Art of Fighting is the first game for the SNES that I bought with my own money. I had grown tired of NHL Stanley Cup (the game that came with our SNES) & never got into Star Fox (the first game my older brother bought). Had a history with AOF too. I use to play the arcade version at a local comic book shop. As tough as the SNES port can be, I found the Arcade version much more difficult, though maybe it was set up that way to eat more quarters. I feel the SNES version plays a lot like the Arcade. One thing the SNES port has over the Genesis version is that when your health is low your fighter's stance changes which is your cue that you can initiate the Super Death blow attacks. Pretty handy since unsurprisingly neither port would have the visual damage effects of the Arcade. And as THGM mentioned you get a comprehensive ending on the SNES version that otherwise gets told in Art of Fighting 2 so that was a nice bonus to the package too.
Art of Fighting is also notable for having not one but two Barcode Battler card sets made for it - one with hand-drawn art, the other with pixel art of fighting!
Might wanna know that King herself has a strong resemblance to a Muay Thai-using henchwoman from the show China White, performed by Dutch Muay Thai action actress Saskia Van Rijswijk. Kasumi Todoh's own story mode, while relatable, is also funny in its own right as it basically amounts to her own wild goose chase in her pursuit and search for Ryo Sakazaki, all just to avenge her family's honor. Doesn't help matters that she has a rather poor command in English and has a hard time navigating her way in Glasshill within Mexico, which makes her a fish out of water.
I got love jones for the snk fighting games. They had some very unique gameplay elements such, you can see bruises on your character, day and night fighting. Let's not forget about cool music, unique fighting gameplay, storyline, some of the coolest characters but what dragged doen snk games were the unforgiving cheap bosses, AI, and unbalanced characters is what dragged the game down
I loved art of fighting as a kid. Glad you decided to put a spotlight on it especially with current developments with SNK as well as Capcom with the fighting game genre.
Secret Art Ultimate Technique: (1) you must have full spirit bar (2) you must have red/low health bar(3) then perform a quarter circle then press C+A pressing the C button a frame earlier than the A button. This will perform Ryo's dad's super from AOF2 which inflicts every available punch, kick, and special in the game ending with a dragon punch. Note: it can cover half screen as it starts with a leap but can be evaded or blocked by opponent and also half a spirit bar is exhausted when attempting the art form
10:04 I think that's debatable. In the Van Damme classic Double Impact, early on Van Damme fights a bully in his dojo and he looks EXACTLY like Dan. He even has the pink gi, pony tail, and is a bit of a douche'. And that came out in 1991. I think Dan is based on that character imo.
AoF3 was visually very poor... and that was because the new animation, the character design, and even the arenas where very poor... to me it was the weakest of all.
AOF has such a great story and really cool art mechanics are unique but tough to learn I really hope for a new AOF game with new and old returning characters
"Art of Fighting 1&2" will FOREVER hold a special place in my heart. I owned them both on the original NEO GEO home system. And cherish every OST that came out for them. OSU!!! 🤜👊👊🤛
AoF is rather unique. It took a methodical approach to vs fighting. You couldn't spam specials because it costs meter, you had to make them count. Character would also take visible damage, which was cool. Awesome backgrounds and OST. On the other hand I hated the controls, input lag and esp. the pressure sensitive stuff in AoF2. I played 1 and 2 a ton as I had them both on AES. The AI was incredibly cheap and could only be beaten by exploits.
Everything I played on Neo-Geo platform was fun. Not always more memorable than the competiton, but always fun. Never regretted spending precious quarters on those games.
You have no idea about this game's popularity, in fact, this entire loading your power gauge for special attacks began with Art of Fighting. And Art of Fighting 2, the hype around the second game was second to none, goodness, so many memories.... and you really can't forget World Heroes too... SNK was the best arcade platform ever.
@KamranConsultant4Hire Everywhere, particularly Otumva, Iowa. I also grew up in the UK partially, partially in Asia too. So my experiences are rather cross continental.
The biggest detail that I took from Art of Fighting was their use of USS Independence as a stage, for John Crawley. A Marine assigned to the carrier doing shady stuff on the side for Mr. Big feels pretty appropriate for the time period.
As a 13-14 year old playing this in the arcade back in the day was awesome. I was very into SNK fighters back then. Stories were darker and the music was awesome. Playing Fatal Fury and having Raidens stage music and Geese’s stage music was just the coolest shit. Too bad the snes couldn’t replicate the guitar sounds but I still played my home ports like crazy
The Spirit Gauge in Art of Fighting, evolved in SF and other fighting games into what we call the Super Meter, which evolved again, into a Hyper Meter. Samurai Shodown kinda shared this same meter with a different way to charge it up.
Art of Fighting kicks major ass. I also really like the Genesis version. Art of Fighting 2 is THE hardest fighting game I have ever played. AoF 3 is absolutely stunning.
Probably played Art of Fighting before Street Fighter, so I do have fond memories of it, despite as a kid only managing to reach the 3rd opponent at best. Both World Warrior and this were sitting at an ice cream shop at my home town and when my parents took us there, they would give me a few quarters to play as well. AoF was way more eye catching with it's huge sprites and impactful moves, but given how hard it was, I ended up most of the times just playing World Warrior which even with my lackluster skills I was able to progress far further in the game (usually until Vega at least). Still something about AoF always draw me near. It did feel like a journey with the story and bonus games actually affecting the game. But as in most SNK games, it was so ball bustingly hard after a while. Maybe there's a trick to have an easier time, but as a kid it was impossible to progress in the game, let alone finish it. Even later on MAME at home, I spent a virtual fortune trying to beat Mr Karate. AOF 2 only played once even though ironically it's the only one of the three I currently own for the NEO GEO. So I barely have any opinions about it. AOF 3 also have a bit of a soft spot for it. I like the smooth animations and it being a bit more combo focused compared to the other two. One might say it strayed too far from the other two where positioning and carefully choosing when to strike and with what attack was more important, but still by 1996 that formula felt a bit dated and I doubt people would like that given even MK introduced huge combos by that time (also Street Fighter Alpha and KI among many others).
HI @tophatgamingmanchannel . There is one easter egg in art of fighting 2. Those men in black who are reporting to ¨Geese howard¨in almost every stage. and if you are getting closer to final stage they get closer to in the background.. Great review by the way =)
Isn’t art of fighters coming back . I thought that’s what they said and samurai showdown was also coming back but not as a fighting game. Art of fighters 3 was a beautiful game I wish they would bring art of fighters back like capcom does with their older games.
It is coming back, hence why thought it was wise to produce a recap of the series history. I'll make an upload next week giving my thoughts on the return.
Cmon You don't know about Art of Fighting's super moves\desperation moves ? Energy bar isn't only used for the super death blow. Play the game using Ryo or Robert. Once you have only only 10% of your hp left, fill the energy bar to full and input qcf A+C Just don't push A and C at the same time, more like qcf+C then while holding your thumb on the C button press A.
King is like Joanne of Arc and Catalina de Erauso, an historical figure who was also called "la monja alférez", the second lieutenant nun. These three women hid their identity acting as men.
Actually it did fall… … John Crawley was considered for inclusion in The King of Fighters XIV along with Jack Turner and Micky Rogers as his teammates, however they did not make the cut due to Art of Fighting being underrated and forgotten compared to Fatal Fury.
14:02 I believe you have to play the SNES version and complete the story on a "normal" or "MVS" game level or harder than that to find out what happens after. The ending in the SNES version sets up the plot for Art of Fighting 2, which would end up getting a Japan-only SNES release.
AoF 2 was the best of the 3... I saw this game in arcade form and it was incredible... AoF 2 had great sprite graphics, great sound desing and music. It was a visceral game.
This game may not have aged well in terms of game play. But everything else about it is good. People keep on forgetting that this game was one of the most important games for the evolution of fighting games. Those mechanics are so important that even more 3D fighters are taking those mechanics and adding them to their game(DOA, Tekken, ane maybe VF)
AOF 3 was clearly the nail in the coffin for this series. Awful character designs, wonky animations and game mechanics. Boring stage design and absolutely forgettable music. The game's story didn't help it either. I'm truly hoping the new AOF game, will redeem this franchise.👍
Been playing these games since I was a kid (Born in 85) and only now I've realized Mr. Big shares a lot of coincidences with bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin. Tall, bald, mustache, sunglasses, he invented the funk fingers (two pieces of drumsticks tied to his fingers to play the bass strings with a percussive sound) when recorded Peter Gabriel's album "So" (86). He is algo famous for playing the Chapman Stick and has a group called The Stick Men.
Please do videos on Tekken 3, Mortal Kombat 3, DOA2, & Soul Calibur 3. As well as videos on the Bazblue series, Power Rangers battle for the Grid, Pokken Tournament, Persona 4 Arena, the Godzilla fighting games, SNK's World Heroes series, Primal Rage, Tobal no. 1, Mace the Dark Age, & Sonic the Fighters
Ryo & Robert are probably 10 or 12yrs younger than Terry & Andy Bogard. I say that because a young Geese Howard is the final boss in art of fight 2 and he killed Terry & Andy pops Jeff Bogard when they was kids.
i remember the first time i aw AOF2 , my eyes almost melted, the desperation moves, the larger than life sprites, AOF was evrything that SF was not.....SPECTACULAR, and fight me, RYO is such a cool character and only 1uped by KYO when KOF was a thing.
Aof they did three games took all the best characters and put them in the kof series play did the same thing with fatal fury I'm glad both of these games are getting new releases later on this year and I'm here for it
I've always wondered about Mr. Karate with the AWESOME Tengu mask. Does that mask have like special powers, coz in SNK vs Capcom he was a bitch to fight and his aura+sprite was different colours? Please explain if you can Sebastian? 🙏🏻
Prettiest fighters of the era and the ugliest controls. Mechanics were innovative alright, but rather pointless since even the standard special moves required a very strict input. The idea was to make specials come out faster or slower depending on how quickly player would enter the command, but I bet no one ever even noticed that since special moves were so hard thus rare to execute. For example, DP input would register once out of three or four tries. Good luck doing Haoh Sho Koh Ken or, god forbid, Desperation Moves. Not to mention that even these Super Death Techniques can be interrupted or neutralized by any character via mere jab. And AoF3 was the worst offender. Although more responsive, its mechanics were outright atrocious. Pursuits, parry, full crouch, partial crouch, wrong blocking, soft knockdown, hard KD, quick KD, stagger, stagger KD... What all this shit means is following: too much overlapping technical baggage and your character will be on the ground for most of the time. Oh, and the roster in 3 was probably one of the most unappealing ones in the entire fighting game genre history. A guy with a pelican, a hill Billie chick with a whip, a yuppie, a ninja reject, a poor man's Pullum Purna, a gay-looking stand-in for Mr. Big, a boring generic japanese chick in traditional garbs, an inevitable karate dude trope and a lame Hulk knock-off for a boss. The player select screen alone is quite off-putting.
The animations in 3 were SOOOOO good looking... shame it didn't catch on. Still, actually creating a such a cohesive story/universe is hard to deny. SNK definitely knew how to tell a story.
Art of Fighting 3 is the closest we ever got to a Tekken style 2D fighter. And it’s brilliant it flows so well, arguably the most underrated 2D fighter ever.
@@Ticr00 AOF2 had the worst gameplay to me. But AOF3 did have an unappealing roster, the threequel's final bosses should've been Krauser at age 26, and Rugal at age 34.

Agreed but they are doing that for Samurai Showdown, no confirmation yet as to what AOF4 will be. I want it to be a classic beat'emup
OSU!!! 🤜👊👊🤛
King is SNK’s first female fighter
No. The first one was Mai
@@paloddinkhanhueso3432 mai debuted in Fatal Fury 2 in Dec 1992, Art of Fighting came out in Sept 1992
AOF1 was difficult but, beatable. However then 2nd game had brutal AI. 3rd game felt easy compared to the previous ones
this game rise but never fall off my heart still playing 2 and 3 till this day
Fatal Fury 2 was more competition to Street Fighter
Aof and snk are legendary but the game was to dam hard but I love there characters ryo and robert and king are legends
Fantastic video
Everything I played on Neo-Geo platform was fun. Not always more memorable than the competiton, but always fun. Never regretted spending precious quarters on those games.
You have no idea about this game's popularity, in fact, this entire loading your power gauge for special attacks began with Art of Fighting. And Art of Fighting 2, the hype around the second game was second to none, goodness, so many memories.... and you really can't forget World Heroes too... SNK was the best arcade platform ever.
Was it that popular?
What country/city are you speaking of? Can't be the USA, everyone's still stuck on Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat
@@KamranConsultant4Hire I remember that Pakistan like this series?
@KamranConsultant4Hire Everywhere, particularly Otumva, Iowa. I also grew up in the UK partially, partially in Asia too. So my experiences are rather cross continental.
@@LuminescentShine yes it was popular in Pakistan, especially AOF2
Robert and Andy Garcia were my favourites, I used them whenever they appeared in KoF .
AOF 2 is difficult, but you can easily cheese the CPU.
@@MrRyuken555 I keep hearing that but take brutal ass whoopings instead or I barely win with all of my energy gone being one light punch away from KO.
@@MrRyuken555You have to learn the grab exploit
The sound effects were the greatest
The way wyler stands back up has no frame rate whatsoever 🤣
HI @tophatgamingmanchannel . There is one easter egg in art of fighting 2. Those men in black who are reporting to ¨Geese howard¨in almost every stage. and if you are getting closer to final stage they get closer to in the background.. Great review by the way =)
Rise and Fall and Rise again SNK is in the works making a New Art Of Fighting game.
Cmon
You don't know about Art of Fighting's super moves\desperation moves ?
Energy bar isn't only used for the super death blow.
Play the game using Ryo or Robert.
Once you have only only 10% of your hp left, fill the energy bar to full and input
qcf A+C
Just don't push A and C at the same time, more like qcf+C then while holding your thumb on the C button press A.
and?
@poindextertunes
And it should have been mentioned in the video that Art of Fighting is the game that invented Super moves. 🥸
King is like Joanne of Arc and Catalina de Erauso, an historical figure who was also called "la monja alférez", the second lieutenant nun. These three women hid their identity acting as men.
Art of Fighting never fell, just moved over to King of Fighters
Actually it did fall…
… John Crawley was considered for inclusion in The King of Fighters XIV along with Jack Turner and Micky Rogers as his teammates, however they did not make the cut due to Art of Fighting being underrated and forgotten compared to Fatal Fury.
Art of Fighting2 reminds me of the movie Road House
MR KARATE!!!
It tried to be like Virtua Fighter
@@LuminescentShine Well, it immensely failed.🤦♂️
Been playing these games since I was a kid (Born in 85) and only now I've realized Mr. Big shares a lot of coincidences with bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin. Tall, bald, mustache, sunglasses, he invented the funk fingers (two pieces of drumsticks tied to his fingers to play the bass strings with a percussive sound) when recorded Peter Gabriel's album "So" (86). He is algo famous for playing the Chapman Stick and has a group called The Stick Men.
I remember seeing Art of Fighting in arcades and laughing at it because of how similar it was to Street Fighter.
ryu + ken masters = ryo sakazaki.
But he's cooler than both of them!!
Not weird just plain better good times in 92 a challenge that is what makes the world of fighting fun the man has spoken
We should get the battle damage feature back on current FGs...
I’ve never liked the zooming in and out. Especially on ports to other systems that weren’t as smooth as the Neo Geo.
I’m here for an SNK ARPG! The Blazblue action roguelike was amazing so why not?
Amazing this series had the first supers
interesting that they came from bonus rounds
It was loud, it was exaggerated, and very violent, it was everything we wanted!!
Art of Fighting SNES OST has the superior soundtrack over the Neo Geo version.
Bro love your vids! Notifications always on, so i see u doin SNK now, are u goin to do a bio on KOF?👍
When I was a kid in the early nineties I thought Robert looked SO COOL. I wanted to dress just like him lol.
Ryo & Robert are probably 10 or 12yrs younger than Terry & Andy Bogard. I say that because a young Geese Howard is the final boss in art of fight 2 and he killed Terry & Andy pops Jeff Bogard when they was kids.
Hope they make a reboot of this game with a wider roster of characters....with a 3d approach...
AoF2 was such a cool game and i still love it,but after that the end!
i remember the first time i aw AOF2 , my eyes almost melted, the desperation moves, the larger than life sprites, AOF was evrything that SF was not.....SPECTACULAR, and fight me, RYO is such a cool character and only 1uped by KYO when KOF was a thing.
Indeed
Once i got hooked into SNK games i couldn't play SF again.
AOF with it's large sprites were the entrance for me.
Such an iconic game ☁
I used to LOVE this game
Aof they did three games took all the best characters and put them in the kof series play did the same thing with fatal fury I'm glad both of these games are getting new releases later on this year and I'm here for it
The gameplay was pretty good. Not as good as sf2 but good enough to enjoy. It was closer to SF1 in game mechanics and gameplay.
King was based on sue shiomi from the street fighter film series starring sonny chiba
That's incorrect. She is based off of a real muy thai fighter Saskia who played a henchwoman in the movie China White. Also based on grace jones body.
I love Snes Mr.Big theme
I've always wondered about Mr. Karate with the AWESOME Tengu mask. Does that mask have like special powers, coz in SNK vs Capcom he was a bitch to fight and his aura+sprite was different colours? Please explain if you can Sebastian? 🙏🏻
Art of Fighting (1992)
AOF 2 (1994)
AOF 3 (1996)
AOF Anthology (Playstation 2, Playstation 4)
Jack was clearly designed after big John stud
fighting Mr. Big looks a lot like someone getting there ass kicked by Tony Levin and his finger-sticks
Art of fighting and Last blade were classics of the genre - Just not as pale table for the USA like SF.
World Heroes next please?
I wana see a full fight between Mr karate and akuma
Wang Koh-San was only 24 in AOF 3...
Subbed
First game with a special meter
Haoh Shou Koh Ken!
In my opinion Art of fighting died by the sequel. No storymode was the nail in the coffin
“TAHH-DO!”
street fighter 1 was released in the late 80s not in 97. Unless I missed heard you.
Did I hear him say 1978 is when Street Fighter came out? Isn't it 87?
I never heard of that game until I watched a crappy anime OVA based on it. 🤣
I wish the games cpu weren't that damn cheap and hard.
Fuck 90s SNK fighting game bosses
Snk boss syndrome
The animations in 3 were SOOOOO good looking... shame it didn't catch on. Still, actually creating a such a cohesive story/universe is hard to deny. SNK definitely knew how to tell a story.
I mean your right but dear God did Aof3 fall of hard.
Art of Fighting 3 is the closest we ever got to a Tekken style 2D fighter. And it’s brilliant it flows so well, arguably the most underrated 2D fighter ever.
Had the best graphics of three, but by far the worst gameplay. And the most unappealing roster.
@@Ticr00
AOF2 had the worst gameplay to me.
But AOF3 did have an unappealing roster, the threequel's final bosses should've been Krauser at age 26, and Rugal at age 34.
