    Your comments are spot on - another insightful post from you! One small suggestion: please use more "typical" home examples. The spaces you've worked on are incredible but very out of touch with the average viewer. It would be much more helpful to see a high-end example and another more simple based on what the average home looks like.

      I was going to suggest the exact same thing. Those homes are GORGEOUS,, but most of us viewers don't have that grand of a home, so an upgrade on a "normal"..(I hope I'm using the right word) or like she said the "typical" home would be wonderful.

      I thought the same. I feel like the real struggle is to use some of thous advises, like grouping sitting areas, when u have a rather small space.

      Rajna Kecojevic you’re right...most of us don’t live in huge spaces. 8’ ceilings, 1500-2000 square foot homes are more realistic.

      I respectfully disagree because youtube is already chock-full of cheap DIYs. I actually hate when people cheaper the lesson. Truly lux homes take money or REALLY good scavenging/fakes (aka DIYs). I would personally unsub.

      I love wood floors! Can I offer a suggestion? I moved into a house with blondish wood, and the former owner also put a dark wood in other rooms. The dark wood shows EVERY speck! Just be careful! 🌻

    • @CJsellsSoCal
      @CJsellsSoCal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kathryn oh I know I’m for sure going light. I have dark on a rental we installed while we were living there and I swore I’d never do it again for that very reason. Shows it all!

    • @marinarugg10960
      @marinarugg10960 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tinyteacher1111 You are so correct!! I love the look of the dark floors I had installed BUT I am a slave to them. Every piece of lint or dust looks so obvious. I need to dust mop them daily and wash them every few days. I never had this problem with the light oak original hardwood flooring in the older part of the house. So much for trying to update to a more contemporary look. Never again! I actually regret doing it now and it wasn't cheap! I live in a busy neighborhood in a big city so it's hard to keep the dust and dirt out-even from just cars going by, I feel they stir up dirt too and it gets inside.

    Thank for your good advice. Live houseplants do wonders for my home. When I remove them for special fertilizing or watering, the room looks oddly bare. I especially like big plants or a display of several small plants and textures featured on a tray. Also, live plants help to clean the interior air. The only problem is that many plants need to be by a window, and they reject where I want to place them because of lack of light. So, I figure them out. Nothing looks prettier than a beautiful, live plant.

    • @JulieKhuu

      I know this is an old post, but my suggestion is to use single 'grow' bulbs - helps the plant and highlights it at the same time. I put them in those hinged lamps so I can move it closer or further way from the plant.

    I just got my blanket layer for my bed at the sales, it's beautiful, white and has a textured finish. It's been 29 years of marriage (this week) and the cost of something so beautiful was not a priority until now - a lock down, supporting local business at the shopfront, and Covid19 will not get me down. Next I am remaking my living room for a grand finish for Christmas, and a quiet time at home.

    Easiest things I could do to upgrade my space right now... 1. upgrade the window coverings in my dining nook. I want to do this before winter so I can warm it up by closing the curtains too. I need to figure out how to do corner curtain rods as I want it to look custom to the space. 2. Update my fireplace mantel. Ok, the whole fireplace needs an update, but the mantel will be the least expensive start. 3. Upgrade the seating. Since moving in a year ago, we haven't really figured out how to style the new space. Our furniture was bought to fit our old house, and, while I love our couch, I now wish it was a lighter colour. The best way I can figure out to layout the room will need some smaller chairs opposite the couch and I'm worried I'll have a hard time getting the visual weight of the space to balance out. Our living room is much more awkward than I realized when we bought, and my husband and all our friends are saying a sectional will break-up the space too much.
    I would love to see a video talking about how to make awkward layouts work (though I just discovered your channel, so maybe I need to do some digging!)

    Literally everything needs upgrading.
    1) Window treatments in bedrooms; remove building standard blind with plastic rope, open plan living room; remove curtain rods and get celing runners, i want to add celing to floor curtains.
    2) Reupholstere my current couch with velvet/ seude emerald green fabric. add metal tone pillows.
    3) spray paint kitchen hard ware matt black and gold.
    4) spray paint kitchen fossette gold and sink matt black.
    5) add sconces and pendants to divide the open plan kichen living room dinning area, add gold sconce in the kitchen above the sink.
    6) level up ceramic back splash tilings in the kitchen by adding gold grouting. paint kitchen wall light pebble grey.

      Thank you for watching! I have never seen a faucet and sink spray painted successfully. You would have to use epoxy for a porcelain sink and the finish would scratch off from the faucet, even with multiple top coats. Just do a bit more research before you commit!

Would you still advise in painting them something besides white? Roughly 8' high. Also, we live in the south and ceiling fans are a must!! Going for a 70s, boho, eclectic feel. Since we don’t rent out to vacationers, I have no desire for the Lodge look. I have cream leather furniture to brighten up the living room, but that is where my creativity stops. Hello! I just watched this video and quarantine, frustration, so many options aside I'm inspired to continue creating my bedroom nest.
    One question. Since I'm dealing with a small bedroom space is at a premium.
    I have a vintage desk that I've turned into a vanity (painted a simple ivory with) with a tall tri-fold mirror on the right side and on the left a modern mid-century vibe glass night table on the left.
    Conventional wisdom is matching nightstands so I'm not sure if this combo is ok.
    Thoughts?

    @JuklieKhuu,
    You are fantastic! Thank You so much for the detailed ways you explain things...I love it when you give us a list of rules or do's and don'ts. SOOOO Helpful!! I grew up with a dad who was an incredible Ornamental Plasterer from Italy, A real construction family so I feel very comfortable helping others with their homes and they always love what I do...But My House..Another story.
    I need so much help with my Kitchen. The other rooms( not too horrible)LOL-- But that kitchen was remodeled 13 years ago with expensive, solid, high-end wood cabinets - but I do a ton of cooking and all of the holidays here for all of our big family so it already looks so tired. Dull Granite, paint has worn off of every cabinet especially around the hardware, so many scratches and dents in the wood, and very inefficient use of the storage. It's pretty small too but I can't change that. The worst is that I need a big refrigerator, but Hate that it sticks so far out past the cabinets. It makes the room look even smaller. I'm hoping to use some of your ideas to give this very important space an inexpensive facelift. The cabinets are now a Tuscany looking soft buttery-linen color with a hint of light yellow in the Glaze. There's a bit of brown in the grooves of the raised panels. So much has worn off from wear and cleaning them all the time. Do I have to keep cabinets a light color or white when the space is tight? I wanted to paint them darker on the bottom and lighter on top ..( pulling 2 colors out of the Granite. .No one seems to like that idea here saying it will make the room seem even smaller and more narrow. My second big issue is the horrible backsplash. But the granite is very busy looking with warm golds, various greys, spots of Black and cranberry, and hints of light Ivory throughout. I have no idea what to do to freshen the backsplash without it looking too busy. The cabinets have wide crown moldings on top - but there is still wall above that what color paint?? What do you think? Help !! Going crazy in Boston....

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what you’re describing, it’s too much look for a small space. If the granite is already busy, breaking up the cabinets into two separate colors will divide the room, making it look even busier and smaller. So I agree with the masses on this one. Your best bet is to keep the cabinets one light shade and replace the countertops. It’s a small investment, but will make all the difference in the world. Go for a color that is similar to the cabinets and watch the entire space open up right before your eyes! 😍

    Thank you we followed your ideas. We added modern art in most rooms, upgraded all lighting fixtures and hardware. We are currently adding wainscoting and crown molding throughout the house. We already own a luxury house and now it looks as though it’s a million dollar house!! We received so many compliments from the people it matters such as the plumbers, landscapers and even the pizza guy.

    Uhm pretty sure if I can afford a POWDER ROOM I can afford wallpaper?!

      Couple gallons of paint = less than $100 even for Benjamin Moore, paint your bedroom in an afternoon. Done. If your tastes change, repaint. It's 100x easier and cheaper than replacing wallpaper. Just saying.

    My biggest problem is I do not have a decorator's eye. It is overwhelming, and then frustrating trying to have things look really nice when I don't know how. Now, I just now I have to make myself happy in the space I have with what I have to work with. It will never look like what you do. I wish I could just hire you and give you a great budget to work with, you really are so talented.

    Hi Julie, 3 things i can do to upgrade my home :
    - more artwork (i love odd pieces, but my wife is simple/classic)
    - create a bar area for all of our entertaining
    - upgrade my kitchen (new floors, back splash, paint, and cabinets. throw the whole kitchen away lol)

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Start with the kitchen first! It will have the most major impact and you can start enjoying it now Britt!

    Five stars Julie! So 90% of what you spoke about I've already done in my home out of my own intuition. Then near the end you said get rid of the vinyl blinds. I keep them because I'm concerned about the sun fading my artwork, furniture and rugs. But I recently had my windows replaced with glass that seems to have UV protection. So I pulled the blinds up, pulled the shears and Wallah, it looks great! What I really liked about your video is that you don't waste my time with fluff, you get to the points and give great information. I'm definitely a subscriber now, thanks so much!

      Thank you so much for the thoughtful feedback Chris! Yes, windows nowadays come glazed with UVA/UVB filters, but you can also get it tinted right on. Then your last source of defense can come from a solar shade 🙌🏻

    Just found your channel and I'm so glad I did! ☺️ I love how you've formatted the videos in digestible chunks. We just finished sheetrocking our living room and we are ready to put primer on the walls. I've been wanting to do something on the ceiling, like bamboo wood, but I thought it might be too much because we have regular 8' ceilings, and on top of that, I love herringbone patterns! 😍 I'm not sure if it'll be too busy, but I love seamless solid floors with no grout or grooves for easy cleaning, so maybe that would offset the busy ceiling? 🤷🏽‍♀️ Or, maybe I can reverse it, and put a wood ceiling with no pattern, but the have a herringbone pattern on the floor? I'm having a bit of a challenge making everything cohesive, but after watching your video, I'm sure I want to dress up our ceiling now, since it creates a sense of luxury! So, my three things are ceiling, something on the walls, and definitely getting rid of all plastic on my windows. 😅 Thank you so very much for the advice!💜

      Ceilings are the fifth wall so treat it with care and attention Sandra. I love the idea of wood paneled herringbone- but your instincts are correct. The more of a statement you make up top, the more simplified the rest of the space should be to really let the ceiling shine. You got this 🙌🏻
