group. He still puts out tunes to this day. Constantly touring Japan and the UK.
What a killer sound - can't believe I've never heard it before. Jett's version and this both have a distinct sound that I love. Dude's voice is amazing.
Alan is the coolest dude ever, i met him last week in queens New York on a Troma set. We were in the same scene. He was like I wrote I love rock and roll, lol. He is the best.
Arrows singer Alan Merrill was playing in Greenwich Village at the now famous Cafe Wha? New York City in spring of 1966, a few months before Jimi Hendrix made his debut there as Jimmy James (and the blue flames).
The lead singer Alan Merrill has tons and tons of songs up on youtube. I just looked and there are hundreds of studio and live clips. He keeps himself busy making new music!
The Arrows had hit singles prior to "I Love Rock N Roll" / "Touch Too Much" got up to # 6 in the UK charts in 1974, "My Last Night With You" got up to # 22 in the UK charts. Yes, it's true. The band Arrows had very little promotion with "I Love Rock N Roll"- just one TV appearance in 1975 and no BBC radio play. But Joan Jett's 1982 version only made it to a peak of # 4 in the UK charts. It was well known there as a an Arrows cover from them doing the song often on their weekly TV series in 1976.
This is the original version and it might not have been a hit for this band. But it was the hit that launched Joan Jett and She never said that she didn't write this song. She took complete credit for the success of this and gave no credit to this band at all.
Their record company didn't promote this record and the band in general after their first three singles made the UK charts. In spite of their popularity on TV and the music press they only released 6 singles from 1974-76 and "I Love Rock N Roll" was their least promoted single of the 6. In fact, when they had their weekly TV series in 1976 the band had no records released at all due to a legal situation between the band's management and record label. History shows the Arrows were with the wrong record label. Unable to release new records and held to their recording contract the band broke up in 1977.
First i did hear this version but it was years ago and then I heard theJoan Jett one couple years ago and thought it was the same song and now I found that song again and someone told me this is the original. Ugh there are too many I love rock 'n roll songs. But luckily i wasnt so stupid that I would think the Britney Spears one would be the original at least.
Congrats to everyone who knows that this is the original
:D
Thanks
Never knew Joan Jett's version was a cover. I have to say I do love this version
95% of Joan Jett's music is covers...she has only written/co-written maybe 30 songs. Most singers don't write their own songs. Doesn't matter though, Joan Jett still rocks! Love that woman...
I thought Joan Jett was the original, the I was told it was a cover and I listened to this and I love it even more. Amazing.
Joan Jett's version is a cover, 7 years after the original version was released by the Arrows.
This song was ahead of its time
I never knew Joan Jett's version was a cover. Wow, I hope he licensed this to her instead of selling the rights.
Yes, Arrows kept the rights.
I like this original version.
Who did the original?
+Hmu babes
The Arrows wrote and recorded the original version in 1975.
Everybody else is doing a cover.
The Arrows. They wrote it too.
Aaa...finally the original 😍
I love the sound to this version. It's got more grit and grime. Makes me really love rock and roll.
Keaton Smith I think it has a glam feeling to it, like T-Rex or Sweet. I've never heard it (actually, I didn't know this version existed), but it's awesome!
The original version before joan jetts cover.
This should have been a number one when it was originally released!
Just imagine this music being sung by The Arrows and Joan Jett together!
Gustavo Nogueira There is only the Arrows lead singer still alive and I doubt very much that Jett
would want to sing with him. That would draw attention that she's not the original artist. Besides,
Alan Merrill is so good on stage these days he'd probably kick her ass. She's never going to risk it.
Because of that, I said "imagine"!

Ok, don't get angry ._.

I just found it by pure accident - happy one indeed.
This song is ahead of its time to be honest. Woulda thought it came out in the mid to late 80s, not 1975
Joan! It's Marvin! Your cousin, Marvin Jett, remember that new sound you're looking for? Well listen to this!
Joan Jett gets so much credit for this song because no-one remembers that Arrows recorded the original, including me, until recently. This version is just as good as the JJ version, so why it didn't become a hit in its own right beats me.

Why does Joan Jett get so much credit for this song. This song was kick ass way before Joan covered it.
An often discussed topic here, thanks very much for your opinion. It's a fact that in the music business hits don't happen by magic, they happen because of heavy promotion. Arrows the best
Heck of a song! kinda addictive \m/

Right, I know that Alan Merrill has been playing a lot of live shows this year. Three hours on stage and over 30 songs? That's amazing!
The first positive cross pacific rock band. I used to rush home to watch these guys. They gave Marc Bolan and Suzi Quatro a massive leg up to fame.
I like all covers of this song. It's such a strong and well constructed song it can be done many different ways.
The many many musically varied covers show that to be true!
394 people Didn't know this song originally wrote by the arrows
395 people's girlfriends slept with the Arrows!
I saw her dancing there by the record machine
I knew she must have been about seventeen
The beat was going strong, playing my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till she was with me, yeah, me
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till she was with me, yeah, me, singin'
I love rock 'n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock 'n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
She smiled, so I got up and asked for her name
"That doesn't matter, " she said, "'cause it's all the same."
I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"

As always, british groups fill the world with a good song.

I've known for the past 5 years
Most people that click on this video already know that.
all people think that this song its written by joan jett and its so sad that the people who wrote the song have less credit

Thanks to the internet more and more people are aware that Jett's version is a cover. It just takes a bit of curiosity and a google search.
I KNEW that I had heard THIS version YEARS ago at "I don't know where."
I thought that I might have dreamed hearing this until now.
1975 is a long time ago and that's when the Arrows were peaking in their short time as a band in England. They were only together from 1974-'77.
I played a support slot for one of Alan's shows when he was over in the UK. Hes a really nice guy. It was a real pleasure :)
Jon Rose Wow, that's so cool
I just found out that Joan Jett's version is just a cover, and also that my whole life is a lie.
We're in the same boat, Kenji.
Arrows were amazing but so badly managed. No Alan Merrill original. No song fact.
very advanced song for 70´s...great!!!!!!
How so? I grew up in the 70's and alot of rock was like this.

@Gnarly Chuck you obviously didn't grow up in the 70s. We also had this. That's why music has gone downhill since the 70s.
The best version, Alan.
original versión
The age when I fall in love with old school music. And fall in love with Avril and Guitar Hero ;D I´m 17 now. Go on lilttle blackstar, you listen to the right music. Greetings from Czech Republic
I cut my teeth on Joan's version. Having said that much, she stayed faithful to the source material. Have waited for awhile to hear the original, myself...well worth it!Kudos...
Still sound great what a amazing
I wish I would of known that this is the original band that wrote this song sooner
Ditto. I always thought Joan Jett's version was the original. I am slightly ashamed of myself as a rocker.
Alan is a great guy as well. Unfortunately he is the last surviving member of the group. He still puts out tunes to this day. Constantly touring Japan and the UK.
rockinrodney5000 me too
This makes so much more sense.
Yes.
This song is a hit again and will be 4ever :)
A 1975 song still sounds so fresh even in 2013... My previous generation rocked !!! xD
This is realy art
Esto es verdadero arte
awesome music
A most interesting band. The group lasted less than three years but got a lot of fine work done.
What a killer sound - can't believe I've never heard it before. Jett's version and this both have a distinct sound that I love. Dude's voice is amazing.
I'm so glad i found this! His voice gives me goosebumps
After hearing loads of others sing this, I think that this is the best. But that's my opinion.
Terrific song will live forever
Alan is the coolest dude ever, i met him last week in queens New York on a Troma set. We were in the same scene. He was like I wrote I love rock and roll, lol. He is the best.
😳 no way!!!
Very good!!
its original Rock and Roll !!!
What a masterpiece!
the lead singer is cute 😍😉
they all are
good looking guys and good song
never knew it was a cover. this one is the best :) thx
Always fun to watch this band! They were great! I really like the London street scenes.
Arrows singer Alan Merrill was playing in Greenwich Village at the now famous Cafe Wha? New York City in spring of 1966, a few months before Jimi Hendrix made his debut there as Jimmy James (and the blue flames).
Why have i never heard this before? This is awesome
bmo maybe you gotten used to listening the joan jett version
cause u r bmo
esta es la version original.....espectacular
The lead singer Alan Merrill has tons and tons of songs up on youtube. I just looked and there are hundreds of studio and live clips. He keeps himself busy making new music!
With his bands Runner after the Arrows and Vodka Collins before. Also with Meat Loaf and Rick Derringer. Solo stuff too, lots of it!
It was well known there as a an Arrows cover from them doing the song often on their weekly TV series in 1976.
brilliant the Arrows great band and great guys j vincent edwards
You're great on the Arrows TV show, J Vincent Edwards!! It's on TH-cam!
thanks mate love and peace vinny
WOW
This should have been their biggest hit in the 70s. Just bought an Anthology just to get this great classic.
Mother Of God... This is epic :D
Totally. Bloody brilliant.
I Love Rock n Roll
Still love Joan's version; but the Arrows are easily able to hold their own well here. Would have loved to have heard more from them.
Yousif
she made him a fortune from her version!!!
Britney Spears cover did make more money for the Arrows than the Joan Jett's version. Fact. I guess Britney sold a lot more albums than Jett.
I had no idea this was the original.
Lmao
Britney Spears was weird to listen to and watch
@@tamkplays3732 you're right
Knew I remembered a guy singing it.
well...this is the original from 1975
I just love Alan Merrill!
Joan did a true remake. She didn’t change a thing.
Except the pronouns.
stjxp Ironic, even.
