+Texan in Tokyo I just found you guys through Rachel and Jun. Also found Sharla from Rachel, Einshine from Sharla, TheAnimeMan from Einshine and then I found Rcahel and Jun from Simon and Martina!! Ahh, I love all you guys, TH-camrs are so friendly and supportive of each other! :D

Really great, informative video. Thank you very much! Also you two continue to be just the most adorable people ever. I love watching your never-ending cuteness.
I love sitting seiza! In zen they also call in nihonza, and while it can be uncomfortable at first, it becomes easier with time. Especially after a few months. It's much better for people who have back problems - as it allows one to sit folding periods of time :) a cushion helps too
Going over some videos I have missed over the past while, and once again I am filled with joy how happy you two seem ^^ It also further inspires to continue with goals and maintain the necessary sacrifices for relocating out of the CONUS (especially now... yeesh...) Keep on keeping on :D
Thank you for this, it has been really informative! I'll be in Japan for about half a year in Wakayama on student exchange which is apparently a rather country area. Always loved the countryside in Japan.
These videos are so much fun to watch! There's no pretentiousness and it just feels really down to earth and fun. Thank you, and I hope you're recovering well!
Hey, just discovered this TH-cam channel. Congrats to the young couple! I am originally from Oklahoma (Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner...) and have lived in Japan for almost 13 years. I live in a small city in Hokkaido, and I have discovered no matter how much money we have, my Japanese wife can spend it! Do you two also follow the Japanese custom of the wife being in control of the family finances? It really stinks. I always wanted to live in the "inaka" but my wife insists she is a city girl. A neighbor gave me her garden where I can live out my fantasy of living in the countryside. I grow lots of vegetables but my wife gives them away as fast as I can grow them, something to do with the Japanese gift giving culture. Oh well, I'll have to watch all your videos now. Tootles (yes, I have had a glass of wine).
Zee Utuber Esashi, Hokkaido? There are many sleepy seaside towns on the west coast. Why do you want to move to Esashi? I think I once drove through there. I'm sure it was a pleasant enough town.
man, you guys are an adorable couple, and your videos are really good, fair opinions, no silly drama with other expats, not making videos while driving. thank you for that. have you guys considered doing some vegetable gardening while living in this rural area or are you traveling between here and Tokyo too much for that to work? it'll definitely save you a lot of money on expensive supermarket produce. roots like ginger or the cut off base of veges like spring onions and chingensai can grow back easily if you throw it into a pot or mason jar and left on a sunny window sill.
I should also mention the current state of the housing market in the UK is... want to move out and live on your own? the government says go fuck yourself...
+Texan in Tokyo The UK housing market is a joke, watching your videos of the countryside is well as Rachel and Jun...Aboard in Japan, should also mention BusanKevin and Sharla =) makes me want to move, but it seems unless i teach English (which i don't have a qualification for) it would be hard for me to make the move. Plus my Japanese is not so great :D
I am little surprised at how affordable that is. I can't imagine spending that little even if we didn't have kids. Living on the far rural areas of Seattle means we pay 210,000¥/m instead of 320,000¥ and parking just for work costs me 30,500¥.
Long time follower, first time commenter! I love you two; great chemistry and goofy lol. my wife and I just moved to the country in Western New York from New York City and expenses are way down, but now we need two cars. I have a romantic notion of the Japanese countryside; one day I will spend a month to a year there (if I'm so lucky). Thanks as always!
I live in the countryside in Nagano-ken and my expenses are close to yours though my food cost is lower. I spend at least 30,000 yen a month and that is only cooking meals. One thing I love about my area is that there is a lot of farmers market, since I live in a farming town, so that helps with the food costs. I rarely go fast food or go out to restaurants. My rent is the same as yours, my utilities are bundled together so I pay 8,000 to 9,500 yen. Transportation, I have a rental car from the company I work for so they take care of shaken for me and I only pay rent which is 19,500 a month.
You always talk about the expensive fruit, have you ever tried growing some yourself? If i recall, you have a small backyard and there are also things to grow inside :)
+Andrew Walsh not really but i always liked the thought of having your own plants. even though just as a bonus. i made my parents get a few fruit trees, raspberry plants and herbs and i tried cucumbers tomatoes peppers and carrots. i think most of those need a few years to give plenty and im still looking for the secret of great carrots :)
I didn't watch the video because I'm considering moving to japan because we are not we wouldn't want to leave our family's but I do watch them just to see you both your both infectiously adorable and make me smile for the few minutes your on screen so thankyou both for your videos , also it would be so nice if you could do a video introducing Japanese mom an dad an family if they are ok with that you talk about them often and paint them as lovely so obviously we all want to see an meet them 😊 (sorry if that sounded creepy it wasn't intended that way lol) hope your home now grace and recovering well xx
This is really helpful for people like me who's going to study in Japan. I'll be going alone so i think that my living expenses would be a lot cheaper, and i can kind of be a lot frugal if i need to survive. Thanks for making this video, really gives me bit of an insight about how much it would cost for me to live in Japan.
Internet sounds reasonable honestly. I live in east tennessee and Comcast costs 100+ for the best package (15-20 MB/s) and still comes with a 300GB download cap.
Question Grace and Ryosuke how do we find a place like yours out in the countryside? Was wondering cause guess what I will be moving there next year! YAY. I guess you might be home from the hospital now, I know you have to be happy. We all know Ryosuke is very happy to have his Gracie back at home. We love you both hope this year goes even better for you!
+Tania LoNero Hi Tania! It depends. We always go to a housing agency because that's the easiest way to find something that matches our criteria - in return they charge 1 months rent as a fee. I'd recommend using any of the official housing agencies because they can specifically look for places that will rent to foreigners.
Arigato Gozaimasu! I was wondering. So, I guess I will have to see about finding one when we come to visit Japan this year. Probably this summer. Again thank you. Texan in Tokyo
I love watching you guys so much especially when either I need answers about Japan and you guys always answer them, or I'm just watching to see so many beautiful & fun things in Japan. Thank you Grace & Ryosuke for all these great videos!! P.s Grace hope you are feeling better after Surgery Xx!
here in Iceland we spend around 80.000 yen on rent, insurance is around 5000 yen (for me), and the internet is around 8000 yen and we spend around 90.000-100.000 yen on food every month (I live with my fiancé).. and yes we live on the country side, the vegetables and fruits here are ridiculously expensive and low quality..
I love these videos. I grew up in Kyoto with a foster family that was a business associate of my grandfather. I moved back to the States after I finished my degree at Toudai. I've been showing my wife these videos hoeping I can convince her to move back to Japan with me one day.
I'm not moving to Japan but I really enjoy your videos because I am curious person and am genuinely interested in other places especially Japan and China. Thank you for sharing I like you being my eyes and ears in a far away place. I also love to see food and cooking shows I'm eating more Japanese food and wish I could enjoy the real thing someday. Thank you.
In the end you guys save in the rent but end up spending more in others, if you calculate your comunite time as a working hour you're may be losing, if there is a AEON, APITA or other in your region you can do all the groceries shop via internet delivered at your door, you save a lot once you will not end up buying unucessary things, been using it for the past 7 years once a week and never had any problem with it. Paying all your bills with credit card, and others with electronic money purshased with your credit card (double points) give you a lot back, for example calculating in your month expenses could be enought to rent a car 4 times for free at your car rental mentioned price.
You've got it so well in Japan pricing wise compared to us in Australia. In my experience here; Rent $1900 P/M Electricity $700 P/M Internet $80 P/M Phone $60 P/M Food $2000+ P/M (All eating out) Car is only $800 a year.
Thanks for the information, my girlfriend and I are due to move out to Japan in a few months and this information kinda matches up with what we've seen in our research. I was wondering though if you could provide some introductory information into the taxing system in Japan. Have a great day and thanks for the videos. Hope you are all doing well.
Hi guys! I think this video might be a bit misleading. The countryside of Japan that is near to Tokyo (or at least only a 900 yen ride from Tokyo) has far different costs associated with it than the countryside of Japan that is farther from major cities, especially Tokyo. Rent in particular will be completely different.
Ahhh the things you find on TH-cam at three in the morning. You two were so damn cute. Please if you get a chance convert your monthly expenses into a dollar amount. Just for laughs as I will never get the chance to live in Japan but were I too it would be in the country.
Forrrr living in Australia, we spend about $3000 AUD so about the same except most of it is rent D: rent is 105000 a month :/ food we spend $400 aud or 32000 yen. It doesn't cost more to have pets here but at least 90% of rental places here will not allow you to have pets at all. In the country its more common for pets to be allowed but in the city its like no chance unless the house is SUPER old.
I've heard of the rent to salary rule as well but out here where I live............yeah, I'd be living in someone's garage or the back shed. I have one of the more affordable places I'd say that I know about and it's still over 50% of my income. 20-30% is if your rich, live in a place with low rents or are lucky enough to live somewhere where it's cheaper to own than rent.
I live Finland and city name is Oulu, aparment where is one bedroom livingroom and kitchen and rent is 530€ one month include water and heat, internet cost one month like 20€
I can't believe I only found this channel just as you guys are leaving it! 😭😭😭 I need a poop hat and I love Grace and Ryo-Chan! 😍 I hope you guys continue to make videos even after you have children. Becoming a mother was the greatest experience in my life so GOOD LUCK. ❤
Great video! I live in Tokyo and it's definitely more pricey.. But I'm so glad Japan is making SIM cards more available ! Before phone bills use to be crazy like 7000yen/month etc but now it's much cheaper with unlocked phones yay!
Hey guys, really dig the channel! I just moved to Aomori prefecture and would like to suggest a "How to pay utility bills at Lawson's or FamilyMart" video. Awesome content, keep it up!
That really sucks having to pay all that extra for pets. In Australia, you don't have to pay for pets. When going for a place, the ad will say if pets are allowed or not and if they are, you usually have to agree to get the carpets treated for fleas if/when you move out.
My Nan moved from London to Norfolk, which is where a lot of veg is grow here in England and she was amazed at how much cheaper veg was in London to here so maybe that not just a JApanese thing
In Porto, Portugal 600 euros ~77000yen for a one-bedroom apartment , well located, well furnished and quite roomy and sunny + bills + gym + pets + diesel But most people here earn 500-900, so it becomes expensive!
Thats really nice. In my family too, my parents put importance on good food since we eat at home most of the time. So a large portion of the paycheck goes for just food
The JET programme is a very good way to save money. You get paid about 275,000¥/month and you can save about half of that each month if you get put in the inaka and have the BOE subsidize part of ur rent.
I wonder, what speed is the internet that costs 5500 yen? In Norway you pay about 6300 yen for 40/40, which is the lowest speed you can get with the most popular internet provider (they're also famous for being problem-free, consistent, and reliable). You can get slower internet and pay way less, but the download speeds for those are usually abysmal.
We have a standard house in suburbia (20 mins away from Canberra city Australia) and it's about 136000 a month in rent and it's not that much cheaper in the country since Canberra is half city half country. Australia is very expensive. In Sydney it's at least 240000 which would be for a small apartment. Wish I was in Japan. Countryside rather than city but either will do.
Very helpful video for my fiancé's and my (hypothetical) future plans. We are currently working hard to get from "hypothetical" to "definite" (language, work qualifications, budget etc.), so who knows, fingers crossed! :D Thanks so much!! P.S.: Grace, your skirt is really cute, it suits you so well! So pretty.
What's the difference between buying and renting in the countryside? My dream is to buy and renovate an old Japanese farm house. My reality is maintaining an old house in a (once) small Texas town. Not a bad life at all but I miss being in a small town.
Also rent is pretty bad in NZ too, hubby and I got VERY lucky to find a 3brm house in Auckland for $445 a week...Auckland is horrible. We are hoping to move back to our hometown and buy a house! (If the bank lets us, hehe)
Good information. As far as various taxes, pension, and health insurance any estimate on their cost. Those can add up... I spent a few months in countryside where wife is from with the intent to relocate but ultimately expenses seemed to prove higher than expected. Not unreasonable but unexpected
my bestfriend and i plans to live in japan next year (not permanent) as that is what we dreamed of since we're in highschool. Seeing the expenses, it has a huge difference compared here in my country. Here, you can get a place for about 7000 yen for a single person to 23000 yen(decent house, can accomodate a family already). yes, what I want to say is we need to adjust to a higher cost of living than what we're used to. huhu im crying
The coats of any product is higher in smaller towns then it is in a city. This is because there is less to nun competition in a smaller town then there is in a bigger one. So the prices go up in a smaller town or place that has one or two stores and in a bigger town the prices go down. This is because of supply and demand. Sorry, but a lot of business edict is universal.
I'm having a hard time finding prices in Japan that are competitive to what living expenses I pay now, unfortunately. In the US, there's a lot of expensive regions to live in, but also a lot of inexpensive regions. I happen to live in the latter, and the total living cost they mentioned is a good $400 more per month than I currently pay =/ not that I'm unhappy with my current living situation haha, but I'd like to live in Japan someday
I live in Hawaii rent $2100 Internet $60 cell phone $150-2 people Food per month- $800 w/o eating out and being on a budget. but we usually spend about $1200 uuuugggghhh
ooh your dad is so right about rent. but in Australia... we got no choice. I've been looking for somewhere to live (with my dog) around Melbourne while I'm at uni and it could cost 500 a fortnight... i only get 580 a fortnight. Groan. :(
Hello. So... this is the 3th video i watch from you guys, and it is the first look at your husband, but oh-boy he is cool :) just really wanted to say that :) ..... "chef" hahaha
That's a lot.. 170,000yen a month in Countryside. I spend roughly around 70,000yen-115,000yen a month in Tokyo. Include Apartment Rental, Transportation, Internet, Phone, Water, Gas, Electric and Entertainment.
Ahhhh I just sent someone to your channel last week for your old cost of living vid. :D Great timing!
+Rachel & Jun :D
+Texan in Tokyo I just found you guys through Rachel and Jun. Also found Sharla from Rachel, Einshine from Sharla, TheAnimeMan from Einshine and then I found Rcahel and Jun from Simon and Martina!! Ahh, I love all you guys, TH-camrs are so friendly and supportive of each other! :D
@@TexaninTokyo Hi GUYS.
I just found out that one yen is about the same as one penny in the US. So I just move the decimal left two spaces to convert to dollars. Makes it easy to approximate.
The cost would be around 1,019 in British Pounds and 1,453 in US Dollars. (For those interested in knowing) Edit: This is for the SINGLE person's expense. 170,000 yen conversion only. Thanks @Tudor Sike
Thanks
its so depressing that I could afford that but cant afford to live here in the uk. :(
Should mention that it's the ¥170 000 per single person that you converted there.
+Tudor Sike Thank you forgot to mention ^_^
+Neo Getz I feel the same way! That's so cheap! But I guess they are out in the middle of no where. I'm in a large Canadian city living downtown :S
Really great, informative video. Thank you very much! Also you two continue to be just the most adorable people ever. I love watching your never-ending cuteness.
Informative video. Also, I hope Grace is recovering well from her surgery! 🍊💐📖
Grace, I'm hoping that you're feeling well and that everything went smoothly with your surgery. Always great to see your videos here!
I love sitting seiza!
In zen they also call in nihonza, and while it can be uncomfortable at first, it becomes easier with time. Especially after a few months. It's much better for people who have back problems - as it allows one to sit folding periods of time :)
a cushion helps too
Going over some videos I have missed over the past while, and once again I am filled with joy how happy you two seem ^^ It also further inspires to continue with goals and maintain the necessary sacrifices for relocating out of the CONUS (especially now... yeesh...)

Thank you for this, it has been really informative! I'll be in Japan for about half a year in Wakayama on student exchange which is apparently a rather country area. Always loved the countryside in Japan.
Hope you are feeling better after surgery ! Your videos make my day!!!!!
+Jake Jacob why she taking surgery what happened to her? i forgot
+Pandy chin To be honest I'm not sure , I just know that she recently had surgery
+Jake Jacob Yes! I still can't talk really, but I'm feeling MUCH better
These videos are so much fun to watch! There's no pretentiousness and it just feels really down to earth and fun. Thank you, and I hope you're recovering well!

Ayo it’s been 4 years, how is it?
He's so cute when he says "I'm married". 😬
i like your videos! its kinda nice to see and hear japanese , english both communicating without any miscommunication.
Compared to what we were paying in NYC....I could find rent in my sofa cushion.LOL Thanks for the video!
holy balls I'm moving to the county side in Japan, average rent around here for a two bedroom is £700 which is something like 125000yen.
I should also mention the current state of the housing market in the UK is... want to move out and live on your own? the government says go fuck yourself...
+Michael Grant I've given up on the UK housing market... As soon as I'm done with uni it's off to Japan

is Grace home from the hospital yet? I hope she is recovering well.
Love when you two have same personalities in the videos, more inviting and funny for me to watch. Grace and Ryo-, Happy New Year!
It would be great if y'all could show us more of the countryside.

DANG! I need to move to the countryside...lol. That is so much cheaper than what I have to pay each month unfortunately...
Hey Ryosuke and Grace! Love all your videos and hope you guys make one on the topic of Religions, beliefs and superstitions in Japan!

Mark Gibbons Electricity 700$ per MONTH?! I think I could pay half a years worth of electricity with that in Finland. Jfc o.o
Wow I thought my almost $300 electric bill was bad. Are your expenses you are posting in usd or aud?
Mark Gibbons
sometimes I have heating bills that are €2000 P/M
ATHRENTHE2ND hmm.....im gonna guess aud... you know because they live in Australia
+Jacobo Blanco Taxes. Uggggghhhh. It really depends on your situation/where you work/where you live.
Texan in Tokyo I figured it would be very complicated. Thanks anyways :-)
This video make me appreciate how much things in our country cost :)) thanks for sharingggg
Yeah an introductory video about the taxing system in Japan would be super helpful. Jacobo Blanco also suggested this in the comments.
Hi guys! I think this video might be a bit misleading. The countryside of Japan that is near to Tokyo (or at least only a 900 yen ride from Tokyo) has far different costs associated with it than the countryside of Japan that is farther from major cities, especially Tokyo. Rent in particular will be completely different.
i pay way more in canada for my rent and things. my rent alone is 1200 canadian. internet is 110 canadian.
Is it possible for you to share the app that you use to track expenditures?:) also WHY IS PASTA SO EXPENSIVE?!
+VeryLastAirbender Gotto concur having this app would be great
+VeryLastAirbender Wally is pretty good!
+VeryLastAirbender probably mint
+VeryLastAirbender
"Mint" is an excellent app for this.
I'm just guessing but maybe because wheat is imported, and not grown very much in japan.
Another great, informative video.
And yay to the poop hat!!!! :D
I welcome the recent trend that Grace also adds comedy touches to the videos. "I can't feel my feet. I can't feel my feet!" 😄
+Yoshi I know, right? Grace is awesome! and She is my wife haha I am lucky :) (Ryosuke)
+Texan in Tokyo YES, YOU ARE 😄
Ahhh the things you find on TH-cam at three in the morning. You two were so damn cute. Please if you get a chance convert your monthly expenses into a dollar amount. Just for laughs as I will never get the chance to live in Japan but were I too it would be in the country.
These videos are awesome and I love watching them. :)
Great video, would've enjoyed a conversion to $ or £ in the subtitles, but still a good informing video thanks!
I live Finland and city name is Oulu, aparment where is one bedroom livingroom and kitchen and rent is 530€ one month include water and heat, internet cost one month like 20€
+Texan in Tokyo what about setting up a small garden for vegetables & fruits, like; tomatoes, carrots, onions, cucumbers, strawberries, etc?
Love you both, hope you heal up well Grace!!
It sounds reasonable for a married couple, I have around half the cost of living by my own with pets, so it's really not that different.
I can't believe I only found this channel just as you guys are leaving it! 😭😭😭
I need a poop hat and I love Grace and Ryo-Chan!
In Porto, Portugal 600 euros ~77000yen for a one-bedroom apartment , well located, well furnished and quite roomy and sunny + bills + gym + pets + diesel
But most people here earn 500-900, so it becomes expensive!
Ryosuke should write a book about how my american wife think i'm crazy.
Thats really nice. In my family too, my parents put importance on good food since we eat at home most of the time. So a large portion of the paycheck goes for just food
Hope you are doing ok and healing well. Love from Florida
The JET programme is a very good way to save money. You get paid about 275,000¥/month and you can save about half of that each month if you get put in the inaka and have the BOE subsidize part of ur rent.
Great facts for many viewers - thank you 💟!
For a high school student (almost college student) with no job, 250,000 yen seems daunting.
Thats around 3000 usd though...
+Hanami Dango As a college student I can survive on 120,000 Yen including day trips but excluding actual travel. It's doable! :)
That's a relief. Seeing how I want to go to Japan for college.
Hanami Dango You can always apply for scholarships! :) There are a lot for short-term international students
Yeah. But I want to go there for 4 years. Not a study abroad experience.
What is the app do you use to calculate your spending?
+Dawn K It's called Zaim - a friend recommended it. We might switch to a paid one soon, though, with more options.
I'M WEARING THE EXACT SAME NAIL POLISH!! Sorry I just got too excited haha. Love your videos
Also rent is pretty bad in NZ too, hubby and I got VERY lucky to find a 3brm house in Auckland for $445 a week...Auckland is horrible. We are hoping to move back to our hometown and buy a house! (If the bank lets us, hehe)
Hope your feeling well Grace! I know Ryosuke is taking great care of you.
CocoLumbee sad life, you can't even find a room for rent in California for 65,000 yen avg is 86,000 yen or $750 USD for just 1 room 😭
I miss you guys so much, you were my favorite j loggers 💜💙
Idk if u have space but you should have a big garden there to cut costs on groceries!
The coats of any product is higher in smaller towns then it is in a city. This is because there is less to nun competition in a smaller town then there is in a bigger one. So the prices go up in a smaller town or place that has one or two stores and in a bigger town the prices go down. This is because of supply and demand. Sorry, but a lot of business edict is universal.
hope you feel better Grace! i lOVE your Videos!❤
I'm having a hard time finding prices in Japan that are competitive to what living expenses I pay now, unfortunately. In the US, there's a lot of expensive regions to live in, but also a lot of inexpensive regions. I happen to live in the latter, and the total living cost they mentioned is a good $400 more per month than I currently pay =/ not that I'm unhappy with my current living situation haha, but I'd like to live in Japan someday
poop hat count.... I guess 7 ???
+KemushiChan ロレッタ Thanks for counting! I appreciate it :)
I live in Hawaii
rent $2100
Internet $60
cell phone $150-2 people
Food per month- $800 w/o eating out and being on a budget. but we usually spend about $1200
uuuugggghhh
live***
Wow.. didn't know food was THAT expensive in Hawaii.
+Asim Ali yeah it's really expensive. Especially eating out. You can expect to pay $70 for a dinner for 2.
Everything's expensive in Hawaii because they have to import it all.
Thank, I like cooking too. life is short, enjoy yourself.
ooh your dad is so right about rent. but in Australia... we got no choice. I've been looking for somewhere to live (with my dog) around Melbourne while I'm at uni and it could cost 500 a fortnight... i only get 580 a fortnight.
Groan. :(
You guys are the best TH-camrs
Hello. So... this is the 3th video i watch from you guys, and it is the first look at your husband, but oh-boy he is cool :) just really wanted to say that :) .....
