    A lot of youtubers don't like The Ordinarys' retinol serums because they "don't" sink in. But for me with dryer skin I enjoy them.

    There’s an interesting study with granactive retinoids that they bind the same receptors as retinoic acid (the endpoint retinoid and usually prescription only) which is pretty neat. Probably needs more studies for real efficacy but a good start

    I am so happy I found your channel. You’re so straightforward and you’re the only one who didn’t confuse me tbh! But please help! Ive never used any retinoids or retinol, and i want to start using it for the first time ever! What’s the difference between retinoids and retinols? Which one should i use for a very first time? The retinol 0.2% in squalane or granactive retinoid 2% ? Isn’t 2% too much for a first time? Please help!!!♥️♥️♥️

    • @Septembre1
      @Septembre1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And one more thing I forgot to mention :) whats the difference between Granactive retinoid emulsion and squalane?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Retinoids are the "family", and they include retinyl esters, Retinol, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, and oral isotretinoin and some others.
      The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid is one of the newest forms in this family; it may show similar results as adapalene/tretinoin. But there aren't many studies that I could find about this. It's also known under the name HPR. (In case you want to look deeper into it) Also 2% HPR (Granactive Retinoid) is not the same as 0,2% off Retinol since it works differently. Therefore you can go much higher in strength.
      What we know is that it is less irritating and therefore it's recommended. Retinol has more conversion stages before it gets into the skin and may lead to more irritation. When using Retinol, it's always best to use a good moisturizer to reduce it.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is not much of a difference they have the same strength just the emulsion absorbs better and has a different feeling.

    Gonna start this regimen with retinol 0.2 in squalane and mandelic acid as AHA on alternate nights. I've heard it's good to use AHA on alternate nights after retinol to shed off the dead skin layer that retinol PRODUCED, so I opted for mandelic acid since it stands to be the most skin friendly out of the AHAs. THANK YOU SO MUCH! ❤️❤️❤️

    Hello Melissa,
    Love your videos🥰 And I can’t stop watching all your video regarding The ordinary series.
    Just a question: I was given this night regime by DECIEM TEAM.
    PM
    1. Squalane Cleanser (using my own inissfree cleanser)
    2. Retinol 0.2% (2x3 times a week) ALTERNATE with Lactic Acid 10% + HA (1x2 times a week)
    3. Hylaronic Acid
    4. Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA and/or Rose Hip Seed Oil
    My question is how do I use Retinol 0.2% (2x3 times a week) ALTERNATE with Lactic Acid 10% + HA (1x2 times a week) I mean I watched your videos and my confusion lies if I use them for the same week (1 week) or alternate them every week? ( 1st week Retinol 0.2%. 2nd week Lactic Acid 10% + HA).
    Sorry if I keep asking, its my first time going to use The Ordinary products.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey again! :)
      First of all, I recommend doing it in this order:
      - Cleanser
      - Lactic Acid (alternate with Retinol)
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Retinol (alternate with Lactic Acid)
      - Oil
      - Moisturizer
      ....or mix 2-3 drops of your oil with a pea-size amount of your moisturizer.)
      However, I recommend watching this video here:
      I focused on Glycolic Acid and Retinol in general, but this won't change how you can use your Lactic Acid and Retinol! :)

      You can find this information @ (04:07)
      Your Serums =
      Niacinamide (Water-Based)
      Retinol (Anhydrous Solution)
      The order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
      I may do antoher video about this, since this was just one that shows how you can include it to avoid irritation since many people want to include acids, and tons of other serums right away so they will end up with lots of irritation.😞

      Yes, the main concern is BHA. It can work with AHA (Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid); however, most include high strength, and therefore it may lead to irritation. So I recommend being cautious when doing this. Maybe try it first every other day and see how you go. And do not forget to moisturize well during the day if you need it.

      Hey!
      You can use Retinol all year around in your evening routine and protect the skin with SPF when being exposed to the sun because Retinol is sensitive to light and air and can make your skin sensitive to the sun because of the cell turn-over.
      However, while tanning, you may not want to use Retinol (so skip it during summer) or use fake tans instead.

I am not sure about this, and I think there aren't any issues; however, please always check with them. It may be best to ask your dermatologist or your doctor about what you can do in this case. 🙂
      Generally speaking, the routine looks good, it's a great hydration routine that may help with dark spots (if those are your concerns) Keep in mind that Alpha-Arbutin does not help with Melasma. Well, I'm not sure what I should think of ''purging''...See, I use a Benzoyl Peroxide cream that has Retinol in it as well, and my skin has no problems with it, however, if I use a Retinol product from a different brand, I do sometimes experience pimples...but I'm not sure if that's purging or if something with my skin or the product formulation is odd...🤷🏼‍♀️

I didn’t know at that time that i had to use it within 6 months. Now i still have more than half of bottle left. So can u suggest what should i do cuz i dont want to waste my money with my next bottle 😢 is there another product with longer shelf life or smaller packaging that is equally better? Thanks in advance 😊❤

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Please note that The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane is only good for 3 months, even when stored properly in the fridge, due to its formulation and packaging. However, if you buy products that come in an airless pump, such as CeraVe Retinol Serums or Paula's Choice, they may last a bit longer. However, these products are also much more expensive, and in my opinion, not really worth the extra cost. Instead, you could consider using a Retinal or Retinoid, such as G&G Retinal 0.05% or Adapalene 0.1%.

    Also thank you for all your videos and hard work!

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What cleanser do you use? Since most of the time, cleansers have a "high pH" unless you are using one with AHA or BHA, this will create a lower pH, but then you are not using another leave-on exfoliant in the same routine.
      So you cleanse your face to remove any excess oil, dirt, makeup and sunscreen. Then apply your toner to bring back the nourishing ingredients that the skin needs and that it gets back into its balance and then exfoliate your skin with a leave-on exfoliant.
      You just do this when using, for example, the Ordinary Peeling Solution, then this is your second step after cleansing since it is a mask that you rinse of after 10min and then follow with all your leave-on products.

      Under (04:07), you can find the order of application.
      Niacinamide = Water-Based "Serum"
      Azelaic Acid is a bit special, and it's not clear if you should use it with Retinol or not. Therefore I did not include it. It would be applied as the last step.
      Generally speaking, when using Retinol, I wouldn't include it in the same routine. It may be best to use Azelaic Acid in the morning. But some claim that it may be beneficial in combination with Retinol since it may decrease the redness. But very controversial, and in fact, I'm not particularly eager to do it.

    Hi, I love your videos! I'm going to start using retinol 0.2% for the first time three days a week like you said. Is it okay if I use exfoliator (the body shop seaweed) the days that I don't use the retinol? Thank you :)

      Overall it depends on your personal tolerance for these products. So I can't help you much with that. But generally, the 0,2% shouldn't cause much of an issue, so your routine is likely okay. It's primarily an issue with 0,5% and becomes severe with 1% :) And from my experience, it's best to use Retinol on its own. But you still could use Niacinamide in the morning. And it does not conflict with Retinol, so technically, you could use it before Retinol.

    Hey melissa! I started with the ordinary retinol 0.2 in squalane 3 months ago. I experienced purging after 3 weeks but it got fine after a while however I haven’t seen much change in my skin. I used it twice a week at night. Now I have to restock it as it got expired. So can you suggest me a good one. Also my skin tolerance has been increased as my skincare routine includes Ordinary products like lactic acid 10%, the aha and bha peeling solution, niacinamide and I’d already introduced retinol in my regime.
    So this time I want to spend on a good retinol or retinoid, which will actually work on my skin because these products are not available in India and I have to order it from UK, so I have to really think about it. But I am really confused. Should I buy retinoid this time? Please help. I am 24 and I have dry skin, not much acne, but some spots and little bumps. I really want a smooth skin, smooth texture. I will consider your answer a helpful suggestion as every skin is different and you can’t be certain, So don’t worry I any which way do my own research. Just need a advice from a friend. Thankyou!

      Hey! :)
      Well, you still could stick to the Ordinary 0,2% Retinol and use it more often as you 'only' have been using it two times per week. However, Retinol can be used more often, up to daily throughout the week.
      However, if you want to get a different one, you could move up to the Ordinary 0,5% or 2% Granactive Retinoid in Emulsion or Squalane. Or have a look at La Roche Posay's Redermic Retinol Cream, which includes 0,3% of Retinol. Or have a look at Revolution's Retinol products.

      Hey! :)
      You can not really compare Retinol with Granactive Retinoid since those are two are different derivatives from Vitamin A.
      Granactive Retinoid is a new 'version' of Retinoid.
      Both Retinol and Granactive Retinoid can help you with signs of aging, textured skin and pigmentation issues on the surface of the skin. However, Granactive Retinoid (due to how it is formulated) does not really lead to irritation whereas Retinol is known to cause irritation when being new to it and the higher you are going up in strength.
      Have a read through this:

    Hi,
    1. I just finished my first bottle of TO Aha Bha peeling solution but i noticed even using only twice a week for 10 mins it's still making my eyes area very dry and irritated. I normally have oily T-zone with dry skin. Though after rinsing the solution off i do use cosrx toner and snail mucin essence followed by CeraVe moisturer and even alternatively use Niacinamide and Alpha arbutin as well. Is my skin still purging? My skin gets all fine once i stop using the peeling solution. I have already bought my 2nd bottle of the peeling solution but not sure if i should continue or not.
    2. I also bought the Granactive 2% emulsion and hyaluronic acid was wondering if i can apply them both one after the another on the same routine?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello,
      Hmm, you should avoid the eye area when using the product. But apart from that, what toner are you using after? Do you use an exfoliating acid toner? If so, that's probably another issue. And what happens when you do not use anything afterwards? 🤔 Apart from that, if it is still irritating, then I wouldn't use it anymore...
      And yes, Hyaluronic Acid is a hydrating ingredient and can be used before Granactive Retinoid.
