I was born in 59 and I am so grateful to have experienced the greatest eras of music ever. When ever I hear these tunes I wonder how simple life was in those days. People worked hard, respected each other and knew how to have fun. Listening to that music just makes you want to dance or sing the lyrics. That’s what the artists of the day intended it to do
Here is probably the one most important video you will ever make for me. Buddy Holly Ritchie and the Bopper died in the night of Feb 3 1959. I was born in Des Moines Iowa shortly aftet midnight Feb 4 1959. I have always love music and somehow feel our souls passed on his way up and my way into the world. Being from Iowa and the date of my birth Buddy Holly had always been very special to me. Thank you Jordan.
I do live in Clear Lake and I can say that, this area is very highly looked after. I don't believe that there have ever been any problems in recent years.

I recognise the respect everyone has for those who died and know how Waylon suffered in later life because of this. They all suffered. Was music ever the same again? I am deeply moved by seeing the way the musicians since have written their names on the walls. This is a moment in history we should never forget.
I was raised in Hampton Iowa just an hrs drive to the Surf Ballroom. As teens the thing to do was "Sneak" to the Surf!! We had "sock hops" to this era of great music! I love the respect you show for the Elite!

No doubting the brilliant talent of JP, Buddy and Ritchie. I was pleased to see that Roger Peterson was acknowledged. He too has a family who love and miss him to this day. Just 21 years old and newly married. For those who might not know Ritchie's brother Bob sadly passed away a couple of years ago.
I LOVE that this building is frozen in time and filled with such history. I loved buddy holly and Ritchie valens (my mom turned me on to their music)..... phenomenal vlog. A museum of musical history... ♥️. I found myself humming their songs while i watched. Thank you for sharing this tribute.
I was 5 yrs old on Feb.3, 1959. My older brother Mike, turned me on to rock and roll. My favorites were Elvis, Buddy and the Bopper. I just loved them! Mike was 16 and he drove me down to the highway where there was a gas station and grill. We were going to the grill where i was going to have my first taste of Coca cola. As we pulled in, we heard on the radio, "Buddy Holly dies in plane crash near Mason City, Iowa." I'll never forget the look on my brothers face. I said, "what does dies mean?" He sat for a minute, then he said to me, " Well it's like a bird, that flys away and never comes back." I remember i sat there for a bit. It was a grey sky morning with light snow flurries, occasional gusts of wind. Very cold. My hometown was maybe somewhere between 200 and 300 miles west of Clear Lake. We kind of just sat there and i was looking out the car window watching flurries eventually make it to the ground where a wind gust would send them dancing down the rows of corn. Years later i worked at a recording studio in the South, where a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded an album called " Gimme Back my Bullets". The band was amazing and was known for a song called Freebird. I got to know the lead singer songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. He was an amazing and very talented man. I could actually feel that he was a legend in the making, right before my eyes. It was a sad, sad day when their plane went down and crashed near Galesburg, Mississippi on October 20, 1977. When I heard Ronnie was gone, i remembered the snow flurries and what my brother said about the bird flying away. God bless all freebirds, we carry them in our hearts ❤ forever. Miss them more than i can say.
Need to travel here one day and see where these absolute legends played and I have always believed music definitely died that night R.I.P LEGENDS LOVE FROM ENGLAND 🇬🇧

Great vlog, I remember when The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey came out. My sister and I were afraid to cross the 6 lane highway to the movie theater but did it anyway. We must have watched that film at least 7 times. Thanks for keeping their Rock N Roll spirits alive JL!

Wow! I felt the spirit of these men as you took us around the Surf Ballroom . It was like they were still there trying to figure out how to get to the next show. I need to visit this place in person, if just the video had this effect on me. Thank you for creating it.
Beautiful tribute, and moving video! The Surf Ballroom is a treasure chest. On a sad note, the Big Bopper's leopard print jacket that he wore on stage for the whole tour, as well as his Stetson hat, were stolen from the tour bus at some point after the crash. The ballroom shows his necktie and clothing tag displayed on a swatch of similar print, but the actual jacket was stolen. There's footage of his son asking whether it might be in the casket, in the exhumation video, and it wasn't. So sad -- the family would love to have those items back, even all these years later.
Experiencing the Surf Ballroom is amazing. It's like going back in time. The crash site memorial so glad you dug it out of the snow. Jordan I think this Vlog was superb.
I just realized something. Their deaths brought an end to the innocents of the 50's. Such as the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison brought and end to the 60's.
@Jason Stone --- it's just sad because the turbulent 60's coulda went out on a positive note with the Summer of Love in '67 and feel-good vibes of Woodstock in '69 but instead it ended in darkness and death (Altamont, deaths of Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison)

Thanks for the tribute video on these guys. Their contributions to music shouldn't be forgotten. People like theses inspired generations to become musicians. The Steve Vaughn crash sight at alpine valley also brings back some sad memories. He was an amazing musician also.
Jordan, hiking out to the crash site isn't "what we do". You were showing great respect. I have always loved RnR music. I was 12 yrs old when the crash happened, I remember that day still. The first time I heard Don McLean's "American Pie" I instinctively knew it referred to the crash and deaths of Holly, Valens and Richardson. I won't ever be able to visit the memorial, but I was able to see it because of you. Thank you.
I’m glad that it was a milder winter this year in Iowa so that you had a chance to get out to the crash sight. It (the memorial) has changed some since I have been out there several years ago. I live in Fort Dodge, where the winter dance party had came to the Laramar Ballroom. The Ballroom here still exists but is no longer open.

On VH1 Behind the Music, Lou Diamond Phillips said when they were filming that movie, Ritchie's mom and sister were on set. After filming a scene, his sister grabbed Lou and screamed at him "Why did you die on me, Ritchie?" So so sad
@@gettinhitched I had heard that. I think it was when they filmed him climbing in the plane. Having them there for that particular scene feels a bit cruel. I think she also said, "why did you get on the plane?" Reading about that tore at my heart.
Possibly the best tribute to these three Rock n Roll icons that I have seen. Well done on the production, it had an emotional impact on me and probably most of the people who have watched this. Surely the most tragic episode of Rock n Roll ever!

@@QuincyDisneyVegan Don't forget the bus driver who had an expired pilot's license. He took a plane and was fooling around, buzzing Ozzie Osbourne's tour bus, then crashing and killing Randy Rhoads, himself and the band's seamstress. All were on the plane, and it was a nice, clear, sunny day.
@@irisrose4732 Thanks for mentioning that. I don't listen to much metal anymore but Randy Rhoads holds such a special place in my heart. And 39 years later I'm still always checking for anything new out here with Randy. Stupid pilot..we lost the most influential metal/Rock gtr player from 1980-1982.. and he's still influencing so many gtr players. What's really sad is that there's so little clear footage to see of Randy... and the travesty of that is completely due to Sharon Osbourne not caring at all about Randy's legacy and memory. Randy totally saved Ozzy's career and they thank him by not sharing the professionally filmed shows she had taken during the Diary tour. That's a Fact!! Ugh..it really bothers me to this day! There's so much more to the story as well.

This is the biggest, most important peace of rock n roll history on the planet! I’ve seen so many videos of the Surf and I always learn something new. Bucket List item for sure. Did you know they projected the night sky on the ceiling of the ballroom on the night of the winter dance party? And that they still do that every year when they re-enact the concert. On Feb 3 1959 we were at my grandmothers celebrating her 70th birthday, I was 8. The news came on the tv about the accident...my older brother and sister were shocked. I was too young to be into music then but they had the radio on all the time.. I can remember this like it was yesterday.

This is a great tour and video of this historic place . My wife and I had the privilege of being there on the night of Feb. 3, 2009, at the"50 Winters Later" show. Amazing experience. Came back the next day and saw all things things you pointed out (phone booth, stood on the stage, etc). The we went to the crash sight, only a few miles from the Surf. I wanted to mention that Waylon Jennings, years later, wrote a tribute song to Buddy called "Old Friend". It is well worth taking a listen to and shows Waylon's lifelong allegiance to his friend Buddy. Thanks again for the tour.

Fate can be cruel. As a young person death was so shocking and sort of unreal. But as you get older and come to get a gripe on hiw fleeting life can be you appreciate each day, help others, and be as happy as you possibly can.

We owe so much to Buddy and Richie and JP and I hope that their contributions to music are never forgotten. Thank you for the video. I must say the land owner needs to know how much he is appreciated for putting up a memorial for these three young men. It must be surreal to be there. So different than watching a video. Their music was great and will live on. Just makes you think of what could have been with them. We'll never know. Great that the Surf Ballroom has stayed authentic as well. If I was a professional musician, I surely would make this a place to put on a show for the history of it all. Thanks again, well done.

I was there in May, 2019. A very moving experience. I felt chilly there although it was May. I started to do a video and about 5 seconds into the video I started to hear small prop plane flying over head. I panned the sky, but never saw a plane. I do have to note it was overcast. To be there, at that moment and to have that sound out of nowhere...it was a really strange experience. Out at Clear Lake the “May bugs” were sooo bad I couldn’t even get out of my car to check out the Surf Ballroom. Someday I’ll go back. Thanks for all you do Jordan! 😎🎸

Wow! I just happened to come across this video & your channel, this is amazing! I got chills as you walked into the ballroom. I was born in the 90’s but I love 50’s & 60’s music. RIP Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, & The Big Bopper🙏🏻
Jordan, even though I knew the story, it still saddens me. As a pilot, I have flown that make and model of aircraft years ago. The Beechcraft Bonanza, with its “V-tail” design takes some time to master the handling characteristics. The aircraft can roll very easily. Coupled with flying at night and very low visibility, is a very dangerous combination. I have over 500 hours of flying time, I would not have flown that night. It is also known as “The doctor killer“, as many doctors would purchase this aircraft but would not gain the experience to master the airplane. Many of them ended up in fatal accidents because of it. The airplane can also be called a “wild stallion” as it will break you if you don’t break it in. I believe some analyses have concluded that the pilot suffered from what is called in the aviation industry as, “Spatial disorientation”. It is something that occurs when your equilibrium system in your head conflicts with what you interpret on the instrument panel in low or zero visibility . I remember flying at night one time in IFR training, where I had a “hood” on my head to simulate zero visibility outside. The instructor and I were doing some turning maneuvers. After I leveled out, I swore I was still turning, but to the other direction- but yet the instruments were telling me I was in level flight, and they were correct. It is hard to describe, but it is as if everything in your equilibrium is screaming at you that you are turning, when you are not. So you have a choice to follow your body’s intense indications, or follow the flight instruments. 99% of the time the Instruments are correct and your body is communicating error. It is something that affects all pilots at some point, even though they have many flight hours. Great Vlog, now one of my favorites too. Cheers, Jeff.

Mike was 16 and he drove me down to the highway where there was a gas station and grill. We were going to the grill where i was going to have my first taste of Coca cola. As we pulled in, we heard on the radio, "Buddy Holly dies in plane crash near Mason City, Iowa." I'll never forget the look on my brothers face. I said, "what does dies mean?" He sat for a minute, then he said to me, " Well it's like a bird, that flys away and never comes back." I remember i sat there for a bit. It was a grey sky morning with light snow flurries, occasional gusts of wind. Very cold. My hometown was maybe somewhere between 200 and 300 miles west of Clear Lake. We kind of just sat there and i was looking out the car window watching flurries eventually make it to the ground where a wind gust would send them dancing down the rows of corn.
Years later i worked at a recording studio in the South, where a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd recorded an album called " Gimme Back my Bullets". The band was amazing and was known for a song called Freebird. I got to know the lead singer songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. He was an amazing and very talented man. I could actually feel that he was a legend in the making, right before my eyes. It was a sad, sad day when their plane went down and crashed near Galesburg, Mississippi on October 20, 1977.
When I heard Ronnie was gone, i remembered the snow flurries and what my brother said about the bird flying away. God bless all freebirds, we carry them in our hearts ❤ forever. Miss them more than i can say.
Need to travel here one day and see where these absolute legends played and I have always believed music definitely died that night R.I.P LEGENDS LOVE FROM ENGLAND 🇬🇧

I have watched faithfully every vlog since since discovering your channel. Sometimes though, there are vlogs that just really touch my heart in such a way. This was one of those blogs. Great vlog, I remember when The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey came out. My sister and I were afraid to cross the 6 lane highway to the movie theater but did it anyway. We must have watched that film at least 7 times. Thanks for keeping their Rock N Roll spirits alive JL!

Beautiful tribute, and moving video! The Surf Ballroom is a treasure chest. On a sad note, the Big Bopper's leopard print jacket that he wore on stage for the whole tour, as well as his Stetson hat, were stolen from the tour bus at some point after the crash. The ballroom shows his necktie and clothing tag displayed on a swatch of similar print, but the actual jacket was stolen. There's footage of his son asking whether it might be in the casket, in the exhumation video, and it wasn't. So sad -- the family would love to have those items back, even all these years later.
Experiencing the Surf Ballroom is amazing. It's like going back in time. The crash site memorial so glad you dug it out of the snow. Jordan I think this Vlog was superb.
I just realized something. Their deaths brought an end to the innocents of the 50's. Such as the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison brought and end to the 60's.

@Jason Stone --- it's just sad because the turbulent 60's coulda went out on a positive note with the Summer of Love in '67 and feel-good vibes of Woodstock in '69 but instead it ended in darkness and death (Altamont, deaths of Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison)
The tragic end of Sharon Tate and the other victims of the Manson Family added to that.

Thanks for the tribute video on these guys. Their contributions to music shouldn't be forgotten. People like theses inspired generations to become musicians. The Steve Vaughn crash sight at alpine valley also brings back some sad memories. He was an amazing musician also.
Jordan, hiking out to the crash site isn't "what we do". You were showing great respect. I have always loved RnR music. I was 12 yrs old when the crash happened, I remember that day still. The first time I heard Don McLean's "American Pie" I instinctively knew it referred to the crash and deaths of Holly, Valens and Richardson. I won't ever be able to visit the memorial, but I was able to see it because of you. Thank you.

I’m glad that it was a milder winter this year in Iowa so that you had a chance to get out to the crash sight. It (the memorial) has changed some since I have been out there several years ago. I live in Fort Dodge, where the winter dance party had came to the Laramar Ballroom. The Ballroom here still exists but is no longer open.

On VH1 Behind the Music, Lou Diamond Phillips said when they were filming that movie, Ritchie's mom and sister were on set. After filming a scene, his sister grabbed Lou and screamed at him "Why did you die on me, Ritchie?" So so sad
@@gettinhitched I had heard that. I think it was when they filmed him climbing in the plane. Having them there for that particular scene feels a bit cruel. I think she also said, "why did you get on the plane?" Reading about that tore at my heart.

@@QuincyDisneyVegan Don't forget the bus driver who had an expired pilot's license. He took a plane and was fooling around, buzzing Ozzie Osbourne's tour bus, then crashing and killing Randy Rhoads, himself and the band's seamstress. All were on the plane, and it was a nice, clear, sunny day.

And 39 years later I'm still always checking for anything new out here with Randy. Stupid pilot..we lost the most influential metal/Rock gtr player from 1980-1982.. and he's still influencing so many gtr players. What's really sad is that there's so little clear footage to see of Randy... and the travesty of that is completely due to Sharon Osbourne not caring at all about Randy's legacy and memory. Randy totally saved Ozzy's career and they thank him by not sharing the professionally filmed shows she had taken during the Diary tour. That's a Fact!! Ugh..it really bothers me to this day! There's so much more to the story as well.
Stevie Ray Vaughan as well.. killed in a helicopter flying in bad weather. Phew what a huge loss!

This is the biggest, most important peace of rock n roll history on the planet! I’ve seen so many videos of the Surf and I always learn something new. Bucket List item for sure. Did you know they projected the night sky on the ceiling of the ballroom on the night of the winter dance party? And that they still do that every year when they re-enact the concert. That’s why the ceiling is painted midnight blue. It’s supposed to be a surreal experience. Anyway thank you again... awesome vlog! My favorite so far

On Feb 3 1959 we were at my grandmothers celebrating her 70th birthday, I was 8. The news came on the tv about the accident...my older brother and sister were shocked. I was too young to be into music then but they had the radio on all the time.. I can remember this like it was yesterday.

This is a great tour and video of this historic place . My wife and I had the privilege of being there on the night of Feb. 3, 2009, at the"50 Winters Later" show. Amazing experience. Came back the next day and saw all things things you pointed out (phone booth, stood on the stage, etc). The we went to the crash sight, only a few miles from the Surf. I wanted to mention that Waylon Jennings, years later, wrote a tribute song to Buddy called "Old Friend". It is well worth taking a listen to and shows Waylon's lifelong allegiance to his friend Buddy. Thanks again for the tour.

Fate can be cruel. As a young person death was so shocking and sort of unreal. But as you get older and come to get a gripe on hiw fleeting life can be you appreciate each day, help others, and be as happy as you possibly can.

Thank you for the video. I must say the land owner needs to know how much he is appreciated for putting up a memorial for these three young men. It must be surreal to be there. So different than watching a video. Their music was great and will live on. Just makes you think of what could have been with them. We'll never know. Great that the Surf Ballroom has stayed authentic as well. If I was a professional musician, I surely would make this a place to put on a show for the history of it all. Thanks again, well done.

I was there in May, 2019. A very moving experience. I felt chilly there although it was May. I started to do a video and about 5 seconds into the video I started to hear small prop plane flying over head. I panned the sky, but never saw a plane. I do have to note it was overcast. To be there, at that moment and to have that sound out of nowhere...it was a really strange experience. Out at Clear Lake the “May bugs” were sooo bad I couldn’t even get out of my car to check out the Surf Ballroom. Someday I’ll go back. Thanks for all you do Jordan! 😎🎸

Once again a fantastic vlog,you really do ur homework,IV been a Buddy Holly fan from the age of 6 I’m now 58 yrs young,I found my mums record collection and played true love ways,and Peggy sue,not once but over and over only stopped when my mum came in from the back garden and she telling me Buddy died 3 yrs before I was born,and I cried,I have a vast Buddy Holly collection,even some of his clothes and his autograph times 4 ,IV met his brother Larry and Larrys son randy,IV been to his gravesite, I have made it my purpose to introduce Buddy Holly to anyone I meet,just because if it wasn’t for Buddy,we wouldn’t have the music with which we have been bought up with,we hear buddy in the Beatles,the stones,Elton John,rod Stewart and Bowie to name a few,long live Buddy Holly,long live the king lee Mcmahon uk

I can't help wondering all the music they would of created for the world to enjoy, had they not died and all the life they could of lived. Jordan, even though I knew the story, it still saddens me. As a pilot, I have flown that make and model of aircraft years ago. The Beechcraft Bonanza, with its “V-tail” design takes some time to master the handling characteristics. The aircraft can roll very easily. Coupled with flying at night and very low visibility, is a very dangerous combination. I have over 500 hours of flying time, I would not have flown that night. It is also known as “The doctor killer“, as many doctors would purchase this aircraft but would not gain the experience to master the airplane. Many of them ended up in fatal accidents because of it. The airplane can also be called a “wild stallion” as it will break you if you don’t break it in.
I believe some analyses have concluded that the pilot suffered from what is called in the aviation industry as, “Spatial disorientation”. It is something that occurs when your equilibrium system in your head conflicts with what you interpret on the instrument panel in low or zero visibility . I remember flying at night one time in IFR training, where I had a “hood” on my head to simulate zero visibility outside. The instructor and I were doing some turning maneuvers. After I leveled out, I swore I was still turning, but to the other direction- but yet the instruments were telling me I was in level flight, and they were correct. It is hard to describe, but it is as if everything in your equilibrium is screaming at you that you are turning, when you are not. So you have a choice to follow your body’s intense indications, or follow the flight instruments. 99% of the time the Instruments are correct and your body is communicating error. It is something that affects all pilots at some point, even though they have many flight hours. Great Vlog, now one of my favorites too. Cheers, Jeff.
